  • Harley Davidson Springers: They can be improved!
I have been meaning to tackle the handling of my springer forks on my chopper for months. It’s always been very heavy and tough to turn, and my buddy Ricky Bongo suggested the trail wasn’t enough, and some longer rockers would fix it up. Ricky makes springer rockers, so he sent me some +2” rockers for my front end. Not only do they add some trail to the bike, they also level the frame a bit, and they look cool as well. This was incredibly easy, and I look forward to better handling in Daytona!

I put 4 inch Ricky Bongo rockers on my chopper with a paughco springer and rode it from Minnesota to Arizona in 3 days... No issues at all with the front end... blew half a 3 inch primary belt off, not before it slapped me on the calf, though... but that is a whole nother story.

By changing the leverage on the pivot for the Springer, it's also making the spring rate effectively lighter.

Copy that. Good chance new springs will be in order.

@@whatyoumakeofit6635 Maybe, maybe not. If it rides nice, no reason to change it. If it's soft, change it up. No reason to mess with it if it isn't broken. That has yet to be determined. Chopper shit. LOL

My buddy is rebuilding a pan head chopper. I helped him rebuild his old springer front end. I made a new axel and spacers. Also new bushings in the rockers. Had to make a new top clamp from scratch because the orignal was missing. Finally putting my machinist skills to use on some cool shit! 😎🤣

I wish HD would release a springer deluxe. I would buy one the minute it shows up at the dealer.

Love your vids. For clarity, the problem before was too much trail ( wheel is trailing the neck pivot intersection with the road, same effect as a shopping trolley wheel). It's common when putting over forks on a stock frame as it lifts the neck higher and the intersection of the neck to the ground moves further forward. Moving wheel forward reduces the trail and makes the bike more nimble. Sports bikes run a trail of 3 to 3.5". Stock softails run 5 to 5.5". Hope that helps

IMO, that chopper is begging for an old school amber headlight. Badass scoot!

For a few bucks on CVP you can make that carb Badass. Custom needle , emulsion tube , lighter spring and accelerator pump nozzle . Makes the CV work great . Love it . Keep up the good work.

You blew your chance to do the "If some is good, a lot more oughta be better" trick and put 12-inch rockers like one of Sugar Bear's bike.

Back in my chopper riding days, when you built your own ridged chopper it was usually the only bike you had and you rode the livin' hell out of it. That meant on the two lane blacktop, the frigging freeway when you had to and up and down dirt roads in order to get to your camp site. Thank god there are still plenty of hearty dedicated men and women that truly understand the chopper lifestyle and what a chopper actually means and represents. These current $70.000.00 custom blinged out chopper looking Harley's are just soulless dressed up expensive toys playing the part of a chopper. Don't get me wrong here. there is nothing wrong with building a custom show bike but............build a chopper for the street and ride it. !....Don't ever say you cannot ride choppers for long distances or on the freeway. My 1952 Panhead with a 14" overstock front end rode all over and camped in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Utah and Texas for 22 years and there was nothing special about me. I was just one of the many Harley Chopper lovin' bikers of the times.

now the question is did you actually lose? I say no because you did build the bike yourself which a lot of bikers and people can't say they've actually have done...so no matter what you're still a winner because you put in the sweat and scratched up knuckles wrenching and building a chopper all of your own. If you bring the chopper which I hope you do I would like to take pics of it for you like I did brown sugar.
