def all the other versions seem to focus very heavily on the romance aspect and completely ignore the comedic aspect of the novel, which in my opinion was the best part. glad to see it represented well!
Jane Austen focused on the comedic part in the novel, that's why this movie is so well done. I've read the book 3 times and this movie really gets it right.
I feel like he started smiling out of shock/surprise at first not just because he was confused, but because he felt relieved. Like he was sincerely expecting her to disregard or pretty much reject him without a thought. And here she is instead yelling at him, it means that he does mean something to her. what she was shouting about hadnt registered yet but he was just happy bc this was not what he was expecting adn thats a good thing. Also that thing he said in the beginning "I wish for once emma's love was no requited so she would have to pine over something for once" and this time she genuinely thought her love wasn't requited so what he said came true
This movie was AMAZING. Jane Austen made fun of these characters in her novel, and the movie gets that comedic side perfectly done. To me THIS is how you adapt corectly a Jane Austen book.
"Better to be without sense, altogether, than misapply it as you do" .. Such films has increased the sense of observing and learning .. eloquent English!

Oh no, them's fightin' words! XD No really though, this movie made me appreciate these two on a whole new level, I didn't think I'd love an Austen movie as much as Pride and Prejudice but this one was just too exquisite.
The portrait scene always confused me. Correct me if I'm wrong: Knightley called Emma's drawing of Harriet too tall to be sarcastic because what's really wrong with it is that it's ridiculous, right? And her father saying that they should frame it when it's done, that was an unintentional burn because Emma was already done and her dad couldn't tell, right?
They didn't think the painting was good. It's a scene to demonstrate how Emma thinks a lot about herself, since she considers herself a good artist and she is just average.
I checked the book and there is the impression that he is laughing a bit at the circle of flatterers Emma has. Also, this gem: "You have made her too tall, Emma," said Mr. Knightley. Emma knew that she had, but would not own it. xd
It's clearer in the book that Emma did draw Harriet too tall. Knightley is not prone to flattering Emma as everyone else is so he says it. While Emma knows it she is too stubborn to admit it, especially to Knightley. And yes, bless her Dad. Trying to be supportive but the painting is already done which is why Knightley laughs at the unintentional burn.
this movie was so good!!!! and also way sexier(?) than I envisioned the story when reading the book! Mr. Knightley looks so starkly different from my mental image of him - his face is much puffier, and he's more raggedy looking, and he's blonde, and I understand why he's attractive while at the same time not finding him especially attractive.
I'm 72 and I think Johnny Flynn is one of the MOST HANDSOME men I've ever seen! His lips have a perfect shape. His eyes are grayish light blue. His nose is kind of pointed and very masculine. The shape of his head is oval. When the camera is pointed at his face when he stands in place at the wedding, that shot showed how precious and perfect his face is I wish I was 35 years younger, I would travel the world just to be able to breathe in his essence...And he can sing and write music and poetry.
