  • I know this is slightly out of sequence but we thought we would show you the process. of taking our rig down in preparation for the repairs. Thanks to Niklas and the team at Doghouse marine who did a great job. I'm always asking questions when I'm down there and he always happy to chat and try and help out. If you are in Stockholm and need some rigging work done, I can highly recommend them.
    doghousemarine...
Like I said, this is not a how to but if I was thinking about doing this myself this video would give me a pretty good idea of the skills, tools and knowledge required. I hope it helps guys.

Chris: As always, each of your videos has some takeaway nuggets for my learning gold pan. So that's how spreaders are attached to the mast! And I must take a trip up our mast to be to understand what's up there. After pulling the mast down, did you see any issues with sheaves, corrosion or electrical connections? I imagine most boats don't get their mast off very often to allow close inspection.

The best advice when taking a mast of is.. and i feel dumb for pointing it out. It is always better to have 2 or 4 hands to much, ready to step in if a problem accurs. They have tried it many times, and they are 3 guys. So 4-5 people is not to many.
Far to many times have i seen guys at the dock, trying to pull a 15 meter mast down only two guys. They nearly always scratch the deck or the mast and the windex is a sure thing to bet on getting destroyed

Hi Chris, you should def. look into dismounting all halyards and ropes in the mast. Do this by running some thin, but still strong, line in the end off all ropes and the pull them through the mast. Take the ropes home, and wash them on a light program in a pillowcase. This makes them look like new, and takes salt out of them, making the last longer. In our local harbour in Copenhagen, it is not an option to leave the mast on, when getting on land. So this is a regular task for us every year 🙄 Doesn’t mean i wasn’t nervous when i did it for the first time on our Hanse this year though 🙂

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  4 роки тому +1

Hi Peter, can't blame you for being nervous. It must be a bit of a hassle taking the mast down every year but I guess you get to check all of the rig and do maintenance like that. Good idea with washing the ropes though, up here in Stockholm there is hardly any salt in the water so the sheets aren't really crusty at all. I will have a good look at them when we get access to the mast and see, maybe we do it anyway as it's a good opportunity. Thanks so much for the tip though, it's definitely a good one.

When I took my mast of the first winter I did it myself with my son and a dock-neighbour. Everythong went just fine but I tell you, it nearly gave me a heartattack... Since then I have choosen places that allow "mast on" at the winterstorage,

Hi Joakim, sound like quite a story. Yup it's a daunting process with a bigger boat and a lot of people go through it every year in a lot of marinas here in Stockholm. We will only be staying in Marinas where the mast can stay up. I will learn a lot with these guys though. Cheers

Always a tense moment as the mast comes off!
Having watched this through yourself you might be able to do most of the prep yourself next year. I was used to removing the running rigging and boom but I'd never taken the standing rigging off myself. 1st winter at Greifswald and the guys (super efficient) lifted the mast off onto trestles and then left me to remove the spreaders and stays. They were very helpful when they saw I had no idea how to get the spreader off - there is a concealed allen key at the tip that needs to be partially slacked to remove the cap.
A couple of other useful tips might be to use some padding between the mast and the headsail foil and to make sure this is tied down so that it is as straight as possible. I also pull any halyards or other lines that I have not removed through the mast so the shackles are at the mast head / entry point and all the loose rope is at the foot of the mast. You can then coil and bag this all into a plastic bag to stop it getting mildewed (if outside) or dusty (if inside). Just remember to pull them all back again at the start of the season though!
You should definitely have a go at getting up the mast. It isn't too bad as long as you don't look down! But like anything, best to practise in calm conditions first so you know what to expect.

Hi Stuart. Thanks for all the tips and tricks, very useful. Yes, the next time we have to take the rigging down, hopefully not soon, we will definitely do a lot of the preparation our selves.
And this is going to be the year where we both needs to go up the mast! Not so much a problem for Chris, but I am afraid of heights so thats another story:-) Take care, Chris & Tanja

Hi Chris, seems it went well. I will use them as well, changed my Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 36i to a 409 which I stored up at Herreäng Marina. I have as well a summer dock at Svinninge, I will ask them to do an inspection of my mast since I bought the boat in Helsinki and took it up with the mast. I also need to replace a missing halyard :-) dont ask me why. Cheers Johan

    Hi Chris,
I was wondering if you have bought the boat in Germany at the Hanse yard or via a dealer in Sweden?
I am looking to buy a Hanse 388 and would like to save some taxes by buying the boat directly in Germany. That would save me 6% 😉
