Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a 2019 monster film directed by Michael Dougherty and co-written by Dougherty with Zach Shields. A sequel to Godzilla (2014), it is the 35th film in the Godzilla franchise, the third film in Legendary's MonsterVerse, and the third Godzilla film to be completely produced by a Hollywood studio.
It is dedicated to executive producer Yoshimitsu Banno and original Godzilla suit performer Haruo Nakajima, who both died in 2017.
The film stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance, Thomas Middleditch, Aisha Hinds, O'Shea Jackson Jr., David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe, and Zhang Ziyi.
In the film, humans must rely on Godzilla and Mothra to defeat King Ghidorah, who has awakened other Titans to destroy the world. The sequel was green-lit during the opening weekend of Godzilla, with Gareth Edwards expected to return to direct a trilogy.

I'm not a Godzilla fan, but I enjoy Godzilla 1998, Godzilla the Series and KOTM. I can see the flaws of this film, but I still enjoy it and its far better than that boring Godzilla 2014.

I'm an old school Godzilla fan so this movie didn't bother me as much. At least we actually get to see Godzilla in a Godzilla movie. King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan all get to shine. Plus we get to see some new monsters. So IMO it was a decent flick. One of the few decent flicks of 2019.

Great review Matt, I thought Godzilla: King of The Monsters it was Ok, the story isn't anything special, the characters weren't that interesting, thats why don't love the movie, but I Enjoyed the Action & Vera Farmiga & Kyle Chandler did a Good Job Acting, I can Enjoy Godzilla: King of Monsters as a Time Waster, I Still prefer Godzilla 1998 IMO

Saw it in theaters and once at home, it’s ok. Definitely better than the 2014 movie, but not a very good Godzilla flick.

I should point out that the *Ultimate Difference* between the original Godzilla (1954) & the two films of Godzilla (2014) & Godzilla: King of the Monsters! The Original 1954 Godzilla wasn't only a Gigantic Monster with a Character but he was a Destroyer, a Force of Nature, Invincible & Indestructible Monster. The Nuclear Atomic Bomb Incarnate if you may call him, he destroyed the Entire city of Tokyo in rumble & ashes, left death & destruction and most importantly left Radiation in his wake as he roamed where he pleased! Even when the scene of the Aftermath you see Men, Women & Children who lost everything testing positive for Radiation Exposure!
Unlike the Original 1954 Version, the 2014 Version & King of the Monsters implies that, "Nuclear Weapons & Radiation is Good & Are the Answers to Life's Problems to Save the World!", which is the very Demon that was condemned by the Director of the 1954 Movie! This Pro-Nuclear Stance where the claim in the Movie that The Titans will Heal the Planet with their Radiation, which I strongly hate in those movies because in the 1954 version literally tells it like it is, Radiation doesn't heal it kills! I honestly believe that the director, Ishirō Honda, the Rest of Toho & the Survivors of Hiroshima & Nagasaki would strongly disagree with harsh criticism!
But again with the Poorly structured Script of this Movie & the complete lacking of whatever the hell was in Godzilla (2014), they're messages are completely a mess from what the Original Godzilla was.

I figured if you were to have reviewed this again that your opinion would have changed over time on it.
That said I can see why you didn't like the film. I say if anything this film was more for the fans than the general audience as a whole. Good to watch for the monster action but otherwise not really getting anything out from the characters aside from Serizawa and the story.
Hope Godzilla vs. Kong proves to be better for you if you ever review it.

I was watched Mothra vs Godzilla 1964 a couple of days after I saw this. The difference between the two was night and day. This movie was boring, no tension, and corny in a bad way. In Mothra vs Godzilla I was invested in what was going on and the build up to the main fight was great. Godzilla King of the Monsters is one of the worst Godzilla movies I ever watched. I saw it in the theaters and almost fell asleep watching it a couple of times.

5:50 yeah so it can raise the stakes remember the oxygen destroyer in this movie is a prototype. Even if it's the real deal it wouldn't work on ghidorah regardless. I love this movie the monsters are clearly the stars of the movie unlike 2014. Yes the constant rain can get annoying but blame ghidorah for causing it in the first place I didn't mind it though. The humans aren't that bad. Ken Watanabie is still great. Mark is a decent lead Millie Bobbie Brown is doing fine. Yes these characters aren't the greatest but I can handle these characters over Ford. 5:55 how is that a problem? You complain him showing up an hour in the last movie. How is him appearing 30 to 40 minuets in a problem? Also the fight wasn't that bad. 6:08 soooo the fight in Mexico doesn't count? Also again raising the stakes. 7:05 it wasn't hard to see plus it made sense since Ghidorah was creating the storms. 7:30 not at first godzilla was winning throughout the battle. Until ghidorah got a super charge himself. 7:43 he can't cause Ghidorah is the biggest threat and godzilla knows this. That's why he went after him. Take out the bigger threat the rest will fall in line that proves he's the strongest. 11:33 we have that movie already godzilla vs mechagodzilla 1993 and that movie is awesome. Also Mike Dougherty want to do a godzilla B.C. type movie and I love to see that. 13:40 that's a plot point yes it's possible that humans and the monsters can live in peace it happened before. Read the cover text during the credit's.

Better than the previous film but still found it a underwhelming movie, much prefered Kong Skull Island.

Totally understandable on your view, but I enjoyed it better than the previous one. It does have issues like the mom's plan and characters. That's understandable. But still like it on a visual level. I enjoy the score, especially the reversion of Blue Oyster Cult's Godzilla and Ken Watanabe's character sacrifice, which was my favorite part. I'm curious about Godzilla vs. Kong, although I'm still very skeptical, because the director is Adam Wingard, the one who directed that very shitty sequel, Blair Witch.

I still like the film. But it does cheap on some potential.
But I still consider this film better then every other Godzilla film in the last 16 years.
The thing that would've made this perfect is if the film had between Ghidorah defeating Godzilla & the final battle, have Godzilla work with Mothra & Rodan to fight all sorts of monsters under Ghidorah's command.

Im glad someone is willing to acknowledge how bad this movie was. You wouldnt believe the hate Ive gotten for saying so. Ive had Godzilla fans say that this movie should be viewed without standards, that hating this movie is "racist against Godzilla fans" and even that Trump is somehow responsible for the lack of monster action. I wish I was kidding.

Awesome job on the rant I seen the clip you talked about with Rodan vs the fighter jets after seeing it I now have zero interest in watching the whole film it seems between this and the 2014 film they really don't know how to make a good fun giant monster film anymore unless it's ''Kong-Skull Island'' which is a ton of fun I love the idea it takes place in the 1970's at the very end of the vietnam war I didn't mind the cast and characters they played Sam Jackson,John Goodman,John C. Reilly,Tom Hiddleston&Brie Larson worked well off each other the film moved at a very fast paced great action scenes like Kong fucking up those army helicopters &other creatures you see like the skull crawlers and that giant spider this film needs to suck that 2017 film's dick IMHO!

This film was crap just like Godzilla 2014. The 1998 version might have looked like a T-Rex but at least the film was enjoyable and had some interesting characters. I don't know why they don't try and make a Godzilla film with POV shots from the Monsters point of view in some scenes. They focus too much on the humans and the action is always boring and shot from a distance.

The original king kong is wonderful. king kong 2005 I dont like. I grew up with the original king kong vs godzilla 1962 so that is my faorite. I prefer the old style effects because i am OLD. I never saw the new king kong skull island stuff because I already know I wont like it. If you like them thats fine. I like the old godzilla movies. In real life godzilla would kick kongs ass it's really no competition, they have to make kong bigger and have super powers just to make these movies work because Godzilla is a GIANT monster with super powers while Kong is really just a big gorilla who shouuld really only be knee high to Godzilla.

I still enjoy this movie, although it does have its problems. I thought King Ghidorah was beyond badass and I really liked the additions of Mothra and Rodan. The human characters didn't offer much either, but I definitely liked them more than the majority of the characters in Godzilla 2014 with the exception of Bryan Cranston. Maybe Godzilla did get his ass kicked a bit too much, but I still think he had his moments to shine as well and I am really looking forward to Godzilla vs. Kong.
