This was my favorite tv documentary series growing up - I watched it so many times I wore out my vhs tapes. The series was the first time I saw Sylvie Guillem - Makarova introduced her as a new nineteen year old star on the show.
The narrator is saying that Danish ballet master Bournonville learned everything from the early French school of ballet, while French dancers were influenced by the virtuosic Italian school developed towards the end of the 19th century. She adds that French style nowadays is characterized by its elegance and very brilliant, precise technique. She finished saying that at the end of every class they bow as a way of showing respect towards the audience and their own profession.
I love how delicate and relaxed their arms are when they dance -- so elegant! This style kind of resembles the vagnova style but maybe I'm wrong about this? Sometimes I just can't quite distinguish the difference. It looks like they move a little faster than the Russians... not sure though
Love it as well, but it is quite different than what I am used to. I think the French school focusses a lot on musicality, more than Vaganova does. And it's quick, like Balanchine, and had the flow in the arms and upper body like Vaganova. I really like comparing styles, although every teacher brings something different, so you can't always put your finger on it.
Yes I think the French are lighter on their feet and maybe more eloquent. But the Russian have their strengths too. They are strong and exact and their training. Some of those girls with their vaganova training have extensions and strength that are hard to believe.
Bravo!!!
video on the Paris Opera Ballet. instructor speaking in French. narrator speaking in German. love it! hahaa back to the dancing..i wish i had been put into dance when i was younger. at almost 20, i think i'm a little late.
Aw, it's never too late...I'm sure there are adult ballet classes near you. But I know what you mean; I'd love to have gone pro - which *would* require early training.
@TheBallerina2000 Traditionally Repetto is worn as they supply for the Paris Opera Ballet's prima ballerinas, but other makers are being used more now (perhaps in part due to more internationally travelling dancers). However since this is an older video they are all probably supplied by Repetto xx
ok the girl u see right in front of the camera from 1:04 until 1:44 is really good, i mean they all are, but i couldn't take my eyes off of her.she is so talented!
Think about it a different way... I have friends who are naturally tiny although they eat very well and are very healthy. They are naturally very thin and they don't control that... They do eat hamburgers, and chocolate and treat themselves often, but they still maintain a slender frame.
I saw the Paris Opera Ballet perform Giselle at the Kennedy Center this summer. It was the first time they performed there in 10 years and Giselle and the prince were in their 40s!
@OtakunoOdoriko exactly. Plus, they genetically have that kind of body. They're chosen with thin complexion so they are naturally like that, so they don't have to starve or something.
The first piece that the pianist is playing is a Polonaise from the opera Onegin by Tchaikovsky. And when the girls do their jetes, that is from Don Quixote.
Haha people are saying they are too thin because they are use to seeing overweight people like americans. But these girls are perfect! Nothing wrong with not being fat. Oh and yeah I agree...I'd rather see a thin dancer than a fat or muscular one.
@DictatorIceCreamCone They are doing many tombes, pas de bourees, echappes, ballotes, pirouettes, releves, passes, and many, many, many others. The jumps that they do across the floor are called several different things depending on the syllabus, but two common names are saut de chat and grand pas de chat. The turns they do around in a circle are called pique turns en dedan. As to the difficulty of the steps, they are more or less advanced steps, though intermediate students would perform them
and Petipa is born at Marseille but he was more Russian than French when we talk about Matius Petipa we think more Tchaikovsky than a french composer , we talk about a Russian who is French
Excuse me, does anyone know any of the moves used in this video, especially when they're doing that bit across the floor? Also, the difficulty of the moves would be very much appreciated. Thank you!
@valenresh it's not pirouetting, they're piques...and I thought every ordinary ballet studio did that...at least all 5 of the dance studios I've been to always practice chaine turns and pique turns in circles.
@MsOMyGosh Actually, you can play music without talent. I have played many instruments without talent - just a lot of hard work - and have known others the same way. I still got many compliments on my playing. Like I said, lol, hard work can get you wherever you want to go, it just takes more work obviously. :)
@SpudxMuffinz It was a bad example hmmmm... What about music ? You have to have a certain feeling about it , without it you can't play it... It's difficult to explain.
I love how she calls them "mes enfants". There must a really great relationship between teachers and students.
I should say that was something more than beautiful! How they move their arms and legs! Wonderful!!!!

Thank you!
Every ballet class ends in Reverance
Very impressive
Wonderful! And she seems like a great teacher with fabulous, positive energy. Beautiful all round.
The french have such perfect feet when they go on pointe and long necks.
LIL RONNY G this is the result of a very strict selection at the entrance, based on very precise physical criteria
Miteki Kudo's hand movement in this video is so mesmerising.
The studio is freaking adorable.
This looks like a dream to be in that dance class💕

Strangest thing... I watched this and suddenly tears were running down my face...
Seeing that this comment was made 8 years ago... suddenly my tears start dropping as well my friend
BIGHIN GIULIO RENZO 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

They all have such lovely turn out.
they're so elegant!
The studio is beautiful.

Wonderful! How they are learning tempo and musicality. Great teacher.

I am so proud to be french on that moment !
I feel untalented by watching them :(
ok the girl u see right in front of the camera from 1:04 until 1:44 is really good, i mean they all are, but i couldn't take my eyes off of her.she is so talented!
wow theyre all so perfect!! i wish i could look as good as they do
wonderful teacher a lot of passion!!
Think about it a different way... I have friends who are naturally tiny although they eat very well and are very healthy. They are naturally very thin and they don't control that... They do eat hamburgers, and chocolate and treat themselves often, but they still maintain a slender frame.
Ugh everything is so quick that you can't enjoy their amazingness
Super reportage sur la danse ! Extraordinaire 👍
*It’s hard seeing people live out their dreams*
-Onegin, polonaise. Tchaikovsky.
-ballet music class.
-Le Corsarie, coda from pas de deux.
Maaan...I'm retiring
That was beautiful! :') They are great ballerinas! I hope I can become as good as they are someday!
I absolute her authority!!! That is the way to teach. Not sweet or politically correct or nice. Strong and resolute!
what a beautiful studio....
I saw the Paris Opera Ballet perform Giselle at the Kennedy Center this summer. It was the first time they performed there in 10 years and Giselle and the prince were in their 40s!
They must retire when they are 42.
@OtakunoOdoriko exactly. Plus, they genetically have that kind of body. They're chosen with thin complexion so they are naturally like that, so they don't have to starve or something.
Can someone tell the music in this video? Je l'adore!
The ballet dance is incredibly graceful and effortless here of course.
The first piece that the pianist is playing is a Polonaise from the opera Onegin by Tchaikovsky. And when the girls do their jetes, that is from Don Quixote.
The music for the turns is from Le Corsaire.
+silver_cupcake thanks!Merci beaucoup:)
I just understand "un, deux, trois"...
I was in Ballet one year 8 years old I hope return again.
Here style of ballet is very different but just as good😊
I love the dance they're doing; does anyone know what its from?
wow they dance so beautifully!
Haha people are saying they are too thin because they are use to seeing overweight people like americans. But these girls are perfect! Nothing wrong with not being fat. Oh and yeah I agree...I'd rather see a thin dancer than a fat or muscular one.
isn't it so crazy that we use the same music as them
BEAUTIFUL!

Captain Amelia Smollet (Treasure Planet) Used to be in The Paris Opera Ballet.
@Malon4Ever : Elles sont en 1ère division, donc jusqu'à 18 ans. C'était l'année 1985-1986 si je ne me trompe pas.
ohmygod. this makes my dancing look like an elephant trying to do water arobics.. :/
Do I see young Miteki Kudo? I think she is one of the girls in this video
this is so intimidating!
one of the girls looks like miteki kudo i think it may be!
very beautirful dance 😍😍😍

CAN YOU UPLOAD THIS WHOLE PROGRAMME? I used to have it VHS and literally wore it out. Thanks.
oh they are so beautiful.
Bournonville was not Danish. He was French and a follower of Noverre, but he lived and worked in Denmark.
And that's what people mean when they refer to him as Danish ballet master and choreographer.
and Petipa is born at Marseille but he was more Russian than French when we talk about Matius Petipa we think more Tchaikovsky than a french composer , we talk about a Russian who is French
I hope return again.
Excuse me, does anyone know any of the moves used in this video, especially when they're doing that bit across the floor? Also, the difficulty of the moves would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

So beutiful T_T I will never become that good, i don't even go to ballet cuz there are no ballet schools near!! I really want to dance!!
@MsOMyGosh Actually, you can play music without talent. I have played many instruments without talent - just a lot of hard work - and have known others the same way. I still got many compliments on my playing. Like I said, lol, hard work can get you wherever you want to go, it just takes more work obviously. :)

Aisling Cavanaugh It’s never too late. If you work hard,
you can be the best in the world
beautiful...
omg we use the same music and do the same part of class to the music!
@SpudxMuffinz It was a bad example hmmmm... What about music ? You have to have a certain feeling about it , without it you can't play it... It's difficult to explain.
Amazing Ecole del'Opera de Paris !! Thank you King Louis XIV for this gift to human civilization !!! ♡♡♡
two words: beautiful and crazy! XD
fantastic!
I saw miteki kudo
@MsOMyGosh Yes you can. You can write a history book or a text book just not a very good fiction story. :)
I love dancers of the POB [:
Does anybody know what that teacher's name? Thank you
Honestly this teacher seems a lot nicer than my American ballet teachers I had. But I could be wrong
wow! quel age ont-elles?
how old are they?
@Pandorasoul Actually, the teacher speaks french but the narrator doesn't speak french
the classes are so small--i like that :D
So there really is an opera school like Leap
