"No sir, all THIRTEEN" is a moment that gets me excited no matter how many times I watch this episode. So well done to showcase a version of the Doctor we hadn't met yet. I can only imagine how that must have felt watching it on the day it premiered.
That only works if you've actually seen the Three Doctors, though. Most nu who fans probably haven't. I agree though, a fantastic nod to my personal favourite Doctor.
@@ozdocwho5177 Don't forget it also came up in The Five Doctors, though in that case it was Two criticizing the redecoration of the Brigadier's office.
What Ellie said about the moment with the 13 doctors was spot on. But she missed a word when describing it - glorious. And yes, murray take another up for elevating it further, but that moment was glorious Tom Baker's appearance? Who knows, who knows hehe
You’re killing me Ellie, I love the motorbike straight into the Tardis! It makes the inside feel really tangible and shows how comfortable Clara is with the Doctor. Plus he parks his Tardis in her flat all the time!!
It’s hard to understate how strong the chemistry was between the 3 Doctors when they were on screen together. One of my absolute favorite episodes, no doubt.
As soon as I saw Introducing John Hurt as The Doctor I knew we were in for a real treat😁 As for other Retro Ups and Downs how about The Pyramids of Mars? Another could be Genesis if the Daleks! Even as an 8 year old I understood the depth of that line "Do I have the right"
In and outside of Doctor Who I feel that the level of writing for Day of The Doctor rivals Breaking Bad/Wire quality TV writing. The way it's able to feel as much like the 10th, 11th and War Doctor's story (giving each a deep arc in this that also deeper contextualizes their (or 9's for WD' s) futures at once without ever feeling like just 11 & Friends is in a word.... FANTASTIC
I think you've got to do the two minisodes that went with the special, Night of the Doctor and The Last Day. I'll happily take them both as a single video of retro ups and downs.
@@MarkRogers-vf3evI think about that all the time. Or they could've had like a two second flash of Night of the Doctor when talking about the War Doctor's burden, to really solidify that the Time War really is the sole reason this incarnation of the Doctor exists, and why his burden is so heavy and why he was purposefully forgotten. It just could've better shown within the actual anniversary special that the War Doctor did nothing before of after serving in the Time War. But hey. I also just really would've liked to see my favourite Doctor in the anniversary special. Any chance for Eight to be in Doctor Who is a chance I'm rooting for.
I don’t care what anybody else says but John Hurt was the best British actor of their time. I remember seeing him first in a Frankenstein remake but then I saw him play John Merrick in The Elephant Man and I was forever sold on his acting ability. Nobody else had been so sensitive playing this very difficult role. May the fates protect his memory.
I actually think he may have really been the best dovmctor of all time, but we only saw him in this episode, really. It's such a shame. It would have been awesome to see a spin-off series with him. Lost opportunities.
Liked before the voiceover even started! This was a special treat on this special day. Ellie expressed all the things I've struggled to put into words in the eleven years since it aired. That's not nearly as easy as she makes it look, just riffing off-script like that. But you really feel the passion she has for the show. It's very familiar to me. And let's not forget the unenviable task Danny had, piecing this together into a logical order, because you know what was actually filmed was quite a bit longer, and by the way, I would pay good money to watch the unedited version. That would be a good way to spend Doctor Who Day. Thank you for this. Next Retro Ups and Downs: City of Death.
i'm pretty sure the doctor, who jumped into versaille on a horse, and is generally the most random/crazy person in the universe would love clara randomly biking in.
I had just gotten into Doctor Who maybe a year or two before the 50th anniversary. The fact that watching The Day of the Doctor made me feel so good, without having all the knowledge of the shows history is a sign of how well crafted an episode it was.
Too obvious a choice, but I would like to see "Silence in the library" and "Forest of the dead". They are favorites of mine, and it will include River Song!
I'm from Rome. For work, I have traveled the whole world. I have also lived in 6 different cities, in 4 different countries, across 3 different continents. I watched this in Milan, with a Greek Whovian flatmate, who was also away from home (she shrieked with glee when she saw me walking around the apartment with my "The Angels Have The Phone Box" T-shirt, and we bonded over Dr Who). At the time, I had been away from home for 8 years, and I was waiting to be transferred back to Rome. So when the "home, the long way around" speech hit, I started sobbing like a baby. 😭
I cannot even fathom how much pressure Moffat and everyone else was on to get this right, and they all hit it out of the ballpark. I loved and still love the episode (watched it today, as is required). I remember my jaw dropping when I heard Tom Baker's voice.
29:12 let’s give an “Up!” for the new high water mark from the explosions effects. Apparently the SAME GUY had been working on the show from 2005, and he just upped his game every year. Last I heard he was still on the crew for Jodie Whitaker, which might be only crew that made it through that many doctors?
If not into an inappropriate setting, definitely up the outside, as we saw in The Bells of St John. I've often wondered if that wasn't the same motorbike, gifted to Clara at the end of said episode.
@@gestaltdude I’d like to think it’s the same one. A lot of people complained about that scene but honestly I love how cool it made that bow tie look 😆 super fun scene!
I always assumed that The Curator was where the Fourth Doctor got his face from, he's just a man, like how Caecilius is where 12 got his face from. Caecilius still exists.
Excellent analysis (except the down (only for me personally, appropriately : I'd never heard of Gavin and Stacey)). Apparently Tom Baker spilt the beans about his appearance in the 50th on a radio program a bit before. Which I missed, so (personally) it was still a lovely surprise. To add to the editing up: it was great fun seeing it in the cinema in 3D and impressive that they didn't do the usual trick of absolutely everything popping out of the screen at you (possibly with the exception of the Doctor's seeing the fez - and probably others that I've forgotten (let me know)). I vaguely recall Moffat talking about that in an interview. The 3D version is (or was) available on blu-ray. Luckily, the disc also has a standard 2D version: I have the disc and a player, but no 3D display device; 3D is dead (yet again - hey ho). Elsewhere in the comments, people have noted with anguish the "my mum's Doctor was Tom Baker" comment. Well, *mine* was Jon Pertwee (I might have caught the end of Patrick Troughton: I forget). That makes me old, I suppose. Well, older than I was, at any rate. Keep up the good work (and sorry for the plethora of parentheses (which alliterates awesomely, don't you think?)). PS. Not all *actors* who played the Doctor at the time of the 50th were there: Hurndall did a First Doctor in one of the multi-Doctor anniversary specials after Hartnell had died. Picky point, I should stop now. But... PPS. Re. sonic screwdriver. Wasn't the line "what are you going to do - assemble a cabinet at them?" a nod back to what River Song said when she and the Doctor were facing up to the Silence? I'm sure Ellie will know. PPPS. This comment is far too long (and this doesn't help).
I have seen Gavin and Stacy, but I have never even picked up on the actress having been Stacy. I just think that Ellie was being way too picky. We all have our Foibles, though. Also, wasn't there a comment from Captain Jack about the sonic similar to that in his first story? There are so many nods in this story that you don't pick up on some of them.
Still one of my favourite ever Doctor Who episodes. Saw it in a packed cinema in Boston and have so many special memories - though The Curator's "I rather think you might" still gives me the most goosebumps. The audience's pin drop intake of breath before we'd even seen Tom was spectacular. Also, I've still got a 3D telly, and got to give a shout out to them filming it in 3D because it is even more jaw-droppingly gorgeous to watch in that format. Also, can we take a moment to look at the cinema box office on this ep too - It only had simulcast screenings yet it's total box office (more than £10m globally) meant it was quite literally the biggest thing at the box office in the world that day... and all from single screenings rather than dozens per day too! The Day of the Doctor?!?! D*** right it was! 😁
The neat continuity bow where the freezing of Gallifrey takes place and a aingle Dalek craft is thrown into space is a lovely touch too - presumably the 2005 emperor Dalek falling through space "crippled but alive". 🙂
I always felt like the fact that they got onto the Gallifrey was the callback. Like the Moment time locked the events and they assumed the Gallifrey is locked, so they never bother to check. It mirrors the door joke.
I was lucky enough to get to watch The Day of The Doctor in my local movie theater. It included an awesome introduction designed specifically for the theater audience. My favorite part was Strax admiring the way we torture our corn until it pops. I would have liked you to have at least mentioned this intro and I think it deserves its own up. Other than this one oversight, another great job!I am looking forward to more of these retro ups and downs.
The things the Dr has done to interfere with his companions lives? Riding a motorbike into his living room is totally fair. Bursting out of Rory's cake at his stag do and telling him Amy kissed him?! In front of ALL his mates?!
I'd like to see Retro Ups and Downs for episodes from Classic and New Era's. I was a child when Tom Baker was The Doctor. The Genesis of The Daleks would be a great episode. In New Who it would be good to see favouritte characters. 'Any Ideas'.
I still love Day - it's one of my top episodes ever. But Ellie, you missed an up! The prequel minisode with McGann giving him a regeneration and introducing the War Doctor. So very good.
Just rewatch the episode. It is always an adventure and so many great moments. Obviously the final scene if thr Doctors assembled, but also meeting The Curator. That always gets to me.
My suggestions for Retro Ups and Downs. Genesis of The Daleks Pyramids of Mars Trial of a Time Lord The Five Doctors Terror of the Autons Earthshock Just some ideas, there's plenty more. Banger video Ellie. Great job, I agree with it completely :)
The motorbike was able to be driven into the Tardis because it came out of the Tardis! The Bells of Saint John was the episode where The Doctor and Clara rode out of the Tardis on the motorbike! I loved that episode! 😂
I love the retro ups and downs idea! I was just thinking if you consider the tardis as a kind of vehicle for the doctor (asw as home and companion ofc), he is constantly sticking it in peoples living rooms so I dont blame clara too much for the motobike thing
I would suggest finding stories that are not the most well known for these retro reviews. "The Invisible Enemy" might be a good one, "The Sensorites", "Planet of the Daleks". Not the worst, not the best, likely to have a mix of ups and downs. Then do "Time Flight". If you did "Sub Rosa" for TrekCulture, you have to do "Time Flight" for WhoCulture eventually.
The Day of the Doctor is in my opinion is the best doctor who special. The chemistry between David Tennant, Matt Smith and John Hurt was fantastic and iconic.
The 8th Doctor told the Sisters of Karn that he needed to be a warrior or something like that. That filled in the gap between him and the 9th Doctor nicely. I also loved the War Doctor hoping his ears would be less prominent!
One of the things that is cool with this episode. It has a 3D version. For most people its a gimmick, but if you have the means to pipe this through a VR headset, it is spectacular when you see the paintings. And the flight of the TARDIS across London is great. It does a downside though, the “dream” sequence at the end with all the Doctors at the end comes off as extra flat after all the 3D sequences, and that’s unfortunate. And having Capaldi briefly there earlier and then not at the end seemed a bit odd to me at the time as well. I know they were trying to keep his look under wraps, but I thought that if you were going to include the attack eyebrows earlier, you should find a way to include them here. But I understand, spoilers/Easter Egg. But I mostly commented here just to mention about viewing this on a VR headset if you can get your hands on a version of it that way.. it really is spectacular. And it was an Easter Egg with the soldier the Doctor borrowed the gun from, he was in a webisode surrounding the special showing the last day of Arcadia and its fall. So it was neat to see him as a connector.
This episode brought me a bonus chunk of childhood, firmly within adulthood. To get this feeling back, I used to go to ChiqueGeeks channel to watch their reaction video, but they got content ID’d for that.
I think the Moment was really Rose/BADWOLF. She and the TARDIS went there to help her Doctor before they rescued him and killed all those Dalek. If you don’t understand what I mean ask and I will explain it.
Tom Baker's return . Pure Genius. He was my doctor, But Tennant is up there with him. Then you have the Legend John Hurt , who just by being in it suddenly upgrades it to another level. Fantastic special . Made even better by the short before it with Paul McGann Seriously pisses all over the 60th. That's 3 bang average episodes with a regeneration, Or should i say Bigeneration. ( give me strength)
13:30 international audience didn't have that issue, but I completely understand it. When the Doctor first meets the Ponds, they meet Olivia Coleman, later I saw her in Heartstopper. Polar opposites. I'm glad I didn't have The Crown or Gavin and Stacy to compare. Wonka was a lot
I couldnt agree more with your statement that the sonic saving the day is poor writing. You are also not alone in getting the unsure feeling of Osgood. I remember groaning in theaters when she needed an inhaler. Love the review.
I totally agree with your comments about Joanna Page as QE1 and Olivia Colman as QE2 in The Crown, Ellie. I love both of them but couldn’t take to these two portrayals.
It would have been...different, I think. Certainly would have really doubled down on how important Rose was to The Doctor learning to heal from the horrors of the Time War via seeing Nine go through the horrors of The Time War and be the one who did what Four couldn't bring himself to do so many years ago.
I'm sorry, not being able to accept an actress in a role because she's too well known in a different role or even simply for being too well known period is a you problem. It's not the actress's fault nor the show's. Now if you'd said you didn't enjoy her performance, that would have been different. It's a bit like saying you can't see David Tennant in any other role other than as the Doctor, even when he's pretty much brilliant in anything he's in. They're actors, playing lots of roles is what they do and most actors don't want to be typecast. 1 down for Ellie. Beside that niggle, your review was pretty spot on. And it's a credit to the episode for still delivering over 10 years on. 💙💙
When I first heard the great men quote I searched for which great scribe had written it. I was certain it was an old quote from someone who could really write, someone that had invented words.
Happy Doctor Who day 🥳🎉🎇🎆🎇 Love this special so much Everything flowed so well within this. You did not want it to end. Ellie, I can relate. Tom Baker was my mom, and my grandma's favorite Doctor. She absolutely loved his performance during his run, and being a part of this gem. This special impacts me in a different way this time around. My mom sadly passed away in July. My grandma passed in late 2008. Every Doctor Who Day. I would watch with my parents, their favorite episodes. My dad also passed away this year. My dad also loved Doctor Who. His favorite? #10 David Tennant. Oh but he also enjoyed Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, Jodie Whitaker, and Ncuti as well. My mom did too, she loved every Doctor. But David was that special one, delivered so much heart, feels and every emotion possible. As does Ncuti, even more powerful, and with a heart that is a treasure Doctor Who has been a part of my life. And thankful to share my memories. Lots of love to the entire Whovian fam 🫶 Timey Wimey Wibbly Wobbly ❤️ Forever and always
I’m sorry you feel that way about the acting choice for Queen Elizabeth I, but giving the episode a down for something that is very much a “You Problem” is a bit much. I often have the same issue with actors and VAs I recognize from other shows and movies, but if I let it bug me for more than a few seconds, I’d never enjoy anything new! Imagine not liking Good Omens because David Tennant plays Crowley? It’d drive me mad!
Ellie, did you miss it? The riding the Motorbike into the Tardis was a reference to the TV movie, when the Policeofficerdrove into the Tardis ;) At least thats my headcanon
12:01 You give these examples of famous actor casting and not being able to extract their previous roles. But look at Tennant. He had numerous famous and iconic roles behind him but almost instantly fit the doctor role so well.
Do it right start a regular ups and downs series for classic who with An Unearthly child. plus it's first couple episodes that form the first story in total. On that train of thought first and final episodes of each doctor's main run are solid choices.
You guys should be Retro Ups and & Downs for the following: Midnight The Eleventh Hour Love and Monsters Rose The Stolen Earth/Journey's End The Husbands of River Song Heaven Sent The Name of the Doctor Blink
Since the power of the Doctor and the introduction of the "Guardians of the edge" I see the final scene of Day of the Doctor as a flash forward to after 11 regenerated and he is joining the others at the edge.
The bike: It's the same one the Doctor says he rode in the anti-gravity Olympics in 'The Bells of St John'... so presumably the Doctor brought it out through the Console Room.
Couple more things, the special with Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester Mc Coy was hilarious. I have watched the 50th anniversary loads of times . i have watched the 60th once when it firsted aired that's it. That my friend speaks volumes.
Check out the BTS stuff for the movie "Oblivion", with Tom Cruise, where they first used that "surround" background screen technique around the base sky tower set. Pretty interesting...

The reason why Clara rode into the Tardis on her bike is because the special was filmed in 3D and that was a great effect!

My favorite line from this special? “Same software, different case.” It manages to sum up the Doctor through the analogy of the sonic.
Yes and no, but they still have different personalities, they just share memories. Different software, same storage.

Hurt's Caligula, Jacobi's Claudius and Phillip's Livia are three of the most magnificently performed roles of all time imo
I love the loop that war doc sees the moment and then 9 recognised rose who opened the TARDIS and connected to time/space and the moment
For me the biggest missed opportunity with the opening I wished it had Ian Chesterton working in Clara's school as an older teacher.
This was the 50th anniversary, and teachers tend to retire at 60. Now take a closer look at the school nameboard.
3:42 I watched this in 3D in a theater. This was even more breathtaking.
This is such a good idea. Nice to have something Doctor Who related that’s not just rumors and listicles.
Just rewatch the episode. It is always an adventure and so many great moments. Obviously the final scene if thr Doctors assembled, but also meeting The Curator. That always gets to me.
My suggestions for Retro Ups and Downs.
Genesis of The Daleks
Pyramids of Mars
Trial of a Time Lord
The Five Doctors
Terror of the Autons
Earthshock
Just some ideas, there's plenty more. Banger video Ellie. Great job, I agree with it completely :)
How did David Tennant’s line “I’m not English” not get an Up? That was so brilliant 😂
One my favourite modern Dr Who episodes.
Seeing Ellie so giddy and excited about a video always adds that bit extra
30:44 Baker is definitely a crocs fan. Stood out to me when I saw him at a convention on Long Island a couple months ago
Every time you talk about nostalgia, you make me feel so old 😭 I was adulting when you were a teen!
You should do a retro-review of the last 3 episodes of season 3. The whole Harold Saxon / Prime Minister / The Master payoff for that season.
2:10, to be honest.
11 would totally do something like that.
12 does it several times as well!
Day of the Doctor is one of the few specials that *feel* like a special
I think the Moment was really Rose/BADWOLF. She and the TARDIS went there to help her Doctor before they rescued him and killed all those Dalek. If you don’t understand what I mean ask and I will explain it.
Tom Baker's return . Pure Genius. He was my doctor, But Tennant is up there with him.
Then you have the Legend John Hurt , who just by being in it suddenly upgrades it to another level.
Fantastic special . Made even better by the short before it with Paul McGann
Seriously pisses all over the 60th.
Loved this, thank you, it is still one of my all time favourites The Day of the Doctor is simply superb
I love Osgood. I also like her needing an inhaler personally as i am an asthmatic & its nice seeing a cool character need one too.
Do you think an alternate version with Christopher Eccleston in place of John Hurt would have been better, worse, or the same?
I don't think it would be better to replace John Hurt, but it would have been an added bonus.
It would have been...different, I think. Certainly would have really doubled down on how important Rose was to The Doctor learning to heal from the horrors of the Time War via seeing Nine go through the horrors of The Time War and be the one who did what Four couldn't bring himself to do so many years ago.
Ellie, I am with you on associating actors with other projects. I laughed my head off when Lee Mack's character in "Kerblam!" was killed off.
Congrats Ellie! It only took you 11 years to figure out that the sequence where he talks about dreams is a dream sequence :D
The doctor has brought his mode of transportation into Clara’s living room on several occasions
An unearthly child is a must. There's no more retro episode than the first one
When I first heard the great men quote I searched for which great scribe had written it. I was certain it was an old quote from someone who could really write, someone that had invented words.
Happy Doctor Who day 🥳🎉🎇🎆🎇
Love this special so much
Everything flowed so well within this.
As does Ncuti, even more powerful, and with a heart that is a treasure
Doctor Who has been a part of my life. And thankful to share my memories.
Lots of love to the entire Whovian fam 🫶
Timey Wimey Wibbly Wobbly ❤️
Forever and always
I’m sorry you feel that way about the acting choice for Queen Elizabeth I, but giving the episode a down for something that is very much a “You Problem” is a bit much. I often have the same issue with actors and VAs I recognize from other shows and movies, but if I let it bug me for more than a few seconds, I’d never enjoy anything new! Imagine not liking Good Omens because David Tennant plays Crowley? It’d drive me mad!
Ellie, did you miss it? The riding the Motorbike into the Tardis was a reference to the TV movie, when the Policeofficerdrove into the Tardis ;)
At least thats my headcanon
I also like to think that.
You guys should be Retro Ups and & Downs for the following:
Midnight
The Eleventh Hour
Love and Monsters
Rose
The Stolen Earth/Journey's End
The Husbands of River Song
Heaven Sent
The Name of the Doctor
Blink
You should do the 5 doctors and Vincent and the doctor.
Vincent and the Doctor is a heartbreaking episode.
Since the power of the Doctor and the introduction of the "Guardians of the edge" I see the final scene of Day of the Doctor as a flash forward to after 11 regenerated and he is joining the others at the edge.
The bike: It's the same one the Doctor says he rode in the anti-gravity Olympics in 'The Bells of St John'... so presumably the Doctor brought it out through the Console Room.
such a brilliant idea! love it
Couple more things,
the special with Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester Mc Coy was hilarious.
I have watched the 50th anniversary loads of times . i have watched the 60th once when it firsted aired that's it.
That my friend speaks volumes.
They should hire Moffatt for ST Section 31, they need rediculously complex tangled story lines and he is the GOAT
If retro ups and downs can include classic Who, I'd love one of City of Death.
I get the motorcycle thing but we have to remember, the Doctor always lands his tardis in Ruby's living room
joanne paige was also in nativity 2 with david tennant she plays mrs. peterson
I loved your reaction on this episode.
The Day Of The Doctor is waaaaaay better than the 3 60th specials together 😂😂😂
I 100 percent agree with you on that
I always thought Tom Bakers Tardis was the museum where they had there conversation
20:25 Osgood had the inhaler so that the xygon could demand it. Maybe drop some stammering and the glasses
I still wish that between Smith and capalidi we had a year of 4 specials around the war dr.
I 100 percent agree with you on that
Check out the BTS stuff for the movie "Oblivion", with Tom Cruise, where they first used that "surround" background screen technique around the base sky tower set. Pretty interesting...
This instalment really shows The Power of the Doctor how to do decent fan service.
The Doctor always has his vehicle in his companions living rooms.
Waking up to Ellie. This is gonna be a nice day.
We watched it in a cinema and the crowd went wild when Baker turned up
Retro is necessary. Currently we're living a DW vacuum with nothing new to talk about...
like DW magazine in the wilderness years
