      There was a drift mine in that location i.e. a horizontal, more or less, tunnel driven into the coal seam. I thought the area had been opencast by a company who took over the mine from the one man band underground miner. They left a right mess according to a local man who lived just down the lane so maybe this "hole" is a left over from their opencast mining. I am surprised local people are involved in this work, I understood that the NCB or whatever government office took over their operations, were responsible for remediation works such as collapsed or subsiding old coal mine workings and filling in mine shafts.
