The real problem is Money and the slippery slope of security vs inconvenience to the parents... True prevention involves metal detectors, prison like walls / buildings, cameras in classrooms, removal of privacy for all students / faculty / staff. Also, parent's will be furious if their kids take over an hour to get INTO the building for school as it would take multiple metal detector stations and security for each one to get all of the kids in. Bag searches for any metal detection and of course this means many police officers in the school daily, the cost of the detectors, cameras, additional faculty and staff. That is money that no district is willing to spend. This is why, as you said, nothing is going to change.

Even in a study performed in 2016, the US had 10.6 gun deaths per 100k - that number is only 2.1/100k in Canada, where gun laws are taken much more seriously. The US is one of 4 countries in the world where guns are the number one cause of death in children. Shouldn't that be an insane thing to say - that your child is more likely to be shot dead than to die in a car accident or to an overdose?

It’s common when giving an interview so the media knows who they talked to and how to spell it when reporting it. Officials probably give interviews enough that they know the routine and do it automatically.
It took them seven minutes to get there? That is unacceptable. A lot of people can die in that time.
I think it’s time for all public schools and even private to set up an airport-like security system. Our students are sitting ducks until this happens.

The USA is supposed to be the greatest country in the world, and a world leader when it comes to freedom and civil rights. How can people sleep at night knowing that their kids have to go to school every day with the risk of being murdered in their classrooms?!
GUNS are the reason that this keeps happening!! Yes, mental health has a lot to do with these type of incidents, but honestly, when was the last time you heard of a mass murder by a steak knife or a crossbow?! It shouldn’t matter who you vote for! Probably at best, town this size 2 officers on duty, probably only 1. Dispatch would have been in another town, at the county seat. No knowing what he was doing when call came in or what his location was. Max speed may have been also complicated by pre sunrise at a time kids were walking to school.

Why can’t they answer questions when they already know the answers? They know the gunman is killed, the police found his body when they arrived. They also know there was a dead 6th grader whom they also found on arrival. Just tell the people what is going on in their community.

Current IOWA Weapon Permits:
Weapon permit law changes that took effect July 1, 2021 remove the requirement for a permit to acquire or a permit to carry in order to purchase a handgun or carry a firearm in public places subject to certain limitations.
Also zero weapons are allowed on school grounds. We have a handful of kids who get expelled every year for having paintball guns in cars that are parked and locked on school property.
