People have been commenting about undervolting the CPU. I'm sure it'll make a difference, but from the creators point of view, you don't wanna spend time doing that, your time is best spend on the craft not fixing your tools if you know what I mean :)
I think creators should spend time on finely tuning their tool. Lots of professionals do. For example: barbers tune their clippers and sharpen their blades. Photographers will constantly play with and change camera settings to produce the right look.

Undervolting is easy, it would take no time at all for someone to learn to do it, if you're a content creator you don't want less cores, that is just silly, it would take someone an hour or two to undervolt and test a CPU and that's it, they'd have a great CPU that runs cool and gets all the performance if not more than they thought they were getting.

I changed 3 numbers and fixed the hot 5800x issues. Was very easy and only took 5 minutes. Stock voltage is too high. Change PPT to 120, TDC to 75, and EDC to 110. Great balance. Boosts to 4.5Ghz and stays under 80C under full load.

There are two reasons for that to happen The first reason is Zen 3 processors essentially come overclocked from factory. Yes I know, you can fine tune everything further, my point here is the processor already utilizes available resources to their fullest out of the box and happily goes up to the very limit. Think of AMD’s Precision Boost as a reversed throttling: the processor recognizes available thermal headroom and utilizes it, allowing itself to add more voltage and clocks. This is why you will see high temperatures on pretty much any Zen3 CPU. If you don’t see that, that only means you either reached some other limitation, or you are simply leaving performance on the table. This is why 5900x and 5950x generally run “cooler”. Lower clocks, that’s it. Their performance is slightly hindered by inter-chiplet connections, so they usually can’t go as high as a 5800x would. Which brings us to the second reason is single full chiplet design of 5800x itself. A Zen3 chiplet is very small. You have 8 active cores on the surface area being couple of times smaller than core region of the upcoming Intel’s new generation i9, but performance is just as high. Good thing is, it’s better per watt than Intel. Bad thing is, it’s much harder to cool down due to small surface area. As the result, you are limited by temperature. You have a tiny little hot spot which has to be cooled, but you might not have enough surface area to dissipate energy off it if your heat transfer is not ideal. As the result, processor is limited to thermal performance of a tiny spot over the IHS. This is why you see air coolers struggling with Zen3. This is why your coolant temperature is so low. This is why Arctic designed offset AM waterblock mounting, to cool the hot spots more efficiently. This is why der8auer got insane overclocks off Zen3 using his fooled Intel peltier chiller. The only reason why 5600x is cooler is it does not have 2 cores. The only reason 5900/5950 is not do that is more pedestrian voltages due to more conservative clocks. 5800x sits right at the thermal limit for a single chiplet of this size. But is that a bad thing though? Doubt it. I would not avoid 5800x in general. Sure, it might be suboptimal for extremely hot climate without conditioner, in which case I’d get a 5600x and a conditioner, lol. It’s not the best for the people who have to use small and thermally suboptimal PC cases or want to keep a penny here and there by using an air cooled either. In this case 5600x sounds much better. 5900/5950 are good options, and they are indeed bit easier to cool down, but they are really hard to find now. No stock. Which leaves 5800x as the only reasonable top tier option. And unless you are buying a processor with an intention of massively overclocking it even further, which honesly does not make a lot of sense, you should not be worrying about temperature too much. I’d undervolt it to get 5 degrees lower and that’s it. That’s how AMD processors behave these days, and if your motherboard is at least half decent, it should handle 5800x well. Temperatures should not bother you too much. It goes as hot as AMD allows it, and I guess these guys know what they are doing. It is possible to undervolt the thing a little bit for better thermals, that tends to help with temperatures a lot. And I would do that, if I were you. To be honest, I really don’t understand is that “don’t waste time with processor” point of view. Imagine a creator who consistently follows this idea. Like, a commercial photographer or camera man who would rather roast a lens saying “yes I know I can walk closer of further away from the subject to adjust perspective, but I’d rather shoot more pictures than walk back and forth, if you know what I mean”.. Clearly, this does not get anyone anywhere. Not saying you are like that, of course not. But the mistake is very similar. You see, we creators all have our tools. Some tools are trivial and easy to use, some tools need some tailoring to our needs, and some require to be mastered. Gaining proficiency with our tools is an important part of growing as a creator. Sure, a processor is not a brick, and it is not directly connected with content creation either, but at the same time, there is no need to be a microelectronics engineer to fine tune it, and if you do, you’ll get much more form it. Undervolting the thing is merely optimizing this tool for your workflow, it’s easier than you think, and actively denying this makes absolutely no sense.. Don’t be afraid of it. Your channel name literally says tech, which implies you are supposed to at least try being professional about it. What a pro would do if faces something unknown in the field? He learns it 😉
@protato822 Crasho no it the actual cpu being the issue even in gaming people reporting temps in the 60-80 temp region which is insane. Considering all the other ryzen wouldn't go over 60 while streaming and gaming off the same pc
@protato822 Crasho u said it ur self he on a 360mm aio and hitting 77c on a ryzen cpu. I don't know if u know but ryzen cpu normally way below 60c inless extreme overclocked and then only hit 75c due to voltage. The reason the 5800x has worse temps over the other 2 is because it a binned 5950x with cores turned off unlike the others which made from scratch

IT IS your Kraken Cooler that is causing the heat issues , very common dispute on Amazon in germany. Also the reason I went for the Noctua U12a and my idle Temperatur is 32 degrees max overclocked to 4.2 ghz. The problem with this video without criticizing you too much is that you took one CPU that Had the heat issues and just assumed that this would apply to all cpu of the same model on the market. Furthermore correlation does not causation . Just because it acts this way does not mean that it inevitably has these Problems, please to not spread such misinformation without full in depth analysis. Lastly I suggest you switch cooler and make an update on this. I think you owe US one :)

I have had the 5800x for a month. My cooler is an Artic freezer 34 eSports Duo. All I use it for is gaming so I'm not stressing it that much. The highest temperature I've seen so far was 72.7°. Thank you.
@@MacCoyzkie it is not.. the creator uses an NZXT hotbox and has AIO installed on top, both putting 10-10C on it at least.. If you have a good mesh case & AIO in front, you won't reach 60C while gaming...
I know I'm a month late but if you're having issues, I'm pretty sure I can help you fix it. First of all, upgrade to the latest BIOS. Earlier BIOS versions shove WAY too much power into the 5800X for some reason. After that, enable the "AMD Overclocking" tool and enable PBO2 (Not regular PBO), also known as the "Advanced" setting on some mobos. After doing this, override the PBO limits and set your PPT, TDC and EDC to 125W, 80A and 120A respectively. Finally, set an all core PBO2 offset of -10 and then test the stability and performance of your system (decrease to -5 if you get a random crash or blue screen). You should hopefully find that your performance is the same (or maybe a tiny bit less) but your max temps should decrease quite a lot. I have a cheap £35 air cooler on my 5800X, and adjusting these values in my BIOS reduced my max temp in Cinebench R20 and R23 multi core from 87C to 75C.

@@tedcrilly1 Yeah it will have all the options, but they might be named differently. I have an MSI motherboard, so my BIOS will be different to yours. If you struggle to find the settings, I'd suggest asking for help on r/pcmasterrace or r/buildapc on Reddit 👍🏻 One thing to note is: Reducing these limits will lower your CPU's maximum performance a little bit. If you notice a significant performance decrease and your temperatures are good, I'd suggest trying PPT 130W, TDC 85A, and EDC 125A.
I heard that AMD has better and more accurate temperature sensor in the CPU and will often show the hottest point temperature in the CPU die instead of average temperature on the entire CPU. And their chips can withstand upto 105 degree C.
5800x here. Asus B550m. ARCTIC Freezer 7 X CO - Compact Multi-Compatible CPU Cooler for Continuous Operation, 100 mm Fan. Idle: 35c Normal computing (UA-cam and some extra tabs open, maybe some Among Us as well): 40c Rendering video (100% CPU load): 62c Must have been an issue with the hardware almost a year ago. Just built my desktop a week or two ago and it has no issues.
*Update* Had my 5800x since Novemeber 2021. I render 1080, 1440, & 4K videos (both in 30 and 60 FPS). While doing so, my 5800x is maxed out. In fact I am rendering a 4K video right now while typing this and watching your video here. My 5800x is running at 90%, and has been in the 90% range for the last 20 minutes. All cores are running between 3.8ghz - 4.1ghz. The temperature hasn't gone over 70C. I am sitting at 68C right now. I have a simple air cooler: ARCTIC Freezer 7 X CO. Not sure if I just got a lucky 5800X, or what. I only have 2 case fans. One in, one out (140mm & 120mm). They run pretty slow, just around 1,000RPM. They are be quiet! Pure Wings 2. Used to idle around 35C. But ever since upgrading from a Nvidia 1650 to a 3060ti, my idle temps have gone up to 40C, which is perfectly fine. Case is a Cooler Master MasterBox Q300L TUF Gaming Alliance Edition Micro-ATX Tower.
If only it was that simple to just get a 5900X. It's been 3 months since there was any stock in the UK and there's still no sign of when more will come. That's why i've had to get a 5800X.
Originally planned to get the 5900X but same issue - out of stock everywhere in the UK. Heard more will come around march but needed this PC upgrade ASAP so decided I'd buy the cheapest processor I could find new at the time just to get me going while I wait for 5900X to come back in stock. Sounded better than downgrading to a 5800X and spending the money I could've used on a 5900X in the long run. Currently running a 3600X and seems fine for now, but having to hold back on some heavier workloads. Hope 5900X becomes more easily available soon...
You're one of the fortunate ones. Look at my comment above. Some of these 5800X are indeed faulty and AMD knows it. There should be a recall. You can get a good one but you might get a bad one. I've had both.
thermal contact really matters, then again so does noise. a bad contact 240mm aio or with bad included fans is just a sad outcome for the user unfortunately vs a nh-d15's temps and noise.
@@out42c yep the worst part is unlike the 3700x vs 3800x which was just like a failed bin with capped tdp. the ryzen 7 lacks this bin/variant process so all are set to the same voltage/tdp standards which chip to chip has been proven to result in such outcomes. As amd claims zen3 is already a higher quality scilicon vs zen2. Or the difference between a 3600 and a 3600x. Being essentialy a chicken dinner bin in the x and the "regular' or "failed' bin for max oc and ideal/low voltage operation. Add that aspect with the varying VRM/chipset temp peformance among entry/1st wave x570 motherboards 80c+ vs sub 70c vrm. or PSU with 12v ripple. It just exposes how fragile zen2/zen3 and am4 really is from that as well as ram timings/fabric....but who knows AMD made so many fanbois cry as far as 3700x/3800x/3800xt and the sub sequent 3600/x/xt launches prices actual performance aspects and the fanbois called it a price gauge for a binnig process XD. As i boght a 3950x used for 600 bc at the time it was the fastest singlecore and most 4.4ghz cores you could get with zen2 or amd at the time for any amd system. Even in 4k 4.7ghz is a big difference on 1-2 cores vs 4.4 or 4.2 on some ryzens the 3950x can hit 4.3 ac even in itx which still is higher than a 3600/3700x AC of 4.2 talking pre pbo/oc. Now amd doesnt want to make them mad and offered 5800x at 450$ msrp XD as i just picked one up for 360$
I think your miss-understanding how the CPU works and the biggest clue is in the liquid temperature. The temperature you need to look at is each individual CPU. It’s pretty common for one of the CPU s to sit hotter than the other units, especially on single-threaded workloads. The temperature sensor will always quote the highest temps it sees. Quite a few other channels have covered the concept of temps especially on the 5800 and 5900 series chips with lots of cores. Ali from Optimum tech has a good video on why he uses a water temperature sensor as the basis for his temp settings.

yea I am just learning about this stuff and got 30c lower temps in the same spot in the same game with same settings after going from stock fans and crap cooler to all Noctua and under volting. Nearly fell out of my chair when I saw the results.
This chip significantly enhanced my performance in Lightroom and Photoshop. I use the Arctic liquid freezer II 280 AIO and even overclocked my cpu to get really good performance/temps. Maybe I just got a lucky chip but this chip is an absolute BEAST! And I’m coming from a Ryzen 7 3700x
nah that AIO is beast/thick...i got mine front mounted push pull p14 fans. 800rpm max for noise. and the temps are great. on a 5900x. I love that its only a single cpu header plug for 2 fans and a pump, I can put 2 of the same fans for push pull, and the newer model p14 fans can daisy chain up to 3 while still doing pwm. So i have the included fans as Pull, and the 2 additonals as push, the push are connected on the same motherboard header(, then in bios i just matched the push fans to my cpu headers fan curve. 2 plugs 4 fans no software truly a beast
Wtfffff man. After months of planning and stuff, I finally built my pc. I upgraded to this last minute and now I see this!? On a brighter side it’s been like a couple weeks and everything’s fine..
Just use the PBO2 and set the ppt to 133 watts and temps are perfect. All core max runs on cinebench at 4.65GHZ right around 80c stable as long as you want.
İm between 5600x and 5800x and because of these temperature videos i was moving towards to 5600x. So do u still use 5800x? How is ur experience after a year with these settings? Do recommend it? Should i get the 5600x or 5800x with overclock

You know it's pretty up to you. I saw many people buying 5800x with closed front case(and they were not able to take it off or they did not take it off). They didn't put extra case fans into their PC. Also they bought the cheapest paste and cpu cooler. I'm running 65 celsius (PBO: ON) on Valorant with a dark rock 4 pro, p500a Phanteks case, 7 piece of pwm 4 pin arctic case fans. My cinebench was 77 celsius. Hey there I also play valorant using the same cpu but when played stock with pbo on my temps touch 79 C in 15 - 20 min. Also I have a 360 castle Aio which is better that your cooler in terms of efficiency, but still the temps are high. Hence I think he is not misleading the audience. And if you temps are really 65 C please help me out. Thank you

I have been gaming and editing on my 5800x. And I haven't noticed a problem with the temp. Cpu stays around 45C for most of the tasks that I run (Davinci Resolve, various games, and even some XMR mining) I am using a Noctua NH-D15 for a cooler in an NZXT H510 case with 2 Noctua 140MM intake fans and 2 exhaust fans.

I have the 5800x and it runs hot for sure. I was originally going for the 5900x but grew tired of waiting for stock at MSRP and so went for the 5800x. A nice upgrade from the 3600x. A processor I enjoyed previously. That said, although the 5800x runs hot, I love this processor! It’s a middle of the road processor that excels at gaming and does rendering task really well.
this is exactly what I'm debating on right now from the 3600, especially since the prices are so cheap right now. You can get a 5800x for like $250 and the 5900x for $380 the value is incredible right now

I think it might be a combination of motherboard choice and the CPU being a higher tdp. I think that the extremely hot motherboard is keeping your CPU from being cooled effectively
I've never seen mine go above 75c. In games it's high 50s low 60s with PBO on, on an Asus x570 Crosshair VIII and corsair 115i platinum 280. Pretty pleased with it to be fair
@@mrbengerman8681 no I don't stream, the only things I have running some of the time are sim related stuff, voice attack, sim hub, bass shaker software, crew chief etc. Cooler is running in balanced mode and I have 6 LL120's running in quiet, and all is well with the world
I think you should do your research before Posting the video to such a large audience. First off how Ryzen measures temps is completely different to intel. Second 7nm process is much more efficient but due to smaller size you might see higher temps. You should be looking at total power draw instead of temps. 5800x is advertises as 3.8ghz base and one core will boost upto 4.7ghz. Yet this CPU boosts to 4.6ghz all cores and 4.85ghz two cores. And with curve optimisation it does 4.8ghz all core and 5.0+ ghz 2 cores (no OC required). Now if you had done your research on how AMD XFR 2.0 (Extended frequency range AKA AMD bosting algorithm) works then you would know AMD CPUs keeps boosting past their advertised speeds as long as the temps are below Tjmax. For 5800x Max. Operating Temperature (Tjmax) is 90c. If you think as a content creator you don't have to know this basic information then you are in no position to publish this video and spread misinformation.
I literally just ordered this after watching many people say it's "fine" since this is kinda by design. Yes it should run hot, AMD has a chart already on this, since ages ago. I'm a VFX artist mostly and also editor, but i can't have a cpu that is 1200 euros ( in my country, the 5900x ), so i went with the 450 euros one. I've got a Kraken x52, the one i use for my curent R7 1700. Not sure about my purchase and how it will handle temps, but i'm sure as f*ck i'm not gonna pay 1000+ euros for a 5900x
Someone has probably already said what I'm about to say, but you have missed the point here. If I made a offclock with no offsets and just let it run, it will always up its voltage until the cooling solution is maxed out. That is what this chipset will do. You have a cooler on it, so it ryxzen boosting itself to reach that thermal headroom. No matter how much you cool it, it will do this. The chip itself wasn't designed with youtube editing being its highest demand, or a kraken cooler being its end game cooling solution. I appreciate you are reporting your observations, but when ryzen said this is for creators, they weren't really talking about the same creator apple refers to. The chip is doing what it was designed to do. It isn't throttling, its just throttling your set up. It designed to be ideally used in custom made cooling solutions and rendering far larger projects. I kinda feel you've misrepresented its end use case.
or just bad inherent design or flaw possibly warpage from over mounting with previous use etc from user to user on the mounting hardware affecting overall contact/cooling potential. Pump could be on DC power and needs to be on a different setting, could be a weak high temp vrm that issue paired with a 12v ripple adds system voltage and heat just a self serving cycle with an inherently hot vrm or chipset.
I followed your advice, and I'm definitely not gonna buy a 5800X 3 hours ago and receive it on Thursday. No sir, I have no idea on how to tweak the PBO in BIOS to keep it cool with a Noctua NH-D14.
This can easily be seen from the tdp divided amongst the cores the 5600X has 10.8W per core the 5900X has 8.75W per core, the 5950X has 6.6W per core and finally the 5800X has 13.12W per core. This shows that the 5800X which a much higher wattage per core, therefore it would emit a lot more heat. The Ryzen 7 3700X before it only had 8.12W per core and it was a very cool processor.
You just recieved a bad sample of CPU. My 5800X runs 4,4GHz with 1.15V and runs with less than 72*C at maximum stress (10-20min) with cheap air cooler (for TDP up to 180W). So you just got a bad sample! With the same 5800X but better sample (with lower VID voltage) you will do a video of tribute to this CPU. It is a great CPU but every CPU samples are different so the resaults could be different. If you are not able to lower the voltage in BIOS (30sec of "work") so.............

When you talk the 5800X, it does run potentially hotter. A good AIO cooler is good but the case comes into play also. I have a 5800X in a highly ventilated case with a mesh front. Cases that have a closed front with either glass or solid metal may not get along well with CPUs that run a little hotter. Excellent air flow into the case is just as important as the cooler. It looks like your case has a solid front and pulling from openings on the sides. If so that could exacerbate your heating problem. Just my opinion though!
It can only be one of two problems. Cooling or the CPU. I would try, if you haven’t already, keeping the room to a steady temperature and then attach a beefy air cooler and check the temps. This is just to make sure your water cooler is working properly. Then I would try the radiator on the front of your case instead of the top. If neither of those yields different results then it’s the cpu not being able to transfer the heat out of the cpu case. I’m interested to see if you have any luck. Good luck man.
One word: PBO2 - to lower temps edit: 5800x comes overclocked from factory. Which should be mentioned, if the cpu is encouraged to avoid. PBO2 is the solution and lowers temps greatly with 20-30C if done correctly
I have the same CPU and cooler and have the same issue with heat. Running Cinebench it hit's 90 C quick and starts to throttle. Like others, I've been able to achieve better temps by undervolting it, but I shouldn't have to. I'm going to swap it out for a 5900x as soon as there is better availability.
I have the same problem with r7 5800x on cinebench on normal test multi core up to 86 and if i test it on 10 min i go up to 90 c with a liquid procesor cooling from corsair with 2 fans on a radiator.. in NFS Heat stay at 80 83 C and i undervolt it... On amd web page it sayd its ok up to 90 C idk what to do... If its runs at 83 i think its ok ? Also i updated my bios and my moather board is x570 plus gameing from msi..

I have a 5800X with a 240mm AIO push and pull system and it works jsut like you show. When I run a stress test it goes to 80 till hit the mark of 90º and stays there, reducing the clock as I push the test. Fortunatelly I'm a gamer and it's not usual to run applications that use too much multicore workloads, but I agree with you that it's pretty disappointing. I would change my processor if I could, but, it's too late... One more thing, I live in Brazil, it's pretty hot here..
But does the clockspeed ever go below the advertised base clock of 3.8 ghz? If not then it's working as intended because it's designed to boost as high as it can get before reaching the temperature limit where it will then downclock as needed to maintain the highest possible clockspeed right at the crest of the temperature limit.
I would still buy the 5800x, if your gonna be using the CPU full load 24hrs then turn down the CPU volts. You can set profiles with most motherboards either overclock or underclock.
the problem would still be the inherent high operating voltage regardless 1.47v singlecore for esports? as gpu is trying to run around 1v or less with uv, and rams trying to hit 1.4v at max. ideally as close to 1.35 as possible but at 1.47v single...as far as heavy use daily youd really want a good performing vrm from a temps/powerphase standpoint and a good quality psu/12v rail as well from a ripple at most load variances. Yeah the custom mtherboard or pbo2 undervolt really comes into play from a system health/lifetime standpoint.
Seems to vary wildly between different motherboards & BIOS revisions, i think its worth setting it up manually if you do heavy workloads regularly changing governor etc
It is insane for anyone who buys a serious CPU to not also acquire a serious cooling solution. I do not care how many fans or how much RGB your AIO has. It is still an AIO, and noctua has an air cooler which outperforms 99% of AIO's currently on the market. The noctua NH-D15 outperforms all AIOs within its price range. The only way someone is going to get the cooling performance they need for a high end CPU like this would be to get the 100$ NH-D15 cooler, or invest 200+ on a very serious water system. The NZXT AIO in this video is great for midrange CPUs, and it looks pretty cool, but it is in no way, shape, or form within the caliber of CPU coolers required to support this thing. I am personally using the NH-D15 SE AM4 cooler myself, and after about 6 hours of stress testing the highest temperature I achieved was 67C. If you use the wrong tools for the job then don't expect to get work done. There is also no comparison between a god tier air cooler and a mid range water cooler. With all tiers of product aside and the main focus being purely monetary: a 100$ air cooler is consistently outperforming 200$ AIOs, and is more than enough to keep the R7 5800X cool even with an OC.
I've been using one 5800x for video and vfx editing and since november and everything's fine! On idle is around 35° c and while editing or gaming reach maximums of 75° c

When it comes to gaming this CPU is actually amazing. Most of the games I play like to use 1 core for like 80-90% of the work and this CPU does a great job in them. This is the first time in all my years of gaming that I'm not CPU limited in certain games and it feels great. The 5800x runs hot, sure, but the people from AMD say that it's supposed to so as long as it's within spec I don't really care about how hot it runs.
The processor is designed that way - you need to do more research (like RTFM on the AMD website about it's architecture). TLDR: The Ryzen 7 5800x is designed that way - it's supposed to get hot - it's normal. You don't need to undervolt it. From the AMD website. "The latest Ryzen 3000/5000 processors (except APU models) differ from previous Ryzen generations in that they are no longer based on a single, large chip but use a multi-chip approach with smaller chips instead. Depending on the exact model there can be one (6 and 8-core models) or two (12 and 16-core models) actual CPU-Dies (CCD) on the package. Each processor also uses an I/O-Die (IOD), which contains things like the memory controller, PCIe controller, connections to the motherboard chipset and other functions. Furthermore, Ryzen 3000/5000 CPUs are using the rated temperature headroom (up to 95°C) quite aggressively in order to reach higher boost clocks. As a result, it is absolutely no problem and not alarming if the processor runs into this temperature limit. The clock speed and supply voltage will be adjusted automatically by the processor itself in order to remain within AMD’s specifications and to prevent overheating. Due to the higher heat density, higher thermal limits and more aggressive boost clock usage, it is perfectly normal that Ryzen 3000/5000 CPUs are reaching higher temperatures than previous generation Ryzen CPUs with the same TDP rating. Higher CPU temperatures are normal for Ryzen 3000/5000 processors and not a sign of that there is anything wrong with the CPU cooler." Sheesh.....
This was happening to me at first and I was like, what the heck why is it so hot? Figured out a few things that literally made it drop from 79 to now staying stead at the low 40s. All the issues I was testing led back to my AIO Cooler. Fans need to be pulling air out so they should be facing the outside of the case. I had to move mine to the front of the case in order for that to happen. Also, the way the tubes are facing is extremely important because air bubbles can get trapped if there isn’t a solid way for coolant to flow in and out. For front mounting, the tubes began at the bottom and they were connecting up to my LCD Display. From doing research, this provides the best possible coolant flow without causing an air bubble issue. Can’t say this would fix anything, but I was working on my PC for at least 12 hours trying to figure out why it was running so hot, I made these changes, and now it runs at a cool tempt. Also, you’re spot on, the 5800x runs hot in general so that’s why cooling is going to be extremely important in keeping those tempts down. Love the video and thanks for sharing man!!!
Don't mean to necro a post but this is exactly it. Your AIO should ALWAYS pull in air from the outside. If you pull air from the inside of the case you're just dumping hot air from the GPU into the radiator. Never ever use your rad as an exhaust unless it's absolutely necessary; even then you should probably reevaluate your build. No wonder this dudes temps are so high, not to mention his front intakes are almost useless with the glass front. They're basically just there for show at that point.
I think the issue with Zen 2 and 3 (especially with octacore CPUs) is the combination of this asymmetrical design with one fully populated CCD in the bottom right corner, the very high single core boost voltages, the fact that the sensor reports the hot spot temperature and the convex heatspreader. I don't want to get into the religion of how to apply thermal paste, but spreading it evenly and making sure that all corners are well covered lowered my temps noticeably.
Pretty sure that's what it happening. Two of the Ryzen systems I have built, 3600X and 5800X. Both of their motherboards, MSI and Asus both had very spicy auto settings right out of the box. After some tweaking, I was able to get less heat, more performance out of both processors. I imagine it's just tuning that is required in OP's case.
@@wifightit If you check forums a bit on 5800x, yeah... u have to set the voltage manually in the bios - basically undervolting it and you will see a lot lower temps. Yet i still want a 5900x to say goodbye to my 6700k which served me well for a lot of years. BTW 6700k on z170 asus hero, auto setting cpu ran well over 80 degrees on load... custom voltage brought that down to max 70 degrees... so same there...not only amd's actual chips and mobo's.
you can tell day 1 when you access bios to enable xmp after first clean boot and win updates....bios has it at 1.44-1.47v single core 70c+ in bios depending on your AIO(pump)/CPU fan operation in bios. Imagine after a year of running at 1.47 single core in esports etc...uptimes and ram god forbid its 3733 and overclocked....both voltages climbing by the day on zen3 launch day buyers...with 80c+ vrm on their motherboards and sup bar 12v rail on their psu. Those builds are doomed to fail within 3 years if not 2

Have you tried ignoring the temperature and realizing that the chip regulates itself so well that it doesn't matter? Why would a creator even be looking at temps!?
I went from an i5 3470 to a 5800x...so it was quite a big leap haha! I game and edit photos and videos and idle I'm around 35 degrees idle and never seen it exceed 75.
this doesn't deserve so many dislikes, you were just sharing your experiences along with the other people who went through the same thing and simply warning your audience that this could happen even with an expensive aio like the kraken. I don't understand the internet sometimes.
My 5800x never goes above 62 and I live in Southern California. My i7 7700k ran at 80 regularly but beasted through it though haha! All in all, as a 3D artist, I'm happy w/ the 5800x.
Just got mine today. I am an experienced overclocker and in running mine at 4.75 at 1.30 vcore , Asus x570 crosshair viii, lian li 360 push pull 60% fan speed my temps in a 10min cinebench 23 are no more than 62c at a llc level 4. If you have a good water cooler, and a good motherboard this chip runs great. Was able to push 1.32 at 48.25 67 max temp. I can see how out of box temps are high though. I was seeing around 1.4 vcore at load which would def increase temps by alot

The problem has to do w/ restrictive elbows delivering liquid to the CPU cooling head and often they are also mounted at the heat exchanger. It is usually the same CPU cooling head hardware used in 240 or 360 units, but the flow restriction is in those elbows. If you look at the Arctic cooler, it does NOT use any elbows and that is the main reason its cooling performance is so good in all tests. I am building a system based on 5700X, which is a renamed/reissued 5800X and will use the Arctic 240 unit, which also has a thicker radiator, ie. more surface area to dissipate the heat.
I have this prosessor and i run this prosessor at 4.7 ghz oc at 1.22 V and it stays at good temps, cinebench r23 max temps around 72C and under gaming (Warzone paired with RTX 3070) around low 50s sometimes high 50s and under idle it stays around 35-42C. Cooling it with a NZXT Kraken Z63, and i have it on my H500i Case, that case is known for having bad airflow.
Nope, he is absolutely correct folks. Some of these chips are faulty. I've had one (should have kept it) that operated in normal temps and a second one (I have now) that runs too hot on a 360mm AIO. We're talking boot up of 86C and gaming at 91C. You're going to have to underclock it if you gat a bad one. Has nothing to do with silicon either it's AMD's manufacturing. I might swap it for a 5900X in the future. Right now the rig is just sitting in a box I'm so disgusted.
I have 5800x i never pas 71 degrees. You will recognize it wrong, you probably applied the thermal paste incorrectly. Max temperature I have at full load 70 degrees.
When I first got my 3600X, it was running 80C under load. It seemed normal. I have since tweaked the bios, and now I bench in the 60s. I wonder what motherboard settings you're running.
Ryzen is designed to do this, it boosts to as high of a clock speed as it can maintain (this is above your advertised base clock) and then once it meets the temperature limit it throttles to maintain that speed/temp. The limit is about 80c by default iirc. As long as you're getting the expected performance then I don't see cause for concern, if fans get loud change the curve since that's unlikely to help much anyway.
I'm using a "budget" AOI CPU cooler, and I use HWINFO64 to keep an eye on temperatures.... I fully appreciate that not everybody is geared up to be a geek and have to learn all this stuff. But there are multiple temperature readings per core, so the first thing is to identify exactly which temperature you should be 'worried' about (as per-core temps will fluxuate a lot). With an all in one cooler, I'm not exceeding 73 degs even when running Prime95 (WAY more intensive than DaVinci). I did however start to reach 80 degs initially until I cleared all the thermal paste, and used some Noctua thermal .... and far less of it. Now the temps are great, 40's at idle, 60's when gaming, 70's when intensive. I have a 3070 with a huge 3 fan setup blowing its obscene lava hot air onto the CPU, so I had to learn about undervolting, just to bring my GPU temps down (which also made the card silent, which was amazing as its SO LOUD with all 3 fans > 60% speed). If you are that way inclined, you can solve your CPU temp issues without any physical work... look into "PBO curves" ... in terms of actual effort, it legitamately involves around 8 keystrokes, and a restart....but its also 'advanced' and related to the scary beast that is 'overclocking' (or 'undervolting'). In actuality, you change one option form 'auto' to 'negative', then you type in a number, my 5800x with MSI X570 motherboard was happy with me setting the number to 15... without jargon, this means setting a -15 curve on all cores (you can handle each core one by one and experiment with the ideal numbers to get the lowest temps and highest performance).... but if you want a 2 minute fix thats not necessarily the super ultimate optimal settings, then do a quickl google on Precision Boost Overdrive (or just type "PBO Negative Curve")... there's also some sub-10 minute videos on youtube that show you how, literally step by step and click by click. Hope that's of use to somebody....and hopefully the future equivalent CPUs from AMD are less susceptible to certian conditions causing wild temperatures. Do keep in mind that a CPU running at 80 is NOT going to break your system....its not ideal, but its perfectly capable of tolerating those temperatures... it's probably best you let it automatically slow itself down a bit to drop the temperate if so, thus you'll have to wait abit longer to scrub through a timeline of special effects....buat least your GPU is taking care of the render).
upgraded to 5800x from FX8 series. Runs great, still have the same cooler from FX8 8350 Got it brand new for only 250$ (had really much luck to pick up that) So for that money I couldnt have got better. Using it for video editing and games with 1080Ti. I use my GPU for render so that solves my problem. My FX8 series served me for almost 10 years. Hope this one can do this too :D Also FX8 could run everything maxed out with 1080Ti even tho it was a bottleneck. Now with 5800x I get much more FPS in games and can run them in 4K too
Clearly you don’t understand the concept of thermal headroom. They’re supposed to run up against the temperature ceiling. You’re always pushing against a trio of ceilings. Heat, power and clock speed. When you push the core faster it requires more power and creates more heat. That’s literally every single cpu ever made. The system bios just automatically dials things in for you and keeps everything within a specific performance envelope at all times.

Yea I would check to see out of the box how it utilizes its voltage. I've noticed every generation of Ryzen the voltage has been getting more aggressive. When 3000 released every one was in shock that they ran hot especially in idle the Temps spiked all over the place. When I decided to upgrade my 2700X to 3700x I noticed it too. So I decided to undervolt and let the CPU boost its self but I saw with an undervolt the boost was all over the place from 4.4 to 4.1 In the end I went with an all core over clock and I got it stable to run all my work loads and games. Temps got tamed at idle and full load. Of course I get that most ppl want to plug and play or get to work I guess lol
@@fynkozari9271 the TDP on the 3700x looks to be on base clock As the boost increases the voltage goes up and the Temps fly up. Last weekend I built my cousins first PC b550 with a 3600. I gave him my stock 2700x cooler because he didn't have enough on his budget for an aftermarket cooler. Any who stock stock. While playing warzone Temps would spike up to the 70'S and his boost would drop from 4.2 to 4.0 back and fourth. I went into bios and messed with the voltages set it to 1.26 and bam kept boost at 4.2 and Temps on mid 50's. I left it like that for him with out doing a manual OC because he's not the PC enthusiasts type but he wanted it quiet with out fans ramping up like a turbine. It was like that on my 3700x also but with much higher Temps
I wish future generation focuses more on efficiency, they just keep pumping performance but the efficiency comes crashing down, maybe we'll get to CPUs using 1000w alone for a single part before people would take notice lol.
@@equation1321 dont disable core performance boost. Your cpu will no longer boost to amd advertise boost speed, it will run at stock speed. You want to disable precision boost override aka PBO in the bios.
Disabling Core Performance Boost makes your CPU run at 3.6 GHz instead of 4.2 GHz. You'll lose some performance. That difference is 40° Celcius difference. My own experiement with stock cooler before disabling CPB iwas like 75-90° under heavy load, Now its max 50-55 under heavy load. I Think running cool is better than high FPS
This is nice to know, I game with mine almost exclusively and the hottest I have seen it go (with max boost @4.85ghz ) was 62 degrees Celsius (average like 54 degrees Celsius ). I also have a cool room though and the cpu aio cooler is set up as my intake,
Thats not a "problem" that's the maximal performance you can get. So, the CPU scales with your coolness... Better coolness, better performance without OC or shitty things. That's PERFECT IMHO Edit: in AfterFX Rendering i got 60-75°C In Games about 50-80°C Idle: round about 40 C° (summer in Germany) With a scythe fuma 2 So, it's not hot as f... for my 5820kOC - 80°C was "normal" in AfterFX and co.

So to answer your question no the heat isn't a problem if you have good cooling and airflow. The problem is the WHEA errors and restarts that have been reported all over the place with these.
I have 5800x with Dark Rock Pro and max temp is 80°C in CB20 after multiple runs. Max frequency all cores is 4650Mhz. Single core is 4850Mhz. No stability issues.
Never exceeded 78c while rendering 4k for over 4 hours with an x62 AIO, 2 intake fans of the same AIO and 2 outs(1 on top and 1 at the back.). Dunno if I was just lucky.
I enabled PBO2 and limited the cpu to 95W instead of the usual 105W and it hasn't reached past 71C ever again. Sure, I lose some multi core performance in benchmarks (about 300 points in R23), but in real time I found it negligible in terms of render times and can still get videos out quite fast. It also didn't affect my single core performance so I was able to game just fine as well while keeping lower temps. I'm kind of disappointed on how hot the CPU can get, but with a little tweaking, now I can get upwards of 5GHz single core when gaming and still get 4.2GHz all core while rendering

82c when running my 5800x in cinebench multi. Using an artic freezer 240mm aio. when gaming, usually around 60c. now just surfing, at 35c. full load is a little toasty but i think well within operating threshold.
@@theTechNotice My test results are 63c / 1568pts in single core and 90c / 14736pts in multi core, Cinebench r23. In long run is that going to reduce life span of this CPU? It doesnt crash but in Ryzen Master it does show red.
I have a Noctua U12S and max temp is 71, so no, buy a good case, good cooler, have a nice airflow and there's no problem, one thing, don't overclock IF and memory controller clock, meaning, use 3200mhz RAM

LOL yeah....it is a bit dissapointing though. I see the 8 core as a bridge between professional/throw money at things 12/16-core R9's and semi professional/enthusist R5's.
I don't quite understand how your 5800x was running so hot. I do not have this issue, and I monitor the temps of my PC VERY closely. Understand, if you do not have a good motherboard, the VRMs on the mobo could be inefficient, therefore delivering really poorly regulating power creating high heat and instability. Not all boards are created equal, and just because a board supports a CPU, that does not mean it's good. If you left the voltage for the CPU on AUTO, that's bad (on all platforms).
In my case after a week rendering 4k videos and editing on premiere pro. My 5800x gets near 80C when I'm applying more stress during the edition of the video, but also my 8G GPU from ASUS STRIX get near 64C. Surprise when I start rendering the CPU gives above 90% performance but the GPU drops to 24% performance so temperature in this case was GPU 51C and CPU 80C. It yes a bit worry that kind of temperature, probably it's the price for performance. I have only 2 fans on my water cooling from cooler master, so I manage if I 'm editing and I see the temperature rising, I put my case to give max performance cooling, because mine has variable speed. And the water cooling also drops temperature faster after each stress session. :)
The CPU is, by design, finding and working near the thermal limit. No matter how much cooling you throw at it, it will increase frequency until it hits heat or power limits. This is a benefit of the CPU.
hey brother. love your channel. As a fellow tech youtuber who just got a 5900x this week, I'm telling you, even the 5900x runs really hot. Haven't felt it throttling though. But I definitely see faster rendering times for my 4k videos coming from my old but trusty 2700 (non X)
I've got the 5900x on another build here as well, and stress testing the cpu & GPU at the same time I don't see the CPU go higher than 73C, that's 10c lower than 5800x ? 🤔

People have been commenting about undervolting the CPU. I'm sure it'll make a difference, but from the creators point of view, you don't wanna spend time doing that, your time is best spend on the craft not fixing your tools if you know what I mean :)
I think creators should spend time on finely tuning their tool. Lots of professionals do. For example: barbers tune their clippers and sharpen their blades. Photographers will constantly play with and change camera settings to produce the right look.
Dude it doesnt even take 5minutes to do it. Go to PBO2 put all cores to negative and put it on 30. Went from 80 to 88°C on WZ to 60 68°C.

Undervolting is easy, it would take no time at all for someone to learn to do it, if you're a content creator you don't want less cores, that is just silly, it would take someone an hour or two to undervolt and test a CPU and that's it, they'd have a great CPU that runs cool and gets all the performance if not more than they thought they were getting.

I changed 3 numbers and fixed the hot 5800x issues. Was very easy and only took 5 minutes. Stock voltage is too high. Change PPT to 120, TDC to 75, and EDC to 110. Great balance. Boosts to 4.5Ghz and stays under 80C under full load.

There are two reasons for that to happen
The first reason is Zen 3 processors essentially come overclocked from factory. Yes I know, you can fine tune everything further, my point here is the processor already utilizes available resources to their fullest out of the box and happily goes up to the very limit. Think of AMD’s Precision Boost as a reversed throttling: the processor recognizes available thermal headroom and utilizes it, allowing itself to add more voltage and clocks. This is why you will see high temperatures on pretty much any Zen3 CPU. If you don’t see that, that only means you either reached some other limitation, or you are simply leaving performance on the table. This is why 5900x and 5950x generally run “cooler”. Lower clocks, that’s it. Their performance is slightly hindered by inter-chiplet connections, so they usually can’t go as high as a 5800x would.
Which brings us to the second reason is single full chiplet design of 5800x itself. A Zen3 chiplet is very small. You have 8 active cores on the surface area being couple of times smaller than core region of the upcoming Intel’s new generation i9, but performance is just as high.
Good thing is, it’s better per watt than Intel. Bad thing is, it’s much harder to cool down due to small surface area. As the result, you are limited by temperature. You have a tiny little hot spot which has to be cooled, but you might not have enough surface area to dissipate energy off it if your heat transfer is not ideal.
As the result, processor is limited to thermal performance of a tiny spot over the IHS. This is why you see air coolers struggling with Zen3. This is why your coolant temperature is so low. This is why Arctic designed offset AM waterblock mounting, to cool the hot spots more efficiently. This is why der8auer got insane overclocks off Zen3 using his fooled Intel peltier chiller. The only reason why 5600x is cooler is it does not have 2 cores. The only reason 5900/5950 is not do that is more pedestrian voltages due to more conservative clocks. 5800x sits right at the thermal limit for a single chiplet of this size.
But is that a bad thing though? Doubt it. I would not avoid 5800x in general. Sure, it might be suboptimal for extremely hot climate without conditioner, in which case I’d get a 5600x and a conditioner, lol. It’s not the best for the people who have to use small and thermally suboptimal PC cases or want to keep a penny here and there by using an air cooled either. In this case 5600x sounds much better. 5900/5950 are good options, and they are indeed bit easier to cool down, but they are really hard to find now. No stock. Which leaves 5800x as the only reasonable top tier option. And unless you are buying a processor with an intention of massively overclocking it even further, which honesly does not make a lot of sense, you should not be worrying about temperature too much. I’d undervolt it to get 5 degrees lower and that’s it. That’s how AMD processors behave these days, and if your motherboard is at least half decent, it should handle 5800x well. Temperatures should not bother you too much. It goes as hot as AMD allows it, and I guess these guys know what they are doing. It is possible to undervolt the thing a little bit for better thermals, that tends to help with temperatures a lot. And I would do that, if I were you. To be honest, I really don’t understand is that “don’t waste time with processor” point of view.
Imagine a creator who consistently follows this idea. Like, a commercial photographer or camera man who would rather roast a lens saying “yes I know I can walk closer of further away from the subject to adjust perspective, but I’d rather shoot more pictures than walk back and forth, if you know what I mean”.. Clearly, this does not get anyone anywhere. Not saying you are like that, of course not. But the mistake is very similar. You see, we creators all have our tools. Some tools are trivial and easy to use, some tools need some tailoring to our needs, and some require to be mastered. Gaining proficiency with our tools is an important part of growing as a creator.
Sure, a processor is not a brick, and it is not directly connected with content creation either, but at the same time, there is no need to be a microelectronics engineer to fine tune it, and if you do, you’ll get much more form it. Undervolting the thing is merely optimizing this tool for your workflow, it’s easier than you think, and actively denying this makes absolutely no sense.. Don’t be afraid of it. I don't know if u know but ryzen cpu normally way below 60c inless extreme overclocked and then only hit 75c due to voltage. The reason the 5800x has worse temps over the other 2 is because it a binned 5950x with cores turned off unlike the others which made from scratch

IT IS your Kraken Cooler that is causing the heat issues , very common dispute on Amazon in germany. Also the reason I went for the Noctua U12a and my idle Temperatur is 32 degrees max overclocked to 4.2 ghz. The problem with this video without criticizing you too much is that you took one CPU that Had the heat issues and just assumed that this would apply to all cpu of the same model on the market. Furthermore correlation does not causation . Just because it acts this way does not mean that it inevitably has these Problems, please to not spread such misinformation without full in depth analysis. Lastly I suggest you switch cooler and make an update on this. I think you owe US one :)

I have had the 5800x for a month. My cooler is an Artic freezer 34 eSports Duo. All I use it for is gaming so I'm not stressing it that much. The highest temperature I've seen so far was 72.7°. Thank you.
Exactly the same as me dude. It's around 36° at idle and around 68° max 72° while gaming on warzone for long periods of time.

I know I'm a month late but if you're having issues, I'm pretty sure I can help you fix it. First of all, upgrade to the latest BIOS. Earlier BIOS versions shove WAY too much power into the 5800X for some reason. After that, enable the "AMD Overclocking" tool and enable PBO2 (Not regular PBO), also known as the "Advanced" setting on some mobos. After doing this, override the PBO limits and set your PPT, TDC and EDC to 125W, 80A and 120A respectively. Finally, set an all core PBO2 offset of -10 and then test the stability and performance of your system (decrease to -5 if you get a random crash or blue screen). You should hopefully find that your performance is the same (or maybe a tiny bit less) but your max temps should decrease quite a lot. I have a cheap £35 air cooler on my 5800X, and adjusting these values in my BIOS reduced my max temp in Cinebench R20 and R23 multi core from 87C to 75C.

@@tedcrilly1 Yeah it will have all the options, but they might be named differently. I have an MSI motherboard, so my BIOS will be different to yours. If you struggle to find the settings, I'd suggest asking for help on r/pcmasterrace or r/buildapc on Reddit 👍🏻
One thing to note is: Reducing these limits will lower your CPU's maximum performance a little bit. If you notice a significant performance decrease and your temperatures are good, I'd suggest trying PPT 130W, TDC 85A, and EDC 125A.
I heard that AMD has better and more accurate temperature sensor in the CPU and will often show the hottest point temperature in the CPU die instead of average temperature on the entire CPU.
And their chips can withstand upto 105 degree C.

Had my 5800x since Novemeber 2021. I render 1080, 1440, & 4K videos (both in 30 and 60 FPS). While doing so, my 5800x is maxed out. In fact I am rendering a 4K video right now while typing this and watching your video here. My 5800x is running at 90%, and has been in the 90% range for the last 20 minutes. All cores are running between 3.8ghz - 4.1ghz. The temperature hasn't gone over 70C. I am sitting at 68C right now. I have a simple air cooler: ARCTIC Freezer 7 X CO. Not sure if I just got a lucky 5800X, or what. I only have 2 case fans. One in, one out (140mm & 120mm). They run pretty slow, just around 1,000RPM. They are be quiet! Pure Wings 2. Used to idle around 35C. But ever since upgrading from a Nvidia 1650 to a 3060ti, my idle temps have gone up to 40C, which is perfectly fine. Case is a Cooler Master MasterBox Q300L TUF Gaming Alliance Edition Micro-ATX Tower.
If only it was that simple to just get a 5900X. It's been 3 months since there was any stock in the UK and there's still no sign of when more will come. That's why i've had to get a 5800X.

Heard more will come around march but needed this PC upgrade ASAP so decided I'd buy the cheapest processor I could find new at the time just to get me going while I wait for 5900X to come back in stock. Sounded better than downgrading to a 5800X and spending the money I could've used on a 5900X in the long run. Currently running a 3600X and seems fine for now, but having to hold back on some heavier workloads.

You're one of the fortunate ones. Look at my comment above. Some of these 5800X are indeed faulty and AMD knows it. There should be a recall. You can get a good one but you might get a bad one. I've had both.
thermal contact really matters, then again so does noise. a bad contact 240mm aio or with bad included fans is just a sad outcome for the user unfortunately vs a nh-d15's temps and noise.
@@out42c yep the worst part is unlike the 3700x vs 3800x which was just like a failed bin with capped tdp. the ryzen 7 lacks this bin/variant process so all are set to the same voltage/tdp standards which chip to chip has been proven to result in such outcomes. As amd claims zen3 is already a higher quality scilicon vs zen2. Or the difference between a 3600 and a 3600x. Being essentialy a chicken dinner bin in the x and the "regular' or "failed' bin for max oc and ideal/low voltage operation. Add that aspect with the varying VRM/chipset temp peformance among entry/1st wave x570 motherboards 80c+ vs sub 70c vrm. or PSU with 12v ripple. It just exposes how fragile zen2/zen3 and am4 really is from that as well as ram timings/fabric....but who knows AMD made so many fanbois cry as far as 3700x/3800x/3800xt and the sub sequent 3600/x/xt launches prices actual performance aspects and the fanbois called it a price gauge for a binnig process XD. As i boght a 3950x used for 600 bc at the time it was the fastest singlecore and most 4.4ghz cores you could get with zen2 or amd at the time for any amd system. Even in 4k 4.7ghz is a big difference on 1-2 cores vs 4.4 or 4.2 on some ryzens the 3950x can hit 4.3 ac even in itx which still is higher than a 3600/3700x AC of 4.2 talking pre pbo/oc. Now amd doesnt want to make them mad and offered 5800x at 450$ msrp XD as i just picked one up for 360$
I think your miss-understanding how the CPU works and the biggest clue is in the liquid temperature. The temperature you need to look at is each individual CPU. It’s pretty common for one of the CPU s to sit hotter than the other units, especially on single-threaded workloads. The temperature sensor will always quote the highest temps it sees. Quite a few other channels have covered the concept of temps especially on the 5800 and 5900 series chips with lots of cores. Ali from Optimum tech has a good video on why he uses a water temperature sensor as the basis for his temp settings.

This chip significantly enhanced my performance in Lightroom and Photoshop. I use the Arctic liquid freezer II 280 AIO and even overclocked my cpu to get really good performance/temps. Maybe I just got a lucky chip but this chip is an absolute BEAST! And I’m coming from a Ryzen 7 3700x

nah that AIO is beast/thick...i got mine front mounted push pull p14 fans. 800rpm max for noise. and the temps are great. on a 5900x. I love that its only a single cpu header plug for 2 fans and a pump, I can put 2 of the same fans for push pull, and the newer model p14 fans can daisy chain up to 3 while still doing pwm. So i have the included fans as Pull, and the 2 additonals as push, the push are connected on the same motherboard header(, then in bios i just matched the push fans to my cpu headers fan curve. 2 plugs 4 fans no software truly a beast

The temps spike a maximum of 87 but that is only maximum, it never stays there.

Just use the PBO2 and set the ppt to 133 watts and temps are perfect. All core max runs on cinebench at 4.65GHZ right around 80c stable as long as you want.

You know it's pretty up to you. I saw many people buying 5800x with closed front case(and they were not able to take it off or they did not take it off). They didn't put extra case fans into their PC. Also they bought the cheapest paste and cpu cooler. I'm running 65 celsius (PBO: ON) on Valorant with a dark rock 4 pro, p500a Phanteks case, 7 piece of pwm 4 pin arctic case fans. My cinebench was 77 celsius. Also I have a 360 castle Aio which is better that your cooler in terms of efficiency, but still the temps are high.
Hence I think he is not misleading the audience.

I have been gaming and editing on my 5800x. And I haven't noticed a problem with the temp. Cpu stays around 45C for most of the tasks that I run (Davinci Resolve, various games, and even some XMR mining) I am using a Noctua NH-D15 for a cooler in an NZXT H510 case with 2 Noctua 140MM intake fans and 2 exhaust fans.

I have the 5800x and it runs hot for sure. I was originally going for the 5900x but grew tired of waiting for stock at MSRP and so went for the 5800x. A nice upgrade from the 3600x. A processor I enjoyed previously. That said, although the 5800x runs hot, I love this processor! It’s a middle of the road processor that excels at gaming and does rendering task really well.

I think it might be a combination of motherboard choice and the CPU being a higher tdp. I think that the extremely hot motherboard is keeping your CPU from being cooled effectively
I've never seen mine go above 75c. In games it's high 50s low 60s with PBO on, on an Asus x570 Crosshair VIII and corsair 115i platinum 280. Pretty pleased with it to be fair

I think you should do your research before Posting the video to such a large audience.
First off how Ryzen measures temps is completely different to intel.
Second 7nm process is much more efficient but due to smaller size you might see higher temps. You should be looking at total power draw instead of temps.
5800x is advertises as 3.8ghz base and one core will boost upto 4.7ghz. Yet this CPU boosts to 4.6ghz all cores and 4.85ghz two cores. And with curve optimisation it does 4.8ghz all core and 5.0+ ghz 2 cores (no OC required).
Now if you had done your research on how AMD XFR 2.0 (Extended frequency range AKA AMD bosting algorithm) works then you would know AMD CPUs keeps boosting past their advertised speeds as long as the temps are below Tjmax. For 5800x Max. Operating Temperature (Tjmax) is 90c.
If you think as a content creator you don't have to know this basic information then you are in no position to publish this video and spread misinformation.
I literally just ordered this after watching many people say it's "fine" since this is kinda by design. Yes it should run hot, AMD has a chart already on this, since ages ago. I'm a VFX artist mostly and also editor, but i can't have a cpu that is 1200 euros ( in my country, the 5900x ), so i went with the 450 euros one. I've got a Kraken x52, the one i use for my curent R7 1700. Not sure about my purchase and how it will handle temps, but i'm sure as f*ck i'm not gonna pay 1000+ euros for a 5900x

Someone has probably already said what I'm about to say, but you have missed the point here. If I made a offclock with no offsets and just let it run, it will always up its voltage until the cooling solution is maxed out. That is what this chipset will do. You have a cooler on it, so it ryxzen boosting itself to reach that thermal headroom. No matter how much you cool it, it will do this. The chip itself wasn't designed with youtube editing being its highest demand, or a kraken cooler being its end game cooling solution. I appreciate you are reporting your observations, but when ryzen said this is for creators, they weren't really talking about the same creator apple refers to. The chip is doing what it was designed to do. It isn't throttling, its just throttling your set up. It designed to be ideally used in custom made cooling solutions and rendering far larger projects. I kinda feel you've misrepresented its end use case.
If your idle temps are high, the cooler is not mounted properly in my opinion.
or just bad inherent design or flaw possibly warpage from over mounting with previous use etc from user to user on the mounting hardware affecting overall contact/cooling potential. Pump could be on DC power and needs to be on a different setting, could be a weak high temp vrm that issue paired with a 12v ripple adds system voltage and heat just a self serving cycle with an inherently hot vrm or chipset.
I followed your advice, and I'm definitely not gonna buy a 5800X 3 hours ago and receive it on Thursday. No sir, I have no idea on how to tweak the PBO in BIOS to keep it cool with a Noctua NH-D14.
This can easily be seen from the tdp divided amongst the cores the 5600X has 10.8W per core the 5900X has 8.75W per core, the 5950X has 6.6W per core and finally the 5800X has 13.12W per core. This shows that the 5800X which a much higher wattage per core, therefore it would emit a lot more heat. The Ryzen 7 3700X before it only had 8.12W per core and it was a very cool processor.

You just recieved a bad sample of CPU. My 5800X runs 4,4GHz with 1.15V and runs with less than 72*C at maximum stress (10-20min) with cheap air cooler (for TDP up to 180W). So you just got a bad sample! With the same 5800X but better sample (with lower VID voltage) you will do a video of tribute to this CPU. It is a great CPU but every CPU samples are different so the resaults could be different. If you are not able to lower the voltage in BIOS (30sec of "work") so.............

When you talk the 5800X, it does run potentially hotter. A good AIO cooler is good but the case comes into play also. I have a 5800X in a highly ventilated case with a mesh front. Cases that have a closed front with either glass or solid metal may not get along well with CPUs that run a little hotter. Excellent air flow into the case is just as important as the cooler. It looks like your case has a solid front and pulling from openings on the sides. If so that could exacerbate your heating problem. Just my opinion though!
It can only be one of two problems. Cooling or the CPU. I would try, if you haven’t already, keeping the room to a steady temperature and then attach a beefy air cooler and check the temps. This is just to make sure your water cooler is working properly.
Then I would try the radiator on the front of your case instead of the top. If neither of those yields different results then it’s the cpu not being able to transfer the heat out of the cpu case. I’m interested to see if you have any luck. Good luck man.

One word: PBO2 - to lower temps
edit: 5800x comes overclocked from factory. Which should be mentioned, if the cpu is encouraged to avoid. PBO2 is the solution and lowers temps greatly with 20-30C if done correctly

I have the same CPU and cooler and have the same issue with heat. Running Cinebench it hit's 90 C quick and starts to throttle. Like others, I've been able to achieve better temps by undervolting it, but I shouldn't have to. I'm going to swap it out for a 5900x as soon as there is better availability.

I have the same problem with r7 5800x on cinebench on normal test multi core up to 86 and if i test it on 10 min i go up to 90 c with a liquid procesor cooling from corsair with 2 fans on a radiator.. in NFS Heat stay at 80 83 C and i undervolt it... On amd web page it sayd its ok up to 90 C idk what to do... If its runs at 83 i think its ok ? Also i updated my bios and my moather board is x570 plus gameing from msi..

I have a 5800X with a 240mm AIO push and pull system and it works jsut like you show. When I run a stress test it goes to 80 till hit the mark of 90º and stays there, reducing the clock as I push the test. Fortunatelly I'm a gamer and it's not usual to run applications that use too much multicore workloads, but I agree with you that it's pretty disappointing. I would change my processor if I could, but, it's too late...
One more thing, I live in Brazil, it's pretty hot here..

But does the clockspeed ever go below the advertised base clock of 3.8 ghz? If not then it's working as intended because it's designed to boost as high as it can get before reaching the temperature limit where it will then downclock as needed to maintain the highest possible clockspeed right at the crest of the temperature limit.
I would still buy the 5800x, if your gonna be using the CPU full load 24hrs then turn down the CPU volts. You can set profiles with most motherboards either overclock or underclock.
the problem would still be the inherent high operating voltage regardless 1.47v singlecore for esports? as gpu is trying to run around 1v or less with uv, and rams trying to hit 1.4v at max. ideally as close to 1.35 as possible but at 1.47v single...as far as heavy use daily youd really want a good performing vrm from a temps/powerphase standpoint and a good quality psu/12v rail as well from a ripple at most load variances. Yeah the custom mtherboard or pbo2 undervolt really comes into play from a system health/lifetime standpoint.
Seems to vary wildly between different motherboards & BIOS revisions, i think its worth setting it up manually if you do heavy workloads regularly changing governor etc

It is insane for anyone who buys a serious CPU to not also acquire a serious cooling solution. I do not care how many fans or how much RGB your AIO has. It is still an AIO, and noctua has an air cooler which outperforms 99% of AIO's currently on the market. The noctua NH-D15 outperforms all AIOs within its price range. The only way someone is going to get the cooling performance they need for a high end CPU like this would be to get the 100$ NH-D15 cooler, or invest 200+ on a very serious water system. The NZXT AIO in this video is great for midrange CPUs, and it looks pretty cool, but it is in no way, shape, or form within the caliber of CPU coolers required to support this thing. I am personally using the NH-D15 SE AM4 cooler myself, and after about 6 hours of stress testing the highest temperature I achieved was 67C. If you use the wrong tools for the job then don't expect to get work done. There is also no comparison between a god tier air cooler and a mid range water cooler. With all tiers of product aside and the main focus being purely monetary: a 100$ air cooler is consistently outperforming 200$ AIOs, and is more than enough to keep the R7 5800X cool even with an OC.

We've been using Ryzen CPUs for many years now including the latest 5800X R7 without any issues. We started with the R7 1700 as soon as it launched.
I just bought this CPU hopefully I won;t have any heat issues,i an coming from a Ryzen 7 1700 as well.

When it comes to gaming this CPU is actually amazing. Most of the games I play like to use 1 core for like 80-90% of the work and this CPU does a great job in them. This is the first time in all my years of gaming that I'm not CPU limited in certain games and it feels great. The 5800x runs hot, sure, but the people from AMD say that it's supposed to so as long as it's within spec I don't really care about how hot it runs.

The processor is designed that way - you need to do more research (like RTFM on the AMD website about it's architecture).
TLDR: The Ryzen 7 5800x is designed that way - it's supposed to get hot - it's normal. You don't need to undervolt it.

Clocktuner fix idle temperatures, just need to run testing and apply the results for undervolt. Not big issue
Try under-powering it slightly in the BIOS. The 5800x is overpowered, you just need to find the power sweet spot.
This was happening to me at first and I was like, what the heck why is it so hot? Figured out a few things that literally made it drop from 79 to now staying stead at the low 40s.
All the issues I was testing led back to my AIO Cooler. Fans need to be pulling air out so they should be facing the outside of the case. I had to move mine to the front of the case in order for that to happen. Also, the way the tubes are facing is extremely important because air bubbles can get trapped if there isn’t a solid way for coolant to flow in and out.
For front mounting, the tubes began at the bottom and they were connecting up to my LCD Display. From doing research, this provides the best possible coolant flow without causing an air bubble issue.
Can’t say this would fix anything, but I was working on my PC for at least 12 hours trying to figure out why it was running so hot, I made these changes, and now it runs at a cool tempt.
Also, you’re spot on, the 5800x runs hot in general so that’s why cooling is going to be extremely important in keeping those tempts down. Love the video and thanks for sharing man!!!
Don't mean to necro a post but this is exactly it. Your AIO should ALWAYS pull in air from the outside. If you pull air from the inside of the case you're just dumping hot air from the GPU into the radiator. Never ever use your rad as an exhaust unless it's absolutely necessary; even then you should probably reevaluate your build. No wonder this dudes temps are so high, not to mention his front intakes are almost useless with the glass front. They're basically just there for show at that point.

I think the issue with Zen 2 and 3 (especially with octacore CPUs) is the combination of this asymmetrical design with one fully populated CCD in the bottom right corner, the very high single core boost voltages, the fact that the sensor reports the hot spot temperature and the convex heatspreader. I don't want to get into the religion of how to apply thermal paste, but spreading it evenly and making sure that all corners are well covered lowered my temps noticeably.
I have a feeling it would have something to do with the preset bios voltage there's always been issues with AMD motherboards overvolting CPUs
Pretty sure that's what it happening. Two of the Ryzen systems I have built, 3600X and 5800X. Both of their motherboards, MSI and Asus both had very spicy auto settings right out of the box. After some tweaking, I was able to get less heat, more performance out of both processors. I imagine it's just tuning that is required in OP's case.
@@wifightit If you check forums a bit on 5800x, yeah... u have to set the voltage manually in the bios - basically undervolting it and you will see a lot lower temps. Yet i still want a 5900x to say goodbye to my 6700k which served me well for a lot of years.
BTW 6700k on z170 asus hero, auto setting cpu ran well over 80 degrees on load... custom voltage brought that down to max 70 degrees... so same there...not only amd's actual chips and mobo's.
you can tell day 1 when you access bios to enable xmp after first clean boot and win updates....bios has it at 1.44-1.47v single core 70c+ in bios depending on your AIO(pump)/CPU fan operation in bios. Imagine after a year of running at 1.47 single core in esports etc...uptimes and ram god forbid its 3733 and overclocked....both voltages climbing by the day on zen3 launch day buyers...with 80c+ vrm on their motherboards and sup bar 12v rail on their psu. Those builds are doomed to fail within 3 years if not 2

Have you tried ignoring the temperature and realizing that the chip regulates itself so well that it doesn't matter? Why would a creator even be looking at temps!?
I went from an i5 3470 to a 5800x...so it was quite a big leap haha! I game and edit photos and videos and idle I'm around 35 degrees idle and never seen it exceed 75.
Don't leave us with a message like this obviously you should mention your CPU cooler too.

My 5800x never goes above 62 and I live in Southern California. My i7 7700k ran at 80 regularly but beasted through it though haha! All in all, as a 3D artist, I'm happy w/ the 5800x.

Just got mine today. I am an experienced overclocker and in running mine at 4.75 at 1.30 vcore , Asus x570 crosshair viii, lian li 360 push pull 60% fan speed my temps in a 10min cinebench 23 are no more than 62c at a llc level 4. If you have a good water cooler, and a good motherboard this chip runs great. Was able to push 1.32 at 48.25 67 max temp. I can see how out of box temps are high though. I was seeing around 1.4 vcore at load which would def increase temps by alot

The problem has to do w/ restrictive elbows delivering liquid to the CPU cooling head and often they are also mounted at the heat exchanger. It is usually the same CPU cooling head hardware used in 240 or 360 units, but the flow restriction is in those elbows. If you look at the Arctic cooler, it does NOT use any elbows and that is the main reason its cooling performance is so good in all tests. I am building a system based on 5700X, which is a renamed/reissued 5800X and will use the Arctic 240 unit, which also has a thicker radiator, ie. more surface area to dissipate the heat.

You must be doing something wrong. My 5800x never goes above 50 degrees. I use a Kraken x73 AIO.
I have this prosessor and i run this prosessor at 4.7 ghz oc at 1.22 V and it stays at good temps, cinebench r23 max temps around 72C and under gaming (Warzone paired with RTX 3070) around low 50s sometimes high 50s and under idle it stays around 35-42C. Cooling it with a NZXT Kraken Z63, and i have it on my H500i Case, that case is known for having bad airflow.

Nope, he is absolutely correct folks. Some of these chips are faulty. I've had one (should have kept it) that operated in normal temps and a second one (I have now) that runs too hot on a 360mm AIO. We're talking boot up of 86C and gaming at 91C. You're going to have to underclock it if you gat a bad one. Has nothing to do with silicon either it's AMD's manufacturing. I might swap it for a 5900X in the future. Right now the rig is just sitting in a box I'm so disgusted.

My brother also has it with a custom AIO loop, and it runs stock at 76c. Though, its quite hot for his endgame pump.
I have 5800x i never pas 71 degrees. You will recognize it wrong, you probably applied the thermal paste incorrectly. Max temperature I have at full load 70 degrees.
When I first got my 3600X, it was running 80C under load. It seemed normal. I have since tweaked the bios, and now I bench in the 60s. I wonder what motherboard settings you're running.
Ryzen is designed to do this, it boosts to as high of a clock speed as it can maintain (this is above your advertised base clock) and then once it meets the temperature limit it throttles to maintain that speed/temp.
The limit is about 80c by default iirc. As long as you're getting the expected performance then I don't see cause for concern, if fans get loud change the curve since that's unlikely to help much anyway.
I'm using a "budget" AOI CPU cooler, and I use HWINFO64 to keep an eye on temperatures.... I fully appreciate that not everybody is geared up to be a geek and have to learn all this stuff. But there are multiple temperature readings per core, so the first thing is to identify exactly which temperature you should be 'worried' about (as per-core temps will fluxuate a lot). With an all in one cooler, I'm not exceeding 73 degs even when running Prime95 (WAY more intensive than DaVinci). I did however start to reach 80 degs initially until I cleared all the thermal paste, and used some Noctua thermal .... and far less of it. Now the temps are great, 40's at idle, 60's when gaming, 70's when intensive. I have a 3070 with a huge 3 fan setup blowing its obscene lava hot air onto the CPU, so I had to learn about undervolting, just to bring my GPU temps down (which also made the card silent, which was amazing as its SO LOUD with all 3 fans > 60% speed).
If you are that way inclined, you can solve your CPU temp issues without any physical work... look into "PBO curves" ... in terms of actual effort, it legitamately involves around 8 keystrokes, and a restart....but its also 'advanced' and related to the scary beast that is 'overclocking' (or 'undervolting'). In actuality, you change one option form 'auto' to 'negative', then you type in a number, my 5800x with MSI X570 motherboard was happy with me setting the number to 15... without jargon, this means setting a -15 curve on all cores (you can handle each core one by one and experiment with the ideal numbers to get the lowest temps and highest performance).... but if you want a 2 minute fix thats not necessarily the super ultimate optimal settings, then do a quickl google on Precision Boost Overdrive (or just type "PBO Negative Curve")... there's also some sub-10 minute videos on youtube that show you how, literally step by step and click by click.
Hope that's of use to somebody....and hopefully the future equivalent CPUs from AMD are less susceptible to certian conditions causing wild temperatures. Do keep in mind that a CPU running at 80 is NOT going to break your system....its not ideal, but its perfectly capable of tolerating those temperatures... it's probably best you let it automatically slow itself down a bit to drop the temperate if so, thus you'll have to wait abit longer to scrub through a timeline of special effects....buat least your GPU is taking care of the render).
Hmm, the Intel ComedyLake CPUs are running much hotter and need more energy as well. Everything is relative, as always. :)

Using it for video editing and games with 1080Ti. I use my GPU for render so that solves my problem.
My FX8 series served me for almost 10 years. Hope this one can do this too :D Also FX8 could run everything maxed out with 1080Ti even tho it was a bottleneck. Now with 5800x I get much more FPS in games and can run them in 4K too
The weak link would be the quality/suitability of the thermal grease used & whether it's properly applied between CPU & HSF ?
Clearly you don’t understand the concept of thermal headroom. They’re supposed to run up against the temperature ceiling. You’re always pushing against a trio of ceilings. Heat, power and clock speed. When you push the core faster it requires more power and creates more heat. That’s literally every single cpu ever made. The system bios just automatically dials things in for you and keeps everything within a specific performance envelope at all times.
For gaming its perfect I'm using a cooler master 212 hyper with max temps of 72.

Yea I would check to see out of the box how it utilizes its voltage.
I've noticed every generation of Ryzen the voltage has been getting more aggressive.
When 3000 released every one was in shock that they ran hot especially in idle the Temps spiked all over the place.
When I decided to upgrade my 2700X to 3700x I noticed it too. So I decided to undervolt and let the CPU boost its self but I saw with an undervolt the boost was all over the place from 4.4 to 4.1
In the end I went with an all core over clock and I got it stable to run all my work loads and games. Temps got tamed at idle and full load.
Of course I get that most ppl want to plug and play or get to work I guess lol

As the boost increases the voltage goes up and the Temps fly up.
Last weekend I built my cousins first PC b550 with a 3600.
I gave him my stock 2700x cooler because he didn't have enough on his budget for an aftermarket cooler.
Any who stock stock. While playing warzone Temps would spike up to the 70'S and his boost would drop from 4.2 to 4.0 back and fourth.
I went into bios and messed with the voltages set it to 1.26 and bam kept boost at 4.2 and Temps on mid 50's.
I left it like that for him with out doing a manual OC because he's not the PC enthusiasts type but he wanted it quiet with out fans ramping up like a turbine.
It was like that on my 3700x also but with much higher Temps
I have a 5800X and it finished exporting HD videos in under 4 minutes.

I wish future generation focuses more on efficiency, they just keep pumping performance but the efficiency comes crashing down, maybe we'll get to CPUs using 1000w alone for a single part before people would take notice lol.
Disabling "Core Performance Boost" Option in BIOS helps alot.

@@equation1321 dont disable core performance boost. Your cpu will no longer boost to amd advertise boost speed, it will run at stock speed. You want to disable precision boost override aka PBO in the bios.
Disabling Core Performance Boost makes your CPU run at 3.6 GHz instead of 4.2 GHz. You'll lose some performance. That difference is 40° Celcius difference. My own experiement with stock cooler
before disabling CPB iwas like 75-90° under heavy load, Now its max 50-55 under heavy load. I Think running cool is better than high FPS

This is nice to know, I game with mine almost exclusively and the hottest I have seen it go (with max boost @4.85ghz ) was 62 degrees Celsius (average like 54 degrees Celsius ). I also have a cool room though and the cpu aio cooler is set up as my intake,

So to answer your question no the heat isn't a problem if you have good cooling and airflow. The problem is the WHEA errors and restarts that have been reported all over the place with these.
I returned my 5800x for the 5900x, so happy I did. Cinebench r23 would instantly hit 90c then the bench would quit out

I have 5800x with Dark Rock Pro and max temp is 80°C in CB20 after multiple runs. Max frequency all cores is 4650Mhz. Single core is 4850Mhz. No stability issues.
Never exceeded 78c while rendering 4k for over 4 hours with an x62 AIO, 2 intake fans of the same AIO and 2 outs(1 on top and 1 at the back.). Dunno if I was just lucky.

I enabled PBO2 and limited the cpu to 95W instead of the usual 105W and it hasn't reached past 71C ever again. Sure, I lose some multi core performance in benchmarks (about 300 points in R23), but in real time I found it negligible in terms of render times and can still get videos out quite fast. It also didn't affect my single core performance so I was able to game just fine as well while keeping lower temps. I'm kind of disappointed on how hot the CPU can get, but with a little tweaking, now I can get upwards of 5GHz single core when gaming and still get 4.2GHz all core while rendering

82c when running my 5800x in cinebench multi. Using an artic freezer 240mm aio. when gaming, usually around 60c. now just surfing, at 35c. full load is a little toasty but i think well within operating threshold.

I have a Noctua U12S and max temp is 71, so no, buy a good case, good cooler, have a nice airflow and there's no problem, one thing, don't overclock IF and memory controller clock, meaning, use 3200mhz RAM

Probably because 3700x tdp 65watt. While 5800x tdp 105w. Imo its just a waste of electricity. 3000 series Ryzen are good enough for gaming.

I don't quite understand how your 5800x was running so hot. I do not have this issue, and I monitor the temps of my PC VERY closely. Understand, if you do not have a good motherboard, the VRMs on the mobo could be inefficient, therefore delivering really poorly regulating power creating high heat and instability. Not all boards are created equal, and just because a board supports a CPU, that does not mean it's good. If you left the voltage for the CPU on AUTO, that's bad (on all platforms).

In my case after a week rendering 4k videos and editing on premiere pro. My 5800x gets near 80C when I'm applying more stress during the edition of the video, but also my 8G GPU from ASUS STRIX get near 64C. Surprise when I start rendering the CPU gives above 90% performance but the GPU drops to 24% performance so temperature in this case was GPU 51C and CPU 80C. It yes a bit worry that kind of temperature, probably it's the price for performance. I have only 2 fans on my water cooling from cooler master, so I manage if I 'm editing and I see the temperature rising, I put my case to give max performance cooling, because mine has variable speed. And the water cooling also drops temperature faster after each stress session. :)
The CPU is, by design, finding and working near the thermal limit.
No matter how much cooling you throw at it, it will increase frequency until it hits heat or power limits.
This is a benefit of the CPU.
hey brother. love your channel. As a fellow tech youtuber who just got a 5900x this week, I'm telling you, even the 5900x runs really hot. Haven't felt it throttling though. But I definitely see faster rendering times for my 4k videos coming from my old but trusty 2700 (non X)
I've got the 5900x on another build here as well, and stress testing the cpu & GPU at the same time I don't see the CPU go higher than 73C, that's 10c lower than 5800x ? 🤔
