It is true that this tradition does exist. However, I may say it does vary. In my personal experience as an Indo-Caribbean this gift isn't expected to be worn on the wedding day, in fact, it is given after the marriage ceremony is complete to ensure that the new wedded bride gets it and not to suffer embarrassment of asking for the gift to be returned if the wedding is not successful. In my culture, in hindu weddings, there are seven requests that the bride and groom can give to one another; though they are generic requests, they can be changed to suit the bride and groom. If the groom or bride refuses to vow to any of the requests, then the wedding does not proceed and ends. For this reason, all 16 adornments are gifted to the bride traditionally after the ceremony to wear daily. In today's day and age, all adornments aren't given due to the fact that in western society, we had to assimilate to become women of the working class and many of our traditional marital adornments were and still sexuallized, deemed inappropriate in working environments, and exoticized. Today, a specific necklace set accompanied by earrings is given and expected to be worn after the wedding to mark her as a new member of the family and a newly wed. This will be worn until the bride heads out back to work.
