Fantastic accomplishment. It’s amazing that a precision machine from the early era is back making a living “making chips”. Your dedication and perseverance is inspiring. Thanks for taking us on this l o n g journey from rusted, broken hulk with missing parts to an important part of your shop.h

I was expecting Keith to put the lacing on with a hammer and was going to comment that he should contact Hand Tool Rescue to see about getting a belt lacing (machine? press? clamp?) tool. I guess I should've figured he'd have one.

That machine is a real beauty, just as mesmerising as a shaper, but more calm and comforting :)
But what is worth much more is to know all the work that you put in and now it repays you with working fine - congratulations, Keith!

Absolutely amazing! Let's recap this a bit. You got yourself a pre-1900 metal planer that likely had at least one foot, maybe two, in the grave. You rebuilt the thing to as good, if not better, than original, engineered a means to have it completely self-contained and still operate from flat belts, and have already had potential money-making jobs put before you. Add to all of that, you still have a day job that does not allow you to be in the shop 24/7. You have had some amazing help from awesome people to bring this piece of Americana back to life. Way to go! And this is only the beginning. The care you put into your machines is a testament to the respect you have for these old, but still useful, machines.

Totally flabbergasted! I can certainly see why the shaper was developed. Still, it's amazing to think of 140 or so years ago someone working on that machine to produce steam engine parts or what ever. Great series.

  • @lineshaftrestorations7903

I'm going to wager the restoration of this machine just might be better than original. A good belt dressing will help reduce the belt slipping. Unfortunately "good" belt dressing like was used when flat belts were common is hard to find. The best I've used is liquid Cling Surface. It was a coal tar based product. Anything similar today probably has an asphalt base. The stick type belt dressing is another unobtanium product.

Theres probably only a tiny number of metal planers this old that still function and a much smaller number that have been as exquisitely restored. If you feel an immense sense of pride, its warranted. 👍

2 years !! Has it really been that long ?!
Dang ! Great job sir. Its nice to see these old workhorses brought back to life again. After nearly 30 years of machining, i can say for sure.." they dont build them like they used to." These old machines and even up to the 60's and 70's era machines were built simple and tough. There are a lot of ww2 vintage machines still around in my area. Bullard's, Bridgeports, Milluakee, Lucas, Cincinnati's , Monarch, LeBlond, on and on..
They are fairly easy to repair. Most of the time, the electrical systems dry up and let go. Anyway ...great job Keith !!

Ran a Rockford belt drive planer similar size to yours when I was an apprentice over 35 years ago.
This is where I learned how to grind HS tool blanks into cutting tools.
Been there and done that with the belt lacing. We used a belt dressing stick on those slipping belts. We’d rub the dressing stick onto the gripping side of the running belt. That sticky belt dressing helped with heavy cuts.

Hi Keith, great job on the planer. This takes me back to our old cabinet shop. We had several machines that still used flat belts, some still leather, others some type of rubberized canvas. Our alligator lacing machine was one that you used a big shop vise to squeeze the teeth together. We found that when we used rawhide pins instead of metal, we got a lot more mileage out of the lacings. Thanks again for bring history back to life!!
