- Korean superstars Hyun Bin and Lee Dong-wook join us for a highly anticipated conversation about their respective careers in the Korean film and television industry and their espionage thriller Harbin, which will have its world premiere at this year’s Festival as a Gala presentation.
Hyun Bin is known for his remarkable on-screen presence in such award-winning drama series as My Lovely Sam Soon (2005), Secret Garden (2010), for which he won the Grand Award at the Baeksang Art Awards, and the megahit Crash Landing on You (2019-2020). He has also starred in numerous feature films, including 2010 Festival Selection Late Autumn, and has become one of the most sought-after actors in Korea and beyond.
Following his debut in the popular series School (1999-2001), Lee Dong-wook became a household name for Korean and international audiences through his lead roles in such series as My Girl (2005-2006), Scent of a Woman (2011), and Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016-2017), showcasing his range and versatility as a dramatic and romantic lead. He won the Top Excellence Award in Acting at the SBS Drama Awards for his role in Scent of a Woman and most recently appeared in the smash hit A Shop for Killers (2024).
Hyun Bin and Lee Dong-wook will discuss their first on-screen collaboration in Woo Min-ho’s Harbin (’24) and their respective career paths in this wide-ranging onstage conversation with TIFF’s Chief Programming Officer, Anita Lee.

The Qs were provided in advance, and the answers were prepared by their PR teams. Both of these actors are not smart enough to handle their huge and delirious fan base on their own. I completely understand the obsession over Michael Jackson, or even Beyoncé, but these two are nobodies in comparison. In fact, I did not listen beyond 2-3 Qs, waste of time. Those two do not have enough intellect to spend even 2 minutes on them. But you enjoy, by all means!

But the obsession with any Korean actor (besides the Queen of Tears guy, who is just the most accomplished and capable of them all in many aspects, in my opinion) is ridiculous. Strip them of their idol status and wealth / superior abilities they have in their actor roles, remove their make-up and, most importantly, take off their pants - and you will be unimpressed, guaranteed. Lol!

This is only possible when an actor's acting skills are good and popular.
Also, it is possible when an actor loves to act and is very diligent.
Lee Dong wook is currently filming a new TV drama. And there are other dramas that have already finished filming and are set to air on TV.
He is a great and respectful actor in every way.

I am a fan of Hyun bin and love listening to his cultured voice. I agree with him that watching a film in the theatre is a fabulous experience. Watching a recent film of Hyun bin, The Point Men, in the theatre and seeing the beautiful scenery as well as seeing the actors on the big screen could not be duplicated on the smaller screen. I truly believe Harbin will be an emotional expetience on the screen in theatres. Also the genuine camaraderie between Hyun bin and Lee Dong Wook off screen will also add to the excitement of the film. The Point Men was shown in theatres in Sydney Australia, and I hope Harbin will be shown in Australia as well. Good luck Hyun bin and Lee Dong Wook with Harbin.

During the pandemic I got hooked on Kdrama. Mr. Sunshine was my first and I was hooked. Memories of the Alhambra was next and I was very impressed with the acting and the plot. Their plots are so brilliant just like American movies used to be. The plots do not engage in the uncomfortable sex scenes but are leaving the delicate scenes up to our imaginations. Isn’t that what movies are all about engaging our imaginations. Thank you Korea for bringing entertainment back to the movies.

Great interview! What I love most is, they both have their own varied acting portfolios and are working together on this project and are both not afraid to try different genres. I also appreciate Hyin Bin acknowledging the impact covid had on the kdramas and the impact of streaming platforms. I think that had this been around before other projects make have been even more successful than they have been already. I wish them well in their new project.

During Covid, we came across Crash Landing On you while surfing Netflix. Up to that point I never watched anything with subtitles. After watching this drama we were hooked. Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin became our favorite couple and we have followed them since. The professionalism, hard work and discipline of Korean actors is simply amazing. I heard Hyun Bin say CLOY was unrealistic, yet the relationship (family, love, friends, neighbors) were precious. We could tell that before the series was over, they were both truly in love. No surprise, when they announced their relationship later. Over the past 4 years, we read a lot about Korean culture, customs and food, even tried some. By now we have embraced many talented actors and even expanded to Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai, yet Korean is the best. Thank you.❤

I come from Poland & I'am both European and Canadian. Mostly I see the European and an American movies, some Japanese. Till now I had no experience with Korean movies but from what I see now, they are very good and worth of attention. They are served on Internet or in Netflix. I've only seen two films with Hyun Bin (Memories from Alhambra" and "Crash landing on you") and I think these two films deal with extremely important topics. They required a completely different acting and showed the world important problems that we may face in the future, as well as those that influenced the history and relations of Korea divided into two Countries, South and North Korea. I am very interested in expression in the origin language and expression of feelings in performed movies as well as the film censorship of the acting and scenes, which is to me O'K, because I don't like to much of the liberal expressions and violence in the movies. Still not enough is said about the author of the script, Park Yi-eun, and they should also be at such meetings. I'm curious about their motivation for building such a script for both films. As for the former, I will look at them in their entirety, if Netflix shows these films. I haven't watched the JSA - Joint Security Area movie, only its trailers, but I can say that the comedy-drama "Crash landing on you" is an incredible success of the screenwriter of this film and the actors of the main roles, i.e. Hyun Bin, Son Ye-jin and other actors. Thank you for an information about two earlier movies such as: My Lovely Sam Soon (2005), Secret Garden (2010) and congratulation for Lee Dong-wook, for roles in such series as My Girl (2005-2006), Scent of a Woman (2011), and Guardian or "The Lonely and Great God (2016-2017)". I have to do my home work via TV to see these movies with such a delay. Congratulations to Korean TV and once again to Ms. Park Yi-eun for the films drama "39" and the drama "Something in the Rain" with Ms. Son Yi-jin and of course "Crash landing on you", one of the best movies and my favorite one.
