Missed a couple weeks due to SXSW but back on track now with the first J Dilla track breakdown of the series. This episode goes over the sampling theory for the beat from the song Players by Slum Village
Project files and downloads available at beatbreakdown.net
This is why I love Dilla. He produced this track almost 17 years ago, but even with the technology evolving and all it's really hard to replicate what he did on this beat. I tried chopping the sample so many times the way he did that I just quit.
UchawiBeatz2K16 same... most of j dilla beats are really hard to recreate
I GET IT BRO!! I know exactly what you mean.
players was produced in 1996, prior to 2000, so around 21 years ago around the time you commented this, and 25 years ago as i type this comment.
@@blackvogue even more impressive. My comment was based on the release date of the song, but this is golden information
This still stands 20 years later. Dilla was a madman
Please do Slum Village - Fall In Love
RastaChaka verrrrrry good suggestion. Love that track!
+alejandro david venegas sample?
I would like to see that but tbh I gotta see htf j dilla chopped that airworks sample
What he did with the rappers delight sample was take a half bar where theres a bass note on the kick but not on the snare, he looped that, then he high-passed it, if you listen to the instrumental of the song you can hear it.
Edit: God damn I love randomly stumbling across comments I made years later and seeing the responses/upvotes. I was 15 when I wrote this one and already had my golden ears. Just a bit of a humblebrag. :P
Man the rapper's delight sample jus blew me away! I never would have guessed he was using those drums at all!
Kinda makes me wonder if he even bothered with preset drums or drumkits at all? What you think?
@@TeLarry an absolute cardinal sin. He would've never.
also the kick he used is the kick from Rapper's Delight just low passed and maybe pitched a bit.
@@bazthespaz95 Damn... I'm ashamed of havin drum kits now😞
@@TeLarry I used to rely on them and then I realised that I just wasn't achieving the organic sound that I wanted. No need for shame though, bro, whatever works for you to get the sound you want is the main thing! If you're happy with your sound and methods, that's what matters 🤘🏽
No one can decipher dilla
That's why he's the greatest.
Even T3 Baatin all said he would give others an idea of how he did the beats but you would need to compile it all together and apply some dilla magic.
Incredible artist.
bite your tongue & burn your fingers!!!! the goat is preemo.
i've always stated putting together true "remakes" is the hardest thing to do production wise. I personally don't dabble in remakes, but your ear has to be razor sharp. There's tons of industry-establish cats that couldn't remake 1 of the beats showed on this channel. Bravo man. keep them coming
remember dilla used an mpc3000 I've had one before and the groove or swing on that machine is crazy, Dr dre on his old stuff had 5 mpc3000's in his studio at all times I know it's the the machine but the person behind the machine but I swear that 3000 has soul
The crazy part is that I never would've found this song without this channel. Thank you. I had no clue who Slum Village was before this.
DILLA CHANGED MY LIFE
too me
Kudos to you for breaking it down. Recreating a Dilla track ain't easy. It's so close. Well done though!
I miss Dilla making hip-hop!
Great breakdown. Dilla had the baseline bouncing all over which makes it so special!!
"A really good 4 bar loop" haha like every detroit hip hop beat ever
Reverse engineering. Props to you and you, shows how much workin on it J Dilla did in beat making. 🎹🥁👏💥
Do Quasimoto - Basic instinct.
amazing bro
I love this breakdown the most! the educational aspect is dope! BTW: Dilla played his hi hat lines. He Probably took one hat hit and played it out on the record.
This Dilla track is BEYOND special...it's in my Top 3 Dilla beats
Nice job, my man.
Really enjoying these episodes man! You choose the best tracks to break down and explain it really well :D
I knew of the original song but not the sugar hill sample wow... thank you!
I’d like to have you break down
phatkat don’t nobody care about us produced by Dilla
Dilla feat Frank and dank thing of the past
Flying Lotus -Massage Situation sample vid plz!
my duuuuude you are too dope!!
Preciate it! Thanks for watching!
What about Common - Go or Other tracks from 'Be'
I love that bass note so much, dot doot dooot
Incredible. Really shows the genius of Dilla. Just stumbled upon your channel....great stuff man keep it up
great job! irs no surprise how advanced dilla was. i really dig your version
see if you can break down "purple" by jay dilla. that beat is too dope
Love the trouble shooting. Dilla's timing has always been the best part of music.
DO CLIMAX BY J DILLA!!!
This beat is so difficult to nail. Your version is good but still sounds off when compared with the original. I couldn't do any better though!
+bigbezet yeah not my best Dilla tracks are hard as hell! Maybe I'll try it again sometime and get it a little better
+Sandurz Haha i can imagine it being hard, Dilla's groove is ridiculous.
From the few Dilla tracks I've tried remaking they are simple but at the same time complex. Simple as they don't use lots of sounds or synths. However hard when it comes to making the drums sound like he did or chopping up samples in the way that he did.
ITS LEARNING THE BASELINES NOT HARD FOR STARTERS START HUMNING IT TO YA KNOW IT BY HEART I GAVE YOU A GEM OF ADVICE AS A BASS PLAYER MYSELF LOL PEACE P
He slowed down the Clap snare to get it more groovy, made the snare louder, and he made the bass pattern in a bit of a different way. Replicating genius is one of the hardest processes when it comes to artistry. You did make it seem very easy tho. Sorry if my comment sounded harsh
You should really do Quasimoto - Low Class Conspiracy
bassline is really difficult to remake .j dilla s bassline is very good .
Stakes Is High! please do stakes is high.
The world is Yours by Pete Rock too
Dilla beats are hard to remake. He had ears like a bat and some can t hear what he heard. I never heard anyone come close to recreating this beat here.
Really good stuff. Thanks for the files for downloading too. Hopefully you can keep this going, especially with song choices like the first 2 and what you have planned for the 3rd. Damn.
You gotta do DFTF or Waves by J Dilla those beats are crazy
D.M.C.G.L Definitely DFTF
he has to do Track 14 (1997 Batch) or Flowers, cuz those are ill asf
This is great! I'm really happy that i found your channel.
Man big props for tackling some Dilla stuff. Great channel. I subscribed!
from r/mhh, thanks man.
Sick breakdown! Keep doing these please!
Reason #372075 why J Dilla is probably one of, if not THE best producer of all time in ANY genre....
#TeamBoomBap
#AntiTrapMachine
#DillaTheGOAT
Amazing
thumbs up from Germany.Great series
you did it justice for sure
Love your channel bro come back
This dude is fire...
🔥🔥 This was so dope bro!! Love it!! ✌🏾
Love it
This is why it's impossible to duplicate Dilla he's the greatest period
At the start logic upgrade
ahaha ikr
had that in my mind first too
hahha yess
logic loved j dilla and the rest of slum village.
too me
Very talented. Good job!
So awesome man, keep em coming!
This is inspirational! Please keep it up, and if possible - break down the T.R.O.Y. by Pete Rock :)
damn bro!! you got a new sub from me. Dilla was one of a kind. wayy ahead of his own. You got cats in dilla inner music circle who doesn't know how the hell or what the hell he did to get that beat or that "sound". nonetheless, mad props man.
Great work!
These vids are awesome
Sick!
Totally sick!
Wow, well done!
I was smiling throughout this whole video. Do more Dilla!!! Also have a look at my channel. I love playing drums over Dilla stuff.
dammm I don't know how I got here but I'm subbing dope shit !!!!!!!#!
This is dope
happy 2 year birthday
Here in 2022
Derek Carr sure knows a lot about hip hop
Thank you so much man
could you breakdown polo jeans by earlsweatshirt. or ay of his songs. he's so underated
Polo Jeans is by Mac Miller. featuring Earl.
Flyyy- J Dilla
Instead of players this shoulda been called "Layers" cuz of what's going on here
I love this song! I’m going to have to dust it off and put the cd back in rotation! You got it tho! Bass is off a little! The bass was actually like a major element of the song!
whats some good software to start messing around with sampling?
+Kickass1234567 Ableton hands down
dope
I think you should have added White noise to the track, to emulate the lo-fi sound of the track. Good job anyways.
Kev Brown - Always
Great Breakdown, will you show how OutKast Da Art of Storytellin and J-Live Upgrade was made?
You pretty damn good bro
Nice channel!
DOPE
Logic uses the same Claire sample on The Incredible True Story. Love the channel, Sandurz. Keep it up. I use Logic Pro X and a midi keyboard...If possible I would love to see those used! Can you accomplish the same things using those as Maschine?
please start doing these again
I'm curious how he pulled off the timestretch. The MPC 3000 didn't have timestretch, what other samplers did he have at the time?
The bassline of the original doesn't have those spaces that you have in yours. The parts where you have spaces also have bass but the notes are pretty much on the left side keys of the keyboard, so unless you're listening with some decent speakers or headphones, you will miss those notes.
It's the 788!
Dilla had you on your a game, good job.
that was epic, i managed to re create it pretty good..thanks to the tutorial.
can you do 'stakes is high' - de la soul or 'thelonious' - common or 'rico suave bossa nova' - dilla, all dilla beats
Man, when are you coming back man? I just got a Machine Studio and need some help and you know what the flip you're doing.. lol Holla at me man..
Good video bro
You should do Dreamy by J.Dilla that beats dope asf , I have my own version
Does anyone know a (free) vst or something that has a good sine bass like that? I have it on my microkorg but i dont feel like whipping it out everytime just for a bassline
Just use any basic sine wave and pitch it down, add a tiny attack time to it then you've got the same sound. You can literally do it with any VST. And it doesn't need to be a sine bass, it can be literally any sine wave
Honestly if anything, the original has more low end EQ’ing on the snares but that’s mostly it
Do j dilla little brothers next plzzzz
what keyboard / bass sound are you using there? been looking for this sound for years, I will tear off my arm for it
Dilla was a genius 🔥
make a breakdown of Dilla's Trashy! he sampled Maimoun by Stanley Cowell
What’s the notes to the baseline? I wanna practice
somebody fr remade the Players beat and it sounds spot on
soundcloud.com/ignxrance/slum-village-players-instrumental-remake
mate would help if you could show the bet pattern
Could you do its your world by common prod by dilla
Do Flying Lotus - Massage Situation
bro I really need your help on the last 2 notes.. I don't know how you or dilla got them to sound like that I'm using FL 10 I have tried pitching them down but it doesn't work.
btw u snapped
