Some of the most underrated, lesser-known views on the island can be seen from the windows of this refurbished fire lookout tower. Originally being built in 1948, the fire lookout tower overlooking the Nimpkish Valley was manned every summer on top of Lookout Mountain for nearly 40 years until it was deleted from the fire protection system in 1987. The Woss Lookout and all other similar towers all across North America were manned every summer to keep an eye out for potential forest fires in the area. Following the improvement of technology and satellites, these were all slowly phased out of commission. The original Woss tower consisted of a high-rise box-like structure on top of stilts with a tent below for the hard working men to rest in. In 1950, the tower that stands today was built. The lookout is a wood-framed, two-story structure with a hip roof and cupola, and bands of windows on all four sides. With it's remaining classic green and white 1940's decor, this lookout was refurbished in 2014 after the Woss Residents’ Association proposed the rehabilitation of the tower and construction of an access trail to the site two years prior. This historic place, which is slowly becoming a more popular hike, consists of the lookout structure and many remaining artifacts associated with the lookouts use along the hike up. While the hike and the views are what most attract visitors to this historic landmark, it is always great to take the time to remember why it is there and think about those that took the time to man this station every summer to help keep the area safe.
