How do you FINISH your pitch??

  • Today let's go over our FOLLOW THROUGH. The way we finish our pitch is so important in a pitch's success! Follow the 3 L's and you'll be moving in a good direction!
    This was a new follow-through for me that I didn't learn until after I was finished pitching in college. And I wish it was something I had learned sooner. It would've saved me a lot of walks and a lot of shoulder stiffness.

    A video on the two methods would be great! I would definitely like to see a video on the difference between the two follow throughs. Are they the "hello elbow" and "whip?" What are the pros and cons; set up for learning other pitches, more or less wear and tear on the elbow, etc? FOLLOW THROUGH!

      This is a great suggestion. In my minds eye, the difference is about power, pure power. HE is like a catapult that can chuck a rock a couple hundred feet, the other method is like a trebuchet which can hurl that same rock over a thousand feet. No top level pitcher uses HE

      I disagree with this follow thru- for young pitchers it’s creating bad habits of release points. Also - you lose momentum from your snap. Your speed will drop from the turn over. I literally throw my changeup this way and I slide my curve this way. Both slower pitches.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I’ve seen improvement in my pitchers consistency and velocity upon adopting this approach, but as you point out… every pitcher is different! I share what works for me and my pitchers on this channel!

    Great video! Follow Through. This validates a lesson that I have with one of my students. Her dad saw the old follow through and questioned me on it. I had a little back up on it, but this video explains it better than I did, so I'll probably show it to him.

    I would love to know the difference in your thoughts. I just watched your “wrist snap” video which is how I was taught and how I’ve always coached other girls…. But everyone is on the “whip” now and it just doesn’t make sense to me 100%. So I’m glad to see it’s not just totally obsolete now but makes me feel like i don’t know what I’m even talking about even though it makes total sense to me! I came up through early 2000s and graduated high school in 2009 before social media and UA-cam videos were flooded with info & tips for softball. But I’ve always taught the elbow up follow through and it always made sense to me also. I’ll keep watching your videos ! Thanks!

      I was also taught the elbow up follow-through! Since coaching, I’ve transitioned to this longer and lower follow-through and I can see that it feels really natural once it clicks. I can see how it helps with speed and accuracy. And I understand your feelings on wrist snap… I try to blend the wrist snap into the whip that people teach because I think both are important. In the past I’ve seen girls try to whip and not get any spin on the ball at all or a totally sideways spin. But once they learned how to use their fingers to snap the ball they’ve made big improvements. I suggest experimenting with some of the things you learn online, but make it your own! See what works for you and your pitchers (and make sure you come back and share!!) 😊🥎

    Do you use brushing technique?

    • @plusultrapitching
      @plusultrapitching  8 місяців тому

      Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to watch. I’m not familiar with the brushing technique by name, can you please explain what this technique refers to? 😊🥎

    • @injnyr
      @injnyr 7 місяців тому +1

      What they meant by brushing was if you slightly graze or "brush" your elbow at the hip, which decelerates the upper arm against the body, internally rotates the arm, which then accelerates the lower arm and encourages the arm turning over and finishing palm down. All while maintaining your 3 Ls!

    • @plusultrapitching
      @plusultrapitching  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for the explanation! I do not teach the brushing technique, but I have seen many other coaches teach it and find success!

    Great video. Surprised you were so kind to the HE world.
    One thing though. You missed the mark with the last "L" which involves keeping the arm low.
    Follow throughs involve letting the arm go where it wants to go due to the physics acting on the arm, not from any conscious muscle action.
    If you apply any muscle action to affect the arm movement in the follow through, the muscles begin to fire earlier than you might think, earlier than release. Which is bad.
    So letting the arm stay long is good, because you're doing nothing.
    Letting the arm stay loose is good, because you're doing nothing.
    But FORCING the arm to stay low is bad, because you're actively using muscles to control the arm.
    Now regarding the actual finish position of the arm, it may very well finish low given the magnitude and direction of the forces acting on it. But the key is it would get there on its own not by conscious control.
    However, if a pitcher is thinking about keeping it low, she will undoubtedly apply some muscle force to do that, and that would be bad.
    Good follow throughs are about doing nothing, absolutely nothing (like a Seinfeld episode).
    Your three "L"s should be:
    Let the arm stay long
    Let the arm go loose.
    Let the arm go wherever it goes

    My pitcher is doing your pitch. Why is hers loopy like at the batters forehead?

    • @plusultrapitching
      @plusultrapitching  6 місяців тому

      If by loopy you mean that the pitches are too high, she may be releasing the ball too late, following through too high, or her shoulders may be angled upward while she’s snapping. I hope this helps! 🥎
