We think it was a complete success! You got an incredibly broad range of mixtures from such a simple palette. The use of larger brushes is something artists often don't try, but it really does help avoid excessive focus on small details. This is a good video for self-taught painters who doubt they can achieve sophisticated results with self-directed education!
Thanks Blick! Yes, that is one of the amazing things about limited palettes- they feel limited at first, but you can often get a surprisingly large range of colors! And I agree, big rushes are great for keeping things lose and focusing on big shapes :)
You seem to be a very gentle spirit so I think the lighting and expression made sense. This was nice. I watch a lot of youtube channels of various men and women and i usually dont notice myself noticing their eyes like i would in person. Your eyes stand out to me (in a good way) so I think that having them open in a self portrait would be cool too.
Thank you! It’s interesting you mention that - I often don’t paint the eyes with much detail because I find they can distract from the sense of light across the planes of the face. But it would be a good exercise to break from that, I’ll give it a try :)
@@christinakentart Yours just seem to stand out strongly against your face in a wonderful way. That is interesting, I have never heard that before. You just mean that the eyes grab the viewers attention in your opinion and so the viewer wouldn't pay as much attention to the light? I think the idea of the eyes being closed is nice too because it does sort of show a strong sense of serenity. Oh yay. I hope that if you try the eyes open that you get a result you are happy with :)
Christina, this is absolutely fantastic! Your limited palette definitely creates a specific moodiness that’s evocative and engaging. Bravo! So curious about two things: Is this paper for oils or a piece of linen? Also, how on earth do you get it to stay suspended in place like that?
Hi Erika, thanks! So glad you like the palette. The paper is Arches oil paper, have you used it before? I used a bit of museum putty to stick it to the board :)
@@christinakentart That is so clever! I have used Arches oil paper, but I’ve found it so frustrating to paint on because it seems to absorb my oil paint and cause a lot of drag. It’s interesting, though, because watching you paint, it doesn’t appear as though you have the same issues.
@@erikahalperin6842 Good point, I do notice that I use a lot more paint when I'm painting on Arches oil paper than on other surfaces. Maybe it doesn't impact my painting as much because I compensate for it by loading the brush with more paint?
This makes me want to draw a self portrait. I’ll be in the process of turning my new apartment into a multi artistic area and Oil painting would be one of the things i’d like to incorporate. any tips on a fresh beginner?
Oh, that’s amazing! So glad you feel inspired :) I’d recommend starting with a strong foundation, and then when you start painting, use a limited palette (red, yellow, blue, and white). And if you want to learn fast, paint small and paint often!

@@devernepersonal3636 Thank you! Yes exactly, the eyes grab the viewer's attention and it becomes harder to focus on the big shapes of the portrait.
It came out great !
It's nice to know you've conquered your fear of self portrait and to do a great job with highlights bringing out your true facial features 👍🏾 thanks!
Thanks! So glad you like it :)
@@christinakentart you're welcome
I really like it and it makes me envy to do the same exercice

This is lovely - I am interested to know if you paint yourself from a photo or looking in the mirror?
