After telling my family I no longer believed in a God, they said I would go to hell! I was very hurt by that at the time but now I find it funny because if I don't believe in a God I certainly don't believe in a hell either! And after all these years as a non-believer I just feel bad for my Christian family members & friends. I don't view them as very intelligent anymore either because why in the world wouldn't they research their own faith? I did, & that's why I no longer believe in a God.
@Quiver I agree... But we don't have to be Christians, Muslims, etc. to be good. We're usually born with human emotions that keep us good. The exceptions are bad whether religious or not.

I love this guy's honesty. I started breaking away from Christianity when I was in my teen years. And I was accused of wanting to sin. My answer was "I was already sinning as a Christian". I married young, had my children young. While in my 20s and 30s I watched all my Christian friends and family drink alcohol excessively dabble in non meritable sex and drugs. While I'm over here not drinking, taking drugs or any of the other supposed sinful things people around me were doing. Not one of them got the irony. I've also noticed whenever someone is being accused of a crime or wrong doing they say" I'm a good Christian" I would never do that. Like saying the word Christian exonerates them from wrongdoing. The hypocrisy kills me.
I suppose there is a certain naïve charm in a dreaming machine supposing it could have any sort of understanding of *any* of Christianity, which died out as a living tradition(a tradition *not* found in any books).
"Good Christian" is code for "mindlessly submitting to authority figure". You can commit virtually any crime and still be a 'good' Christian, but the moment you abandon the faith then suddenly your soul is beyond saving.

The parts of our brain like sympathy, empathy, logic, etc would work together to form these moral standards. Edit: it's funny how the rebels like being told they did it all in their own. They forget that sympathy, empathy, and logic were created in you by the Creator. It was part of the design. I love atheists... They remind my of that FOMO.

The 'you left the faith because you love sin' argument reassures believers that they're separate from, and better than, the apostate, because it implies that one must leave the faith if one loves sin (which is clearly preposterous). It lets them believe Christianity somehow shields them from sin, making it easier for them to justify their own misdeeds, or see them as a one-off.
yes it can, but i think that it also demonstrates a lack of understanding of WHY a person will fail to believe in God. It fails to account that people can be moral and also reasonably believe that no deities exists. Also, from what I understand, Christians believe in forgiveness through God, though different denominations have differing views on this. So, forgiveness for one's sins can only be achieved through worship of God, and this, depending on the interpretation, of course can also have the potential to be abused by those who want to commit immoral acts

I left Christianity and Catholicism because I researched it's history, when I questioned certain events I was told blindly follow the church and not question it
@Christine Cyrus The church is THE mystical body of christ and THE CHURCH (catholic church) was instituted by christ himself. The church is intrusted (by christ) to evangelize the entire world. Because only the church by the guidance of the Holy spirit can teach the fullness of christ's teachings.

Christ said call no one father, for you have one Father in heaven, and you are all brothers and sisters. Christ sacrifice got rid of the whole priest system. That's the reason the veil ripped at his crucifixion. God was doing away with the high priest and priest system. All are free to go directly to God without any intermediators. Christ is now our high priest and intermediator. There shouldn't be any priests, bishops, or popes. So the Catholic Church and all Christian denominations are obsolete. Actually they've been obsolete for over 2,000 years now. It's just Christian churches are either too hard headed, too greedy, or too ignorant of the Bible to recognize this. If your definition of mystical body is a spiritual Church across all nations without clergy, then yes I agree that Jesus did intend 1 Catholic (Universal) Church under God.

@@yamilmendez4842 I know what I say is hard for many Christians to accept, because it is so different from everything you had been taught. Therefore, I will try to back some of my reasoning with scripture. However this is an extremely complex concept that's taken me years of Biblical study to uncover. Exodus 19:6 "you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.'" From this verse we see that from early on God has been intending for his people to become a nation of priests. The only intermediator between the priests and God is the high priest. So you see the ancient traditional religious system was foreshadowing God's plan for a future spiritual system. Thus with Jesus's sacrifice he became our high priest. This is why in Revelation 1 Jesus is described wearing a long robe with a golden sash, and he is tending the lampstands. This is the attire of the high priest. It was the high priest duty to tend to the lamp stand (Numbers 8.1). So Revelation is saying Jesus is now the high priest. Revelation 5.9 And they sang a new song: “Worthy are You to take the scroll and open its seals, because You were slain, and by Your blood You purchased for God those from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign upon the earth. Note that in this verse Jesus has purchased his people through his sacrifice and made them into priests. Also note that it says they will reign on the earth. So what Revelation is stating is that NOW all of his people are priests. Jesus had hinted about this spiritual Church when he spoke with the woman at the well. John 4.19 “Sir, the woman said, “I see that You are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place where one must worship is in Jerusalem. “Believe Me, woman, Jesus replied, “a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. But a time is coming and has now come when the True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him. God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth. From this passage we see that Jesus is saying there will come a time when all will worship the Father in Spirit. Notice that Jesus says "a time is coming and has now come" Jesus sometimes does this when he is hinting at future prophecy. When he says the "time now come" he meant right after his crucifixion the Church would become spiritual. This is why in Revelation 21.2 the New Jerusalem comes down after the Old Jerusalem was destroyed. The Old Jerusalem was the harlot on the beast. It was the old traditional religious system. It was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. So Christ universal spiritual Church is symbolically represented by the New Jerusalem coming out of heaven. Thus, the spiritual Church has already arrived. It arrived some 2,000 years ago. The whole old religious system is obsolete. Its been spiritually fulfilled in Christ. Yet note that Jesus told the woman at the well "a time is coming" this is future. So Jesus was aware that even though the spiritual Church would be officially established right after his sacrifice, he perceived that corruption would infiltrate his spiritual Church. If you carefully read many of his parables, you will see he is hinting that the Church will be corrupted. For example the birds make their home in the mustard tree. The weeds are later discovered mixed with the wheat. This is Jesus way of hinting that his spiritual Church would be taken over by a corrupt Church system. This is why in Revelation the harlot of Babylon has similarities between Jerusalem and Rome. Both are corrupt. Both are religious cities. Its a dual prophecy. Jerusalem was the old earthly Church and it was destroyed in 70 AD. Rome is the new earthly Church and prophecy suggest it will be destroyed. After this, Christ true spiritual Church will arise, as it should had been ever since his sacrifice. Something many Christians struggle understanding is Christ new covenant. To be able to participate in this new spiritual Church we must be given the freedom to choose. This is why the Bible is saying we are priests. We have authority to make decisions. We are no longer under the Old Mosaic law (Torah). However we also aren't bound by the Bible as many Christians think. That wouldn't make sense. Why would Christ free us from one primitive law only to chain us to a new primitive law? The Apostle Paul struggled with these ideas. He was inspired by God, but sometimes he mixed up the Old Covenant with Christ Covenant. This is one of the reasons why Christians get so mixed up. They don't realize the new covenant means we have complete freedom to follow our heart regardless what scripture says. One of the reasons Christ came was to be an example of how we are to act in his new covenant. Notice that Christ followed his heart first in all his decision making. This is why he often answered peoples questions with parables. He was trying to get people to quit being reliant on the scripture for all their decisions. He knew scripture couldn't solve everyone's problems. He knew if everyone followed their heart they would be following the Holy Spirit which lives within the heart. However Christ was in a unique situation. He had to literally abide by Torah while also abiding by grace. In his genius, he managed to handle this tight rope between justice and mercy. Whereas, we are free to completely follow grace. If you carefully read the Apostle Paul's words and don't get sucked into some of his culture's biases and legalism you will perceive that all we have to do is follow Christ Spirit within us. Or as Jesus said... Matthew 22.34 And when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they themselves gathered together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question: “Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law? Jesus declared, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. From this passage we can see that to Jesus by following love we are being obedient to all scripture. Thus the heart is superior to the Bible. We are no longer under any type of law. The only law we are under is Christ law of love. The Bible has been trying to tell people this from the beginning. Quit worshiping scripture, and worship God. Or as Paul would likely say you people need to spiritually grow up, and be responsible. You need to quit trying to hide behind the law (the Bible). These ideas are revolutionary. Without you realizing it, you are on the borderline of a spiritual revolution. Over time more and more of these ideas will be transmitted throughout the world. People will gradually wake up, and the old traditional Church which is dying will die. Jesus's prophecies are being and will be fulfilled. The Spiritual Church is being born.
@Christine Cyrus I can understand your frustration with the Catholic Church as I have been frustrated by what they did to Christ Spiritual Church. Yet the harlot of Babylon is not just the Catholic Church, but it also includes all the Christian churches which have arisen from her. This is why she is labelled as a mother. The harlot symbolically represents the whole Christian Church. However there is a danger here of judging all of the Christian Church or Catholic church as being complete evil. Christ Spiritual Church is still here it's just its tangled up in all the corruption of the Church of the earth. It's like Christ planted a vine (true Church), but the devil planted thorns (false Church) around the vine. As the vine grew the thorns grew up around it. So even as corrupt the Catholic church and other denominations of Christianity may be, there is a living spiritual vine within them all. This is why Jesus told the parable of the weeds and wheat. In the parable the servants of the owner wanted to uproot the weeds, but the owner told them no. Because if while uprooting the weeds they may mistakenly uproot the wheat too. Revelation 18.4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say: "'Come out of her, my people,' so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; In this verse the angel is warning God's people to flee from the harlot. This signals that regardless how mislead and deceived many of these churches are, God still has people throughout the Christian denominations and Catholic church whom he claims as his own. I just wanted to clarify that cuz you mentioned the Catholic church doesn't have the Holy Spirit. It does have the Holy Spirit however the Holy Spirit is being suffocated by thorny falsehoods. As the truth is released the Church of the earth will be revealed to be false, and Christ true Spiritual Church will thrive.

The one unifying thing I have discovered about the vast majority of modern religious people is a general lack of understanding about their own religions belief systems, the actual contents of their holy books, and the origin and historical development of their religion.

My family (close and extended) have never once actually read any version of the bible in its entirety, and whose understanding of their belief system boils down to, "go to this building every Sunday, do what the guy at the podium tells you to do, and believe what he tells you to believe."

I agree. Admittedly this is just one person, but the most devout Christian I know knows less of/about the bible than I do, and I have never read it. I only know what I have learned from movies, TV shows, podcasts, etc. that reference or parody it.
My best friend of 30 years grew up a JW. When he was a young man he was called to the alter and publicly “ rebuked “ in front of the congregation for his sinful behavior. He was caught at a movie with a girl. When the pastor asked him if he had anything to say. He put his fingers to his head. Mimicking horns and hissed loudly! Lol. True story. Need less to say... that was his last day as a JW.

@@jacelo Since you know nothing about me, I'll give you a pass. I spent the vast majority of my life in the service of the church, with over a decade as a Deacon. I taught bible studies, led more prayer meetings than I can count, preformed musically on quite a few occasions, and, among other things, have read the bible cover to cover 4 full times. Note that I don't mean a verse or chapter here and there, I mean literally cover to cover from Genesis 1:1 to Revelations 22:21. Ok, I didn't read the concordance in the back, but you know what I mean. I DO know what it means to follow Jesus, more than most, I'd say. The fourth readthrough of the scripture though, that one is about half of the reason I walked away from the church. I read it slowly, and carefully, and actually thought about what I read. I was horrified, and if you value your faith, I recommend you just let your preacher tell you what to read. That horror, and the immense amount of hypocrisy I encountered in not only my own church but others I visited did the trick. Once my eyes were opened, I saw how cruel most 'christians' actually are. How little they actually care, even though they 'made the gestures'. How nasty they were about those they 'helped' once the heathens were out of sight. I've seen the scandalous behavior, and the cover-up, and to my regret, took part in more than one such cover-up, even though I felt horrible for the person that was so badly wronged. Such was my 'duty to the church' as a Deacon, an authority figure, a role model. My cowardice in these matters, to not go to the people that were wronged and tell them what I knew still bothers me a lot, all these years later. To be fair, there were a few that actually did live and practice what they preached, but that was an extremely small percentage. So, yeah. I have some idea what it truly means to follow Jesus.

Something that's been on my mind, tangentially related to this - the Greek word translated as _sin_ is hamartia, which, to the original audience, would've meant one of two things: in the literal sense it's an archery term, missing a target, so _a mistake._ In the abstract, in literary analysis it was a term used to refer to a dramatic flaw, a character trait that leads to a great man's inevitable self-destruction, one of the defining tropes of classic tragedy. Either way there's no implicit moral judgment to it. Everyone makes mistakes, and a character's dramatic flaw could easily be what would have made them the hero in a different story.
You hit the nail on the head. That's another one of the toxic beliefs of Christianity that breaks people so badly... The idea that making a mistake is a sin, that you fell short of perfection and must now be punished for all eternity. No second chances, no learning, just hellfire.

Very suspicious when someone accuses you of being motivated by a desire to sin. It strongly suggests projection: that the accuser himself has this motivation and desires to sin. It's easy to imagine for instance that someone strongly sexually repressed by religion would be very motivated to experience sexual release, sinning in his view.
Let me first state that I am a Christian myself. A Christian should clarify that we believe that ALL people have a desire to sin, whether they believe in the Bible or not. So many of my fellow Christians seem to be content with just restating platitudes to people that disagree with them and then write them off as someone whose ideas are not worth considering, as opposed to taking the time to have a discussion with someone who believes differently than oneself and having a conversation. To be clear, I am not condemning a brother in Christ for suggesting that there are some people that would be reluctant to believe in God because they don't want someone judging them for doing things the Bible considers sinful. I think you and I could agree that there are probably people who exist with that mindset. However, if that person just stops there in their rebuttal, then that is far too simplistic. No one could ever know for sure someone's true motivation for believing or not believing in God. Assuming that you do know such a thing is, to me, arrogant and foolish whether you are a Christian or an atheist. I don't think that all atheistic ideas are ridiculous or that atheists are purely driven by nefarious motivations. Nor do I think that Christians are always driven by pure motivations. I find a lack of willingness among my fellow Christians to truly engage openly and sincerely with someone with whom they disagree.

I got the feeling that Job's friends were just trying to make themselves feel better by trying to force the world to make sense, when sometimes it clearly doesn't, at least to our finite human minds. I wonder what would happen if more of us were willing to be honest about our own doubts, insecurities, and weaknesses. I wonder if the gap between us and those who do not call themselves Christians wouldn't be so wide.
what really confuses me is the complete lack of logic. christianity has a built in system for sinning and then getting away with it. why would you ever need to leave the system to indulge in vice?

My little brother even claimed I "just want to sin". It is the dumbest argument ever. It is illogical. Besides, I don't even "sin" anyway. I am a loyal husband, I try to help people, I don't drink, don't smoke, don't do drugs, I am a homebody who pretty much likes to ride my bikes as much as possible. I sure would like to know what all these sins I want to commit are.

I am a devout Roman Catholic, and I agree with you on this. It is so plain to see in the Church that the hierarchy and authoritative positions are being abused by corrupt people who are not focused on using their position to bring the Church closer to God. Look at what most “anti-theists” will use to try to disprove religion, what they bring up is valid, but it just shows the fallibility of humans and puts even more emphasis on Paul’s quote on the ‘wolves’ that come to twist the truth.
When the world serves a whatever god and not the true God the creator then that's exactly what you get, suffering, starvation and hatred. However the truth is preached through the word of God no matter who twists what. It is available to whoever searches it. Christians tell me all the time that I call myself an atheist because I am angry at god. Not sure what they think god did to piss me off, but to me, that's like being angry at the tooth fairy. Actually, I have more anecdotal evidence that supports the existence of the tooth fairy. God never left a quarter under my pillow.
Also, if God WAS real, then I would have many, MANY reasons to be angry at him. 2,821,364 reasons, for a start. That's just the people God has killed. On top of that, he advocates for restrictive societal rules, punishes people for eternity over finite, mortal acts, and punishes people who disbelieve in him because they weren't given sufficient evidence despite the fact that he could, at any time, convince everyone on the planet, simultaneously, of his existence with no effort (he IS omnipotent and omniscient after all). And these are just the things that come off the top of my head. The god of the bible is a jealous destroyer who, despite being beyond our comprehension, still seems to be beholden to very human motives with very human end goals (destroying/forcefully absorbing all competing groups into his own in order to propagate and spread his bloodline and way of life). Does this sound like a moral arbiter and a role model, especially for today's society? To me, it sounds like a rallying figure for a warlike society whose first and only concern is to prolong the survival of their genetic makeup and prolong the survival of the group. I cannot, and will not, force anyone to change their viewpoint on this topic. If believing in a God and afterlife helps you be at peace, then so be it. That is your decision, and your decision alone, to make. But to use this God as a reason to oppress groups solely on the predication that some prophet or some ancient society thousands of years ago stated that those groups should be oppressed is not only wrong, it is deplorable.

Second, the bible does mention something about the devil taking over for 7 years, then after that, god gives you a chance to go to heaven(not sure if its true) So not believing in him you will give a punishment, but not forever. I got this thrown at me a lot when I left my old life as a jehovah's witness. When I explained my new understanding in evolution, they just stared at me and asked if that was the real reason, or if I just wanted to celebrate holidays. My own mother asked me, after respectfully explaining to her, if I had sinned and been unfaithful toward my husband. That baffled me. Its like the possibility of some one actually NOT believing in the bible is impossible. Ex jehovah witness here too, I got a double whammy coming out as gay aswell, so glad I got out before I hit 20s, a mate left in his 40s and was an absolute mess, it's not easy when your older as all of your support is gone and it's harder to gain new friends and support in older age as they say. “You just want to sin.” This statement honestly reminds me of the mission trip I went on for school. Our professor told us, “Remember: You are the first- and probably only- Bible that people may read. Don’t just speak the word, DO it.” The reason I consider that mission trip successful is mainly because we listened to the stories that people had to tell us. Many times, they were more willing to engage in a biblical discussion with us- not as a debate, but as calmly as we were discussing the weather. That shows a large amount of the problem, though: A lot of Christians don’t listen. They don’t try to understand or even sound welcoming at all to others. They do what Proverbs 18:13 warns against and give answers without hearing. There’s just this huge superiority complex over non-believers and even other Christians, the exact opposite of what God wants. It’s like they forget or don’t care about the fact that we are still sinners ourselves. I can say for certain that if these same people were where I had gone to about my doubts instead of my uncle (who is a pastoral counselor) and my professors (all psychologists), I most likely wouldn’t still be a Christian today myself. Overall, to tell someone leaving the church that they just want to sin is ridiculous to me, not to mention a phrase that hardens hearts. Why is that person leaving? Why does your child not want to go to church? Ask them, listen, and understand. And even if you don’t understand, work and try to find an answer together.
In my christian days (and later too by people trying to get me to come back) I was told that the greatest trick the devil played was to convince the world that he doesn't exist. I disagree. If christianity were true then his greatest trick was convincing christians (specially those in leadership positions) to give into their arrogance and treat it as divinely inspired. That they don't need to stop and try to understand those they preach against and that not even observing god's (supposed) creation differing from their beliefs is good enough to convince them that they went astray. Replacing god with themselves and showing others a false image of god crafted from their own ideas. Their god came to earth choosing poverty and meekness for himself yet you'll be hard pressed to find a church that doesn't state it deserves the opposite of that because they supposedly represent him. You'll find christians that know little to nothing about atheists or even other forms of christianity rabildy attacking them with arguments that are often not or only partially substantiated and blindly rejecting to look deeper. For a god who is supposedly truth so much of christianity seems completely happy with ignorance or even outright lies if it serves their goals. And it goes downhill from there. I heard so much about the Pharishes rejecting god because he didn't align with their ideas. I don't believe christianity is true anymore, but if it were and Jesus were to return tomorrow I feel most would reject him because he wouldn't be in their denomination.

Church leaders turned the words "eunuch" and "virgin" into technical terms referring to certain physical acts or conditions, but that misses the point. Sexual purity has nothing to do with being straight or celibate or naive.

Completely agree!! I grew up in a hardcore Lutheran household and now consider myself agnostic (I admit to some beliefs I can't shake, but I don't know if ANY religion has it right). I watch him because he makes me think about what I believe and why, but no video has ever changed my viewpoints completely, they've just made me question things. I had my first sip of alcohol 60 years ago, when I was 6. My first cigarette 55 years ago, and my first sex 52 years ago. Guess I was always an early adopter. 🤣
There are some things that are lost in translation because of our lack of words in our current language. It is always good to switch between a few translations to try and better understand what the original text was trying to communicate. Martian Luther's speech translated into another language might not have the same exact meaning, but the points it makes will always be the same.
That is a baseless claim, because our modern translations (except for KJV or some other fringe syriac translations) are based on common texts that have been translated from the aggregated original copies. And all discrepancies are minor. Except for those in the old testament eastern orthodoxy.
My favorite is "you were never really saved". I love how the message is all inclusive when they're bringing you in but decidedly EXCLUSIVE when you leave. 😂
Some denominations believe in eternal security, meaning you can never lose your salvation. So the only way they can explain someone leaving the faith is that they must never have been saved in the first place. Nevermind that God is supposed to be the only one who knows people's hearts... these people don't seem to have any qualms about passing judgment in such cases.
@@artemisnite Yeah that is some protestant nonsense. The truth is, we cannot know who b is saved and who is not. We are not privvy to what goes down when the angels and demons assemble at the death bed. Another thing to consider is that salvation is not a single event, it is a process of spiritual healing that leads to theosis. We spend our whole lives struggling against the passions, trying to repent. Ultimately, everything that happens to us, good and bad, is for the purpose of salvation. God is healing his creation.
I actually heard this brought up when I was taking Catholicism classes and was so confused that the pastor could be so delusional that people leave religion in order to sin. It really says a lot about someone who would actually believe this.
Well the thing is it's like this right to sin not always done on purpose. That's well kind of one of the things I love about Christianity it forces self growth worth a higher purpose.

I Understand it you grew up either in a shallow tradition in America or just didn't bother talking to your priest or had a bad one. That happens too. The whole idea of self growth and self improvement through the grace of God is center. We call it theosis.

@@thomasmaughan4798 not everyone leaves because they want to sin, some leave because they feel another school of thought is more correct, others because they start to feel like they're sining by staying or that believing in a certain doctrine in the mainstream church is a sin, some even leave to go to a more extreme version of the religion or to a religion they interpret as fitting the existing scripture better, others leave because they cant bring themselves to believe in abrahamic theology(believe it or not, belief isnt really a choice)

I left because it is not true. The gospels are forgeries, the Paul's letters show he didn't know about an earthly Jesus, etc. I recommend Richard Carrier's books.

So strange when I hear these young ex-fundanentalists say, "When I left Christianity." As an extremely lapsed Catholic, my experience was nothing like that. It was the late 60s/early 70s, and I guess we Catholic schoolboys just were not so emotionally invested in all that mummery--we just drifted into being hippies. There was no decisive moment and no hard feelings, really. I mean, the hardcore fascists in our parish might have called us "commie-pinko faggots," and we might have called them "Nazis," but no one ever called us "heretics or "apostates." Our little hippie bands still played at the annual parish picnics, where we would have a beer with our old priests and try to explain the lyrics of the Black Sabbath songs we were covering. In fact, we also still played at the church's guitar masses. This massive difference is probably down to the fact that evangelicalism is such a freakish, mind-consuming cult.
Despite the hard line of the church on Abortion and divorce as a former Catholic (now universalist) from Ireland a Catholic country i find Catholicism more tolerant. American Christianity scares Irish Christians. Its alien and cult like. I went to catholic Mass last night and the Catholic priest said good atheists are closer to god than bad Christians

These were Catholic parish events--we were only ever "paid" with beer. As to the alleged atheism, you really have not grasped what all this religious mumbo-jumbo was like for us. Unlike the lunatic evangelicals, we just didn't take all that crap very seriously, not that this precluded some vague appreciation for that belief system. We never killed anyone or coveted our neighbor's ox, dude. The people at these picnics and guitar masses were our families, friends and neighbors (not all of whom were even Catholic.) They were our community and we never had to "break away" from them, unlike the refugees from those wretched evangelical cults.
Having known a few Catholics myself, I would guess it's because on average they tend to be much more nominal than the average evangelical. They go to mass on Sunday and do the rituals but don't engage with it much outside of that. In the evangelical movement, your faith is supposed to be integral to all aspects of your life, so for someone to leave is to turn their back on everything. These are generalizations, of course, but that's my take.

@@timeshark8727 I can't speak for your parents or anyone else, but for me it has nothing to do with comfort and everything to do with shedding my pride. I was on the fence for so long going back and forth between doing what I want and submitting to God, and it is a disaster if you try to do both. I understand if you don't care for scripture, but the following supports my personal experience, and I can't deny the truth in it's relevancy to my own life. Revelation 3 says “‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth." Lukewarm means that you are trying to serve God while actively following your own way of life as well. He is saying that it is better to fully reject God and live how you want than to try to serve 2 masters. (Serving your flesh vs serving God) and the reason I say this is because you eventually have to either completely choose God, or completely reject him. I've lived years as a "believer" actively living in sin, doing what I want but trying to include God in the picture when I want. There were times I wanted to just give up completely on faith so that I could live guilt-free with the things that I wanted to do, but thankfully I held on and now reject my own life style. Romans 8 says "For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot." Maybe some people use it as a comfort argument, but for me, it literally came down to choosing my own way or choosing God's way. I had to own up to my mistakes and let go of my pride to see the big picture and to see just how much more rewarding God's plan is for my life than anything I could ever do on my own.

Rejecting a god doesn't help at all to sin. Accepting a god doesn't remove a sin either. To commit crime and to Sin are very different things. To do a crime is to do bad thing to others. But to sin is to go against god rule. If god command you to kill people, then by not killing people, your sinning. If a god exists, then it's irrelevant whether to "reject god because want to Sin" There's no point to reject the existence of something already exists. + People don't say "I reject Broccoli existence because I just want to eat meat" So the only reasonable way to reject god is to reject believing in something that doesn't have any evidence of existence. Which mean "reject god" have nothing to do with sin, since there is no "god command" for you to go against.
I'm an atheist and I was raised a Christian but after researching ancient religions & all and I saw that the Bible stories came from religions way before the Christian religion they just changed the names and places & the dates and so I don't want to sin or be it immoral. I just don't believe in a God
When I hear/read such critics saying "you were never a true believer". My eyebrow raises, and I have to wonder about their own beliefs...and I wonder how deeply they truly hold them...

@Babyhowdy233 ah yes punishing two humans with no knowledge of good and evil until they ate the fruit from the tree they were forbidden to eat from. All with enticing fruit, nothing to prevent them from eating it, and a crafty serpent to manipulate them. And what punishment do these humans who previously didn't know right from wrong get for basically being set up to fail? Death, plagues, starvation, etc. Wow that's a totally justifed punishment for eating some fruit you were told not to! Also if heaven is so nice why would the angels rebel? Lucifer's reason is apparently pride but then he's somehow able to convince a large portion of heaven to join him! Heaven sounds more like a dictatorial place rather than an eternal paradise if a significant portion of the population staged a rebellion. I wouldn't be surprised if heaven was a dictatorship. This is the same character that deems anyone that doesn't meet his standards worthy of eternal torment with little to no gray area. After all this is the character that thinks getting angry at someone is the same as murdering them and having sexual thoughts is the same as committing adultery.

It's tragic that Christians are so unwilling to hear out others who do not share the same view as themselves. As a Christian myself, I spend a good amount of time trying to persuade other Christians of being able to engage unbelievers and to be able to have meaningful conversation with people of different world views, and it's almost impossible because SO many Christians have this narrow structure of thinking. I believe the Christian world view is true, but I also think it's a double standard to want to convince others of your world view (such as Christianity) and not be willing to hear the views of others because of a presupposition that anyone else's view is wrong. I may disagree with the world view of the majority of people who find themselves at this channel, but I'm certainly sympathetic to the brick wall mind-set atheists and agnostics must run into when having the misfortune of speaking to 99.9% of Christians.

I was referring to what I was typing this particular post about, being that Christians often want others to believe what they believe foundationally and want others to see their perspective on things (which I agree is a good thing) but are unwilling to try to see the perspectives of others who don't share the same view. This is a very difficult way to evangelize. If you can't see through someone else's eyes (best one is able to anyway), then it is almost impossible to have a meaningful conversation with them. I'm simply saying that in the churches that I have been to and Christians that I have met over my lifetime are trying to bring others to Christ (which again, I think is a good thing) but are mostly ineffective because they won't do the very thing that they are wanting others to do, try to see things differently. When I began questioning what the last church I was attending,was teaching, I drew on my career in law enforcement and investigated Christianity (And Judaism) the same way I would investigate a crime. A few years and many late nights later, I came to the conclusion that no District Attny worth his butt would present this to be prosecuted. There is simply no evidence. There is no physical evidence, no witnesses and any statements are all hearsay. If someone can bring me real evidence, then I might accept the idea that God/Gods are real. However they might also be ET as Clarke said “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Keep up the work Dude.
Following your logic, do u believe that all crimes have been brought infront of a judge & jury? Or that some injustice has never even been put forth. All convicted are truelly guilty? All those acquitted are innocent?
If you truelly believe that the court and all it holds is true justice - then yeah, u can use the analogy that there is no evidence there is no god/gods therefore there is no existence of god/gods. But we all know courts arent perfect bearers of justice
The definition of sin tends to change, usually at the convenience of the ruling class. How does one believe in an all-powerful deity that's into micromanaging a bunch of hairless apes living on a dust mote? A god that tells you what you can eat, what crops to plant, what clothes you can wear, when you can work, who you can love, etc.
Fun fact: the laws in the early Bible have really cool biological stuff that they codified into religion. Like not eating pork (parasites) and when to circumcise (after baby’s blood can clot on its own). I’m not saying I agree with how it’s addressed, I’m just saying that stuff isn’t as random as it seems.
What counts as sin in the old testament doesn't apply to the new and vice versa. If you read the Bible, you should know that. Circumcision is harmful, painful genital mutilation. Stupid for a god to require it. And there's nothing wrong with eating cooked pork or shellfish
Religion has a habit of dehumanizing people, you might not experience it on your end, but then again I suppose you never took a read through leviticus 20. That is the god of the bible's ideal of morality: death to everyone who does something he doesnt like.

This mirrors my own discovery of the faith that I was part of for over 30yrs...after I began to research more and more about the bible and christianity, the farther I moved away from it and eventually got to where I am now which is agnostic...small differences but you get my point, thank you for sharing your experience and story it was reassuring of my own objective choice to leave the Christian faith and risk everything as well in a family that is 100% christian and going back generations as well as grandparents I take care of that are both retired Methodist ministers and one also being a retired christian family counselor. On Paul's section: To keep the megachurch I worked for mega, the head pastor created the slogan "Major in the majors and minor in the minors." This way people could happily keep attending and tithing without looking too far into any sort of theology. In other words, "Just believe in Jesus and keep coming to church, don't think too deeply about it." ...whoops, I did think deeply about it, and now I'm an atheist.

A person can have faith that the scientists who find these things out are right but the scientists themselves don’t have faith in the process. They have to prove everything they say. I was eating some Micky D's in restaurant one day while in the middle of trade school around 7 years ago A man approached me and asked if he could talk to me about God and, morely curious than anything, (no one had done this to me before) I said sure. I prefaced with the fact that I *was* a Lutheran before becoming Atheist and he didn't seem to show hostility to that. We talked for around 20 or so minutes about our views and at one point he asked "If God gives us our morals and you reject him and so reject his morals, what stops you from doing what you want?" I thought for a second, and said "I have my own morals, most are the same as yours I'd imagine. I don't go around stealing stuff because it wouldn't sit right with me, along with the fact that I'd get arrested sooner or later". Honestly was a good conversation where neither of us attacked each other and had a genuine exchange. Wish all interactions went that way and that more religious people were like him.
I've been on this journey too. I've moving from athiest to agnostic and might even be considering a 'higher power' but definitely not a 'God' according to most religions. I think making a video like this takes courage, especially after a bad case of Christianity infection :). First time here, definitely worth a sub and thumbs up.

Listening to your channel makes me realize that I must be one of the lucky few that found an actual good, biblical, friendly, understanding, and non selfish church. Some of the things that I see in your comments and here you talk about that pushed you and others away are things that my church would absolutely frown upon or disagree with. It’s sad how many Christians push people away from Christ without realizing

The last 20 years have been plagued by an over “spiritualization” of the word, and what I mean by that is many places are teaching and acting based on how they feel spiritually about a piece of text rather than analyzing its context within the Bible and historical meaning to try and understand the message God was trying to give. If it’s in the Bible, it’s true and I believe it. And a lot of people have beliefs that they think came from the Bible, but they did not
It is important to separate ones emotional experience or trauma from a true search for meaning. I grew up a strong Christian, and then an atheist for 25 years, and have now returned to the faith. My desire to, and use the term “live for myself” rather than sin since that word seems to be rather volatile, kept me away from the faith. My never ending search for meaning brought me back. I wish everyone on this channel the best, and all I know is my own journey which has taken me back to Jesus. In my experience, if you never give up searching then you’ll make it back there. Put aside all the white noise out there about religion and just read what Jesus said in the book of John. It’s truly remarkable stuff.
@Hunterkage Joestar I don’t feel like addressing each of your points, but I will say that it certainly never calls women worthless. God clearly states that he sent and sacrificed his son for everyone. If God thought women were worthless I highly doubt that would’ve happened. The Bible contains multiple different types of teaching and commands. You’re confusing commands that God gave to a specific culture and commands that he gave all of his followers to carry out through all of time and history. Here’s a quote that greatly oversimplifies the topic but gets the main point in a hurry: “Though a bit of an oversimplification, it can be helpful to think of God’s commands in the Old Testament as divided into civil (social), ceremonial (religious), and moral (ethical) categories. Those laws that relate to the civil and ceremonial (for example, food laws, sacrifices, circumcision, cities of refuge, etc.) find their fulfillment in Christ and no longer apply”

I was recently forced by my father to meet with a pastor who when after talking for almost an hour, brought this argument up when nothing else I said made sense (to him). I had the same belief when I was a Christian - that Christians that become atheists were choosing the 'easy way out' and were just giving in to their desires/sin/evil. It was a shock that I found it to be the opposite as I left the religion - it wasn't easy or fun, but rather, de-converting was an incredibly long and challenging process. I had to fight and argue with my Christian family for years and learn enough philosophy and psychology to understand what was actually happening and why they were reacting the way they were. There was no sin involved; even something like pride (except of course the 'sin' of being unable to believe the lies of religion). I felt miserable and alone. As much as I wanted to, I couldn't go back to believing things that I now knew were false. I had 'eaten from the tree of knowledge', and now there was no way to erase that knowledge. It took me years to overcome the mind-numbing brain-washing and to finally feel 'good' again. "To undo the work of indoctrination on an innocent child by well-meaning but ultimately ignorant parents it takes years of patient, persevering toil; many months of study and persistent, determined clearing away of all the weeds, filth and rubbish that has encumbered her mind; and to plant therein the seeds of truth, wisdom, purity and freedom of thought. Right now I’m in the midst of doing exactly what you describe in your first paragraph there and finding it incredibly difficult as you did. Listening and reading peoples stories has been helping me a lot. Here’s hoping I come out alright on the other end of this 😅
If your indoctrination was “ignorant but with pure intentions” can you not agree that to a certain extent all parents both religious and non religious indoctrinate their kids with their world views, and that it’s the right thing to do. Why would you not try to give them a head start by teaching them what u believe is right, the only error i see is them refusing to let you deviate from it after u have reached maturity/adulthood. And regardless of your “brainwashing” claim we both know u value some of what you learnt as it shaped who u are today. Be patient with your family like a mother to a child, understand that it’s not out of hate but love that they are reacting irrationally.
This reminded me of an encounter with a climate change denier. His lecture started with a discussion of the nefarious motives of people who claim that climate change is real rather than with a discussion of what is wrong with their position. He seemed unable to consider the possibility of someone being honestly mistaken.
Honestly though, how does a person deny that we are killing our planet? The average temperatures are insane now and animals are literally dying yet those people say “NO YOU ARE A BRAINWASHED ZOMBIE SPY FOR THE GOVERNMENT!!!!” How the *hell* can someone deny that when they throw away plastic, it kills creatures?! How willfully ignorant must a person be to be that stupid?! How can they be so selfish by denying that we are killing the climate?! *HOW DO THEY LIVE WITH THEMSELVES?!?!*
The day I realized there was no God was a really difficult experience. I spent my whole life believing in this truly unbelievable and a magical being and all of a sudden my life felt empty, but I realized I could now fill that emptiness with good values that were not dictated by people who also sin. I'm probably a better person now than I was as a Christian. There are far too many contradictions and dogmas in religion.

It's weird when someone believes that a sentient being who has always existed spoke the universe into existence, tries to tell me I'm the one who believes everything came from nothing.
I left christianity when i was around 11, i was passionate about history and would constantly research more events. Eventually i decided to study the story of christianity and all that i found were baseless claims, false miraclres, and a boatload of hearsay. The amount of contradictory evidence that is given in the bible is already staggering, to paraphrase; God said "Thou shalt not kill" then God said "Gays shall be stoned to death" as a child that questioned everything i learned, that planted the seed of disbelief that then grew into me being agnostic. The day i see a real miracle or God stops sleeping and letting the world rot i will believe once more.
I’ve found it helps to go back to the original Hebrew text to understand the meanings behind some verses, since the weight of words in Hebrew or Greek can get lost in translation to English. The original verse- Exodus 20:13- in Hebrew actually says (translated literally, read from left to right like English) “You shall murder Not”. This distinguishes what type of killing it is, separating vengeful bloodshed from capital punishment. As for what you said by “Gays shall be stoned to death”, are you referring to Leviticus 20:13?
Dear GMS, I pay my deepest homage to your wonderful, respectful videos, but I have to say that the gracious pastarian caresses of the Flying Spaghetti Monster had saved me when I had been starving for two or three days by offering me her own body. Her sauce resonated on my tongue, and at that moment I was transported to witness the magnificence of the galaxies knotting themselves in a whirl as she wills them into her many images, one of them being the magnificent Azathoth that dreams its dreams at the center of it all. There was also the time when I almost ran into the road on a red light when I felt the fettuccini wrap around my appendages as she told me to value my one life, or there will be no more spaghetti for me. Hey, Drew! I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos. I remember that when I was in school I had learned about the world in my science and history class. After a long time of thinking to myself and looking up information, I could no longer be a Christian. After I had accepted that I didn't believe in god I tried talking to my mother about it. I thought I could explain to her why I didn't think god was real, this was met with harsh rejection and with me being told to shut up or be sent to a Christian school. I was very upset by this and started to resent Christians and religion in general. I felt very alone at the time. Then I stumbled upon you and some other atheists channels. Your videos made me feel better and helped me accept that you can't have a discussion with people who aren't going to bother listening to your argument. Your videos also helped me see that I'm not alone and I have made some atheist friends at school and that I even have atheist family members that just pretend to be Christians. I don't talk to my mother about my beliefs or lack of but I don't resent her for it. I know that she genuinely believes that god is real and that nonbelievers go to hell and she doesn't want that for me, so I'm willing to play pretend for her sake. I'm sure she knows that I don't believe, but I will let her pretend that I do. I do sometimes make remarks to my Christian friends and they will get a little uncomfortable, but I try not to offend anyone. I know in the past I was angrier, but I'm trying not to be. Your videos have helped me see that being angry doesn't get you anywhere. I'm sorry this is long, but I want to say thank you to you and the atheist community on youtube.

When i quit the jehovah's witnesses i looked into the claims they made about the church fathers, since they say that after st johns death a great apostasy occurred, introducing pagan ideas like the immortal soul and the trinity. I was fascinated to find out what they actually said and argued. Nothing like what id been led to believe. Great video guys.

Okay, here‘s my take on it, I as a Christian first overall want to say thank you for this video, as it was very interesting. Now I personally don’t think that people leave Christianity because they want to sin, perhaps some do but definitely not all. I mean the most likely reason for Christians losing faith would be Christianity itself, people loose their patience to dig through all of these different views denominations ect. As a Christian I can relate to that, for it gets to me as well at times. Also all of these people accusing each other of heresy and rebuking each other doesn’t help. I think we actually need to start to admit that it is mostly Christians that make Christians loose their faith. These are the thoughts that came to whilst watching this video, I think most viewers here are rather Atheists, but still God bless everybody reading this.
Supernintendo Chalmers most people I've met who claim the evidence if what is lacking appear to have selected a particular set of evidence they find convincing and then close their minds to anything that doesn't agree with the evidence they're prepared to accept. As a Christian I find sceptics are just as locked into their beliefs as Christians who are locked into a particular doctrine. We are all just people trying to make sense of a very complex world. I'm about to turn 70 and I hope I will always be open to new data but I think knowing Jesus is not something I can ever doubt, He became my best friend 50 years ago when I knew no Christians and He is still more real to me than you are because you could simply be an avatar, He is my brother and has been my faithful companion for 50 years.
Supernintendo Chalmers well, a lot of people do say that and the Bible speaks on that topic a few times, so yes people loose faith because of the lack of evidence. Then again I would say it is important to look at what background these people come from, do they come from a fundamental background that only sees black and white, because I think that for ultra fundamentals it is much easier to loose faith. NT Wright said, that if their view cracks it automatically breaks completely, since for them if one thing becomes false or doubtful, the whole narrative becomes doubtful or false. That’s why I personally try to always keep my mind a bit open, since closing it to only one narrative makes having faith rather hard, I mean I never liked hiding from things because I fear they’ll make me loose faith. I personally trust God that my faith can be tested, I also believe that Christianity can fit in pretty well with science and logic, even the supernatural aspects of it. I guess I would be a bit of a CS Lewis, since I like his view on God and Christianity. God bless.
Supernintendo Chalmers I'm only speaking from personal experience and I was talking about people who refuse to even look at any evidence other than that which will support their claims. I have met a number of people like that over the years. However, I would think that if you were biblically literate during the time you called yourself a Christian you would know that faith is not based on evidence, it is "the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen." Christianity isn't primarily about looking for evidence, although I have never been confronted with any to make me doubt my Lord's claims about Himself, Christianity is about Jesus. It's about meeting Him, getting to know Him, trusting Him, walking with Him and learning to understand His love, grace and mercy for us. I am sad you have turned your back on Him but you are made in His image in that you have the right to make that choice, you have free will.
Exactly. According to protestant doctrine at least, your acts neither condemn you nor redeem you. You are damned for the Sin of Adam and redeemed by the blood of Christ. Performing good works means nothing and by implication, sinning changes nothing either.
I thought I was becoming an atheist for a while but realized I still looked at the Bible as if I was a child. Going to heaven and getting wings and a harp and sitting on clouds. I then realized that we know nothing about the universe and what we know as humans is only a fraction of what is. Angels have no way to truly make us understand the true nature of God, we are not able to come anywhere near bring able to understand a being that exists beyond all dimensions.
We know a lot about the universe actually. This is how we have airplanes and cars, telephones and computers. All of those things came about because of our scientific understanding about how things work. Can we know everything? I have no idea because nobody knows everything and can tell us what we missed. We can only know what we know. And that is pretty freaking amazing. But in all of our investigations, all of our experiments, not once have we demonstrated anything near a god. Until that happens I am going to remain unconvinced that one exists.
@@joecoolioness6399 I agree we know a lot, a lot about how the 4 dimensions we live in works. But if we were all blind we wouldn't know anything about sight. Now it's possible that everything we don't know is irrelevant and we have all the knowledge of the universe nailed down, but I think we have barely scratched the surface.

@Ozymandias Nullifidian Hi, I wasn't going to respond but I think there was a misunderstanding. Condescending and criticism are very different words. Condescending is a tone of voice. Usually to make the one you're talking to feel stupid. It can be hard to pick up in text. Especially if you're not reading it in your first language. Criticism usually is a negative opinion on a subject. (There is constructive criticism and unconstructive criticism). In this case it wasn't even a criticism. "Did you know gods and magic aren't real?" Wheres the criticism there? It's just trying to make the OG poster feel stupid. Of course, I feel religion should be criticized but I do not feel that being condescending is helpful. Especially if the one you're talking to wasn't even rude in the first place.
What amazes me is the fact that every christian I am aware of, believes that when you accept Jesus as your god and savior, you instantly receive the holy spirit, and that the holy spirit will guide a person as they pray and ask for wisdom and understanding, and all of these demonination's preachers will pray along with their congregation prior to a sermon for this wisdom, and yet they proceed to read scripture and interpret it very differently. This may not seem like such a big deal, but when the controversial subjects include the means t which a person is saved like the group which I came from who insist that the sinners prayer is essential, or the other groups that say faith plus work, or faith only, and all these groupls will say behind the pulpit that unless it is performed during one'slife time as they interpret it, other s will go to hell. The bible asserts that this god is not an author of confusion, and that it will give wisdom and understanding if one prays for it, yet I find evidence to the contrary that such a spirit exists just by being an ousider and observing what happens when these christians do the things that the bible says to do to have wisdom, and yet all there is is confusion when you listen to how these people interpret the same scriptures and preach. It's exactly wht you would expect if those scripture promises are manmade fabrications, and a holy spirit in fact does not exist. You get people just speaking out what is on their minds, and their minds alone with no external spiritual influence. All of this finger pointing that theists do to each other making heretical accusations I would be tempted to say is comical, but honestly it's sad, because t just strengthens the point of how religion can do a good job at dividing people rather than uniting them without the threat of force converting everyone to believe one particular thing or being put to death for not sharing that one interpretation of the religion. Religion I do understand is not the only thing that causes division between people and/or groups, but it certainly does a good job of it.
Had a guy just the other day brag to me about the "rich intellectual history" of Christianity. The man actually believes that the fact people are still coming up with new interpretations and hypotheses, while only being able to strike down the most ridiculous, is a good thing. Science puts out lots of hypotheses, then boils down to one after enough testing and thought. Religion just endlessly spits out abstract ideas and interpretations with little to no means of proving or disproving anything.
When I was a Christian, I used to wrestle with making sense of this very thing. The evidence seemed to imply that the Holy Spirit said different things to different people. I never had a satisfying answer for this, until I ultimately realized "the Holy Spirit" was just an individual's own mind speaking back to them, and then all the differences made perfect sense.

I was very hurt by that at the time but now I find it funny because if I don't believe in a God I certainly don't believe in a hell either! I love this guy's honesty. I started breaking away from Christianity when I was in my teen years. And I was accused of wanting to sin. My answer was "I was already sinning as a Christian". I married young, had my children young. While in my 20s and 30s I watched all my Christian friends and family drink alcohol excessively dabble in non meritable sex and drugs. While I'm over here not drinking, taking drugs or any of the other supposed sinful things people around me were doing. Not one of them got the irony. I've also noticed whenever someone is being accused of a crime or wrong doing they say" I'm a good Christian" I would never do that. Like saying the word Christian exonerates them from wrongdoing. The hypocrisy kills me.
I suppose there is a certain naïve charm in a dreaming machine supposing it could have any sort of understanding of *any* of Christianity, which died out as a living tradition(a tradition *not* found in any books).
And they’re fallible just like all other people, but they don’t see that. The moral superiority kills me.
"Good Christian" is code for "mindlessly submitting to authority figure". You can commit virtually any crime and still be a 'good' Christian, but the moment you abandon the faith then suddenly your soul is beyond saving.

I'm a Christian and 9 do think it's possible for a society to form a moral base to their social structure.
The parts of our brain like sympathy, empathy, logic, etc would work together to form these moral standards.
Edit: it's funny how the rebels like being told they did it all in their own.

The 'you left the faith because you love sin' argument reassures believers that they're separate from, and better than, the apostate, because it implies that one must leave the faith if one loves sin (which is clearly preposterous). It lets them believe Christianity somehow shields them from sin, making it easier for them to justify their own misdeeds, or see them as a one-off.
yes it can, but i think that it also demonstrates a lack of understanding of WHY a person will fail to believe in God. It fails to account that people can be moral and also reasonably believe that no deities exists.
Also, from what I understand, Christians believe in forgiveness through God, though different denominations have differing views on this. So, forgiveness for one's sins can only be achieved through worship of God, and this, depending on the interpretation, of course can also have the potential to be abused by those who want to commit immoral acts

@Christine Cyrus The church is THE mystical body of christ and THE CHURCH (catholic church) was instituted by christ himself. The church is intrusted (by christ) to evangelize the entire world. Because only the church by the guidance of the Holy spirit can teach the fullness of christ's teachings.

Christ said call no one father, for you have one Father in heaven, and you are all brothers and sisters. Christ sacrifice got rid of the whole priest system. That's the reason the veil ripped at his crucifixion. God was doing away with the high priest and priest system. All are free to go directly to God without any intermediators. Christ is now our high priest and intermediator. There shouldn't be any priests, bishops, or popes. So the Catholic Church and all Christian denominations are obsolete. Actually they've been obsolete for over 2,000 years now. It's just Christian churches are either too hard headed, too greedy, or too ignorant of the Bible to recognize this. If your definition of mystical body is a spiritual Church across all nations without clergy, then yes I agree that Jesus did intend 1 Catholic (Universal) Church under God.

Therefore, I will try to back some of my reasoning with scripture. However this is an extremely complex concept that's taken me years of Biblical study to uncover.

From this verse we see that from early on God has been intending for his people to become a nation of priests. The only intermediator between the priests and God is the high priest. So you see the ancient traditional religious system was foreshadowing God's plan for a future spiritual system. Thus with Jesus's sacrifice he became our high priest.
This is why in Revelation 1 Jesus is described wearing a long robe with a golden sash, and he is tending the lampstands. This is the attire of the high priest. It was the high priest duty to tend to the lamp stand (Numbers 8.1). So Revelation is saying Jesus is now the high priest.
Revelation 5.9 And they sang a new song:
“Worthy are You to take the scroll and open its seals, because You were slain, and by Your blood You purchased for God those from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign upon the earth.
Note that in this verse Jesus has purchased his people through his sacrifice and made them into priests. Also note that it says they will reign on the earth. So what Revelation is stating is that NOW all of his people are priests.
Jesus had hinted about this spiritual Church when he spoke with the woman at the well.
John 4.19 “Sir, the woman said, “I see that You are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place where one must worship is in Jerusalem.
“Believe Me, woman, Jesus replied, “a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. But a time is coming and has now come when the True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him. God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.
From this passage we see that Jesus is saying there will come a time when all will worship the Father in Spirit. Notice that Jesus says "a time is coming and has now come" Jesus sometimes does this when he is hinting at future prophecy. When he says the "time now come" he meant right after his crucifixion the Church would become spiritual. This is why in Revelation 21.2 the New Jerusalem comes down after the Old Jerusalem was destroyed.
The Old Jerusalem was the harlot on the beast. It was the old traditional religious system. It was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. So Christ universal spiritual Church is symbolically represented by the New Jerusalem coming out of heaven. Thus, the spiritual Church has already arrived. It arrived some 2,000 years ago. The whole old religious system is obsolete. Its been spiritually fulfilled in Christ.
Yet note that Jesus told the woman at the well "a time is coming" this is future. So Jesus was aware that even though the spiritual Church would be officially established right after his sacrifice, he perceived that corruption would infiltrate his spiritual Church. If you carefully read many of his parables, you will see he is hinting that the Church will be corrupted. For example the birds make their home in the mustard tree. The weeds are later discovered mixed with the wheat. This is Jesus way of hinting that his spiritual Church would be taken over by a corrupt Church system.
This is why in Revelation the harlot of Babylon has similarities between Jerusalem and Rome. Both are corrupt. Both are religious cities. Its a dual prophecy. Jerusalem was the old earthly Church and it was destroyed in 70 AD. Rome is the new earthly Church and prophecy suggest it will be destroyed. After this, Christ true spiritual Church will arise, as it should had been ever since his sacrifice.
Something many Christians struggle understanding is Christ new covenant. To be able to participate in this new spiritual Church we must be given the freedom to choose. This is why the Bible is saying we are priests. We have authority to make decisions. We are no longer under the Old Mosaic law (Torah).
However we also aren't bound by the Bible as many Christians think. That wouldn't make sense. Why would Christ free us from one primitive law only to chain us to a new primitive law? The Apostle Paul struggled with these ideas. He was inspired by God, but sometimes he mixed up the Old Covenant with Christ Covenant. This is one of the reasons why Christians get so mixed up. They don't realize the new covenant means we have complete freedom to follow our heart regardless what scripture says.
One of the reasons Christ came was to be an example of how we are to act in his new covenant. Notice that Christ followed his heart first in all his decision making. This is why he often answered peoples questions with parables. He was trying to get people to quit being reliant on the scripture for all their decisions. He knew scripture couldn't solve everyone's problems. He knew if everyone followed their heart they would be following the Holy Spirit which lives within the heart.
However Christ was in a unique situation. He had to literally abide by Torah while also abiding by grace. In his genius, he managed to handle this tight rope between justice and mercy. Whereas, we are free to completely follow grace.
If you carefully read the Apostle Paul's words and don't get sucked into some of his culture's biases and legalism you will perceive that all we have to do is follow Christ Spirit within us. Or as Jesus said...
Matthew 22.34 And when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they themselves gathered together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question: “Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?
Jesus declared, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.
From this passage we can see that to Jesus by following love we are being obedient to all scripture. Thus the heart is superior to the Bible. We are no longer under any type of law. The only law we are under is Christ law of love. The Bible has been trying to tell people this from the beginning. Quit worshiping scripture, and worship God. Or as Paul would likely say you people need to spiritually grow up, and be responsible. You need to quit trying to hide behind the law (the Bible).
These ideas are revolutionary. Without you realizing it, you are on the borderline of a spiritual revolution. Over time more and more of these ideas will be transmitted throughout the world. People will gradually wake up, and the old traditional Church which is dying will die. Jesus's prophecies are being and will be fulfilled. The Spiritual Church is being born.
@Christine Cyrus I can understand your frustration with the Catholic Church as I have been frustrated by what they did to Christ Spiritual Church. Yet the harlot of Babylon is not just the Catholic Church, but it also includes all the Christian churches which have arisen from her. This is why she is labelled as a mother. The harlot symbolically represents the whole Christian Church.
However there is a danger here of judging all of the Christian Church or Catholic church as being complete evil. Christ Spiritual Church is still here it's just its tangled up in all the corruption of the Church of the earth. It's like Christ planted a vine (true Church), but the devil planted thorns (false Church) around the vine. As the vine grew the thorns grew up around it.
So even as corrupt the Catholic church and other denominations of Christianity may be, there is a living spiritual vine within them all. This is why Jesus told the parable of the weeds and wheat. In the parable the servants of the owner wanted to uproot the weeds, but the owner told them no. Because if while uprooting the weeds they may mistakenly uproot the wheat too.
Revelation 18.4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say: "'Come out of her, my people,' so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues;
In this verse the angel is warning God's people to flee from the harlot. This signals that regardless how mislead and deceived many of these churches are, God still has people throughout the Christian denominations and Catholic church whom he claims as his own.
I just wanted to clarify that cuz you mentioned the Catholic church doesn't have the Holy Spirit. It does have the Holy Spirit however the Holy Spirit is being suffocated by thorny falsehoods. As the truth is released the Church of the earth will be revealed to be false, and Christ true Spiritual Church will thrive.

I agree. Admittedly this is just one person, but the most devout Christian I know knows less of/about the bible than I do, and I have never read it. I only know what I have learned from movies, TV shows, podcasts, etc. that reference or parody it.

I spent the vast majority of my life in the service of the church, with over a decade as a Deacon. I taught bible studies, led more prayer meetings than I can count, preformed musically on quite a few occasions, and, among other things, have read the bible cover to cover 4 full times. Note that I don't mean a verse or chapter here and there, I mean literally cover to cover from Genesis 1:1 to Revelations 22:21. Ok, I didn't read the concordance in the back, but you know what I mean.
I DO know what it means to follow Jesus, more than most, I'd say. The fourth readthrough of the scripture though, that one is about half of the reason I walked away from the church. I read it slowly, and carefully, and actually thought about what I read. I was horrified, and if you value your faith, I recommend you just let your preacher tell you what to read.
That horror, and the immense amount of hypocrisy I encountered in not only my own church but others I visited did the trick. Once my eyes were opened, I saw how cruel most 'christians' actually are. How little they actually care, even though they 'made the gestures'. How nasty they were about those they 'helped' once the heathens were out of sight.
I've seen the scandalous behavior, and the cover-up, and to my regret, took part in more than one such cover-up, even though I felt horrible for the person that was so badly wronged. Such was my 'duty to the church' as a Deacon, an authority figure, a role model. My cowardice in these matters, to not go to the people that were wronged and tell them what I knew still bothers me a lot, all these years later.
To be fair, there were a few that actually did live and practice what they preached, but that was an extremely small percentage.
So, yeah. I have some idea what it truly means to follow Jesus.

Something that's been on my mind, tangentially related to this - the Greek word translated as _sin_ is hamartia, which, to the original audience, would've meant one of two things: in the literal sense it's an archery term, missing a target, so _a mistake._ In the abstract, in literary analysis it was a term used to refer to a dramatic flaw, a character trait that leads to a great man's inevitable self-destruction, one of the defining tropes of classic tragedy.
Either way there's no implicit moral judgment to it. Everyone makes mistakes, and a character's dramatic flaw could easily be what would have made them the hero in a different story.

Very suspicious when someone accuses you of being motivated by a desire to sin. It strongly suggests projection: that the accuser himself has this motivation and desires to sin. It's easy to imagine for instance that someone strongly sexually repressed by religion would be very motivated to experience sexual release, sinning in his view.
Let me first state that I am a Christian myself. A Christian should clarify that we believe that ALL people have a desire to sin, whether they believe in the Bible or not. So many of my fellow Christians seem to be content with just restating platitudes to people that disagree with them and then write them off as someone whose ideas are not worth considering, as opposed to taking the time to have a discussion with someone who believes differently than oneself and having a conversation.
To be clear, I am not condemning a brother in Christ for suggesting that there are some people that would be reluctant to believe in God because they don't want someone judging them for doing things the Bible considers sinful. I think you and I could agree that there are probably people who exist with that mindset. However, if that person just stops there in their rebuttal, then that is far too simplistic. No one could ever know for sure someone's true motivation for believing or not believing in God. Assuming that you do know such a thing is, to me, arrogant and foolish whether you are a Christian or an atheist. I don't think that all atheistic ideas are ridiculous or that atheists are purely driven by nefarious motivations. Nor do I think that Christians are always driven by pure motivations. I find a lack of willingness among my fellow Christians to truly engage openly and sincerely with someone with whom they disagree.
It sort of reminds me of Job, when his friends accused him of sinning and bringing his misfortune down on himself even though that wasn’t the case.
@@justin2308 Yes, I agree with that comparison. Christians can be so bad sometimes about separating themselves from suffering by replacing real empathy with platitudes and cliches. I got the feeling that Job's friends were just trying to make themselves feel better by trying to force the world to make sense, when sometimes it clearly doesn't, at least to our finite human minds. I wonder what would happen if more of us were willing to be honest about our own doubts, insecurities, and weaknesses. I wonder if the gap between us and those who do not call themselves Christians wouldn't be so wide.

I am a devout Roman Catholic, and I agree with you on this. It is so plain to see in the Church that the hierarchy and authoritative positions are being abused by corrupt people who are not focused on using their position to bring the Church closer to God. Look at what most “anti-theists” will use to try to disprove religion, what they bring up is valid, but it just shows the fallibility of humans and puts even more emphasis on Paul’s quote on the ‘wolves’ that come to twist the truth.

Christians tell me all the time that I call myself an atheist because I am angry at god. Not sure what they think god did to piss me off, but to me, that's like being angry at the tooth fairy. Also, if God WAS real, then I would have many, MANY reasons to be angry at him. 2,821,364 reasons, for a start. That's just the people God has killed. On top of that, he advocates for restrictive societal rules, punishes people for eternity over finite, mortal acts, and punishes people who disbelieve in him because they weren't given sufficient evidence despite the fact that he could, at any time, convince everyone on the planet, simultaneously, of his existence with no effort (he IS omnipotent and omniscient after all). And these are just the things that come off the top of my head. The god of the bible is a jealous destroyer who, despite being beyond our comprehension, still seems to be beholden to very human motives with very human end goals (destroying/forcefully absorbing all competing groups into his own in order to propagate and spread his bloodline and way of life). Does this sound like a moral arbiter and a role model, especially for today's society? To me, it sounds like a rallying figure for a warlike society whose first and only concern is to prolong the survival of their genetic makeup and prolong the survival of the group. I cannot, and will not, force anyone to change their viewpoint on this topic. If believing in a God and afterlife helps you be at peace, then so be it. That is your decision, and your decision alone, to make. But to use this God as a reason to oppress groups solely on the predication that some prophet or some ancient society thousands of years ago stated that those groups should be oppressed is not only wrong, it is deplorable.

I got this thrown at me a lot when I left my old life as a jehovah's witness. When I explained my new understanding in evolution, they just stared at me and asked if that was the real reason, or if I just wanted to celebrate holidays. My own mother asked me, after respectfully explaining to her, if I had sinned and been unfaithful toward my husband. That baffled me. Its like the possibility of some one actually NOT believing in the bible is impossible. “You just want to sin.” This statement honestly reminds me of the mission trip I went on for school. Our professor told us, “Remember: You are the first- and probably only- Bible that people may read. Don’t just speak the word, DO it.” The reason I consider that mission trip successful is mainly because we listened to the stories that people had to tell us. Many times, they were more willing to engage in a biblical discussion with us- not as a debate, but as calmly as we were discussing the weather.
That shows a large amount of the problem, though: A lot of Christians don’t listen. They don’t try to understand or even sound welcoming at all to others. They do what Proverbs 18:13 warns against and give answers without hearing. There’s just this huge superiority complex over non-believers and even other Christians, the exact opposite of what God wants. It’s like they forget or don’t care about the fact that we are still sinners ourselves. I can say for certain that if these same people were where I had gone to about my doubts instead of my uncle (who is a pastoral counselor) and my professors (all psychologists), I most likely wouldn’t still be a Christian today myself. Overall, to tell someone leaving the church that they just want to sin is ridiculous to me, not to mention a phrase that hardens hearts. Why is that person leaving? Why does your child not want to go to church? Ask them, listen, and understand. And even if you don’t understand, work and try to find an answer together.
In my christian days (and later too by people trying to get me to come back) I was told that the greatest trick the devil played was to convince the world that he doesn't exist. I disagree. If christianity were true then his greatest trick was convincing christians (specially those in leadership positions) to give into their arrogance and treat it as divinely inspired. That they don't need to stop and try to understand those they preach against and that not even observing god's (supposed) creation differing from their beliefs is good enough to convince them that they went astray. Replacing god with themselves and showing others a false image of god crafted from their own ideas. Their god came to earth choosing poverty and meekness for himself yet you'll be hard pressed to find a church that doesn't state it deserves the opposite of that because they supposedly represent him. You'll find christians that know little to nothing about atheists or even other forms of christianity rabildy attacking them with arguments that are often not or only partially substantiated and blindly rejecting to look deeper. For a god who is supposedly truth so much of christianity seems completely happy with ignorance or even outright lies if it serves their goals. And it goes downhill from there. I heard so much about the Pharishes rejecting god because he didn't align with their ideas. I don't believe christianity is true anymore, but if it were and Jesus were to return tomorrow I feel most would reject him because he wouldn't be in their denomination.

I've read through King James version of the bible might have something to do with not believing many parts of it which are obvious contradictions.
There are some things that are lost in translation because of our lack of words in our current language. It is always good to switch between a few translations to try and better understand what the original text was trying to communicate. Martian Luther's speech translated into another language might not have the same exact meaning, but the points it makes will always be the same.
I have a Bible that's about 230 years old. Really cool actually and surprisingly unchanged to be honest.
That is a baseless claim, because our modern translations (except for KJV or some other fringe syriac translations) are based on common texts that have been translated from the aggregated original copies. And all discrepancies are minor. Except for those in the old testament eastern orthodoxy.
My favorite is "you were never really saved". I love how the message is all inclusive when they're bringing you in but decidedly EXCLUSIVE when you leave. 😂
Some denominations believe in eternal security, meaning you can never lose your salvation. So the only way they can explain someone leaving the faith is that they must never have been saved in the first place. Nevermind that God is supposed to be the only one who knows people's hearts... these people don't seem to have any qualms about passing judgment in such cases.

Another thing to consider is that salvation is not a single event, it is a process of spiritual healing that leads to theosis. We spend our whole lives struggling against the passions, trying to repent. Ultimately, everything that happens to us, good and bad, is for the purpose of salvation. God is healing his creation.

So strange when I hear these young ex-fundanentalists say, "When I left Christianity." As an extremely lapsed Catholic, my experience was nothing like that. No. As @andreichira7518 correctly points out, it had nothing to do with what you glibly mis-characterize as our "atheism" or "getting paid." These were Catholic parish events--we were only ever "paid" with beer. As to the alleged atheism, you really have not grasped what all this religious mumbo-jumbo was like for us. Unlike the lunatic evangelicals, we just didn't take all that crap very seriously, not that this precluded some vague appreciation for that belief system. We never killed anyone or coveted our neighbor's ox, dude. The people at these picnics and guitar masses were our families, friends and neighbors (not all of whom were even Catholic.) They were our community and we never had to "break away" from them, unlike the refugees from those wretched evangelical cults.
Having known a few Catholics myself, I would guess it's because on average they tend to be much more nominal than the average evangelical. They go to mass on Sunday and do the rituals but don't engage with it much outside of that. In the evangelical movement, your faith is supposed to be integral to all aspects of your life, so for someone to leave is to turn their back on everything. These are generalizations, of course, but that's my take.

I was on the fence for so long going back and forth between doing what I want and submitting to God, and it is a disaster if you try to do both. I understand if you don't care for scripture, but the following supports my personal experience, and I can't deny the truth in it's relevancy to my own life.
Revelation 3 says “‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth." Lukewarm means that you are trying to serve God while actively following your own way of life as well. He is saying that it is better to fully reject God and live how you want than to try to serve 2 masters. (Serving your flesh vs serving God) and the reason I say this is because you eventually have to either completely choose God, or completely reject him. I've lived years as a "believer" actively living in sin, doing what I want but trying to include God in the picture when I want. There were times I wanted to just give up completely on faith so that I could live guilt-free with the things that I wanted to do, but thankfully I held on and now reject my own life style. Romans 8 says "For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot." Maybe some people use it as a comfort argument, but for me, it literally came down to choosing my own way or choosing God's way. I had to own up to my mistakes and let go of my pride to see the big picture and to see just how much more rewarding God's plan is for my life than anything I could ever do on my own.
I'm a Christian and just wanna say I actually enjoy some of your content. You are honest and good willed, and show a good example for atheists and theists alike. And I can only agree with you about the bs of "you don't believe in God because you want to sin".

The point of sinning is you need to believe in a god anyway. Rejecting a god doesn't help at all to sin. Accepting a god doesn't remove a sin either.
To commit crime and to Sin are very different things. To do a crime is to do bad thing to others. But to sin is to go against god rule. If god command you to kill people, then by not killing people, your sinning.
If a god exists, then it's irrelevant whether to "reject god because want to Sin" There's no point to reject the existence of something already exists.

I'm an atheist and I was raised a Christian but after researching ancient religions & all and I saw that the Bible stories came from religions way before the Christian religion they just changed the names and places & the dates and so I don't want to sin or be it immoral. I have heard Christians claim that people who call themselves atheist are just being edgy.
It's tragic that Christians are so unwilling to hear out others who do not share the same view as themselves. As a Christian myself, I spend a good amount of time trying to persuade other Christians of being able to engage unbelievers and to be able to have meaningful conversation with people of different world views, and it's almost impossible because SO many Christians have this narrow structure of thinking. I believe the Christian world view is true, but I also think it's a double standard to want to convince others of your world view (such as Christianity) and not be willing to hear the views of others because of a presupposition that anyone else's view is wrong. I may disagree with the world view of the majority of people who find themselves at this channel, but I'm certainly sympathetic to the brick wall mind-set atheists and agnostics must run into when having the misfortune of speaking to 99.9% of Christians.

I was referring to what I was typing this particular post about, being that Christians often want others to believe what they believe foundationally and want others to see their perspective on things (which I agree is a good thing) but are unwilling to try to see the perspectives of others who don't share the same view. This is a very difficult way to evangelize. If you can't see through someone else's eyes (best one is able to anyway), then it is almost impossible to have a meaningful conversation with them. I'm simply saying that in the churches that I have been to and Christians that I have met over my lifetime are trying to bring others to Christ (which again, I think is a good thing) but are mostly ineffective because they won't do the very thing that they are wanting others to do, try to see things differently. I think it's a double standard.

When I began questioning what the last church I was attending,was teaching, I drew on my career in law enforcement and investigated Christianity (And Judaism) the same way I would investigate a crime. A few years and many late nights later, I came to the conclusion that no District Attny worth his butt would present this to be prosecuted. There is simply no evidence. There is no physical evidence, no witnesses and any statements are all hearsay. If someone can bring me real evidence, then I might accept the idea that God/Gods are real. However they might also be ET as Clarke said “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Keep up the work Dude.

The definition of sin tends to change, usually at the convenience of the ruling class. How does one believe in an all-powerful deity that's into micromanaging a bunch of hairless apes living on a dust mote? As a lifelong Roman Catholic, I never thought I'd be on the side on atheism when it comes to how NOT to dehumanize anybody.

This mirrors my own discovery of the faith that I was part of for over 30yrs...after I began to research more and more about the bible and christianity, the farther I moved away from it and eventually got to where I am now which is agnostic...small differences but you get my point, thank you for sharing your experience and story it was reassuring of my own objective choice to leave the Christian faith and risk everything as well in a family that is 100% christian and going back generations as well as grandparents I take care of that are both retired Methodist ministers and one also being a retired christian family counselor. I prefaced with the fact that I *was* a Lutheran before becoming Atheist and he didn't seem to show hostility to that. We talked for around 20 or so minutes about our views and at one point he asked "If God gives us our morals and you reject him and so reject his morals, what stops you from doing what you want?" I thought for a second, and said "I have my own morals, most are the same as yours I'd imagine. I don't go around stealing stuff because it wouldn't sit right with me, along with the fact that I'd get arrested sooner or later".
Honestly was a good conversation where neither of us attacked each other and had a genuine exchange. Wish all interactions went that way and that more religious people were like him.
I've been on this journey too. I've moving from athiest to agnostic and might even be considering a 'higher power' but definitely not a 'God' according to most religions. I think making a video like this takes courage, especially after a bad case of Christianity infection :). First time here, definitely worth a sub and thumbs up.
There is something greater and kinder than us , which by looking at our past records to overtake is a walk in the park.

Listening to your channel makes me realize that I must be one of the lucky few that found an actual good, biblical, friendly, understanding, and non selfish church. Some of the things that I see in your comments and here you talk about that pushed you and others away are things that my church would absolutely frown upon or disagree with. It’s sad how many Christians push people away from Christ without realizing

The last 20 years have been plagued by an over “spiritualization” of the word, and what I mean by that is many places are teaching and acting based on how they feel spiritually about a piece of text rather than analyzing its context within the Bible and historical meaning to try and understand the message God was trying to give. If it’s in the Bible, it’s true and I believe it. And a lot of people have beliefs that they think came from the Bible, but they did not
It is important to separate ones emotional experience or trauma from a true search for meaning. I grew up a strong Christian, and then an atheist for 25 years, and have now returned to the faith. My desire to, and use the term “live for myself” rather than sin since that word seems to be rather volatile, kept me away from the faith. My never ending search for meaning brought me back. I wish everyone on this channel the best, and all I know is my own journey which has taken me back to Jesus. In my experience, if you never give up searching then you’ll make it back there. Put aside all the white noise out there about religion and just read what Jesus said in the book of John. It’s truly remarkable stuff.
@Hunterkage Joestar I don’t feel like addressing each of your points, but I will say that it certainly never calls women worthless. God clearly states that he sent and sacrificed his son for everyone. If God thought women were worthless I highly doubt that would’ve happened.
The Bible contains multiple different types of teaching and commands. You’re confusing commands that God gave to a specific culture and commands that he gave all of his followers to carry out through all of time and history. Here’s a quote that greatly oversimplifies the topic but gets the main point in a hurry:
“Though a bit of an oversimplification, it can be helpful to think of God’s commands in the Old Testament as divided into civil (social), ceremonial (religious), and moral (ethical) categories. Those laws that relate to the civil and ceremonial (for example, food laws, sacrifices, circumcision, cities of refuge, etc.) find their fulfillment in Christ and no longer apply”

I had the same belief when I was a Christian - that Christians that become atheists were choosing the 'easy way out' and were just giving in to their desires/sin/evil. It was a shock that I found it to be the opposite as I left the religion - it wasn't easy or fun, but rather, de-converting was an incredibly long and challenging process. I had to fight and argue with my Christian family for years and learn enough philosophy and psychology to understand what was actually happening and why they were reacting the way they were. There was no sin involved; even something like pride (except of course the 'sin' of being unable to believe the lies of religion). I felt miserable and alone. As much as I wanted to, I couldn't go back to believing things that I now knew were false. I had 'eaten from the tree of knowledge', and now there was no way to erase that knowledge.
It took me years to overcome the mind-numbing brain-washing and to finally feel 'good' again.

If your indoctrination was “ignorant but with pure intentions” can you not agree that to a certain extent all parents both religious and non religious indoctrinate their kids with their world views, and that it’s the right thing to do. Why would you not try to give them a head start by teaching them what u believe is right, the only error i see is them refusing to let you deviate from it after u have reached maturity/adulthood. And regardless of your “brainwashing” claim we both know u value some of what you learnt as it shaped who u are today. This reminded me of an encounter with a climate change denier. His lecture started with a discussion of the nefarious motives of people who claim that climate change is real rather than with a discussion of what is wrong with their position. He seemed unable to consider the possibility of someone being honestly mistaken.
Honestly though, how does a person deny that we are killing our planet? The average temperatures are insane now and animals are literally dying yet those people say “NO YOU ARE A BRAINWASHED ZOMBIE SPY FOR THE GOVERNMENT!!!!” How the *hell* can someone deny that when they throw away plastic, it kills creatures?! The day I realized there was no God was a really difficult experience. I spent my whole life believing in this truly unbelievable and a magical being and all of a sudden my life felt empty, but I realized I could now fill that emptiness with good values that were not dictated by people who also sin. I'm probably a better person now than I was as a Christian. There are far too many contradictions and dogmas in religion.
If I may ask what good values did you find that were not available to you as a religious person?

I left christianity when i was around 11, i was passionate about history and would constantly research more events.
Eventually i decided to study the story of christianity and all that i found were baseless claims, false miraclres, and a boatload of hearsay. The amount of contradictory evidence that is given in the bible is already staggering, to paraphrase; God said "Thou shalt not kill" then God said "Gays shall be stoned to death" as a child that questioned everything i learned, that planted the seed of disbelief that then grew into me being agnostic.
The day i see a real miracle or God stops sleeping and letting the world rot i will believe once more.

I’ve found it helps to go back to the original Hebrew text to understand the meanings behind some verses, since the weight of words in Hebrew or Greek can get lost in translation to English. The original verse- Exodus 20:13- in Hebrew actually says (translated literally, read from left to right like English) “You shall murder Not”. This distinguishes what type of killing it is, separating vengeful bloodshed from capital punishment.
As for what you said by “Gays shall be stoned to death”, are you referring to Leviticus 20:13?

Hey, Drew! I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos. I remember that when I was in school I had learned about the world in my science and history class. After a long time of thinking to myself and looking up information, I could no longer be a Christian.
After I had accepted that I didn't believe in god I tried talking to my mother about it. I thought I could explain to her why I didn't think god was real, this was met with harsh rejection and with me being told to shut up or be sent to a Christian school. I was very upset by this and started to resent Christians and religion in general.
I felt very alone at the time. Then I stumbled upon you and some other atheists channels. Your videos made me feel better and helped me accept that you can't have a discussion with people who aren't going to bother listening to your argument. Your videos also helped me see that I'm not alone and I have made some atheist friends at school and that I even have atheist family members that just pretend to be Christians.
I don't talk to my mother about my beliefs or lack of but I don't resent her for it. I know that she genuinely believes that god is real and that nonbelievers go to hell and she doesn't want that for me, so I'm willing to play pretend for her sake. I'm sure she knows that I don't believe, but I will let her pretend that I do.
I do sometimes make remarks to my Christian friends and they will get a little uncomfortable, but I try not to offend anyone. I know in the past I was angrier, but I'm trying not to be. Your videos have helped me see that being angry doesn't get you anywhere. I'm sorry this is long, but I want to say thank you to you and the atheist community on youtube.

When i quit the jehovah's witnesses i looked into the claims they made about the church fathers, since they say that after st johns death a great apostasy occurred, introducing pagan ideas like the immortal soul and the trinity. Okay, here‘s my take on it, I as a Christian first overall want to say thank you for this video, as it was very interesting. Now I personally don’t think that people leave Christianity because they want to sin, perhaps some do but definitely not all. I mean the most likely reason for Christians losing faith would be Christianity itself, people loose their patience to dig through all of these different views denominations ect. As a Christian I can relate to that, for it gets to me as well at times. Also all of these people accusing each other of heresy and rebuking each other doesn’t help. I think we actually need to start to admit that it is mostly Christians that make Christians loose their faith.
These are the thoughts that came to whilst watching this video, I think most viewers here are rather Atheists, but still God bless everybody reading this.

Supernintendo Chalmers most people I've met who claim the evidence if what is lacking appear to have selected a particular set of evidence they find convincing and then close their minds to anything that doesn't agree with the evidence they're prepared to accept. As a Christian I find sceptics are just as locked into their beliefs as Christians who are locked into a particular doctrine. We are all just people trying to make sense of a very complex world. I'm about to turn 70 and I hope I will always be open to new data but I think knowing Jesus is not something I can ever doubt, He became my best friend 50 years ago when I knew no Christians and He is still more real to me than you are because you could simply be an avatar, He is my brother and has been my faithful companion for 50 years.
Supernintendo Chalmers well, a lot of people do say that and the Bible speaks on that topic a few times, so yes people loose faith because of the lack of evidence. Then again I would say it is important to look at what background these people come from, do they come from a fundamental background that only sees black and white, because I think that for ultra fundamentals it is much easier to loose faith. NT Wright said, that if their view cracks it automatically breaks completely, since for them if one thing becomes false or doubtful, the whole narrative becomes doubtful or false. That’s why I personally try to always keep my mind a bit open, since closing it to only one narrative makes having faith rather hard, I mean I never liked hiding from things because I fear they’ll make me loose faith. I personally trust God that my faith can be tested, I also believe that Christianity can fit in pretty well with science and logic, even the supernatural aspects of it. I guess I would be a bit of a CS Lewis, since I like his view on God and Christianity. God bless.

Supernintendo Chalmers I'm only speaking from personal experience and I was talking about people who refuse to even look at any evidence other than that which will support their claims. I have met a number of people like that over the years. However, I would think that if you were biblically literate during the time you called yourself a Christian you would know that faith is not based on evidence, it is "the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen." Christianity isn't primarily about looking for evidence, although I have never been confronted with any to make me doubt my Lord's claims about Himself, Christianity is about Jesus. It's about meeting Him, getting to know Him, trusting Him, walking with Him and learning to understand His love, grace and mercy for us. I am sad you have turned your back on Him but you are made in His image in that you have the right to make that choice, you have free will.

Exactly. According to protestant doctrine at least, your acts neither condemn you nor redeem you. You are damned for the Sin of Adam and redeemed by the blood of Christ. Performing good works means nothing and by implication, sinning changes nothing either.
I thought I was becoming an atheist for a while but realized I still looked at the Bible as if I was a child. Going to heaven and getting wings and a harp and sitting on clouds.
I then realized that we know nothing about the universe and what we know as humans is only a fraction of what is. Angels have no way to truly make us understand the true nature of God, we are not able to come anywhere near bring able to understand a being that exists beyond all dimensions.
We know a lot about the universe actually. This is how we have airplanes and cars, telephones and computers. All of those things came about because of our scientific understanding about how things work. Can we know everything? I have no idea because nobody knows everything and can tell us what we missed. We can only know what we know. And that is pretty freaking amazing. But in all of our investigations, all of our experiments, not once have we demonstrated anything near a god. Until that happens I am going to remain unconvinced that one exists.

Now it's possible that everything we don't know is irrelevant and we have all the knowledge of the universe nailed down, but I think we have barely scratched the surface.

Condescending and criticism are very different words.
Condescending is a tone of voice. Usually to make the one you're talking to feel stupid. It can be hard to pick up in text. Especially if you're not reading it in your first language.
Criticism usually is a negative opinion on a subject. (There is constructive criticism and unconstructive criticism). In this case it wasn't even a criticism. "Did you know gods and magic aren't real?" Wheres the criticism there? It's just trying to make the OG poster feel stupid.
Of course, I feel religion should be criticized but I do not feel that being condescending is helpful. Especially if the one you're talking to wasn't even rude in the first place.

What amazes me is the fact that every christian I am aware of, believes that when you accept Jesus as your god and savior, you instantly receive the holy spirit, and that the holy spirit will guide a person as they pray and ask for wisdom and understanding, and all of these demonination's preachers will pray along with their congregation prior to a sermon for this wisdom, and yet they proceed to read scripture and interpret it very differently. This may not seem like such a big deal, but when the controversial subjects include the means t which a person is saved like the group which I came from who insist that the sinners prayer is essential, or the other groups that say faith plus work, or faith only, and all these groupls will say behind the pulpit that unless it is performed during one'slife time as they interpret it, other s will go to hell. The bible asserts that this god is not an author of confusion, and that it will give wisdom and understanding if one prays for it, yet I find evidence to the contrary that such a spirit exists just by being an ousider and observing what happens when these christians do the things that the bible says to do to have wisdom, and yet all there is is confusion when you listen to how these people interpret the same scriptures and preach. It's exactly wht you would expect if those scripture promises are manmade fabrications, and a holy spirit in fact does not exist. You get people just speaking out what is on their minds, and their minds alone with no external spiritual influence.
All of this finger pointing that theists do to each other making heretical accusations I would be tempted to say is comical, but honestly it's sad, because t just strengthens the point of how religion can do a good job at dividing people rather than uniting them without the threat of force converting everyone to believe one particular thing or being put to death for not sharing that one interpretation of the religion. Religion I do understand is not the only thing that causes division between people and/or groups, but it certainly does a good job of it.
Had a guy just the other day brag to me about the "rich intellectual history" of Christianity. The man actually believes that the fact people are still coming up with new interpretations and hypotheses, while only being able to strike down the most ridiculous, is a good thing. Science puts out lots of hypotheses, then boils down to one after enough testing and thought. Religion just endlessly spits out abstract ideas and interpretations with little to no means of proving or disproving anything.
Sadly, cults like jehovah's witnesses pounce on this and purport to make sense of the bible while distorting/disproving orthodox doctrine
When I was a Christian, I used to wrestle with making sense of this very thing. The evidence seemed to imply that the Holy Spirit said different things to different people. I never had a satisfying answer for this, until I ultimately realized "the Holy Spirit" was just an individual's own mind speaking back to them, and then all the differences made perfect sense.
