Celebrity names -- of course there are some stars who choose their stage names -- you know, Lady Gaga… Drake….Snoop Dogg … but then there are those unlucky few that are blessed with names nearly impossible to pronounce.
Okay fine, so I’m being a little dramatic but seriously, I’m pretty sure the only thing more annoying than people constantly mispronouncing your name … would be to have people constantly asking you how to pronounce your name. So today we’re going to do a public service to all of these celebs and teach you guys the proper pronunciation of these talented individuals.
1. Quvenzhane Wallis
2. Amanda Seyfried
3. Mia Wasikowska
4. Rihanna
a. REE-ANNE-UH
5. Saoirse Ronan
6. Charlize Theron
7. Jake Gyllenhaal

me too lol :)
+NunyJr What is the difference with Rihanna's name? she pronounced it the same "Ri-Anna".
+Richie Bustamante It's Ree-Anne-uh they say ree-Ann-er.
In Poland you actually pronounce Wasikowska a little bit differently
I swear all british people say rihanna correctly. Ive always noticed americans say ree aahn a
Also, is it aahriana grande or arryanna?!
Brionyx She's called herself "Ree-aahn-a" before, she uses the mispronounciation and its correct form interchangeably. She doesn't mind, or even care, if people call her one or the other.
Brionyx It's "Arryanna"
Caribbean people pronounce it correctly also
Brionyx omgggg ikrrr - btw I am British
im surprised Beneficial Cucumberpatch no wait its Boogietoosh Cabbietax is not in this list?
Haha! I just died at this comment.

I can't understand the difference between the correct and uncorrect pronouncing of Rihanna...
They say rih-onn-uh she says rih-ann-uh
+Thabaat Ballali oh well thank you, maybe it's because I'm italian and in my ears they seem the same :)
Quale la differenza?
tbh nemmeno io riesco a sentirla
+Fra Don't mess with beans quella giusta è Rihanna mentre quella sbagliata è Rihona (ma sono fissazioni mentali che solo gli americani si fanno infatti sono quasi uguali)
I swear if you just say most of these the way we Brits say them, you'll be fine. Dammit America, no one in the UK says Riharna
exactly what i thought! :)
Pretty sure we're not gonna pronounce them the British way considering we're not British and most of them aren't either 😂
Why would we pronounce it the British way if we aren't British? 😂😂😂
No one in Denmark says "Riharnar"
+Noelle Rose But it's the correct way
Saoirse got mispronounced in this one too omgg she's so done. It's SUR-SHA no seersha
But with a name like this you have to expect people mispronouncing it as it looks completely different than what you’d read..
@@GossipGirl770 It is not hard to learn how to say someone's name correctly.
@@gaila.9852 when yiu say something for a long time a specific way and find out it’s something else it is pretty hard
Im also saying this as someone who has to get asked if their name was said the right way every time someone reads it out loud
@@Haha-sz8mk It truly is not. That is an excuse.
A girl in my class pronounces Rhianna "Rhy-anna". And she calls herself her number one fan...🙄
well u can’t even spell rihanna so...
@@mia-ci2ur thank you for brining me back to a comment I made 4 years ago, this feels like a mini time capsule

Nobody pronounces Rihanna's name correctly. I've never heard anyone say her name correctly in my life😂

The Uk say Riannah, but in america its rhianna..
most of people call Louis Tomlinson as Lewis ... His friends call him Lewis , his family call him louie , his boy friend call him lou ....

4:10 - Conan O’Brien cracks me the hell up! I love how he properly properly pronounced Jake, Maggie, and their dad Stephen’s family name: Gyllenhaal, YEE-LUN-HAUL. He’s just leaning in and putting heavily emphasized respect on that. I love it!!
Charlize Theron is from South-Africa so it's actually pronounced "tron"
Thank you🙌 music to MY ears
really? interesting
I remember when Ariana was new everyone pronounced it Airiana Grand
SAME
I remember when she was a Nickelodeon star...
I still pronounce it like that 😂😅
I was a huge fan of hers since the early Victorious days so I've always said it right✌🏼️
+Cat Grande
I didn't say it wasn't... I said "I remember when she was a Nickelodeon star."
Aaah! I'm from Poland, so I know. You still pronounce Mia's name incorectly!
Ikr, I know it's hard to pronounce, but you can learn it!! It really pisses me off
Can confirm. It's wrong
Yep its still wrong. Its Wasikowska not Wasykowska
She still mispronounced Gyllenhaal after hearing Conan say it too.
But to be fair correct polish pronounciation is so hard!! I try it sometimes with my friend but she just laughs ... And she says no matter how hard i try it always sounds russian
Saoirse sounds like a damn seasoning or salad dressing. "Add a pinch of 'Saoirse' or a drizzle of 'Saoirse'." 😂😂
> Teaches people how to pronounce Wasikowska
> pronounces it wrong xD
It's Vah-she-kov-skah. The second syllable should be very soft, certainly not a "see".
She also pronounces Gyllenhaal wrong.
true, but the rest was pretty much spot-on
@@escaperel it was a joke
@@sidolanters1394 Joke from you or from them? =) it was all wrong anyway if you want to it the Swedish way

Charlize Theron is originally from South-Africa. She changed how you pronounce her surname when she became famous. Theron is an Afrikaans (one of South Africa's many languages) surname, and it is pronounces TE-RON. Afrikaans is my First language . so i am 100% sure that you pronounces her surname TE-RON. She just changed it when she became famous
Yep, Im a Afrikaans South African and Theron is a VERY common afrikaans surname, what a sjame the video that tells you how to pronounce names got it wrong. haha
I totally agree! Proudly South African as well!
Omg!! FINNALY! She ruined the surename.

The Rhianna one is stupid, that's just the difference of how the "a" is pronounced in British and American English. Just like any other word involving the letter "a", like "and", "class", "can" and many more. And for those who's name isn't pronounced as it's spelt, it's not other people's fault for mispronouncing it, it's your fault for not adjusting the pronunciation to the language of your country (e.g. if you were born and grew up in USA don't pronounce your name the French way?) or your fault for not going back to live in the country where the origin of that pronunciation is from (i.e. if you want it pronounced the proper French way go live in France).
Your comment is an homage to stupidity.
Demi Ladipo-Eki So people are expected to know the pronunciation of a name in all languages/accents? Learn something new everyday.
+Mirokism There is nothing wrong in learning new information everyday.
+Bell Gustafsson I didn't say the words are pronounced differently, I said British and Americans pronounce the letter A in words differently, therefore making words such as "and" and "can" sound slightly different due to the accent, which is exactly the case with Rhianna's name. See how British and Americans pronounce the word "aunt" and you'll see what I mean.
+Mirokism You're right it is our own faults because we all get to choose our own name.
The only names on this list that I didn't know how to pronounce were Quvenzhane, Wasikowska, and Gyllenhaal. In Britain we all naturally pronounce the other names the way they said is right. And I'm Northern Irish so Saoirse is a given.
P.s. Saoirse (with an i) is seer-sha and Saorse (without an i) is sore-sha.
amanda seyfried..i pronnounce it as..
Amanda Side-Fries..

lol wtf😂 i had a friend named sydney ,i love that name✌
It's the opposite for my sister. Her name is Cindy but gets called Sydney.
Same but mainly it's the new kids who have never met me.
I totally get you. I get Cindy all of the time and
sometimes they spell it Sidnie
+Sydney M My sister gets it spelled, if it's not Sydney, the Cyndi sometimes.
It's funny for us Irish people to see people think that Saoirse is a strange name... 😂
That's what I was thinking😁 its funny because I know so many people called saoirse that it seems strange to me that anyone would mispronounce it!😂
saoirse wow wtf is that
Haha Yeah
haha yeah I was thinking the same :)
Its like people and the name Niamh (Nev). They always say Niam
Rihanna is an Arabic name. So you actually pronounce it totally differently if you want to pronounce it the right way.

Lovise M I don't know, maybe. But I don't know how to pronnouce that ö xD
PalmurcioWorld Okay :) I know because I'm from Norway and we have a letter here that is basically the same; the Ø. And I know a little German (pronunciation)
Lovise M Oh! I know German too! The ö is pronnonced the same way in french?
Apparently Taylor Lautner's name is said Lowt-ner not Lawt-ner. So few people know this that even this list missed it.
Not Under Age I Swear wait really? i had no idea lol
The “how to pronounce” joke in Young Frankenstein - German names you should pronounce the second vowel. Think of a stein of beer.
But with composer/conductors Elmer Bernstein (Hollywood) and Leonard Bernstein (New York), Elmer pronounced his name "BERN-steen", and Leonard used "BERN-styne". They were not related.
I'm certain Charlize has just learned to be satisfied with that pronunciation. It's an Afrikaans surname that is actually pronounced similar to the name of the movie Tron.
What does it actually mean in Afrikaans? It's literally the Greek word for "hunter"
Sometimes one's surname is pronounced differently. Take mine for instance. Unlike most, my surname is pronounced with a long A, so it's AY-run, not ERR- un.
lol lots of people are like "omg i cant pronounce your name, do you have a nickname?" um... if you can pronounce supercalifragilisticexpialadocious, you can pronounce names/terms other than traditional Eurocentric American names.
I just saw this as I was looking for mispronounced names and will use your example- my name is Maroulio and I do not have or want a nickname.
I've always pronounced rihanna's name that way (I'm british)
same and I'm dutch

+ViviliciousLady So Chiaseed the Beef. Got it.
+JOSE LUIS MARTÍNEZ RODRÍGUEZ Lol I'm Canadian and it's not Beouf
Amanda Seyfried pronounces wrong her own name. She has German ancestors. Seyfried (Seifried) is a common German name. It's a variant form of the forename Siegfried and the "ie" in "fried" is a long German iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii (in English a long eeeee)
Long eeeeeeeee but yeah
isabeau lewis
Haha, that's the difference between German and English. Germans pronounce an i like an English e. And the technical term for "ie" is "long i". Therefore iiiiiiiiiiiiii. :)
***** oops, that's what i meant, sorry. I just wanted to clarify it for the english people (i'm canadian but i speak german) but yeah, i get what you're saying because german i is pronounced like english e :)
isabeau lewis
Ohhh yes right..now I understand! I forgot that English people don't understand what I mean with a long iiii. :)
***** that's okay :)
What about Shia Labeouf? Did I even spell it right? Is it pronounced "Shy-uh Luh-boff"? Is it French? What about Cara Delivingne? so many questions need answered!
Shia's dad is cajun and Labeouf is a mispelled version of the French name "Le Bœuf". You can have the pronunciation of the names on wikipedia ;-)
*Cara Delevingne*. Her last name is pronounces as de-le-veeen
Very informative. Thank you 💞😊
Since when the fuck is Rhianna's name Rheanna?! I've said Rhianna my whole life.
Apparently since forever lmfao
I've always said it like Rhe- Awna.
+Chestney Chiller I've heard her pronounce her own name both ways. She probably just goes with the flow, but in her mind thinking, it's REE ANNA.
It's always been Rihanna. REE ANNE UH.
Rihanna* (Ree-anne-ah)
I've been pronouncing Charlize's name correctly, yesss! What about Cara Dev...? Idk how to pronounce it so I just say "Devilini". 😆
I know I'm totally off, btw.
It's Deleveen
De-le-veen 😊

+Sara Acer not vain! Veen, Cara deh-luh-veen
Ahahaa that pronounciation of Gyllenhaal though!😂 "GIIIELENHAAAL" 😂 Sound Danish to me, not swedish😂
I literally watched The Lovely Bones from 3 to 5 am today xD it was really good.
How did Jake end up with that last name? I'm from Sweden but I have never met anyone actually called Gyllenhaal. And it has a very old swedish spelling to it, nothing that would be used in modern swedish. So I looked it up and it turns out that yes, it is an old Swedish last name from a noble Swedish family.... So how did he get it? Anybody that knows?
+Katia not very likely.
Katia Really? Well, I said not very likely but not impossible. So maybe you're right. I'll try to look it up!
+James Sarvan i allways thought his name is pronounced GyllenHEART lol
Samee
Because he descends from Swedish nobility
americans mispronounce even the simple ones like selena gomez and jennifer lopez. its Go-mez not Gow-mez and lo-pez not lowpez
Princess R You do realize that lowpez and lo-pez are the same, right? Same for Go-mez and Gowmez
Princess R literally never in my life have i heard ANYONE say gow-mez or low-pez
Princess R uhhh yeah far and few people pronounce it that way idk what you're talking about
Princess R You probably wanted to say the proper pronunciation is Gaw-mez and Law-pez.
blinski1 Actually I think it is Go-mez because it's how spanish and latin countries pronouce it. But I am not 100% sure.
Totally understand this I just use Stephanie my name is Estefania
You forgot celebs from The Netherlands of France. And obviously Arnold Schgagenheagggurh😂😅
When I told my mom about how we've been pronouncing Jake Gyllenhaal's name all wrong and that it's Sweedish and it's really Jake Yeelenhall she asked, "Then wouldn't his name be Yake Yeelenhall?" Now I'm not sure if it would be Yake Yeelenhall.

+Sol Reategui REE-AH-NA or REE-AN-NA
+johnNYgoesLA REE-ANNA
+Sol Reategui Just like my name is pronounced Jew-Lee-An-Uh. It' be Jew-Lee-On-Uh if my name only had one N in it but I have two. Most of the time it depends on where you're from though. I rarely run into people who say my name correctly.
+Julianna Harrell OMG WE HAVE THE SAME NAME... SPELT THE SAME AND EVERYTHING!!! I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYONE ELSE WITH THIS NAME BEFORE.
My one is pronounced anna and not arna though.
This blew my mind😂😂😭
The originally German surnames can be pronounced the German way (the way Amanda Seyfried's sister does is kinda German) or the American English way. Both are correct which makes it easier. But I as a German am always struggling how to pronounce German names when I speak English or Spanish.
When I pronounce it correctly people mostly don't understand, but I don't really like saying these words with false pronunciation..
I'm from Poland and you still got Mia's name wrong xD
oke
so how it is pronounced?
It's really hard to pronounce this if you're not from Poland. I really don't know how to explain you this. The best way is to go on google translate, enter "Wasikowski", find polish and listen it :)

In reality, even Charlize said her last name wrong. It's Tron not Theron.
Juli Yeah I watched that clip too and she said it right. I wish people (all of them) would pronounce the names and surnames correctly, not "americanize" it...
It's not thron either. It's Teron. The H is silent. A boksburg chick who forgot her own roots.
Yeah. Basically it's "Tron".
Ahhh, no. It's not Tron. She Isent a robot. It's Te-Ron. The H is silent, you still pronounce the e.
From what I heard on the interview with Peers Morgan she said Tron. But anyway, afrikaans is not how people pronounce her name. One way or another. Let' not get into arguing because of someone's surname.
It would be inappropriate if I just pronounced jake gylenhall .... name correctly as he is celebrity and half of Swedish last names incorrectly ....so it's it's our moral duty to keep pronouncing celebrity names just the way they are written .
There are loads of Saoirse's where I live so I thought growing up that it's as common as my own name
Oh. Rihanna pronounces her name like mine. I'm Rhianna.
+Anna McCloud People mispronounce my name all the time too
