- Today, we’re going to talk about vocabulary words for natural disasters. Knowing these words can help you understand important safety information and news.
Earthquake: This is when the ground shakes suddenly because of movements under the earth. In Korean, we call it "지진."
Hurricane and Typhoon: These words both describe very strong storms with powerful winds and rain. A hurricane happens in the Atlantic Ocean, while a typhoon happens in the Pacific Ocean. They are basically the same type of storm but have different names depending on where they are.
Tsunami: A tsunami is a large wave caused by an earthquake under the ocean. This wave can become very high and powerful when it reaches the shore, causing serious flooding and damage.
Flood: A flood happens when there is too much water in an area, often because of heavy rain or a tsunami. The water covers the ground and can go into homes and streets.
Blizzard: This is a very strong snowstorm with heavy snow and wind. In a blizzard, it’s hard to see because of all the blowing snow, and it’s dangerous to go outside.
