I used these when I flew helicopters in the Army. You can create a map book that (for example) covers a good chunk of South Korea in 1:50,000 scale that is no larger than a 3 ring binder and maybe 2" thick. That was many years ago and I forgot how I used to make them, so thanks for the very clear and accurate refresher! I use Caltopo to generate the maps I use when I go on fairly long canoeing treks. And as one person commented -- if you use a map a lot it will begin to fray and wear a bit at the folds but it's nothing that a bit of clear tape cannot take care of. When I was a flight instructor I used a book map (1:50,000 scale) of our training area that probably covered 50 square miles (at least) for a couple of years.
I recommend placing some scotch tape on the back side of the map, at each end of the cut, to reinforce the map and prevent tearing. Simple and very useful technique.
Saw this a lot in Afghanistan. I had one made out of good high resolution aerial imagery with compound and sector maps that was laminated. So simple but useful. Always wondered how it was folded. Thanks for the instructional.

Great interesting methods of map folding If you get a chance see how the British ordinance survey maps are folded , they seem much easier to partially open and move through all the segments as in a book
The only issue I see with refolding the opposite direction after the initial fold is that the map is weakened at that crease and will begin to tear along it. You only need one fold for it to work.
I used to print maps on 8.5" x11" sheets then put the printed paper in a gallon plastic bag that I iron to make it water proof. I put paper outside of the plastic baggie before ironing on low which is then peeled afterwards.

@@johngo6283 You can't rely on caltopo in using a cell phone. Printed maps are far more superior because it implies you have the necessary skill to use it.
If you’re in the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) region you used to be able to order from them in Chattanooga as well. I’m in Kentucky but bought my topo maps from them and they were sent in a circular mailer without folds for a little extra.

This is the most chaotic and annoying video I have ever watched! Flipping back and forth paper and promising to “address” this or that “in a minute”! Wasted 13 mins for something that could be shown in 3!
if you could try to do it in six minutes and then try in three and than, maybe in one. when you succeed, you will get more people to watch your channel.

You can buy a spray for waterproofing maps. I do not remember the name any longer. Back in the old days we used hair spray.
You can also use Tyvek sheets. They come in different sizes as well
