Mary has taken James under her protective motherly wing just as she does with all the rest of the pack. She is a born maternal protector. She is forever feeding the whole lot of them it seems. How much toast do they get through in that house. Who did she trust and turn to when Erin was feeling so rejected on prom night. When James admired her hat at the wedding, she responded with a smile "Thanks son". She adores him. She has no time for his mother who is everything Mary is not. A self obsessed woman who has rejected and abandoned her only child. No wonder that spatula was being held like a weapon over her LOL.
Mary is really protective of them, she washes their school uniform and takes them on holiday and lets them all stay up and study together

Everyone's talking about Ma Mary being protective of James when Cathy waltzes in but the subtle shade Aunt Sarah's throwing her way is priceless.
No doubt and she gives credit where its due, but follows back up about sticker making.

Love James' reaction to the dead body. That sums up so much the difference between the English and northern Irish. We don't ever see dead bodies at English funerals, thank God.

The highlight of Series 2 was definitely James turning up at Erin's door to take her to prom after her date ditches her. The way that she takes his arm is so sweet, and there's the adorable smiles they give each other. If i was a lowkey Jerin shipper before, than I have an absolute supporter of them now!

I really hate that moment. The emotion is so forced and out of place and it’s trying to make me cry while also laugh. The show can’t have its cake and eat it to. Series two was fucking shite in my opinion and some of the worst tv ever made.

James rescuing Erin was simply too adorable for words. Him telling her that convention wasn't important and then doing a cute double take when she comes down the stairs. That scene was just so sweet, especially since he turned down Clare for the convention but then tell Erin when he picks her up that it's not important. He is too cute.
Yes to all of this! I can’t wait to see more wee hints of them next series, assuming they go that direction (which I’m almost certain they will). I love a good slow burn and I trust Lisa’s writing to pull it off with heart & hilarity.

Him turning down Clare days before Prom was okay since she still can find a date by that time, but him showing up for Erin was actually so sweet of him.

Besides the amazing story and acting, I absolutely love how these characters seem so real and relatable. They don't look fake as hell like those American teenage dramas. This is something I also liked about Lovesick (scrotal recall)

In "Cruel Intentions" the actors were playing high schoolers while Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon were 23 or thereabouts and Selma Blair, whose character was the most immature, was actually 27.
I actually love that cause I don't want to see teenagers doing stuff on tv. It makes me feel weird so this is such a nice thing. Plus having kids in tv really fucks them up
Shame this doesn't include James picking up Erin for the prom that was my favourite moment from series 2.

I get why they are holding back the best moment of series 2, James showing up to take Erin to the prom just as she is walking up the stairs to get out of her dress feeling so low. It was wonderful and so touching, especially as the very reason he was not going to the prom with the others was he had his Dr. Who convention on the same night, which he loved. When Erin says to him ... what about your convention the way he just smiles at her so warmly and says it doesn't matter. THUD !!! I also love how it was Ma Mary who called James, she knew he would never let Erin down.
Agreed, James is accepted more in Derry than he is in England. He gets on far better with Mary than he does with his own mother, Cathy, who is self absorbed and neglects him most of the time. The Quinns, by contrast treat him like one of the family, best evidenced when James is the only one to compliment Mary's much mocked hat during the wedding episode. Mary seems to think of James as the son she never had, and seems to be protective over him when he brings Cathy over.

Gerry (from the Republic) and James (from England) provide external commentary - they speak for the rest of Ireland & the UK about life in '90s Northern Ireland.
I love everything about this show. It’s way more true to life than most shows here in the states.

Mad 😐In my culture we have body viewing once during the funeral. But we don’t have the body lying in state in a house and people walking in. But different cultures different norms. Crazy from my perspective

At my granda’s wake there was a bunch of people touching his face and hands. on the third day of the wake the coffin was closed but yeah you sorta line up to see the coffin then go into another room, sit, cry/chat, drink tea

Completely normal. Drinks, tea and food in the kitchen and people usually wandering in and out to the room (usually the sitting room) to say goodbye to the person. If you didn’t go into the room with the coffin, you’d probably mistake it for a normal get together to be honest... I’ve been attending wakes since I was a little girl, only considered it was weird when my German friend pointed it out a few years ago.
