Girl, you’re my inspiration. I got so much crap and discouragement from my professor this past semester in graphic design but watching your videos brings me back to life and ready to kick some 🍑
My graphic design bachelor's degree was the biggest waste of time - the moment I got out and got some real life experience really brought to light the bias that professors have. Art is so incredibly subjective. Just keep doing you but don't be afraid to ask for criticism. :)
As I have been a graphic design/visual communications student for the past 5yrs (ive transferred colleges and lost credits so I'm behind a little) I have noticed every professor is different in their opinions and advice. The good professors tell you what you're doing right but also ways you can improve. Bad professors tend to tell you they don't like it but don't give you reasoning or advice on how to fix it. I suggest, if these are the professors you are encountering, to find other professors in the degree program and get their advice as well as advice from other students. Critiques are a very good thing and will help you grow so much as a designer. There's been multiple occasions where I have had the crappy professor who tell me I shouldn't do this but I should do this and I come back the next week with my project looking how I wanted it to and they agree that it looks so much better and don't realize that I completely ignored their suggestion. Sometimes you just have to go with what you feel is right and not what the professor has told you. Sorry I'm rambling on but I love giving people advice since I've been experiencing this for so long so my last comment will be the same as earlier; ask your peers their opinions as well, the more the better because the more opinions you get on your projects the more it will help you realize what is good and what needs to be changed. Good luck and don't give up! There's lots of good professors out there so I hope you have one next semester!

My God, that's a gorgeous portfolio. And it highlights exactly where I'm lacking: creativity. I can draw, understand the fundamentals of lighting, composition, shapes, blablabla... and give good representations of existing things like animals, landscapes or furniture, but actually designing stuff in a personal style, or come up with varied character designs, nope. The moment I have to imagine something, I just can't. Maybe because I don't have an idea of what I want to design or my mind is too chaotic to focus on something in particular, or maybe having grown up with so many cartoons and visual influences I feel like half of what I come up with rips someone off, no idea, but it just doesn't work for me for some reason. Any tips to clear my mind or get myself in the right mindset would be helpful if someone has any ideas?
The easiest way for me to get past creative block is taking any idea i and building on it. Just looking at something, like an apple or a window and creating a story around it. Even if you tell yourself that the ideas you have aren't good, they are still something and building off something and revising it is a lot easier than coming up with something from scratch. Just take the first thing you see, and start making the story.
I'm experiencing the same. And i realized that I would be more effective as a teacher rather than a designer. I saw myself mentoring rather than implementing the design. You should still try practicing your personal style, but remember that you still have other options where you're going to be really good at.
Take a rest bud. And i mean a long vacation. It helped me with my thesis when i failed the 1st time. The 2nd try, i was more focused, motivated and by the grace of God, my work was so much better than the last failure. Everyone saw the improvement of my work.

Beautiful portfolio. Well focused, Just the right number of pieces, good consistency in style, and great verity in color, design and mood. And of course good skills. Congrats!
Hi Laura, I love your work. You have the touch of a singular artist, where your signature style is apparent in your work. I can see all Eras of cartoon stylization in your characters from the 1950's to the present time. Very impressive.
I'm a fresh graduate in Electronics Engineering but I've always struggled with it because I never wanted to pursue it let alone a passion. I've always wanted to take a course in the arts field but my parents were against it and now I am losing hope since I failed my licensure exam and dont know if I'll take it again or not but thanks to UA-cam for recommending me this video. Really interesting to see what's in an artist's portfolio. Love your backgrounds, environments, esp (that first jungle!). I can definitely see how you fit in with both Nickelodeon and Disney. Pistachio & rocky road. :)
Wow. Just wow. I can’t believe I just found your channel. I mean, my history as an artist is super similar to yours. Oddly enough, my first drawing I truly liked (and still like) is from Zelda. Anyway, I’m halfway through my university years and am currently looking forward to an internship. Also, I’m thinking of opening an instagram account to share the art I’ve done; if I ever do open it, hope you can see my art and tell me what you think. Greetings from Mexico. And Merry Christmas! :)
Your videos are so helpful, thanks so much! I was curious to ask you.. given your experience after these years in the field, what would you change about your old portfolio to technically submit it today? :)
Wow this is amazing! Your personal projects look so intriguing, and the layout of the portfolio is so clean. Very beautiful art thank you so much for sharing, this is really inspirational.
Laura, have you ever heard of the Disney background artist Ron Dias? I met him back in the 70's through a mutual friend, Mark Merlino, who was putting together the largest animation exhibit ever held on the West Coast. Mark was going to Cal Poly Pomona where he put together the show mostly by himself with occasional help from friends like me. Mark took me up to Disney to Ron's office and Ron was kind enough to show me around and talk about his work and style (how he was known for using pink and blue for his backgrounds). Ron was also known for dressing up as a very genuine looking Spock for Halloween. Mark worked for awhile for Chuck Jones. Mark gave me a tour of the Jones' Hollywood office (in the Capitol Records building?) and made a point to show me the little plaque on the door that read "Acme Inc. - We make fine acmes." I got to meet the legendary June Foray at her animation office and got a little tour there too. It was really weird hearing her talk because she voiced so many characters I'd watched since childhood. I kept thinking 'Who has the TV going?". I got little tours of Hanna-Barbera. Toured the offices where they were working on the Star Trek Animated Series. The offices of Ralph Bakshi. Jay Ward productions, and several more. Through Mark and ASIFA in Hollywood I met Osamu Tezuka creator of Tetsuwan Atomu, aka Astro Boy here in the US. It was my favorite cartoon in the 50's.
I have a question. I did my bachelor in 2D animation in Switzerland, but since a year I couldn't find a job. Is it now too late to get hired because of the huge year gap?
This is great! I just graduated with a degree in graphic design on the 8th! My Big Senior Art Class™ really put a heavy emphasis on the "physical portfolio". (We barely even talked about digital!) Is it considered standard to use an iPad or other tablet for portfolios nowadays?
Kinzichi thank you!! that’s awesome, congratulations! aha I always HEARD i would need a physical portfolio and I was told to bring one once (for the nick artist program interviews way back when) but then I saw other people interviewing who had ipads!! I was like ....that was an option?! and this was 4 years ago when I interviewed for that, so nowadays all digital just seems standard! when I did an informal interview at disney they just asked for a url for my artwork and I gave them my website and they looked at the portfolio on a computer!
Yeah, I figured. We figured out all of our printing and what to bring/how to present in my portfolio class, but the classes really didn't talk about digital. I'm glad to know that it's appropriate in a professional setting to show my portfolio on my ipad!
this is so inspiring! i have yet to make myself a portfolio because i don’t know what to make for it. thank u for this video, it’s very informative and helpful!
Thank you for showing us your portfolio! Now I have an idea of what I need to put in mine when I want to apply somewhere! Your the best are your art is amazing!

1) Amazing artwork, you are definitely an inspiration.
2) chocolate ice cream.
laura i just found you from your bob ross tutorial because it was in my recommendations and you're officially my favourite youtuber now... i wanted to be an animator for a really long time but that lifestyle was just so competitive and stressful i gave it up. in this short time that i've watched your videos, you already make me want to draw again T ^ T
Amazing work!
You just motivated me to want to focus more on the 2D aspect of animation! I’m currently in my last year of animation, and your channel has inspired me a lot! Love!
Keren kamu mbak Lulu, kamu memang menginspirasi.. cheer 😃👍
Yeag
WHEN SHE SAYS IT’S HARD TO LOOK AT IM LIKE😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭IT LOOKS FANTASTIC
Your vídeos are amazing! So inspiring! And I was thinking like... OMG, if she did it, maybe I could do it as well... then you show your OLD portfolio and O am like... “well, never mind” 😅
I can see the years of work and practice in these. Just amazing!
I love your artworks! You're so inspiring since my dream is to become an animator. Great videos!💙💙💙
There’s no way i will be ever be able to draw like that. What an excellent artist u r.
This is extremely beautiful, I ‘m so shocked ... thank you so much !!
"...i can see everything that is wrong whit it". Lady, you're a genius. I mean, people are learing all their life, but, wow, i have to say, you are a real good artist, and I really love your fantasy!
Is this work you created for assignments in college, or did you come up with the project ideas on your own and do them in your free time post-college? You are very talented and such an inspiration!
Beautiful portfolio. Well focused, Just the right number of pieces, good consistency in style, and great verity in color, design and mood. And of course good skills. Congrats!
It all looks amazing so when you say you can see flaws I'm like "oh... I need to improve" 😂
@Brian Storrs No sorry, I've never played any of the games.
Wow, your portfolio is so good, creativity overload
I love how David Dobrik-y the title and thumbnail are. Lol
HIGH PRAISE
Oh my god, I would love an entire video game world in your style. You are a wonderful artist.
no one:
me: "it's okay, i still have 9 years... right?" *sobs*
Because of you it made me want to pursue the dream that I've always wanted. Its going to be hard at first seeing I have no background in arts except for my crappy drawings in the past (havent drawn since 2014) but if I have the right mindset, I'm sure I'll work my way up. Thank you for the inspiration.
Oh God this acctually got me *INSPIRED* !! :D
My biggest dream is to work at Disney or Pixar somedaayyy!!!
And you're my biggest inspiratiooon!!! 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
You must have a blast every day at work. I can't imagine how fun it would be to be able to draw these things for work.
Hey Laura! I just wanna say that you are one of the best youtubers in all UA-cam, I love your videos and I want to work in animation to,lm love youuu from Bogotá, Colombia
thank you so much!!
I looooooove your style from four years ago and they look absolutely professional. Now I know again why I didn’t end up as an artist.
Oh my gosh that's incredible! I could never draw like that 😲
Crazy talent!
Your works are pretty.
It is no wonder you got hired by them.
I REALLY love your style!!
You applied with character designs for an animation job, is that correct?
- We make fine acmes."
I got to meet the legendary June Foray at her animation office and got a little tour there too.
Was all your art done digitally or on paper? I am new to your channel and new to digital art.
You are so gifted , disciplined and inspiring 😍
I have a question. I did my bachelor in 2D animation in Switzerland, but since a year I couldn't find a job. Is it now too late to get hired because of the huge year gap?
If u have a really good portfolio, then no.
Aaahh so inspiring! Thank you for sharing! Good luck for your job, Girl!
@@lulusketches That's awesome! My portfolio's kinda chunky so it'll be great to not have to lug it around everywhere haha! And thank you!
Is there anyone like me........WHO CANNOT PICK AN ICE CREAM FLAVOUR!!!???
Thank you for showing us your portfolio! Now I have an idea of what I need to put in mine when I want to apply somewhere! Your the best are your art is amazing!
When you say "painted" do you mean photoshop painted or literally acrylic painting?
I was wondering this same thing as well
Most definitely digital. If shes in animation, it wouldnt be traditional because most western studios are moving away from traditional and focusing on digital
I absolutely love your videos! I am currently working on building up my portfolio for when I graduate college next year! so this was very helpful, and gave me some encouragement to seek some new art styles! Thanks a lot!
Cookies and Cream, or Peanutbutter cups
two of my favs!
Disney should hire you ! you are super talented .. the characters are full of life and looks so much fun . i can't wait to see them in action
Hey! Each of the work is unique. I especially love how you do the environment designs. You're pretty skilled to do that. Congratulations on your new job! From this video of yours I've got some ideas on how to organise my portfolio. Thank you for sharing
I loved it!😍 Make a video showing your old work please!
i wanted to say thanks a lot for posting all those videos, it's pretty tough getting any input from someone in the animation industry online ^^
Yay you did a portfolio video! I love your work, your such an inspiration.
This is so inspiring and really neat to see. Im approaching my last semester in college, and I'm wanting to work in the industry after school, all more reason to see how I can construct my portfolio. Super helpful :DD
Hi Laura! New subscriber here! A few of my art school friends were discussing you (we also work at WDW but in the parks) and we go to UCF and USF and since I hadn't seen your channel before I have definitely been binge watching your videos! I would love to see an updated video of this since you said you can clearly see the changes you would make and would love to see a video describing those changes! That portfolio is stunning. Thank you so much!!!
Nice presentation Laura, never give up sister its good
I thought ur going to show ur cartoon Sketchs. But ur digital art work blew my mind ! 😮. awesome !
Hahahahha I was under the delusion that Disney might bat an eyelash at my application LOL NAH
This is so lovely! Even your old work looks great. I would also love to see what you current portfolio would look like if you have one.
This is cool of you to share. It gives me a good idea of what to aim for.
