I saw Alien in the theater when it first came out, and not seeing what the xenomorph actually looked like until the end definitely added to the terror. Also, I thought it was going to be a regular sci-fi movie along the lines of Star Wars, but about halfway through it I realized I was actually watching my first sci-fi horror film. It really freaked me out, and it didn't help that it was dark outside by the time I left the theater.

Yeah... I didn't get to see this in the theaters even though I was exposed to all the promotional stuff from trailers to Starlog and Fangora magazines !... but I had to wait till it came out on the old 80's movie channels to finally see it and of course I had to sneak around to watch it while my parents were out because it was way too scary for 11 year old me ! But when I did... even though it intensely terrified me... I was also in awe of how great it was !
Recalling it now in fact I remember intensely wanting the 14-inch Alien doll from Kenner so that I could terrorize the neighborhood girl's Barbies LOL ! That's how pervasive this movie was back in 1979 !

The Anesidora found the flight recorder of the Nostromo. They then followed the flight path back to the planet and found the ship with the eggs which started the whole "Alien: Isolation" game.

This also fixes a minor plot hole of the movie Aliens as the signal from the alien ship apparently longer existed, but in AI, the crew of the Anisadora shut it off.

I've been entertained no end seeing young folks react so positively to a feature I saw in the theaters. Sadly, Alien and Aliens suffered from a string of dreadful sequels that ran our poor banana-headed friend into the ground. It took the only worthy third entry in the series, Alien: Isolation, to make the xenomorph scary again, and I've loved every minute of watching people squirm, scream, and squeal. Here's to the classics!

Loved your intelligent reaction to this classic. An interesting tale from the making. You mentioned during the chest-burst that you didn't remember that much blood. Ridley Scott did not tell the cast exactly what was going to happen during this scene so the shock on their faces was real!! Veronica Cartwright did not know she was going to be splattered with so much blood and you can tell by her disgust.
After this scene the cast members, especially Yaphet Kotto, seemed to take on a personal hatred of the xenomorph and again this comes through with his performance. a great pity that Scott has been hit and miss with his films in the last 20 years.
If you want to see a Scott film that looks better then 1982's Blade Runner is ridiculously beautiful.

The actor playing Ash was Sir Ian Holm, whom you could also know as Bilbo Baggins in LotR….

  • @gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954
    @gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954 Рік тому +9

There are a couple of subtle clues about Ash's true nature earlier in the movie, such as the times you either see him drinking white fluid or there is a glass of it near him. You think it is milk at the time, but it is actually the white transmission medium his systems need to function. There is also the scene when the crew members go out to investigate the alien derelict while Ash remains on the Nostromo, and when he is alone Ash starts jogging in a rapid and unusual manner on the spot, which you think at the time is a weird personal mannerism, possibly a stress induced response, or even a form of exercise regimen, but is actually a way the android can test some of its system functionality. He also barely shows any emotional reaction when confronted with events like Dallas' death, but reacts strongly when Parker moves to stab the Chestburster Stage Xenomorph with an item of cutlery.
The late, great Sir Ian Holm brought masterful skill to his performance of Ash as well, bringing a low level of continuous, oblique menace to the character even before the full reveal and the infamous, chilling monologue about the 'perfect organism'.

8:45...To be fair to Dallas if you were captain of a freighter and this happened, who would you listen to, the science officer or the third officer? A lot of reactors have accused Dallas of being misogynistic for ignoring Ripley's ideas, but since the film's script was written with the crew's gender unspecified and it wasn't settled until casting was finalised, this is clearly incorrect.

  • @snorpenbass4196
    @snorpenbass4196 Рік тому +20

A recurring theme of the Alien movies is that if everybody listened to Ripley to begin with, none of the horror would have happened. Which was actually fairly novel for horror movies at the time - usually, in the 70's, the women were the emotional, irrational characters who caused more problems. In Alien Ripley was the most professional. IIRC, the novelization mentions she's the freshest out of flight school of the bunch.

It's interesting how older sci-fi doesn't account for simple modern technology like the average 10000 lumen LED flashlights. Note not only is Ripley constantly overridden but the decision to land was mainly Ash’s, open the door was Ash’s, the decision not freeze him was Ash’s idea, Ash suddenly invents this tracking device that is extremely similar to company military technology.

But yes in the greater lore it us debated if Wayland knew about the xenomorphs or if any alien form was given top priority. Given how thd prequels, this film and Aliens goes yes members of the company knew and the ultimate end game is getting a xenomorph specimen and the specific order for Ash really confirms it.

13:23 The scene where Ripley starts to take action and command over Parker (Yaphet Kotto), was also a bit tense in reality, as the actor was really teasing her during the setup between shots and made her really mad. Weaver told, she was very young and frightened by this massive tall black guy who never showed any respect for her as actress. She didn‘t know that the director was staging all this to get a real and convincing response from her. Yes, in 1979 they were using strange methods…

I've heard Scott wanted to do that but that was more him than the original creator Dan O'Bannin, who Scott took over for. The studio heard about Scott's ending absolutely shut it down because it wouldn't have made any sense and even threatened to fire Scott as the film was nearly done.
I have heard the rumor that the studio only did this after the ending was shot and test audiences hated Scott's ending and the studio said change.
Either way interesting how films turn out.

Some comment is interesting for me to answer so sorry for spam but...😏It's interesting that you mentioned: "In both cases, it's interesting how the films are made".
The truth is that often times a large part of a specific film is created on the principle of Chaos. Chaos in the sense that it is a series of actions that were not planned in the first place but happened subsequently because of certain events during shooting process. If you know how the plot resolves Sarah Connor to start a new journey for T2 in an insane asylum, you will be amazed.
However, сontrary to my understanding, it was told to me that "Happiness is a matter of choice," and from that day my eyes never failed the dualism of infinity in the struggle of happiness against unhappiness.
However, I'm still disappointed, angry even, that Dan O'Bannin didn't make Resident Evil movies. Equally as disappointed and also angry that H.R. Giger was not included in Aliens 2 because at the same time
he was making Poltergeist II and again H.R. Giger was in controversy for his appearance in Alien:3. Like the fact that my spiritual brother, or father, whatever, HP Lovecraft didn't live long enough ,to this day ( if possible ) to continue creating his universe therefore I am a very disappointed too. So, to bad that for my personal choice it was the understanding that true values come at a price of pain, strength and discipline to prove yourself. So I am a very disappointed person. But I'm still of the opinion that Dan O'Bannin and H.R. Giger were more or less the real creators of Alien and because of that in their absence Prometheus and Covenant vas not Ok(some may like them but not me).
I love and respect Scott, he is a great creator and his Legend is a must watch for me several times a year (every year especially for New Years holidays), but without O'Bannin (the zombie lord) and HR Giger the Alien is not the same. But still his ending with Alien imitates Ellen Ripley voice will be very interesting to be seen. I will love to see because it will bring extra depth to the alien's character by revealing a mysterious intelligence behind his seemingly simple monster facade.🤗

    Some relevant trivia.
    1. Alien was filmed in Shepperton Studios in England. The Who recorded a performance of Won't Get Fooled Again in the adjacent sound stage during the same time. This performance can be found on UA-cam.
    2. When you watch this performance, note that the entire cast of Alien can be found in the front row watching The Who doing this song.
    3. The Who had a primitive laser show during the latter part of this song. Ridley Scott borrowed these lasers from The Who and used these lasers in the egg chamber part of the movie.....the so called "mist" that Kane describes.
I get a kick out of the fact that every female watching this film has the same comment about Ripley's panties!!!

Funny trivia: they had a very hard time with that scene. John Hurt (Kane) was lying with his torso hidden under the table, showing a fake chest piece. The guy under the table managing the baby burster with a stick couldn‘t get through the shirt so they had to cut it or weaken the texture by shallow cuts with a razor blade. They had some laughs then…. There is great video footage.

I've had Alien Isolation in my Steam backlog for quite awhile now. While a big fan of the franchise, I'm not the biggest fan of horror survival and to add the game mechanics which force the player to constantly put themselves into harms way is probably why I haven't installed and played it yet. Never been a fan of 'scripted events' which remove player agency. While the old Commodore64 version of Aliens is dated, there was just something about the game trying to recreate the film somewhat faithfully which makes me nostalgic. None of the recent Alien games seemed to capture that in favor of trying to rewrite the lore or add so much action that story becomes obsolete. I will say the very first AVP though was an interesting take with the same 'game' being seen through 3 different factions.

    • @bunnytailsREACTS

Yeah, the game does heavily rely on stealth but while there is danger all around, I wouldn't say that Ripley in this makes stupid decisions or anything. I suppose most games are constantly forcing you to be in dangerous situations though because they are centered around conflict and survival.
Anyway, it's a great game but not everyone's cup of tea. But since you already have it, it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. Or if you are still curious but don't want to play it, you can always see my playthrough. :D

Have never played the game,..never dreamed, and I didn't see it until years later, because it had an R rating, and I was underage, didn't know anybody who could take me or sneak me in, when it came out, but never dreamed it would have this staying power, and a game, a video game made about it, I find that amazing,..and awesome,..I was so terrified of the trailer they use to play,..and I swear, who ever controlled the tv spots was either diabolically genius, or it was just kismet, the spots, at the commercial breaks of what ever show, there would be this pause, complete silence, screen black, you almost couldn't tell if the trailer had started yet, until that dam pan out from an egg, cracked, with green light emanating from it, and a narrator saying that line, "In space no one can hear you scream", then the trailers would also have the sound of someone yelling, maybe Parker's voice, and the sound of someone most likely gasping for breath, then screaming horribly, which I realized when I finally saw the movie was Lambert being killed by the alien, and even then, it's not really shown, just the implication of what happens to her by that last shot of her you see,..and like you when I first saw this, years later on VHS, well my room was completely dark, and I was alone, and terrified, in my opinion Ridley Scott, is a roundabout student of Hitchcock, the suspense and build up of Lambert being killed, Dallas, Brett to me very Hitchcock, the crew themselves being isolated with this monster, but on top of that, individually being isolated, and cornered in their most vulnerable positions, most of all, unaware, even when they were aware of a danger lurking,..its brilliant, Ridley is very big on details, the set was really as big as you see,..corridors, ladders, the whole bit, Sigourney in a behind the scenes thing said she got lost at times, maybe when they were shooting the escape scenes, the dark, the smoke,..it looks disorienting,..I can imagine it felt like that in the game,..glad you watched, ..Godspeed, Peace ✌ q

After Parker died bravely charge the alien and fought with him hand-to-hand. In my book and eyes, he died as a Spartan. "My question is with Lambert what did the alien do to her we all see the tail it's just really odd "? I even looked at the director's cut even then they say they discuss that it might be sexual but nothing really concrete? P.S. You see the Alien in the corner there which scared Ripley. "See the Alien is just yawning and he found a place to sleep how would like it if someone was working over your head and disturbing you while you trying to sleep? I would be pissed too.

Go to 15:48 pause and go frame by frame (press dot key) until shoe comes in view. About three seconds later you will also see boots. Now go to the scene you mentioned at 18:31

When Bunny said 'It got that big already', it reminded me of something I always try to 'forget: That the speed of growth wasn't as important as the fact the alien gained mass without consuming anything to account for it.

@@terrylandess6072 Parker points out that the lights are out, the lights come on after they pass the door where the Alien is, and after Parker has tried and failed to fix it.
My take? The Alien was taking power to increase it's size, and it was bio-mechanical, as suggested in much of the publicity material at the time the film came out.

The devs of Alien Isolation had access to a bunch of material used in the movie thanks for Fox. They went to a lot of effort to make the game feel authentic to the movie, including the very low ceiling lol

I'll never forget how a friend had me come over to play Alien: Isolation. I think I spent 10 to 15 minutes in a locker, and it was still the beginning of the game! 😂

Don’t worry about us, just do your thing and when you post your next movie reaction, we’ll watch. Life is stressful enough without putting pressure on yourself. Peace.

Couldn't agree more. You have to do it your way and keep it fun or it will be a chore.
