- Day 18 Kate Bush Deep Dive-
This is Part 1 of Kate Bush “Never for Ever” reaction Series. A ridiculously deep dive into Kate bush Delius (reaction). Kate bush Song of Summer Movie (1968) how she was inspired by the movie as well video reaction.. We discuss how young Kate Bush wrote ”Delius” as well as an analysis into this song.
HI and thanks again for your take on all things Kate Bush.
I will admit that this is one of my favourite songs of hers and has been since I first heard waayyy back then. Yes, it is bizarre, and yes the video can leave you doubting your sanity, worrying if you are having a stroke, or thinking that maybe someone has spiked your drink.
But this is often a dark album, sometimes very dark indeed. And even here it deals with some dark issues. But it is also a musical moment of great human empathy and compassion. Delius was a truly deeply flawed man and his own folly and excess broke himself and others and left his own life a picture of ruin. All brought upon himself by himself.
But it is interesting that this song is not just about Delius, but very warmly and lovingly dedicated to him by Kate who she described him as "an extraordinary man both in body and spirit." She writes lyrics that say:
"Delius,
Delius amat
Syphilus,
Deus,
Genius"
She sees past his cruelties, disregard, and unrestraint and sees something pure and heroic about him - his music. Do we, should we, still love someone's art, when we discover their dark secret? Her answer is "yes" - because the art exists and is still beautiful. Kate's is a very humane approach, maybe naïve, but humane and compassionate. In this album it is a moment of light, and heart in a largely terrible world that the album inhabits.
Maybe i’m crazed or something wrong with me but I find the video completely normal lol. Yeah I think you’re right it does feel a little darker than the last two albums. As far as Delius I can understand Kates empathy for him. I’m sure he was a genius but if it wasn’t for the people who took care of him he might not have been so well known. Those unsung heroes! But either way I love Kates humanity
@@popcornphilosopher Hi and thanks for replying and I like the fact that you found the video "normal" (quite a lot of people find it very distracting - especially when Delius is portrayed - usually because they are unaware of him beforehand). There is a youthful naïveté to her portrayal of him and lionizing of his music while largely overlooking his many, serious failings. It is something that Kate herself had to confront later on in her career when Rolf Harris' (she had worked with him on several songs and even featured him as backing vocal) crimes came to light. She took the necessary and proper decision to largely eradicate him from her remastered versions - for ultimately we can all take a more nuanced approach to a person's failings from a distance, but it becomes more up close and personal, and when those failings so breach society's norms, and so violate its laws in a manner that lays waste to other people's lives, our previous, more kindly approach must often, and properly give way.
The next song deals with a similar idea - what happens to a musician when they die? Does their music inevitably die with them - or do they really live on through it. It is worth noting about the next song a little piece of convergence related to it. Around this time Kate was interviewed and was asked what her favourite song was. She said it was "Number 9 Dream" by John Lennon (Never For Ever was released the same year that John Lennon was killed). Just before he was killed John Lennon had Babooshka on his own personal playlist. And it is worth listening to "Blow Away (For Bill)" and compare its start - stop, slow down - speed up, and instrumentation to No'9 Dream
I didn't know there was a video for this song! Thanks! Look forward to checking it out.
Oh, well I never saw this comment! Sometimes UA-cam!!! I thought it was cool that she did a video for this song because so far it’s the most abstract.
One of the reasons I was surprised it had a video...
I saw that memorable TV docudrama - back in the day - probably the same time that Kate did (or perhaps on a re-run). All I've done is think about the film from time to time (ever since). Kate Bush, on the other hand, wrote and recorded an atmospheric, immortal, timeless song about it. What an achiever!
I wonder if it’s a psychic thing? Catching parts of TV shows documentaries news stories, and being able to intuit more than is being said and then writing a song. Ive done it too and it’s the first time I’ve ever heard of anybody else doing this. Either way, I really enjoyed the movie way more than I thought.
Nice deep dive, really enjoyed it. Kate's work deserves this level of attention.
Thank you so much I really appreciate it and I agree and I’ve been loving, really digging into each song!
Wow good research! Never knew any of this!
Yeah, doing research on Kates work has been so interesting! Thanks so much
Really great in depth review. Admire how you do you homework as well. PS: your Cher is so good at the end always makes me chuckle. Great stuff.
Thanks for appreciating the work that goes into these videos! And yeah Cher is basically a running joke on this channel now but I love her too!
Your voice is so versatile!! I am shocked by tbe tonal extremes that come out when you do those little mimic moments. Not surprising that you would be drawn to Kate. I think you must check out Lisa Gerrard from the group Dead Can Dance. She is also one of those rare singers who can take us absolutely anywhere and can drol😊😊😊
I have to check her out. Thank you so much though that’s really nice of you to say.!
The video to this is as amazing as the song. She is so beautiful and talented . Peerless
Stunning! And I wouldn’t be surprised if Björk was a influenced for her swan dress!
Another excellent and well-researched review. I am so glad that you are taking this new approach. Keep up the good work
I appreciate that thank you. It’s definitely a lot more work but it’s a lot of fun too!
Thank you I really enjoy your videos your channel...its my favorite one. Your a lot more fun and funny then most....
Wow I thank you you really made my evening!
Great again. I think you picked up her character well. On a couple of occasions Kate described her childhood as lonely with even her best friends at school being a bit cruel to her. On the other hand in late 1978 when being asked if she missed her friends while being constantly flown around the World she said no. what she missed was having time alone to think and work. She said all her best work was done when there were no distractions. Yes she did watch a lot of TV and actually built it into her daily routine 76/77. She would generally watch the "serious" TV 9-12 in the evening before songwriting between about midnight and 3/4 in the morning.
Thanks a bunch! Oh that makes so much sense to met. Although I haven’t seen very many documentaries, the ones I’ve seen I’ve said she had a happy childhood. But then again, I think everyone’s childhood is a little complicated. It’s so strange, but I relate to Kate so much. Even though our backgrounds are very different. I have similar songwriting habits
Yes she had a happy family life but her brothers were quite a bit older. She did a Tiswas (children's TV) interview with Sally James where she mentions her loneliness and mentions her dislike of having to learn the Violin - so explaining the origins of the song. (April 1979)
@@mjarve909 In a magazine interview she said her friends would stop talking to her for no reason and that she didn't enjoy school that much. She opted out of dance lessons because she didn't like the teacher. This stopped her from getting a place in a dance school when she left high school early. She had to rely on drop-in sessions in Central London but fortunately, she discovered Lindsey Kemp who was running public pay-at-the-door sessions
I love your detailed reactions - I wondered if you had watched the Russel Harty talk show episode with Kate and Eric Fenby.
Thank you so much! No I didn’t but the quote I found might have been from that! Do you know where I might see it?
@@popcornphilosopher It is on UA-cam if you search Russel Harry Hate Bush. The interview is a bit short and you can see that Kate was still not taken very seriously. Apparently they had the opportunity to have a much longer chat later. The odd begining to the show is a reference to the previous week when he had been attacked by Grace Jones.
Lovely work again, PP. Have you ever read David Mitchell's amazing novel Cloud Atlas, and/or seen the film? The section set in 1931, with the irascible composer Vyvyan Ayrs and his amanuensis Robert Frobisher, was based on Delius and Eric Fenby.
I’m not sure where I got the back story about Delius, think I saw the Video and was intrigued by the visual. Anyway thanks for picking it apart and making others think about the content 🙏
Yeah I think maybe those are the songs I’m probably most excited about covering are the songs people don’t talk about as much! Thank you!
Looking forward to Blow Away for sure! At some point I would love you to review another Kate Bush track called Under The Ivy it’s not very well known but well worth your attention.
@@paulhendy9901 that’s a Demo right? I am thinking about doing another katebush demo week.
@@popcornphilosopher It's the B side to RUTH so you should get there eventually - but there is a live recording.
Thanks for Chering!
Lol Cher puns never cease to make me laugh!
Yep, this one's a grower. I've always thought of it as an interlude but have been loving it so much lately. I think Kate's a swan in the video, no? "Did she say syphilis?" ...something we've all asked ourselves at some point! Loving your videos and Cher impersonations. Keep 'em coming!
Lol. I wasn’t sure if I heard her right. But those are the best kinds of lyrics. I’m pretty sure she’s the only one who’s rhymed genius and syphilis in a song! Glad you like my Cher lol!
Ken Russell is one of my favourite movie directors. I love that such an obscure movie was an inspiration for her. Oh and I agree, Delius was a d*ck
I need to watch more of his movies. I really enjoyed it even the Delius was the worst.
@@popcornphilosopher Ken Russell also did a little TV movie about composer Edward Elgar, if I remember correctly.
Nice one, Io 👍 .. I had gathered this was written about the composer Delius, but knew nothing else about him or the song, so thanks for the extra info .. I'd never really thought of this as an actual song ( with verses and choruses etc ), but more of a musical interlude with a fantasy atmosphere .. But I still enjoyed how it fit with the magical and mysterious feel of the whole album. .. Cheers, Wayne
Actually that’s exactly what I was thinking too. That it feels like a prelude or an interlude, but finding out more about it’s background. It gave me more appreciation for what she was trying to do. And it’s gonna be a lot musically Thanks, Wayne and cheers!
Thank you so, so much for creating and posting this video. "Delius" is perhaps my favorite song on the "Never for Ever" album, and even though I knew the general background story, I never knew that Kate actually got to meet Eric Fenby and that he complimented her so generously on her song and music video. I always imagined Kate was portraying a mayfly or damselfly in the video, as referenced by the buzzing near the end of the song. You've also motivated me to watch the "Song of Summer" TV movie! Thanks again! 🎹🎶
The movie is definitely worth watching. As long as you don’t mind smaller poetic movies. It’s not action packed but I found it very engaging! I’m glad you liked the video thank you!
@@popcornphilosopher You're most welcome and yes indeed, the movie sounds like just the kind of thing I enjoy; I love those classic BBC dramatizations. And if it's good enough for Kate, etc. :)
@@popcornphilosopher I watched and thoroughly enjoyed the movie; so beautiful, engaging, and real. I read that Ken Russell once said it was the best film he ever made, and that Eric Fenby himself found it deeply moving and the portrayals absolutely true to character. Thank you again for leading me to discover the movie and rediscover Kate's wonderful tribute.
Fantastic video again. As I'm sure others have said, I always considered this song to be an atmospheric interlude and never looked into the background but you have given this song much more impact and I thank you.
Yeah I kind of felt the same way but finding out my background really gave this song deeper meaning! Thanks for watching!
Another very good reaction. The extra work you put in really deserves more views and comments. Thank you.
The next track 'Blow Away' really is one of my favourite Kate Bush tracks. The other track on this album that I cannot get out of my head is "The Wedding List", there is an excellent Live version UA-cam that I highly recommend!
Aw thank you so much! I appreciate that I really do try plus Kate Bush‘s work is very inspiring. Blow away is either going to come tomorrow or Sunday!
Schubert, Schumann and Wolf are all thought to have died from Syphilis. If you ever feel like immersing yourself in some really tragic piano music, try Schubert's Piano Sonata in B minor, which he composed as he was nearing his end. Schumann's death was absolutely ghastly - it affected his brain very badly, and he passed his final days in a an asylum, in a state of terrible distress.
Wow, I had no idea about Schumann nor house, so many composers died of syphilis. I kind of knew how bad it was, but not that prevalent. I’ll check out the Schubert piece. Thanks for the suggestion!
Babooshka, army dreamers, and breathing all have music videos, and the wedding list, egypt, Delius, and violin have unofficial videos, but are also great you should make a video/videos watching them
Oh, that’s good to know. I think I’ll do the official videos separately I’ll just talk about the unofficial ones as part of the reaction. Thanks for the info!
@@gavinlambert1129 it's a great song shame it wasn't in the album
React to Tina Turner river deep mountain high my favorite song.. the Phil Spector version...
That’s actually my favorite Tina Turner song! Even if he was a creep. I guess like Delius You gotta separate the man from the artist
@@popcornphilosopherIt was one of the songs Kate performed as part of her KT bush band set in the pubs in 1977
Rip Tina Turner
I know, so sad! I was gonna do a video about it because she really meant a lot to me. But I feel like everyone’s doing a video about her.
