I'm confused about the meaning of 香 in the characters for Hong Kong. Is Hong Kong a fragrant port, a perfume port, or a banana port?

哈哈,谢谢你的问题!很乐意一起学习!Haha, what a great question! Your question inspired me to research more about the name of 香港。You were correct! The name Hong Kong is actually a phonetic translation of the city’s Cantonese name 香港 (heung gong), which literally means “Fragrant Harbour”. Historians believe “Fragrant Harbour” was a name inspired by the city’s past as a major trading post for fragrant incense. In particular, agarwood 沉香, known as the “King of Incense” - just two ounces of precious agarwood resin can sell for thousands of dollars. During the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and early part of the Qing dynasty (1636-1912), the villages surrounding Hong Kong(东莞)were noted for the production of incense. Agarwood was shipped, by boats, from a port in Hong Kong to provinces in China, Asia and even as far as Arabia. I believe that's the main reason how it got the name. Hope this helped with your question!

@@SoEasyChinese Thanks! I love your videos. Your color-coded text on the translations helps me understand and pick up words more quickly. (The other youtube chinese-learning videos I've looked at only use one color, which makes understanding the translations more cumbersome.)
