    Have you ever ordered lumber or other building materials for home delivery? Who did you buy from, and how was your experience?

      We ordered enough wood from Lowe’s for to build 3 decks and the “T” type wood to replace bad siding on our garage. It was a nightmare from A to Z. Most of the wood seemed fine at delivery, but our problem was with the delivery company. They kept promising to deliver at a certain time so we cleared our schedules only to have them cancel at the last minute. Finally at close to 11 PM in torrential rains, they made their appearance. We were about ready to go to bed when lo and behold there they were. We told them it was late and to come back because we didn’t want them to wake the neighbors. They said if we cancel then they will note that we refused delivery and we would have to pick up our own wood. Their huge diesel truck woke up half the neighborhood by this point so we accepted delivery. Big mistake. They had to use some big Bertha type forklift and they backed up onto our side yard lawn when returning to the truck after dropping the final pallet of wood. They got stuck in the lawn because it had been raining extremely heavily all day and their forklift was super heavy. The driver tried to rock the forklift to get unstuck but the big forklift just sunk deeper and deeper. Finally the hydraulic hose ruptured and the driver just abandoned the forklift in our backyard since it was raining so hard. They were supposed to come back the next day with a big tow truck to winch it out of the new pit in our lawn. They never showed up. After a month of raising hell they finally decided to remove their massive forklift. We could not build our decks until this beast was gone. They promised to do hazmat cleanup for the hydraulic fluid that leaked and pay for a professional landscaper to fill in the deep pits in our yard and put new sod. That was in 2017 and we had to do the hazmat and repair the ruts ourselves. We considered a lawsuit but Lowe’s blamed the delivery service and the delivery service blamed the contractor they hired. We were never compensated for the repair, but while waiting for the beast to be moved, much of the wood became warped and one pallet had hydraulic fluid all over it, especially the “T” paneling. We had to rent a UHaul to take most of this wood back. It was either that or Lowe’s was going to send this incompetent delivery service pick up the pallets of wood They tried to refuse the bad wood for refund until we showed them the photos of the beast and the hydraulic fluid and the new muddy pit in our side yard. Never again will I order a wood delivery from Lowe’s. If we need a board or two we will just get one and stand in line since our options are limited but never again Lowe’s.

      Tammy M that is a story worthy of a movie. That’s like Meet The Parents. Wow! I guess I got off easy. A lot of the wood has warped since, unfortunately. I think the problem is the lumber made today is just total junk from sapwood. That’s one of the negatives of environmentalism. It used to be we would clear cut forests (obviously terrible), but you’d get great hardwood. Now we plant trees specifically for lumber (much better for the environment), but it is culled as early as possible and we get crummy, soft sapwood. I keep telling myself they’re just garden beds and it’ll work fine.

    This is not a new concept. They will not remember you next time you order because different people load every time. I *always* hand pick my lumber. This is how they get rid of the crap that everyone does not want. The next order will certainly get the crap you sent back. Guaranteed! I have bought certain things like potting soil half price if the bag is broken! I don't know if they can return any crap lumber they received to their distributor but it is easier to give to "non commercial" customers. $59.00 are you kidding? It is $79.00 here in Florida. I asked one time and the clerk said, " if you order a screw driver delivered, it is $79.00.I went out and bought a pickup. LOL

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  4 роки тому

      I agree on most points. I guess delivery here is a deal? $59 for $800 worth of lumber and concrete seemed like a no-brainer to me, but it would be nice if they advertised the "pick in store and we'll deliver" concept. Live and learn. The pick-up truck is impractical to me. I can't justify spending that kind of money for one load of lumber. Besides, many of the boards were 12' in length and won't fit in a typical pick-up safely.

    • @CorbinAce
      @CorbinAce 4 роки тому

      That's another factor, for $800.00 you would think you would receive a better grade of lumber. Good lumber is a thing of the past, . I did buy a pickup but I was joking with that remark. I like pickups. I learned. I always push a cart inside and load it myself. I have actually asked a employee to help me and still rejected the bad pieces. They agree the lumber is crap. Home Depot is no better. Lowe's is my preference because they give 10% discount to Veterans. :O)

      My dad has a pickup truck but I can’t get 12 footers in a 6.5 ft bed safely. Not with the huge load I ordered, plus around a ton of concrete. I think $59 isn’t worth that kind of wear and tear on a vehicle, not to mention two trips to the store. I really think it is very cheap for a delivery of this size. Lowe's tried to scam me not long ago. Bought an extension cord on sale and after almost a week of waiting they finally shipped the item, removed the sale price and charged me full price. Completely baffled me since I'm pretty sure making an order is more or less a "contract" between you and the seller. If they didn't want to honor the sale price or whatever the deal was then void the contract and tell me the order is cancelled; DO NOT change the agreed upon price and try to scam me.

    I ordered wood online from Home Depot because I would save money too and it was the same thing. They gave me crappy, warped broken wood and I was not happy. The bad thing was they actually plastic wrapped the wood all together and so since that was my first time, I trusted them...no longer. The plyboards were all breaking a part in the middle. I used to love Home Depot but that really was a downer for me. Even if I have to pay a little more I go to ACE Hardware on Oahu because they give good quality wood and the workers who pick, pick the wood as if they are selecting for themselves. They actually gave me pointers too!

      Big box stores are good at some things, but quality customer service isn't one of them. When it comes to giant corporations like that, you unfortunately find a lot of workers that just don't care. It's definitely best to pick it yourself at the store and have them deliver if your local store allows "u-pick," or go elsewhere where the employees are loyal to their employer.

    Oh yes, Lowe's. Apparently kitchen appliance ordering can have issues as well. After ordering a refrigerator on October 2 and not being told that it could take 2 to 3 months to come in to Lowe's distribution center as opposed to the sales guy telling me it would be in just two weeks from ordering - that's just not good business practices. The only way I knew was after three weeks I called Lowe's and was told "just two more weeks". Two weeks rolled around and I called again and was told two more weeks. I finally got the refrigerator delivery 9 weeks after the original delivery date they gave when I purchased the frig in the store. They could not get the thing leveled - it looks like an old Chevy with bad shocks on one side. Soooo - I am using this frig till another one can come in. Goodness knows when that will be. I too have learned my lesson - if I can't lay eyes on it in the store, then don't even go there! Kathy Cook I got my washer, dryer and fridge from Lowes and had a great experience. Best price, fast delivery and no problems. Sorry to hear you had such a lousy experience. Unfortunately, with the age of the small town retailers behind us and everything is owned by a handful of multi-national corporations, customer service is mostly a thing of the past. There just isn’t much competition left in the marketplace. It’s on us to just get the best deal we can and suffer through the headaches, I guess. It isn’t all bad, though. We are living longer, have more free time, fight less wars and have less crime than ever before, so I’ll deal with damaged lumber. No big thing! It’s a good time to be alive 😊

      The Millennial Gardener Redwood is more expensive than pressure-treated lumber. I assume they use Doug Fir for pressure-treated and that’s a pretty inexpensive wood (maybe white pine in your area?). We’re fortunate here because it’s so dry (zone 10a) so very few issues with tomato diseases. Biggest problem I have is horn worms. Two of them can strip a 2-foot high tomato plant in less than a day. The blue jays and mocking birds keep them under control most of the time.

      Farmer Bob I think you’re right, it is pressure treated white pine or white oak. Something dirt cheap, I don’t know, but it’ll last for a decade or so.
      We have every tomato disease possible here in the southeast, as well as every pest: hornworms, Japanese beetles, stink bugs, leaf-footed bugs, shield bugs, aphids...and the hardest thing of all: 3 straight months of nights over 70 degrees and 90 degree days. If you can keep your plants alive from pests and disease until June, you’ll have 100% blossom drop from the heat!

    Quit being lazy, go pick it yourself....every big box store is paying low wages to its employees so don't be surprised if you get poor service

      Umm, it's called integrity. If you're being paid to do a job you agreed to do then it should be done right with the intent of pleasing the customer so the customer will return. Don't excuse the employee for loading something he/she wouldn't take to their own project because they are lower wage earners. I highly doubt the store encourages knowingly sending obviously damaged lumber to any paying customer. I just don't buy it. [pun intended]
