It was originally developed as a multiplayer only game (ala Unreal Tournament, our favourite game at that time) .. The single player game was forced in at record time after being mandated from higher up. I had never made a game before, never mind written AI code ... it was definitely a trial by fire when suddenly given the task of making it single player! The end AI (artificial ignorance) was a result of lots of unbalanced values in their behaviours, and a really poor navigation system that had big gaps in the data .. No it was an Unreal Tournament game that wasn't even intended to have a single-player component, made by people who were fans of Warhammer but had so little time and resources to design something more original that they just slapped this together to meet an unfair deadline. On top of that the task of making the singleplayer was dropped on the dev team last minute, while they were already struggling to make the deadline for just the multiplayer, and none of these guys had ever designed A.I. for a game before.
Isn't that what happened with Starcraft? I know that it happened with Warcraft, except Warcraft was based off of Warhammer Fantasy. ...and now I think about it, I wouldn't be surprised if the spacey aspects of World of Warcraft's Legion expansion were at least partially inspired by Age of Sigmar.

This feels like this is supposed to be a co-op game or something, like it was intended to be played with your squad controlled by different players. That combined with the maps that feel like something from a multiplayer game leads me to believe this was supposed to be an only multiplayer game with a campaign as a bonus.

I'm going to assume that this is one of those many games that came out around the same time that "Tribes" and "Unreal Tournament" was out, and the game was designed as a "Team multiplayer tournament game" first and a crap single player game second? I'm willing to bet that the game was made so that all the characters were supposed to be played by other players in a big, multiplayer team game, but if you didn't have other players, any character on the team that didn't have a player controlling it got run by the crappy AI. Sure, they put a "Story mode" in there for a single player game, but the main design of the game was most likely that people would play this game as big, multiplayer team tournaments, I'll bet. They REALLY wanted to be another "Unreal Tournament".

@Max William Lauf I suspect the system checked chroma key colour by hex value or something, and so they just popped in "0" which is black. OK actually it is a series of zeros and would likely be something more like "0x000000", but still the logic was "0 == false, therefore 0 should be nothingness". Mind you, Magenta is just a colour you don't use often and "0xFF00FF" is easy to remember. No really, that is almost certainly a big part of why we chroma with magenta. It has an easy to remember hex value. You'd be disappointed how common that type of easy to remember thing takes priority.
