Jay North was the most realistic Dennis ever! His acting was so natural.
Mason Gamble was a excellant good Dennis in the Movie version, as was Walter Matthau as Mr. Wilson. Made me fall in love with Dennis the Mennis all over again.
I still watch the show. Jay North was such a talented kid and it breaks my heart to learn what he went through.
It broke my heart when I heard Jay North say that when Dennis The Menace was over he wondered how come the public didn't love him anymore. Maybe Hollywood thought like that, but Oh, how I wish he could've seen how much we ordinary people loved him then and forever. It was Hollywood's loss that they let these lovely, talented people slip through their fingers.
I agree!!!!!!! And I love them ALL now!! Won't it be nice to have an opportunity to meet them? Now that I am an adult, rather than wish that I had a father like Herb Anderson, I wouldn't mind meeting a man like Herb!
I agree with you all they had to do is meet the real jay north than he would have gotten more jobs
Dennis The Menace will never old! GREAT SHOW, GREAT ACTORS!
I was named after the Dennis The Menace character, and was so "jealous" that I didn't have the blonde head of hair that Jay North did. I loved the show but at the same time, it's heartbreaking that he suffered at the hands of his aunt and uncle. I am glad to see that he has found peace and a good life in Florida. Jay North, if you happen to read this, just know that I and millions of others love you for your work on the program.
DennyYou: According to the behind the scenes documentary about that TV series, Jay North didn't really have blonde hair, his hair was dyed blonde for the series. And it's true because in some close up scenes of him you could see the dark roots coming through
Yes so many people love you especially as Dennis ❤️ we still watch you
@@unhooked25 Dyed or not, I still wanted that blonde hair. I had a head of red hair. LOL!
@@SweetDennyD : So did Jay North.
I was not named after Dennis the Menace, as I was born before the show hit the air. However, I had my own set of problems. And I was called Dennis the Menace teasingly often as a child and all through adulthood. For some of us it was not Lucy we loved, but Dennis the Menace. Greetings, Mr. North!
God bless you Gloria, Jeannie & Jay. I loved you when I watched as a child, and I love watching you now on Antenna TV. I am so happy to hear that you 3 are enjoying your lives....
I've enjoyed the Antenna TV reruns of the classic. Jay is just 4 yrs older than me and I had the great opportunity to see him host a Hollywood Bowl orchestral matinee performance of Peter and the Wolf. I loved it. Jay you have always been a good person for me... Glad to hear that you "made peace" and have made a great life. You're Dennis is a joy to watch again tell those stories/situations - THANK You for being the actor you were - to work beyond the situation you had - that is maturity.
I'm 54 years old. I remember watching Dennis the Menace back in the 60's. It cracked me up then, & it still does, now. I watch the show now, on Yahoo View, for free. Old shows like that, I still watch, even now. I treasure shows like that. Shows today, are kind of wack. The past is where all the good shows & cartoons are. And I find them all here, online. Thank Goodness, for the internet.
We're about the same age. Dennis the Menace has held up.
@@flyingmerkel6 You were not old enough to have watched it back then unless reruns like me and I'm your age.
1959-1963. Anyway I still watch it on MeTV or Cozy TV etc..
@@billg5710 Yep, the magic of reruns. Still a fun show 60 years later
I grew up watching this show too.
I know that, for many many years after the show was finished, I was always looking for Jay North on any show......... I absolutely loved him, and am glad to see he is doing fine now.
I agree completely
Not sure but I think he did a season as Tarzan!
I once met Gloria Henry at a Western film convention. She worked with Gene Autry and Charles "Durango Kid" Starrett at Columbia. I had a photo of her in western costume. When she saw it, she asked to borrow it to take home and make copies as she didn't have it. As it worked out, she did have a copy and I got mine back autographed. Neat classy lady.
@@markcadieux3445 , sorry you are mistaken about Harry Anderson, as his father was a Rhode Island traveling salesman.
@@agibson1871 Thnx. I found that out. I was given wrong info.
grew up watching Dennis the Menace - Loved this show.... loved all the characters... yes, was one of those girls that just loved you Jay!
My oldest brother seen him in Florida my favorite TV show I watch it every chance I get love Dennis the menace I would run home from school just to watch it
Still watch it today. It was such a simpler time I smile when I watch it.
Jay North as gotten a lot of respect from all his old friends and all the new friends he made now including his new wife enjoy the rest of your life and may the past be forgotten
Jay North, Gloria Henry, Jeannie Russell, and the cast of Dennis the menace made life a lot easier growing up. I wasn't even born when the show aired, only watching the reruns. Thank you for making a sad kid happy!
Very sweet end to that interview. So glad its better for Jay now.
I have the first two seasons of Dennis the Menace on DVD, I finished the first one and I have 15 more to go on the second season. I have plenty of favorites that have made me laugh out loud.
It's 2019 and I'm still watching. It's a marathon!!!
I know what you mean. He was on The Tom Snyder show in late 70s (1st time I saw him grown up) and he had a chip on his shoulder. It wasnt the show's fault per se as he seemed to convey at that time but the aunt and uncle. Like you said, good to see him smile.
RIP, Miss Gloria Henry.
Rest In Peace Ms. Henry!
I was the reruns on t.v. and have gotten so much enjoyment and big laughs from the show. Thank you Jay, Gloria and Jeannie!
Those was the good old days of tv.
Excellent tv series
I so glad Jay is happy now.
Good ole Mr Wilson
Very glad Mr North is OK with things... because he's the best kid ever and I love him so! The series has a very special place in my heart and as I watch it today, can see what a special guy he was and a light... he just shined.
He had to go thru what he did to get where he is the happiest he's ever been.. Sad he felt he couldnt do anything ..
What a great show ! Thank you, all the cast and crew for the jewel you created !
God bless you three. Great tv and still brings laughter to me. Thank you!🙏
Great show, I remember it fondly. The reunion interview was very interesting.
Great show great actors I watched it in reruns cause I was in 1957
I'm so glad they've all found new directions in their lives, particularly Jay North.
wowww who knew?! seems very sad but at least he made peace and moved forward. good for you Jay! i think it also demonstrates what a good actor he was at that age. to go thru tgat madness everyday and still be this awesome happy kid. i wouldve thought his life as a kid was a dream.
i just started watching DTM on netflix last week and im totally hooked, i really like all the characters and love to hear the old 50's lingo that is way before my time and to see the men smoking pipe which is mostly an american past time at this point, i like how the kids and even middle aged folks like the mitchells refer to the elders as mr. & mrs. and also that everyone knows everyone, looking forward to watching the rest of the episodes
Thank you for this. Dennis was who I wanted to be as a child- blond, good-looking, unafraid of anything...but we all have our own difficulties growing up. I'm glad Jay North is happy now, as am I- with children of my own. This was cathartic.
I still watch it on ROKU. It is a good, clean and funny show. They were all great actors and actresses. I recently watched a movie starring Jay North called "The Teacher" from 1974. I thought he was a great actor in that movie as well.
I grew up with this show and it's values. The shows nowadays doom our young people into becoming insolent little pains that truly turn into 'menaces' in their own right...
Alex Wiggs Thank goodness we got to be what we were before it all changed.
Amen!
There were still some good shows when I was growing up like veggie tales, adventures of virtue and of course, Mr. Rogers. NOW, they're all crud.
Though I do admit, I love Dennis, I love Lucy, and Bewitched. Any more recommendations?
One of my favorite westerns is 'The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp'. It has the values that are sadly missing in this day and age. You might try 'Highway Patrol' (144 episodes) with Broderick Crawford... another great show...
Sorry not too fond of westerns. I'll recommend it to my mom...if she hasn't already watched it. Never heard of Highway Patrol. I love good, long series. Thanks.
Really great actors and writers. These shows will stand the test of time. Sorry Jay about your childhood but thanks for making these classics possible. I get lost in these shows and they relax me. But then the dvd ends and i need my nerve medicine like Mr. Wilson. lol
It took him 30 years to make peace with the show. wow
Abuse does that.
I always loved the show and all my friends would always say Mr Wilson. because of my last name.
Thank You All, for a GREAT SHOW, WHEN I WAS A CHILD. GOD BLESS EVERYONE ONE OF YOU♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
Naturally Jay has aged, but he still has the same smile :D
I hope Jay knows how much he’s loved by millions of people who he’ll never meet but who nevertheless respect, admire and support him. I’m so happy he found peace in FL. God bless you, Jay. As for the aunt and uncle who abused him, special place in hell for those two.
Hollywood is a cruel mistress that can be nice to some but mean to others. I love that you made peace with the show because we as fans want you to be happy and healthy. Dennis is still a great show
I love Dennis the Menace.
WOW! Gloria Henry is one great-looking 88-year old! I would have guessed her age at something closer to 68. I remember when I watched the show in its original run, I thought she was gorgeous. (I'm the same age as Jay).
Jay, I, and others of 1951 look our age, and that's a good thing
I'll say that "Dennis" was a more realistic depiction of the behavior of kids than shows like "Father Knows Best." And the show can still charm and amuse.
I feel so sorry for kids today. They have no TV idols to look up to. Back in the day; shows like Perry Mason brought a huge increase in young adults signing up for law. Same with Doctors nurses police officiers due to TV programming. After all we used to get our fashion sense teenage crushes new hip words new music our Mom's found their new living room colours all from watching TV programming. There are very few shows if any that offer the same to this generation. Entertainment was designed as a pleasant escape to allow us to forget our problems for an hour or two. I stopped going to movies and rarely watch American TV shows as you feel like there is no hope for this world. Whereas these old shows/movies always have some form of hope in them.
+Tarn Sand agreed ;)
@Tarn(open): I hear you. With the exception of news, sports, and maybe some forensic-based re-enactment programs, I don't watch much TV nowadays. If I want something entertaining(and yet that's honest), I'll gravitate towards MeTV or AntennaTV for classic programs. Once in a blue moon, admittedly, I'll watch a LAW & ORDER re-run on ION. Otherwise, that's that.
"HELLO MR. WILSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!" ..........."MARTHA WHERE'S MY HEADACHE MEDICINE?"
thecatman4ever Nerve medicine
I always wondered what was in his nerve "tonic". :)
Valium
It was good to see Jay is happy. We were in Marion Colbert School. He was a good guy then and it looks like he is a good guy now.
Best of luck Jay. If you every get to Australia look me up.

kos22us Well, the small town feel of Dennis as a character comes from the fact that Hank Ketcham - the creator of the character, who based the Mitchell family on his own, with him in the role of Henry, with his wife and son, who really were named Alice and Dennis - based the location of his comic strip in Witchita, Kansas. Kansas in general is a state of small town communities in which everyone knows everyone. Even the college communities of Manhattan, Emporia, Lawrence, and Kansas City are small when compared to states like Chicago, New York, California, and Florida. Dennis himself as a character was just the depiction of your typically average curious little boy who had misadventures with his band of friends - best friends Tommy and Joey, resident kid genius PB, tomboy Gina, and even love-struck know-it-all Margaret - much to the chagrin of grumpy retired neighbor Mr. Wilson, who really did like Dennis for all the trouble the boy and his playmates gave him.
I agree all of us that grew up watching that show loved it and have fond memories. A lot of what we did and where we went is gone now. I'm 65 and my sisters and I always watched the show. Not sure if it is true but there was a rumor going around when we were kids that Jay North was at the Star Theater in La Puente, California. Someone recognized him and that was the end of his being able to sit and watch the movie. Not sure if actually true. That Star Theater is still there but has been used for a lot of other things not so great as when we were kids. My dad would give myself and my sisters .35 each and that would get us in the Star Theater and one candy.
I love you all still. ❤️
They have dvds of Dennis the Menace? Cool. The last I heard they were being held up. It's a bummer to know what he was dealing with on the set. It's too bad a great old show like that hs sad stroies behind the scenes. I guess the dvd has some interesting deatails for the actors similar to this interview.
I love the little boy who played Seymour. He was really a good funny young little actor. I wonder what became of him.
I guess that it's hard to reconcile when a child grows up.
I'm 67 now and write .When I'm stuck, I stop, insert a DTM disc and go back to 1959-62 while eating a bologna sandwich. I finish and the words flow. Thanks DTM cast. And my grandchildren love you all!
Oh for some reason you sparked a memory of eating a bologna sandwich with sandwich spread that had the relish in it on white bread while watching Dennis the Menace, the mind is a wonderful thing.
ADORABLE SHOW WITH A WONDERFUL CAST. SHAMEFULLY, JAY WAS ABUSED LIKE TOO MANY OTHER CHILD STARS (DANNY BONADUCHE, ETC.). THANKFULLY, HE HAS FOUND PEACE AND STILL FRIENDS WITH HIS "MOM" AND MARGARET (GLORIA IS GORGEOUS!).
thanks
Jay was not always treated nicely. He has my condolences for any damage done.
even though Jay North made peace with the show, I'd still rather only watch the first season since everything was going great for him at that time until the second season.
I want to see the soap box derby episode. I think Dennis won a Lionel train and runs it at the end.
Love you Jay.. even in MAYA...
Jay North made an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show singing a blues song. Not kidding.
I'm 7 weeks older than Jay : ) I still watch DTM Also I'm the same age ad Mr & Mrs Wilson and I can compare me to them WHY do they look so old !!!! and not just them but others of the same, eg Alfred Hitchcock Presents (those ages 57-65) look more like ages 70s-85 !
I'm 62 & everyone thinks I'm 48-52
I just started watching this show a few days ago. I just finished season 1, and it's a really good show! I had no idea about Mr. Wilson; the show probably tanked in season 4 with the newcomers
I'm 7 weeks older as well! ( than Jay ) Everyone, yes, everyone thinks that I look a lot younger also.
Jay obviously had a good relationship with his mother, I wonder why he never told her about the abuse he was suffering
maybe he did, and she looked at him and said excuse me or either what? and unintended to spook him into not mentioning it again
If you're a fan of Gloria Henry, check out her facebook fan page "I love Gloria Henry."
producedinLA, Yes, she was one good looking lady.
If you notice sometimes Dennis has an angered look even his smile sometimes would have an evil aura, you can catch quick glances. But to say they didn't know seem wrong .. You can tell a happy child from an abused child its extremely obvious
Mr. Wilson aka Joseph Kearns looks like chip Coffey a bit
I was thinking the same thing but didn't know Chip's name. Its crazy how much they look alike.
season 2 on the dvd set.
He grew into a nice looking man!
The episodes with Joseph Kearns are the funniest,Gale Gordon was funny in his own way,but his greatest moments were on The Lucy show and Heres Lucy as Mr Mooney and uncle Harry
He was so handsome! I wish his aunt and uncle had been put in jail!
They are rotting in hell.
Who knew?
I watched DTM when it played on TV. Today’s shows suck big time.
Dennis's cowlick is cute.
@jasonbarnes926 wow thats cool do u speak to him if so whats he like?
betty white and gloria henry both died in 2021 gloria Henry died at ripe old ages 98 one day after her 98 birthday on april 3 2021 and betty white died of a stroke in her sleep on dec 31 2021 at ripe old age 99 before her 100th birthday
What happened to Tommy Dennis friend
He died in 2006 from a liver disease
We didn't have anybody to watch me so I was plopped in my pin that was strategically in front of the portable TV and I watched
Is Fremont still alive? Is he house trained yet?
You g
You giDr are good at all times
Really? That's a great little fun fact!
On the other hand, maybe his aunt's abusive rules helped get him the job and make him famous for being able to do things in only two takes? It can be a balance.
I had a little crush on Gloria Henry. Definitely was a Mom I'd Love to Kiss (I was nine, fer Pete's sake!).
Duke K, Me too. She was just really pretty.
No nostalgia for Joe Kearns, who had a long radio career as a narrator in SUSPENSE and appeared in many other radio dramas. He had a longer show biz career than any of the actors on Dennis, the Menace, which was a lousy cheesy TV show.
Joe Kearns played the role of Mr. Wilson better than Gale Gordon; same with Sylvia Field. Sara Seeger was not as good
FYI, gale played his brother so he coudnt and wasnt trying be like joe
well gloria henry is dead now, and both jay and jeannie are in ill health, oh well.
I met Jay at a toy show in Dallas in the 1990s, got an autographed 8 x 10 of him on his tricycle, and talked with him for a little while. He told me that it was fun to watch the children come up to him and be told by their parents that he was Dennis the Menace. The series was still showing in syndication, and kids would see him on TV as a child, then meet him at his public appearances and have a serious reality check going on in their heads looking at an adult just a short time after watching the show. Myself, as a child watching the show during the original broadcasts, I always pitied Mr. Wilson...no way for him to ever escape Dennis...except to die, I guess.
Who knew?
We love 💘you 4 ever.
This show actually saved my life and pulled me out of deep depression
