    There was an earlier album too that Phil Collins played drums on for Peter Gabriel. It was one of the first 3 albums. I think Peter said there was just too much masking of all the synth sounds that he worked so hard on achieving. So he cut the cymbals so the synths came through.

    The album with no cymbals was Peter Gabriel's "So." I always liked that aspect of it too :)

    3:48 Pizza's here!
    Interview with Greg Calbi. Starring Steve Carell.
    Those are my two jokes. Now onto the serious stuff. This man is amazing in his interviews. He should quit, learn everything about everything, and teach everything there is to teach.

    I like explanation about stem mastering the most,
    stem mastering for me is muddy waters...
    it is moving responsibility of mixer to mastering guy

    Brilliant interview! outstanding presentation! but av proved a lot of Pros wrong with just using some good plugs from waves, soft tube, BX and MANY more, I just let my ears do 80% of the job, The only outboard gears i use to master, is my tube comp, compressor my ears and an AD converter. If you like let me have an address to send you one or two mastering project of mine to prove that I get the same sound if not better than some big studios! Am currently residing in Ghana.

    Experienced engineers for sure. And engineers you can talk to/ speak about stuff. I can train a monkey to twiddle knobs. A colleague of mine once said "If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys".

    I was scrolling through the credits of the latest Kimbra album because it's so emotionally moving and guess what name I saw... Greg Calbi.
    Didn't think much about it and then just a minute ago I was going to the credits of another one of my favorite albums, Sorry by Meg Myers... and again guess what I saw, Greg Calbi.
    Case closed

    The cymbal-less Peter Gabriel album was not "So". That's silly. All you have to do is listen to that album. In fact the first sound you hear on that album IS cymbals. 😀 The correct album is PG's third self-titled album ('Melt'). It's also the album that introduced that gated drum sound that was emulated so much during the 80s. The "no cymbals" approach seems to have also been employed on PG's fourth self-titled album ('Security'). There's some hi-hat, but no crash cymbals.

      @deetgeluid 7 років тому

      Who really cares. It's not gated reverb. It's compressed/gated(not even sure) ambient mic's. The whole feeling of the album is just a "dry" no cymbals feeling. Just like "security"! (his best IMHO). Further developed by Kate Bush on "Hounds of Love" (1985). The best 80's stuff!

      Who cares about anything, I guess? I was replying to an earlier post (ua-cam.com/video/79E_2QCv95g/v-deo.html&lc=z22cdhfgirrvgdeu2acdp433ncspsupa1pug5wf1rahw03c010c), and there's no mention of reverb in my post.
      But if you wanna split hairs, you could say it's gating the sound of drums reverberating in a (big) room. Personally I don't think the 'Melt' album sounds dry at all, it's full of ambience, even in the drum sound. 'Security' on the other hand, is pretty claustrophobic. I like the album, but always disliked its early digital, plastic-y sound.
