  • Two of my favourite recordings of Liszt/Donizetti Lammermoor, an majestic and short operatic paraphrase. The first recording I encontered is by Hegedus, but these two are better in my opinion.
My all time favourite is kinda surprisingly a modern interpretation by Martha Filjak. It is modern but it has deviations to the score, such as in the ending which make it the most powerful executed, along with questionable changes such as around 4:54 where the third bass chord is a g natural instead of b double flat chord, and 5:56 largamente where the b flat major chord in both hands is played a b double flat for some reason. But her playing here is SOOO much more passionate, and sensitive then Hegedus and also Bolet with the most beautiful sounding trills I have seen. Her voicing is perfect and the dynamics are very very thought out and visible and the timing and all the rubato is wonderuflly placed with no sight of weirdly placements of either one of them. The unique opening in the first page in itself is the best played with its staccato and speed. Hegedus overall is wonderful but his touch is too hard for this piece and I can see Liszt’s intentions more here.

So surprising of the insane little amount of views it has for an incredibly professional non-live performance.
Bolet’s (1969 live) is my second favourite and is also a very powerful interpretation but Filjak’s magical touch is more appealing. I decided to include Bolet’s recording in this because I thought it would be worth it because he is such a wonderful Liszt pianist.
Recording: • (Jorge Bolet | 1969 | ... . I do not own the audio for any of them.
