      Yes especially since classism can go hand and hand with racism. That comment about not being white enough kind reminds from this one very wealthy family i knew growing up. They had an issue if there kids made the wrong kind of friends and I always got the the feeling this was non white as well as people that didn't have enough money. So like only the right kind of white people. So she definitely should have framed it as classism

    • @FeyPax

      That’s just it!! I was going to say yes she does have a point because I was also in the same boat in terms of growing up poor and never getting in with the middle upper class to rich kids and I bonded with those that were in the disadvantaged class and there is something MUCH needed to be said about that. But the racism.. that one touches a bit different. It’s one thing to say you have a foot in understanding what it’s like, I am white on my moms side and Romani and native on my dads so I understand feeling on the boarder of only slightly understanding xenophobia and racism, but I would most definitely admit that I nowhere near have experienced it as much as other People of Color and BIPOC have. It sounded like she made it all about herself when she really needed to add credit where credit is due.

    • @rexroy101
      @rexroy101 3 роки тому +2

      I think it's because racism and classism go together for a lot of people. So as she was making the post she probably thought" Oh someone is going to talk about race, I better talk about it here, so they don't think I didn't realize" but then she just did it poorly.

      Also not defending her but remember that the concept of whiteness has been very contextual remember at the start of the last century wealthy white institutions also discriminated against "ethnic" white people eg. Irish, Italian, Eastern Europeans and Jewish etc. were treated as others in addition to black, Asian, Hispanic/Latino and Indigenous/First Nations people. Still closer to power but not fully accepted by those on top.

    the rest of barrett’s message was good, but she had no reason to make it about herself. my parents are french immigrants and i’m therefore french, so i’m in a similar boat to barrett, but i’m still white. just because you’re from a different country doesn’t mean you’re a person of color. broadway is so incredibly racist and making yourself, a white woman, the victim is missing the entire point.

(tho I agree with your point about how she's literally been in two Broadway shows so her comment about not being wanted is odd LOL), but the fact she based it specifically around racism cause she has an Italian grandmother just comes across as a bit ignorant and, as you said, centering herself.

    • @wwozanewmusical
      @wwozanewmusical 3 роки тому +1

      She didn't say where her dad is from, except from the other side of the tracks, her father could be from somewhere else and its her mothers grandmother. But what she was saying about not being enough, think about it, you have actors and actresses who are white and who has much longer theatre credits than she does, and its due to them being "white" enough to be seen in other roles besides just the stereotypical angry lesbian or nerd that turns into a killer for her boyfriend. the two actresses who are white as white are Seria bogus, she is pout into and used for everything, Laura Osness, and The actress who was in Annastatia, and carrie revival and gets allot of attention and work in NYC. and other cautions can make other cautions feel that they are not white enough, just like there are african americans who are told they aren't black enough or are to light to be black. not everything is racist and being told to put others down, this is what has happened to her and if we are still going to say tell your own truth and be your truth, i'm sorry cautions are allowed to have and feel the way they are being treated in this industry as well. There is such a thing as not being used for more roles when your type cast and that is probably more to what she was meaning., But all this we should hate or cancel people open line especially twitter is really desisting. When POeter Pan live came out the actress who played her is the same actress who ws in sound of music live and wendy and in both musicals she looked really weird and really funky looking in how they made her up and such. but wen you see her in interviews she looks normal. every one has r is being attacked it doesn't matter if your white black or asian american, this is not going to go away by shaming and canceling people. we should all be happy and thankful that theatre was not and isn't being permanently destroyed due to Covid. so be happy we still have live theatre.

    The Chris McCarrell/TLT situation is so frustrating. To me it just smacks of Broadway elitism, that they couldn’t bear to at least acknowledge the silly little musical based on a very popular children’s/YA book. Is it the best musical ever? No of course not, but in a year when literally 4 musicals were eligible, you cannot tell me that there was nothing there that was worthy of recognition. Especially Chris McCarrell. It’s a blatant and pointed snub and it feels like they’re intentionally trying to alienate the younger fan base it caters to.

      You could make the claim that it's also quite ableist. 90% of the characters in the show have ADHD and Dyslexia. Literally, you have a musical that celebrates neurodivergent kids and portrays our reality really well (i have ADHD) and it didn't even get nominated. Chris did such an amazing job and it just reeks of Broadway elitism and ableism that he didn't even get nominated and they basically just gave the tony to Aaron tveit.

      I do think that the governors of the Tony's could have made an exception this year, but nominations and wins require a certain percentage of votes and it was pretty widely known that very few voting members saw TLT. Despite this, it seems like it should still have been eligible for Tonys. The fact that most Tony voters did not see it suggests to me that they had written it off without even giving it a chance, and the pandemic exposed their negligence. Either that or the way the Tonys structure the requirements for members to attend eligible shows is incompetently done. Unless I’ve missed some information that radically changes things, it just solidifies my impression that Broadway elitism was the reason this musical wasn’t nominated, but maybe in a slightly different way.

    i’m personally of the opinion that BWW likely meant that message on her insta story in a manner that was trying to highlight elitism and classism in broadway, but due to (likely) emotions in the moment, the phrasing ended up being a bit unintentionally offensive and a bit self-serving. based off of how she is otherwise (in interviews, etc), i personally doubt she would have intended to be offensive. if i turn out to be wrong with this, my sincerest apologies. but for now, i will recognize that she said something that ended up being poorly thought out and a bit undermining, if not a bit offensive. i will also give her the benefit of the doubt in her intentions. and over all, this at the least lets us all have a reminder to make sure to do our best to have self awareness when we are speaking on delicate issues.

    I think the thing about movie musicals is that it's a way to expose people to musicals when they otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity. In Rural places, you aren't going to get someone to drive over an hour to their nearest theater and drop $100 on a ticket if they have never seen a musical before. I know it's not the same. but it's not meant to be the same. I wasn't able to see shows growing up, but I had movie musicals. It made me love those musicals and I fell in love with the stage productions later. If I hadn't had that taste for it to begin with, I wouldn't have saved and driven an hour and a half to go to the theater.

She mentions her dad growing up poor & her nana being an immigrant... and yes that’s true and informs her identity but... that’s how a lot of middle class white kids are here. Ultimately BWW is a rich Broadway star, very fortunate, had voice lessons, and other immigrants and poor people will NEVER get the same opportunities she did.
      Not well worded at all, I agree with that. And lacking self awareness. She’s not wrong about who runs Broadway, but she’s not entirely different from them, either.

    I’m sorry but I have to agree with BWW here, I can’t comment on the American experience however in Australia - I’m considered a “wog” which was a derogatory slur used against people who came from country’s near the Mediterranean Sea (Italian, Greek, Serbian ect.), and yes, we very much grew up in a different culture and are treated differently than say our more “classically white” peers. This is in no way diminishing POC but I can fully understand her saying that she’s not white enough for the white kids.

      Yes, this is what came to mind when I found out about this controversy too! I've an Asian background, but even I've never truly related to the internet/American concept of white vs poc because the race/cultural segments I grew up with in Australia doesn't break down like that. Also don't know how it works in America, but as the Italian vs "White" discrimination has existed, I just also don't see how BWW is necessarily "offensive" even if perhaps inaccurate in US…?

    2:33 I think what makes the show interesting was that it is both about "being found" and about t"urning grief into a commodity". In other words I would say it is a story about how Evan is trying to be found the wrong way, but how it is only found at the very end after he explained with his mother. And that what is great about this show : it is manichean and is very complex.

    There wasn’t enough seats on the bus my class was on so me and a few other students had to go with the second graders. The five (I think) of us sat in a small corner of the theatre with our special needs teacher. The person in front of me kept moving their head the whole time, to a point where I could never see anything through the entire performance. When it came to go back to our school, not only did my small group get back to school earlier than the rest of our class, but the busses forgot one of the fourth grade classes and left them at the theatre before eventually picking them up.

      Ooooh, I can relate to this in a barely tangentially related way? I’m a person with an ~average~ body type but am *technically* obese by BMI standards. I’m conventionally attractive enough that I can’t remember ever specifically being made fun of for my looks, but I still have significant body image issues and struggle a lot with my weight and my appearance. However, I have friends who are more overweight and “less conventionally attractive” than I (of course I think they are absolutely gorgeous anyway) and so voicing these frustrations gets a little dicey sometimes. I have been made to feel in the past like I’m basically Not Ugly Enough to feel ugly, as if your actual appearance has anything to do with body dysmorphia problems.
      It’s complicated because I get how it could be insensitive to my friends (some of whom have been bullied for weight/looks in the past and may have been denied roles in theatre for the same reasons, etc etc) to complain about these issues when I have not faced the same kind of backlash and harassment they have. But at the same time, goddamn, my brain tells me some fucked up shit about my body, and I want to be able to vent about that.
      Perhaps BWW is in a similar situation... one where of course you may feel bad and want to discuss your feelings, but where your feelings are also not necessarily the most important or most harmed in the room. If that makes sense. I think the connection I’m making makes sense, lol

      @@MewsAdventure I hear you. Just the fact there are people suffered worse doesn't mean you got to feel fine. The pain is still there, how small it seems.

But that doesn't make you (or barrett) bad, when you do get to talk about injustice you face. I hope your friends can relate to your pain, instead of comparing it to theirs.
