- Hey how’s it going, today I am going to be talking about the Borderlands movie Twitter and how 99% of the promotional material is making the movie look even worse than it already has. The specific things I wanted to talk about today are these short character introduction videos and how they are nothing like the characters in the games. I do want to say this before I get into the video, In no way am I faulting the actors for these performances or the lines they have to say as they are not in control of any of that. I blame the writers of the movie and whoever made the decision to cast Kevin Hart as Roland, the people or at least most of the people behind this movie have never played the games and therefore can’t really understand the characters in the movie that they are writing, The way I'm gonna format this video is talk about one post and then put it in this good or bad list.
Kevin Hart doesn't play characters he plays himself he shouldn't play Roland the most serious character in Borderlands
Roland wasn't so stoic in BL1. He became that way out of necessity between BL1 and 2.

Tannis didn't say anything about fashion that I can remember, but she thinks that music is stupid, pointless and wasteful, so her being into fashion is contrary to her character IMO.
Same thing with Tina, she invited you to a tea party, hosted a tabletop session, took selfies with various team members, I'd say she is actually quite willing to make friends.
They should have hired people who actually played the games to write the movie

Her voiceline for failing the second You are cordially invited was: "Don't worry shawty, I still love you" which showed us that she valued the VHs as her friends

The problem then of course would be there is no movie. Anyone who has played Borderlands knows there is no new story there to tell with those characters at least. Maybe if there was a way edited version of the Borderlands 3 story with those characters instead, that would make for a better movie than the game we did get.
A borderlands movie wouldve been stupidly easy to make. Just keep the charm and crass humor of bl2 and it wouldve been golden. I swriously cant believe its not looking good so far

At this point the one thing I want to see borderlands do is stop focusing on the humor, it's gotten so much worse at this point and it's clear they don't have the talent to add humor correctly into this franchise anymore. It's too in your face and consistently injected into every little momment that happens in the games/story.

The closest thing that roland had to making a joke was when Handsome Jack fucking used his ECHO to tell you "Lets all go out for milkshakes"

The only thing that could be considered humorous about Roland was how awkward he was around Lilith because of their ex-partner status. But yeah, aside from that, he was one of the most level-headed straight-faced characters in Borderlands.
Actually kind of glad he died, because lord knows what they would do to his character in Borderlands 3 if he survived...

While Roland was definitely more serious in BL2, he cracked plenty of jokes in BL1.

Bro this isn't gonna be worth the storage of whatever system is holding the files for this movie. Just allocate the storage to mining BTC. It would make more profit.

they should have all been forced to complete bl1, bl2 and bl3 at least to get a feel for the dialog and story we expect
i really want to watch the film, but cant bring myself to give money to something that is trashing on the franchise

Whoever was in charge of casting the characters needs to be fired. They failed horribly.
This is having the Halo TV show effect…The writers and actors have no clue about what the game is about and proceed to make their own thing, being horrible in general. If what we saw from the borderlands movie is THIS bad…its certain the rest is trash..

@@declanthomas7159 The entire Claptrap VA situation is screwed up: BL1, BL2 and BLTPS Claptraps VA did his voice acting for free; in BL3 he finally wanted a NORMAL salary for VA and they declined. Instead, they hired a new VA which got exactly what the original VA wanted.
I mean the halo show was actually a success. Four million views per episode Across both seasons. Place another studio is going to pick it up

The biggest issue is Randy. He made it clear he is controlling everything, and when you watch his trailer breakdown it's clear he never understood the games.

I just wanted a movie that took inspiration from the games maybe using the comics as a script. They could've just skipped the first game and made the movie follow the four vault hunters that survive the train and end with a teaser for Gaige joining the crew to find Captain Scarlett, using the DLC as a sequel or TV series.
Wdym about the thing with the flying vehicles?
Stingrays were already a thing in the presequel. There are also hovercraft vehicles as early as the Hammerlock dlc in BL2. @@lordwunderbar7857
@@lordwunderbar7857 In Randy's trailer breakdown he talks about how they couldn't have flying vehicles in the games (Ignoring Buzzards exist) and boast that since they had more freedom (I'm assuming he means in terms of how players would be able to see behind the scenes and have the immersion broken) they came up with Stingrays (Ignoring they don't fly but hover thanks to Elpis' low gravity) for the movie.
I highly recommend watching his breakdown, it gives off so many red flags.
@@dpray96 ohhh gotcha, I had assumed the thing about flying vehicles was about for the players, even though in the movie as well the flying vehicles are used by the enemies like how they are in the game, so I think you’re more right about that. And for the thing with the stingrays, I admittedly don’t mind too much about them being used like this since I think the design for them here fits Atlas, BUT I definitely would appreciate if they maybe made mention that modified versions are used on Elpis to navigate it better because of the gravity

@@miciso666…which doesn’t make sense when you consider that he and Tina were captured by Hyperion and that (contrary to an old, long-debunked fan theory that he was her dad) there’s no confirmation that they ever saw each other while being held there.
Making Roland the comic relief killed it for me from the jump.
dear god every new borderlands thing just looks worse and worse i was fine with 3 as sure the story is bad, but the gunplay was sweet and the DLCs were pretty good, wonderlands was fine i guess the story was meh and the gameplay was also meh, then tales 2 came out and it was terrible, and now this
atleast you can see the direction this franchise is heading, here’s to hoping borderlands 4 will be better than the previous 3 entries
I just really hope they learn that they're not going to be able to relive Handsome Jack. Bl2 was the peak of the franchise, and no matter how hard they try, that story CANNOT be replicated. If they can make borderlands 4 a new borderlands game rather than another attempt at remaking 2 with more mechanics, then the franchise will be worth playing again.
Also, Wonderlands might've been honestly not a very good game, but it's wacky and you can't take that away from me

@@lemertoniii1452 honestly i loved the idea of the twins in concept, since instead of fighting a corporate dictator we fight a cult of maniacs, somewhat reminds me of andrew ryan and sofia lamb from bioshock , but they tried way too hard to make them funny like jack to the point in comes off as annoying
While I didn’t hate the twins, I understood what their goal was. They were poking fun at social media and how it can be abused to create an “army” so to speak. That’s all it was. I don’t know why people can’t see that. Troy and Tyreen were supposed to be idiots and annoying, and they were. They were spoiled social media asshats. To me they weren’t any more or less annoying than Jack at times, but Jack was funny and cruel in a different way. The audio logs you pick up at the beginning of BL2 detailing him boarding the train and having people killed are absolutely golden in their psychotic behavior. Troy and Tyreen have none of that, and they weren’t compelling, but they weren’t the worst bad guys ever. And the dlcs were a ton of fun in the end as well.
I also blame the casting scouts. They’ve missed the mark by miles. They’re not even close to the characters we have grown to love. I honestly think this will flop. And I’m going to contribute to it flopping by not going to watch it when it comes out. Only way big companies listen is if ‘fans’ don’t go watch it. But then again now a days they will blame the fans for not being ‘true fans’ it’ll be all our fault not theirs…

Randy is on record stating he made the choices for casting. While fanboying for Cate and Jack he told them he wanted to make a movie featuring them and got them for the Borderlands movie as soon as the chance happened.
The trailer that killed it for me is the one where tiny Tina says "I'm the only one who can open the vault". Like what the fuck, no you aren't? That has never been the case at any point in the entire history of the franchise, who the fuck decided that?

I will never understand the reason to do a live action movie instead of a nicely and well done animated movie? Literally. It makes no sense, Borderlands is well known for it's cartoon arty style. It's to the point of when you think Cell-Shading (Even if it's not actual cell-shading) It fits the game so well. I imagine the expense on having this giant actors in the movies must've been immense.
I can only assume Randy Pitchford wanted it done his way. He probably thought " We make hollywood movie! We have to have actors and overpriced actors!" Makes me think of "The Disaster Artist" where they are wondering why not shoot a scene in the alley right outside, instead of paying a ton of money to greenscreen the same alley, just for Tommy Wiseau to say " We make Hollywood movie!"
Edit: Forgot! But they didn't do an animated movie, despite animation being the biggest movie type! IT MAKES NO SENSE!

"Eridia" Eridium, Eridium is connected to the sirens... alright then this is not an adaptation, just a bland excuse for a space or apocalyptic movie with the borderlands franchise plastered in it.

@@lambda6145even though I’m not the biggest fan of Domino’s or Pizza Hut, I’d argue that even THEY would’ve been better for a tie-in due to the simple fact that we see Mad Moxxi’s pizza in the game (and it even gets used in one mission!), but we don’t ever see hamburgers in the game.

Idk. I like the later games every bit as much. Honestly I think 2 is kinda garbage late game. People hang on the nostalgia from that time in their life and overlook anything that's bad. In fact they praise it. Let's grind a raid boss for 200hrs to get a mediocre drop
@@stompingpeak2043 I like them too. There's work to be done in some aspects like story but I still like them. BL3 could even be fixed without actually changing much story, imo, but the game is still fun.
I just see a lot of BL content creators not do much outside of BL2. I don't see a lot of BLTPS or BL3 or Wonderlands, even with challenge runs, etc.

There isn't anything like Borderlands though. Sure, there are looter shooter games with elements like BL, but they aren't the same. I wasn't the biggest fan of 3 but I'd still like to see a 4th game turn the series around.

Guardians of the Galaxy proved this kind of humour could work (which is also probably the only reason this wea green lit) all they had to do was remake game with actors that look similar didnt even need to change the script much...

Honestly, the look and cast isn’t the major issues for me. The trailer/shorts' tone isn't giving off bl 1/2 tone. Into 1 and 2 had humor but also had some dark/serious themes, too. In these trailers, all i am getting haha lowbrow humor. Yes those types of humor is present in game, but not all the time.

I think you’re right, the way they are approaching the comedy is not gonna work well.
Let’s not forget that if Roland is in this movie, that means it has to be before Handsome Jack kills him, therefore it doesn’t make sense for Tanis to be old, Tiny Tina to have the rabbit ears, half of the cast such as Mordecai and Slab King not appearing, Mr. Togue and Grandma Torgue not appearing, Axton, Salvadore, Maya and Zer0 not appearing (as well as also not being the main cast) as well as other things that I have forgotten. If the movie is between BL1 and BL2, that would mean it’s in BLPre-Sequel or after, if it is after, they still need to explain what the hell Handsome Jack was doing if he is not the main villain of this movie, they will have to explain why Eridia was only heard about now (it’s because despite the fact that there are so many stories to pick from Borderlands, they had to pull something out of their dry well of imagination).
My verdict? The movie is gonna be either PG-13 or something like that, it’s gonna have some real bad jokes amidst good jokes, it’s probably gonna retcon 5 things or 2 and if they don’t tease a second movie where Handsome Jack appears in the end of the post credit scene, it’s probably because they believe that they can top one of the best Game Villains of All Time. Thank you

So glad the writers chose the super Mario Movie (1993) as their inspiration to make the borderlands film. Cast the wrong actors: check Butcher the tone: Check.
In all seriousness though we have almost 30 years of bad gaming movies to tell us this was a horrible idea from the outset.
This movie will be my girlfriends introduction to borderlands series and I'm scary. She wants to see the movie before playing borderlands 2 for soke reason

@carsoknight no I was just saying there were actors for the roles. But canonically Roland suffers from a chronic illness, and brick isn't necessary. And yea I would want to see Ryan Reynolds as handsome jack, but Personally 3D with the real VO's that canonically added to the story would have been my ideal setup. But ya know if they did blow the budget on great casting they could have focused on practical effects that would have fit perfectly in the aesthetics of the BL universe.
1 minute in and I already feel like you don't understand what the problem is or why its happening. The problem isn't that these actors or the writers haven't seen or played the game, they just don't like the game and want to change it for what they believe is the better. The problem with that is that they can do as they please. There's nothing stopping the writers from hating the original writing of the games and the actors hating the characters and wanting better representation. All of this, All of it is their idea of better and that's the real problem here. These actors are just as much at fault as the writers especially if they didn't study the source materiel but I know that's a lie. They have seen the source materiel and they just don't like it.
I have a easy fix for the move. Scrap this horrible looking rip off of borderlands and start again

Picking Krieg with two BL1 Vaulthunters was a bad choice Imo. There’s a decent likelihood that this movie may be in the “Boy, I wish they’d make an X movie… oh we don’t acknowledge that movie,” category of films like the Eragon movie that doesn’t exist.
The eragon movie that doesn't exist was my introduction to the franchise. I don't remember what the books are called off the top of my head but I did read the first one to see just how bad the movie was.
Imagine messing up an adaptation so badly that you make it impossible to do the sequels even if there were interested viewers.
Kriegs character needs two things to work
1. Extreme violence
2. Maya

I'm severely disappointed that they tossed out Brick (Brock Lesner is probably the closest in physique to Brick) and Mordecai. I remember seeing the initial teasers way back and my heart sank, especially over Brick. He was my main in BL1 (loved my constant berserk build, just punching everything to death).
And what'd they do to Tannis and Lilith? I'm replaying BL3 and while they definitely give off MILF energy, they're not THAT old. And if this is set anytime before 2, it makes even LESS sense. Hell, they probably could've cast Liliths *actual* VA, Martha Harms, to play her in live action. Nothing against the actors, but I hope this movie flops and gets the Morbius treatment.

The only thing I could save this movie right now is that if they made the ending be someone like Tina or Marcus just telling the story and the way the characters look are just how they view them. Idk

The issue with live action adaptations of video games (this goes all the way back to the Super Mario Bros Movie 1993) is that actors want to bring the characters that the writers create, to life, even if those characters already have a defined personality. The actors that were chosen probably don't want to get shoe horned into a roll that they can't be center stage. As a fan I can say that I wish they just poured the budget of this movie into another DLC or the next game.
Hoping Borderlands 4 doesn’t suck. The movie definitely is gonna suck.
In Hollywood, writers aren’t gamers most times, but if they have even one idea what the theme should be, they will do everything to follow it, including making all the characters crack a lot of jokes and losing out on their true backstory.
Conversely, a lot of gamers aren’t writers. We know the story and exactly how everything works because we’ve experienced it before. If there was a better team responsible for like, analyzing the story of these games as a franchise, let alone if they just had people on the team PLAY the game, there’d at least be a more solid baseline.

Idk they could've made it sick. The thing is Hollywood is in their movement and agenda crap. So they won't go over the top with the offensive or disgusting material. Instead you see every cast focus on inclusion or whatever else. A huge reason alot of people have stayed away from mainstream media/movies as a whole.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised to find out that Randy Pitchford greenlighted the movie specifically to screw over the BL1/2 Claptrap voice actor again, like he did in 3.
Tannis was maybe in her 30s and this daughter character feels like its supposed to be Angel. Roland should not be interacting with Tina because one of the dlc's in the second delt with Tina being upset and dealing with Roland dying. Seriously its obvious they didn't play the games
Does the writers of the movie even know someting about borderlands? cuz at this point this is gonna like the 2 movies of doom in the part that there is 0 fidelity and looks more like and fan project rather than a thousands of not million production.

A big thing that is going to hurt the movie us Jack Black and his current situation. They miscast almost everyone, Kevin is a great actor but he doesn't come across as an action star, Kate is also great but not for Lilith, Jamie is great for certain characters but not Tannis because Tannis was a scientist who used her smarts to help not to mention didn't really care about many people, the only good character is Krieg and Tiny Tina didn't have the bunny ears until the third game. It feels like they just took pieces the second and third game. I like Eli as a cheesy horror director but not as this comedy director. It feels like he never played the games

The fact they had Krieg and Tina, but Mordecai, Brick and Maya are nowhere in sight, is a worrying sign

They should have gotten a more suited black veteran...to play Roland. They don't have to be A list actors to do a decent job for Borderlands.
On the subject of Roland, he wasn't as stoic in 1, which the movie is taking place if Atlas is depicted as enemies. In 2, he isn't as light-hearted but he does have his moments where he doesn't properly greet or thank you and Lilith has to do it for him, to which he quickly apologizes and corrects himself and the way he (for lack of a better way of putting this) warmly says "Come on back. We may have found a way into the control core" when you get the upgrade for Claptrap. I don't expect the character of Ronald in the games to be someone who just never smiles since the events of BL. The casting is way off but we'll have to see if Roland's character isn't just Hart but trying to serious at times.
I'm not big into Borderlands 1 however that is good to hear that he was a bit more lighthearted in BL1
To be frank, Roland is actually decently cheerful in BL1. He stopped being as much in BL2 due to the New Haven incident mentioned in BL2.@@spowerade13

Even New Tales (which I personally liked, but it is pure humor) is more serious looking than this movie. As a Borderlands fan, I hate knowing that this is what people will think Borderlands is, instead of how the games are.
My guess now that the full trailer has released, Tiny Tina is the daughter of iridia considering there’s a throw away line in the final trailer where Tina says “I’m the key to opening the vault” or something along those lines. Pretty stupid if you ask me.
“Quirky” as a personality isn’t funny, it’s cringe. I strongly believe the scriptwriters missed that.

As predictable as it is I feel the only people I could think for Roland would be Keith David or Lance Reddick prior to his death. Maybe Michael B Jordan for a younger guy but if lilith and tanis are older than in game Roland needs to be as well
I will say for me personally, the idea that the story should’ve been 1 to 1 with the game is a bit silly to me. A respectful game adaptation doesn’t need to follow exactly the same story because games and movies are very different, and a lot of the story told within borderlands is through audio logs and radio chatter. The idea that taking liberties with the games and adding original things automatically makes it bad is ridiculous (to me at least). Something the fallout series nailed was the feeling of playing the game, and I think more game adaptations need to take that into account. The story can be different from the games, additions to the world should be encouraged to a safe degree, but the things that cannot be changed at all are the characters, the tone, the art direction, and contextualizing game-y aspects into natural fits for a movie that feels like an authentic translation rather than a replacement. I don’t mind the mixing up of the crew, but the problem is none of them seem to be characterized accurately except for Krieg, who’s the easiest to get right. Even with the characters I think the most liberties you can take are trying to explore their interactions with each other, characters interacting with others that we never got to see in the games, but they have to actually feel authentic to the characters. Another thing too is the PG-13 rating, I think an R rating is inherent for making a BL movie feel authentic, the action will barely be able to give off the feeling of playing the games now. And I don’t mean have scenes of POV action, but enemy dismemberment and the insane grenades and abilities tearing them apart would’ve felt authentic, and that’s not present here
This was a pretty good comment and I agreed with some of the points, I think that a better movie could've been something along the lines of a completely new vault hunter meeting the beloved characters from the games.

For more context with my idea that liberties should be encouraged, I mean that in a way where they’re thoughtful and fit well within what’s being adapted. The truck in the movie has a steering wheel that can shift positions between the left middle and right seat in the front, I think that’s fantastic and a really cool idea, same with tannis’ cleaning beam stick. But suggesting that tiny Tina is I guess somehow connected to the vaults, or making the vault key the size of an ice cream cone, those are not good additions or changes imo
Now all I wanna know is... Will there be BAD SONG IN HORRIBLE AWARD-WINNING MOVIE???!

I think I'll be passing on this movie, i knew from the get go this was going to be a ball drop for the established fanbase.

Honestly this Movie should've been an Anime or Animated Film and have the Original Voice Actors reprise their roles
They may have not been able to get Martha Harms to reprise Lilith due to her other work (she had to rerecord some lines for 7 Days to Die since she voices Trader Jen, and likely more for future updates). But the rest, I'm sure?

This movie seems to take place closer to the first game where Roland was a lot less serious.
Fun fact: you can still find pre release footage of the bloodshot dam in Borderlands 2 with the original Roland voice and personality.

The reason David Eddings (The original voice of Clap-trap) will never step back into the role is because David Eddings was actually choked out by Randy P the former CEO of Gearbox. He also oversaw the movies division and took over Eddings role. Originally Eddings was going to oversee the movie's but once he stepped down Randy took over the movie and media department after the whole USB debacle.
I'm still blaming the actors. They could have just... NOT agreed to running around acting like they're still in their 20's

It baffles that almost every single element seems completely off from the games despite Greaseball Pitchford being so invested in the whole thing. Then again, seeing the BL3 story direction, I shouldn't be surprised

Not sure if someone else mentioned in the intro Tiny Tina states Atlas is her father, I didn't watch much more after the first few scenes. Would've expected maybe Krieg being Tiny Tina's father, but if she did come to Pandora and her family is Atlas - I suspect the movie wasn't intended to be like the games, maybe alternate universe - but I wish somewhere they'd state it, because this doesn't reflect the games whatsoever.
One thing ik about this movie is it’s been trusted in the hands of people who have never done 1 play through of the first one let alone got to play through 2.5 😢and also if scooter and his hitch a ride don’t spawn your borderlands truck I’m gonna be pissed

They couldve just made a borderlands 2 movie and they wouldve had one of the biggest blockbusters of the year but instead they decided to just throw a bunch of random things from the games together. Now we will probably only ever have one borderlands movie and its going to be a dumpster fire
I’m not a hardcore Borderlands fan, but the small snippets of dialogue I’ve rewatched just breathes with personality and charm that these scenes sorely lack. Why the hell did they get Jack Black to voice claptrap? He’s a freakin’ robot! So he could’ve been voiced by his original voice actor.

There’s some interesting echo recording in the pre-sequel involving communications from the aliens to a human woman with some prophecy about her daughter. No mention of Eridia, because that is dumb.

This pop star/celebrity casting is HORRIBLE. I played all the borderlands games and own some merch, but i can't even pretend to like this. Wow.

Each year Borderlands falls further from grace. BL3 looked and played nice but the story was trash. TTWL was half decent on all fronts but was far too pc to count as an original crass borderlands spinoff. I don’t have to explain Tales 2. BL movie is taking the Halo show and putting it on a pedestal in comparison to how this movie is looking.
My cast choices:
Roland: The Rock, typical action hero. Keep him from joking on camera and that’s a solid character.
Lilith: I have no idea but she needs to not be 75. Maybe Sophie Turner, tho the Roland relationship with the Rock would be a massive age gap
Brick: Dave Bautista. Great actor, big muscle guy, just not as tall as Brick
Mordecai: only guy I can think of is Adrien Brody but I know he’s not the best choice.
Claptrap: THE ORIGINAL VO ACTOR
Tiny Tina: beats me but someone that looks like her would work.
Tannis: Hailee Steinfeld, with short hair. Same eyes so f it, it works.

I may have an answer for the "daughter of euridia." I don't think they mean it as a person. It may be that the sirens are a genetic byproduct of humans exposed to a form of eridium toxicity during pregnancy. Eridium is what charges the vaults and sirens are connected to the vaults. I could tell gearbox the entire siren story but the wouldn't listen. There is so much more to unpack with them especially in the game play area. Making them be able to locate certain hidden eridum cashes would be a unique feature. officially giving us a phase blast would definitely boost fun factor to lv 10. Amara was a huge ball drop for me. Loved the look and design but her abilities left much to be desired. I pretty much decided a long time ago I wasn't watching this movie. As an og borderlands fan I feel like it's just going to irritate me like a child who copy's another in a mocking way to troll them. I like most of the actors in the film but I can't believe gearbox hasn't pulled the plug. But then again they never cared much at all about what their consumers think.
Its also an incredibly stupid to make it live action rather than an animated movie in the art style of the games
