I hate when people are like all Muslims bad, all Christians bad, all so and so is bad. My closest friend in middle school was a Yemish Muslim. She was just the absolute sweetest girl ever. I miss her. She moved back to Yemen before she even graduated our high school. I hope she’s safe and she’s doing okay not gonna lie. This absolutely disgusts me. Not all Muslims are terrorists or bad people. Christians can be friends with Muslims, I know I am. I worry about her everyday still to do this day. She was an absolute Angel. She even taught me how to write my name in Arabic which was really cool. Man! I miss her so much.
💖in tennis I met my friend who was Muslim. She was kind of a quiet kid but it was fun to hang out with her. I miss her and I haven't played tennis since more than a year due to the pandemic.
I love hearing about people with different faiths being caring friends! One of my most cherished friends is Muslim, and I agree; it doesn't mean anything negative it's the same with any other religion. Some people are extremists, and some others are just people who believe in a God! I'm agnostic, so I love hearing about her faith and her prayers and learning about the Quran and different scared words like “mashallah” I suppose I don't know why people focus so much on if it was Jesus or Moses who delivered the message of God...either way wouldn't it be the same God just different ways of honouring Him? Many Christians are modest in how they dress, and so are some Muslim women and men; the golden rule is the same for both religions; the take on drinking differs for every Muslim and Christian...there are so many similarities, and I wish we could focus on that! I am proud you could do that, and I wish more people would! Also, I took a huge issue with Debi saying Muslims smell because they literally wash before their prayers.....she clearly knows nothing about the religion because a big part of it, like Christianity, is being clean when going to worship God. Christians wear their “Sunday best,” and Muslims wash before prayer. Like come on, Debi read ONE book about someone unlike yourself before you write your own 🤦🏻♀️
I feel like this whole book is a really good accidental critique about how a lot of Christians don't actually practice what they preach. They ask for other people to assist poor unfortunate souls rather than stepping in or volunteering or donating. Instead of widely distributing a cure all to others to better humanity they want to make money off it and only provide small doses to convert others instead of actually help them.
I noticed it too, if it was written by sb else I would think it's a critique of christianity. Knowing it's Pearl's book it really tells a lot about what kind of person she is and what a joke her version of christianity is.

I love it when crap like this passes the Bechdel test. It shows that passing it is the barest of minimums and so many better acclaimed books still don't even pass it. It says a lot about society.
Truth is that the Bechdel test was never supposed to be a feminist test, it was from a comic by Alison Bechdel describing the bare minimum needed for lesbians to view a media relationship between two women through a romantic lens. It was co-opted to mean something it never really was supposed to touch on.
I've been around since the Train up a Child days and the fact that she's written a self insert fiction book is the disaster gift I never knew I needed!
Not Native American Myself, but i could feel how wrong the descriptions of Shiane were. I showed the descriptions to my friend whose family is from the Cheyanne tribe and they were appalled. Also their is the slap in the face of the fetishization of conversion of Native peoples to christianity that happened for centuries and punishing them for their heritage.
I feel like another word to describe it would be "othering"? Its as if she's describing an otherworldly, strange, exotic creature, instead of someone whos like - ya know - a regular human being.
There were so many obvious clichés ("high cheekbones", olive skin, various other physical and kinetic characteristics). I think it was _meant_ to portray a positive image of this native American woman but the mixture of cringe & stereotypes seemed just plain old fashioned racist.
@@resourcedragon So true, so old fashioned racist - I mean, a lot of racists have no problem with also sexually desiring a person they deem to not be equal to them. Raping a person they fetishized before is fine according to their supremacist worldview. But they usually make a big distinction between their attraction to their victims and to their spouses.

Of all the terrible things in this book, there is just one thing that seriously made me go "Debbie Pearl is an idiot." And you know what that was? "Shaking Jam" Honey, if you are shaking jam you know nothing about jam making and DEFINITELY did it wrong.
@@teddycheong I wouldn't waste my money on such garbage. Debbie Pearl's reputation proceeds herself and justifies my lack of interest in reading any of her religion-based propaganda.
I was introduced to the Pearls as a teenager, and it took me a while to see just how horrid they were (I was in the same cult Josh Duggar was, so I had a lot to work through.) Revisiting the Pearls as a liberated adult was quite shocking. Of course Debi subscribes to the idea that men are routinely falsely accused of rape. She doesn't recognize what rape is because according to Michael's own account of their honeymoon, she's been assaulted and used from the very first. I don't know where that account is now; I read it years ago and finally saw how it clearly laid out a method for breaking a woman's spirit. Pretty much nothing from the Pearls surprises me now. They're twisted, toxic, and hateful.
I live in the UK and either their books or Dare to Discipline by James Dobson or both will be on the shelves of bible study leaders in evangelical churches. Time to leave that cell group and even better to leave the church as well. Come to think of it those bible group leaders do everything from hosting the meetings in their own home, organising them, providing refreshments and then leading or teaching them because of their martyr complex and being seen to be doing everything.
@@lemsip207 My mom was the librarian for the evangelical church I grew up in. She was secretly quite progressive and a feminist by the end: she got rid of the worst fundie books, and put some more progressive Christian authors in the library like Anne Lamott :P The last straw was when my dad was asked to be a church elder (when they knew multiple women in church leadership who would've made much better elders and actually made sense for the position). He was a man, well off, and well connected so he was asked. He said it was a boy's club. They didn't think it was a good influence on my sister and I so they left for a much better church.

Just so you know, as a native person, I felt like your reading of the descriptions is very fetishy. It feels so much like someone literally watched disney's Pocahontas and fetishized all native people from that depiction. Even before you said it felt fetishizing, I felt that way.

@@blueismylove3128 I (not of indigenous descent) tend to use indigenous peoples, indigenous tribes, or to be as specific as possible and use the proper name the tribe prefers or used in the time period I'm referencing.
@@blueismylove3128 I use native American for myself because I want people to remember who lived here first and keep the association. For others, it really depends. I use indigenous for those that want to be referred to that way or when talking about the broad spectrum of tribes. The point of the Bechdel test is that you're asking for something so minor that pretty much any book/movie/ TV show should be able to pass it easily, but so many movies struggle to do the bare minimum.
The way the characters react to "fallen women" is the only thing that rings true. In my experience, this is exactly the way too many of them feel. When a woman reports a rape, they automatically assume she's lying.
My father r*p*d me. His whole side of the family, who are LOUDLY Christian, disowned me and the preacher at my childhood church told him he was forgiven because I had "tempted" him. As a child...
And when a man is raped by a woman, he is turned away from reporting it because of the mockery and humiliation he will receive for it. Also, add onto that, the fact he will be told that his report barely matters because his case is part of a minority, societal bias and toxic standards, being even more likely of being ignored no matter the proof, and also being told his case isn't as important. It's not a gender specific thing, I want to work to get rid of this bias, we need to remove the stigma around anybody's cases and reports. Throughout this whole review, I was reminded of the parable of the Good Samaritan. Every character here, despite their whole shtick of being "good christians" don't help ANYONE. They're the people that walk by the dying man on the sign of the road, hoping that someone else will help. The fact that this "christian" woman is so tone deaf that she doesn't realize that her characters are more similar to the BAD GUYS from the Bible really says something, considering that this is her own religion.
Sorry to respond to a six month old comment, but you're right. The amount of evangelical Christians who seem like they've never read the bible is astounding. I feel the same way about prosperity gospel types.
That was my thought! And the sad fact is, I know Christians like this in real life (although admittedly the situations haven't been as extreme as some in this book) and they find it really strange when you actually try to help, like it's an alien concept that somehow didn't occur to them. It's actually bizarre, considering what the religion is supposed to preach. (And then many wonder why I've drifted away from the church 😂) Don't get me wrong, some are absolutely lovely, but the disconnect can be... quite something.
Already commented, but need to say that the way the homeless girl is treated is just like... Have y'all ever read the new testament? Do you even know what Jesus preached? Like I'm not religious at all, but I was raised in Christianity and let me tell you, I don't think these people read the same bible I did.
I gagged when you read the descriptions of Cheyenne because yes, all of that was fetishizing, and comparing her to a "cartoon Pocahontas"... just gross..
When Debi wrote "children who'd seen Pocahontas would think she looked like her in real life" (para.) I think she was describing her own rather myopic conception of an "Indian" girl.
Yes, you are so spot on: Debi Pearl has blaming the victim mindset be normal in her book because it is normal in her life. See her protecting people like Bill Gothard who used church positions to abuse minors. ETA: also the part with the racist screed about races is there because Debi Pearl thinks she herself isn't racist because she doesn't say that screed herself because to her that is the only thing that "counts" as racism
As a strong Christian woman myself I feel like its my duty to say that the author of this book does not represent Christianity at all. For me personally I hate the word "religion" or "religious" because it's so cold. For me I consider myself in a relationship with Christ. That's what He wants. True Christianity is based on love, sadly a lot of christians do not represent this at all. I'm an art teacher and I do my best to teach respect to people of all backgrounds, race, sexual orientation, and religious beliefs. Because that is what Christ calls us to do. Love Him and LOVE others. It breaks my heart to see people write books like this or act aggressively against others in the name of God. It's awful and not a good representation and I want to apologize to you on their behalf.
There is a strange phenomenon in the US of conservative Christians fetishizing Native American ppls/heritage. Its made more bizarre by the lack of concern or compassion for actual Tribes and their fight for rights against the US gov, i.e. DAPL. But they love to claim that their great grandmother was a "Cherokee Princess" or some other such nonsense. My great grandmother told my grandfather and his siblings not to tell anyone they were "half indian" because they'd be discriminated against. The reality of native heritage is much less glamorous than looking like Pocahontas. 😒 Not to mention the genocide against Native ppls, culture, language perpetrated by European Christians. It's so gross.
It's ethnonationalism, they want to claim they've got a divine-bloodline-birthright-bullshit to the land they're on. They do the same thing in Europe, but in the Americas they know they can't make the same claims...unless they're secretly native. They don't want to actually BE native, and they certainly don't want to be mixed, that would hit them with the racism they themselves created--but they want to prove to themselves (and anyone who might question their colonialism) that they deserve to be here because it's in their blood. I've seen some of them shift towards "we're secretly vikings because the vikings were actually here first" and it's also at the root of the mormon belief of being one of the tribes of israel that was "secretly here first" too.
Christians do believe they're God's special favourite people so Christians having some bizarre affinity with, or even falsely claiming heritage from "exotic" cultures isn't really that surprising.
My family claimed First Nation heritage (Cherokee of course) because it was “too shameful” to tell the truth of our **actual** heritage of having black ancestors. Literally my grandmother called my mother and said “I just learned something shocking and I think you should sit down before I tell you!” And my mom was like “ok…” “We have (whispered) **black people** in our family!” To my mom’s credit, she busted out laughing and said “have you even seen your 2nd child? Of course we have African ancestors!” and then hung up on her. TL;DR: if my family is any indication, the whole “Cherokee princess” malarkey is meant to be the racist explanation for why there are “ethnic” appearing family members in otherwise pastel milquetoast family trees.
i know this is a small point but "they lack cleanliness compared to the local thai people" (not the exact quote but the idea) like don't muslim people clean themselves before prayer 5 times a day?
Yup, though it is usually a ceremonial foot, hand and face wash. You wouldn't normally do a total preprayer clean unless it was Friday prayers. Obviously everyone's different though! I'm sure some people do a full shower before prayers.
Also, so much of this is ironic. She makes the "girl" out to be awful for being racist, but the entire story is based on racism??? She comments about muslims being "colonizers" in her footnotes but she's a christian??? There's a complete lack of self awareness here that makes everything even more bizarre and disgusting.
Watching this review made realize why people like her have been made to strongly look down upon therapy and matters of mental health. After all you can't realize how toxic your situation is and remove yourself from it if you never learn, amiright?
37:29 This is exactly why we need to call native people native. Calling them Indian is confusing! Like, the racism is bad enough, but it's genuinely confusing when you hear "Indian" and think "Oh, from India" and apparently nope, just being racist against native people. The whole "pray that god helps that person but not doing anything to help" reminds me of a joke people say in my country a lot, since the majority is catholic, as a way to criticize this type of behavior because its just so common. And they can just feel good even if they dont do anything because "they are praying and that is enough". Its quite sad really.
This video made me realize that, to someone who believes things like angels are real and among us, that to them, praying IS helping people. They're so disconnected from reality that they think praying for supernatural intervention from a being which, mind you, they've never actually seen, directly interacted with or otherwise proven to exist, is equivalent to or even better than actually helping someone themselves. I actually hope it's just hypocrisy, that they pray because they want to believe that they help people while doing it in the most low-effort way possible, because the alternative is that they're off the deep end. I don't know where the point where religious belief becomes indistinguishable from mental illness is but this is way over the line. Even if we look past the all the hateful stuff and just focus on the simple metaphysical outlook of this on reality, it's genuinely concerning that someone walks around believing that and if it wasn't a millennia-old religion people wouldn't hesitate to call it crazy.
My favorite thought process in the whole book so far is that she is terrified of Muslims coming in, spreading their faith, and reproducing, but she wants to make loads of money so that she can print Bibles in all of the languages so that Christianity can be the one true religion and everyone is Christian.
40:41 So, you're telling me that these people are capable of making something that you'll only have to eat once to be completely cured, but they are purposefully making a worse version that requires being taken every day in order to work, not because it would be too expensive to make the full version, but specifically because they'll get more money that way? And the money will be used on making bibles, not charities or advancing this medical science, just making more bibles in different languages for the sole sake of conversion??? And we're supposed to see these people as the good guys!? If these people are supposed to be christians, why don't they do what Jesus do and cure people for free (although I think it would be acceptable for them to sell the jam for some money, in order to cover the costs of making and transporting it, as well as their own expenses), and then use their position as these literal miracle makers to promote their religion? At least in that case, their actions would be more in line with what their bible preaches, and regardless of whether you agree with their religion, you would have to admit that they had done a lot of good to the world.
It’s so creepy to me that Debi censored “shit” in “ $%!@ dog, you bled all over me!” after an indulgent gore-filled passage Like... some light swearing is so awful it can’t be printed, but graphic depictions of violence against animals are okay?! What?!
So weirdly enough I met the Pearls. I was coming back from Mexico to Atlanta (long story) and hitched a ride with their son in law, back to Tennessee. What brought back this memory was crossing the border in to Tennessee, the truck broke down and the Pearls daughter came and gave us a towback to their house. On the way their she picked up some teen Hitchhikers. She and her husband rode in the pickup and me and the hitchhikes rode I the broken down vehicule being towed. She must have considered picking up hitchhikers as a ministry opportunity. Because before we set off from where the vehicule broke down, she put in a sermon in the sterio for us to listen to on the drive back to their place. (I guess the words of the sermon were just suppose to convict and lead the hitchhikers to the gospel) I still considered myself a Christian at that point but was believing less and less. And the hitchhikers (in their early 20's) were really cool and had rockin stories, so I turned down the sermon, and we just chatted while being towed. (Also don't chill in vehicule being towed. It can be pretty dangerous) The part of the story where Dave prints out tracks "into all five Arabic dialects" and leaves them all over the place, I could see the Pearls doing something like this, and thinking that it was a awesome outreach.
im wondering, how long ago did you have this encounter? just because now hitchhiking (and even picking up hitchhikers) is highly discouraged. i know i (23) would be terrified. but i do consume a lot of true crime media, so i’ve heard countless stories about teenagers and young people hitchhiking and ending up in some…bad situations, let’s say.

Same! Like the novel I'm working on needs a LOT of editing, but listening to this, there are such HUGE things that need editing in this one (even just stylistically--the racism and Islamophbia make it beyond editing and instead only worthy for a shredder) that I feel rather encouraged! Like, what is even the point of that first chapter before Asher's move? Start the book with him arriving in the new town, someone says how good it is he's there to pick up Dan's work, done. I have to wonder how many books Debi's even read. Knowing how people in their circles feel about reading fiction in particular, I imagine it's not very many, or not widely.

Writings like this book are not offensive to me-- they are existentially terrifying. The intent to do harm is evident and palpable and this book is not alone in promoting that kind of hate. But 'hate' isn't enough of a word for what this *does* to people, for how this kills people, erases cultures, replaces *our* selves with hollow vessels that our narcissistic rulers fill up with *them* selves. The author doesn't 'need to stop'. People like this do not stop themselves, they go on to support death camps.
Boomers who continue to unironically call Native Americans "Indians" is something that makes my blood boil. And absolutely everything she wrote about that character is fetishization. I doubt she's spoken to one native american woman in her life.

Yeah, Rachel. Its really offensive to call Native/first nations people 'Indian'. It's also really old fashioned, like how the N-bomb used to be 'not a big deal'.
Damn, that's frustrating then. And it's totally reminded me of part I didn't include where Derek calls Hope and Cheyenne the s-word which I'm almost certain is a slur for Native American people?
@@RachelOates Which s-word? There's Sioux which is a word for a nation iirc (though I don't know if it's outdated or still in use or what) and sq*aw which is a really derogatory term for Native American women
Thank you for not reading out the passages about the dog's death. Gratuitous violence against animals really upsets me. When you reviewed "To Train a Child" I got the strong impression that the Pearls are both sadists. This book just confirms that (and adds in some additional really disturbing elements - as if "To Train a Child" wasn't disturbing enough).
"Is Debi aware of how hypocritical she is" is the wrong question. "Me = Good, Everything Else = Bad" is the sum total of the belief system. There's no inconsistency, hypocrisy, debate, room for interpretation; there's no reasoning beyond "I AM RIGHT AND WHAT I WANT IS RIGHT." Narcissism's final form.
I'd say the most dangerous hypocrisy is always believing you're right and never capable of evil or harm. It always boils down to someone ignoring the damage they cause because they don't care. This type of hypocrites will always deflect any honest conversation about beliefs to validate themselves.

This book is full of a bunch of offensive trash, but the way Debi fetishizes Indigenous women makes me (a good amount of my mom's side of the family are/were Seneca) feel profoundly uncomfortable. On top of making the super fetishized woman a servant of a very militant version of a colonizer religion that was used as a tool of cultural erasure and HOLY CRAP I FEEL UNCLEAN.

I’m sorry, I can’t take Debi seriously when she wants her characters to curse but they say, “D# you”, “What the heck” or “Blankey blankey dog!” It’s ok if you don’t want to swear yourself; but if you are going to have the character curse, have them say the actual swear word or say something like ‘Derek cursed under his breath.’ or something like that.
As a Christian writer, I'm not comfortable with characters saying stuff like 'Oh my God' or 'Damn' (that one's worse here than in English-speaking countries), so I work around it. Swearing without cursing is a great way for me to come up with something creative, writing something like heck or blank or using #$&%* just feels incredibly lazy

Not all Muslims are terrorists or bad people. Christians can be friends with Muslims, I know I am. I worry about her everyday still to do this day. She was an absolute Angel.
Which is PRECISELY the kind of thing that Jesus doesn't like at all!

Self-identifying racist and Nazis point to those same stories and hand-picked statistics about Islamic terrorism to justify how they’re “out of control”. I’m baffled yet curious about where Debi draws the line for “white supremacy” that she claims she’s supposedly against 🤔
Throughout this whole review, I was reminded of the parable of the Good Samaritan.
Literally my grandmother called my mother and said “I just learned something shocking and I think you should sit down before I tell you!”
And my mom was like “ok…”
“We have (whispered) **black people** in our family!”
To my mom’s credit, she busted out laughing and said “have you even seen your 2nd child? Of course we have African ancestors!” and then hung up on her.
TL;DR: if my family is any indication, the whole “Cherokee princess” malarkey is meant to be the racist explanation for why there are “ethnic” appearing family members in otherwise pastel milquetoast family trees.
i know this is a small point but "they lack cleanliness compared to the local thai people" (not the exact quote but the idea) like don't muslim people clean themselves before prayer 5 times a day?

She comments about muslims being "colonizers" in her footnotes but she's a christian??? There's a complete lack of self awareness here that makes everything even more bizarre and disgusting.
They would need to make a whole new watch list just for her.
This woman doesn’t need an FBI agent watching her, she needs the whole damn agency

Is she aware that the Bible is basically PART OF THE QURAN? As far as I understand from my conversations with a Muslim flatmate, they consider it a sort of preface to their holy book which is supposed to be an "update" ... So there was no need for Dan to translate anything for them -_-
Not a PART of the Quran, but you're right, it is more of a predecessor! It's a part of our religion!
I'm not religious but I have studied multiple religious texts and the Quran mentions Jesus and other characters of the Christian Bible in it. Islam, Christianity, and Judaism all worship the exact same God.

Right? Sometimes they even walk without bothering anybody. Like, what's their problem?
@@mariammosashvili4150 Don't get me started about those.
Oh boy, "thoughts & prayers" like they actually help...
It's cuz "My religion is the One True Religion, all others are Bad"

A bad book review? And it's the Pearls?! Can't wait!
The resurrected dog is the most likeable character.
It’s so creepy to me that Debi censored “shit” in “ $%!@ dog, you bled all over me!” after an indulgent gore-filled passage
Like... some light swearing is so awful it can’t be printed, but graphic depictions of violence against animals are okay?!
(I guess the words of the sermon were just suppose to convict and lead the hitchhikers to the gospel)
I still considered myself a Christian at that point but was believing less and less. And the hitchhikers (in their early 20's) were really cool and had rockin stories, so I turned down the sermon, and we just chatted while being towed. (Also don't chill in vehicule being towed. It can be pretty dangerous)
The part of the story where Dave prints out tracks "into all five Arabic dialects" and leaves them all over the place, I could see the Pearls doing something like this, and thinking that it was a awesome outreach.
im wondering, how long ago did you have this encounter? just because now hitchhiking (and even picking up hitchhikers) is highly discouraged. i know i (23) would be terrified. but i do consume a lot of true crime media, so i’ve heard countless stories about teenagers and young people hitchhiking and ending up in some…bad situations, let’s say.

Same! Like the novel I'm working on needs a LOT of editing, but listening to this, there are such HUGE things that need editing in this one (even just stylistically--the racism and Islamophbia make it beyond editing and instead only worthy for a shredder) that I feel rather encouraged! I realised many years ago that I seem to have a natural talent for poetry, or at least used to, it's a bit of a weird story but long story short I found myself in prison around 2003ish and realised I was really good at poems, I even managed to earn myself tobacco and stuff by writing them for other people's loved ones, the sad part is that due to my mental health issues all of the medications I've had to take over the decades has destroyed my memory, not to mention my motivation and self respect so I've sadly lost it gradually over the years, but I think I'll still check out the website, maybe I can regain a bit of something from the experience 🙃

Also, a bit of context about the Native American heritage thing, it's not uncommon for racist white americans to claim that they have some native american blood of some kind. As a way of saying 'I know what they're going through, I'm ALSO part of that culture' and claiming it as part of some exoticism while still being safely white in the same vein as yellow fever. It's VERY unlikely that woman the character is based on has Native American heritage and is just claiming it because she is fetishizing it.
edit- spelling
Writings like this book are not offensive to me-- they are existentially terrifying. The intent to do harm is evident and palpable and this book is not alone in promoting that kind of hate. But 'hate' isn't enough of a word for what this *does* to people, for how this kills people, erases cultures, replaces *our* selves with hollow vessels that our narcissistic rulers fill up with *them* selves. The author doesn't 'need to stop'. People like this do not stop themselves, they go on to support death camps.
"Offensive to almost every person you can think of." Haha, awesome sound bite. I imagine it gracing the back cover of the book itself.
Boomers who continue to unironically call Native Americans "Indians" is something that makes my blood boil. And absolutely everything she wrote about that character is fetishization. I doubt she's spoken to one native american woman in her life.
