    The thing to remember is...
It is NOT a Disney show - it is a BBC show.
It was being made and broadcast/streamed LONG before Disney got involved.

100% Disney could revert to sole international distribution & the BBC fund it but for me it won't be a full season probably specials for Xmas, New Year & Easter. DW still makes a lot of money globally for BBC Studios as the latest earnings report proved

True but now Alot of their funding is from Disney due to the merger/partnership

@@Riptych No doubt & it proves that until the BBC know exactly how much money (understandable) they will have for production on S3 they cannot proceed.
No one is prepared to greenlight anything without knowing where the money is coming from.
The huge problem is Ncuti & his schedule after his theatre stint. In Jan he is not waiting around for months of 2025 for decisions to be made but I can see him doing some specials filming in late 2025 for a New Year & Xmas plan for 2026/7 🤔

Simply put, I think the current 2 year contract is simply a trial period. Once Season 2 releases and they see for certain if they want to continue, the next contract may be for longer.
I still think that Doctor Who should've partnered with Paramount+ though. That way, maybe they could do a proper Doctor Who/Star Trek crossover.

Exactly, if Disney weren't to renew the deal then the BBC would just go back to making it on a lesser budget and that would be fine, the biggest issue would mainly be international distribution since it would once again limit the international reach but the show would still be made regardless.

The TV landscape is still changing massively. Don’t forget BBC can still make and deliver Doctor Who without Disney. They did it before and can do it again. If Disney didn’t want it, doesn’t mean it’ll be automatically cancelled.
It does raise an interesting point that the BBC could provide international access to its shows via iPlayer through a log in / subscription service for those outside the UK so they could sell the Whoniverse to the world without Disney.
I do think Disney+ is in serious trouble, even the huge shows just aren’t performing.

Am still sticking around because as a blind person I found a lot to enjoy throughout the whole season/series, including the new music which is once again bombastic. I still think, however, the "Always a Twist" song could have had a better lead-in, RTd said they filmed the dialogue but cut it which is a huge surprise and from an in-universe standpoint having some dialogue would have made things wrap up as it would have actually confirmed the whole reason why the song was taking place, which was remnants of Meistro leaving and music returning to the world, but everything was music for a while.

I think you’re dancing around the core issue. The season wasn’t very good. It didn’t rise to the level of RTD’s previous work, and a lot of viewers, myself included, dealt with mounting disappointment, from Star Beast on. I found the stories shallow (except for Dot and Bubble) and the characters - even the Doctor - thin and not very relatable. It’s like RTD abandoned his greatest strength. I think a content course correction could help if it’s not too late.

@nikonbear7882 a good example of that was when he 'announced' that because the first Gatwa season was only 8 episodes the time-slot had been extended from the standard 45mins to 50mins.This turned out to be 100% false,as that extra 5mins was taken up either side of the Saturday evening broadcast by BBC in-house advertising, whereas the repeats in the early hours of the morning were in fact 45mins long because at that time of day the BBC advertise less!Out of the 8 episodes 5 of them were the standard 45mins.

I just don't understand Doctor Who fans' obsession with cancellation. It's the only fandom where you could have a Christmas special, a full season, and a spin off ahead of you, and still worry if the show will be around past that. I think that so many focus so much on the show's future that they forget about what they have right now. Will Doctor Who be cancelled in 2026 or 2027? I don't know any better than anyone else. It's right now 2024 though. How about we look at what we have right now, and enjoy the ride?

If Disney bail, the Beeb will just take the show to HBO - RTD and Bad Wolf have a good relationship with them, having co-produced His Dark Materials and Industry with them. The Max service in the US is also the streaming home of series 1-13 of NuWho. Disney have better international distribution, with Disney+ being available basically everywhere, but they’d find a way!

I watched the current reiteration, and truly was not happy with it. I am now in the process of re-watching the revival series once again and am currently on Matt Smith. RTD Doctor Who from Eccleston era onward and RTD Doctor Who from Gatwa are not even close in quality. If we didn't know better, I would not have believed the current era was by RTD. I got a Disney subscription so I could watch Doctor Who, but after watching this past season, I will not be renewing and will not be watching anymore Doctor Who until they do some major changes. I also won't be watching the spin off. I watched the Jodie episode around that idea and it was bad, and to take the worst watched episode from the Jodie era and make a show around it, I don't know what they were thinking. Too bad really, as I really like Russel Tovey. I thought his Alonso character in the Titanic episode, and Captain Jack, made a good couple.

I wouldn't worry about a gap year even if Disney don't renew season 3 until season 2 has aired.
Season 1 took 18 months to produce so season 3 will probably be the same. RTD has said season 2 will air earlier in the year than season 1 did (probably because of the extra production time).
This means that production of season 3 can start in spring of 2025 and be ready to air late 2026. No gap year required. A good comparison would be the gap between series 12 and Flux. It's not ideal but at least we would still have yearly Doctor Who.

They were down to the 2 million or so mark at the end...And when they add up the recorded, I player and online views it still only took it up to the 3 - 3.5 or so mark. Which I found astonishing as it meant that the most popular way to view the show was still via standard broadcast tv. The audience that was claimed to have changed to viewing online on Iplayer etc did not show up in huge or larger numbers for online views. And the show did not chart at all on the Nielsen streaming ratings for Disney+ or online either. Which has led to this will they wont they situation with the Disney deal. Disney may not renew that deal and the BBC will then have to go back to making the show in house. I would be happy for that to happen and for it to go back to a low budget as well, like the old days when it used to run from September to the following March / April on a shoestring....

The show ended when Capaldi said, "Doctor, I let you go." Everything after that takes place in some weird alternative universe. The only satisfactory explanation I'll accept for the utter tosh of Series 14 is that the Toymaker was behind everything, and he's preparing for the next game with the Doctor. He turned the Doctor into a woman, he regenerated Missy into the Spy Master, he turned the Doctor into the Timeless Child, he planted Sutekh around the TARDIS - and all for his own amusement. He created the mystery around Ruby's mother and enabled Ruby to make it snow; he created the Maestro as his 'child'; he was behind the events of 73 Yards.

The stand alone episodes of Doctor Who don’t really work anymore IMO because of the quite shocking gap in quality between each episodes as a result of RTD’s messy writing and a lack of a good closure at the end of the season. In order for Doctor Who to have a better overall story and higher rating for each episode, a serialised version of Doctor Who might work. RTD could shine once again if he made a limited amount of episodes, all based within the same storyline as more time and effort could be spent perfecting them. Just look at Children of Earth, an excellent example of how a reduced amount of episodes and a serialised approach could be the answer to one of the least popular, and one of the most lacking seasons of Doctor Who in its modern return.

I totally agree. I loved the show growing up. I was born during the Pertwee era and remember mose Tom Baker stories from original transmission. It was no surprise to me that it was cancelled in 1989 as the McCoy era was no the best and the storylines became to condensed and hard to follow. I was overjoyed when they brought it back in 2005 and loved the first 3 NEW doctors, especially David Tennant. But history is repeting itself (as it does). The last Xmas special of Matt Smith we saw the Timelords give him a new set of regenerations. But a few years later when 'Chris Chibnall' took over it was destroyed by poor writing and terrible continuity. Odviously he is not a Whovian. As we know it turned out he/she was not a timelord after all and a timeless child that gave the Timelords regeneration. So what on earth were the Timelords giving him a new set of regenerations for? Also every Dr Who fan knows that it was in 1963 in Totters Yard that the Chameleon Circuit broke so it was stuck as a police box AND it was his grand-daughter Susan that named it TARDIS (Maybe Chris Chibnall should have watched the first episode as he clearly did not) So, even if we could believe that the Doctor had lives before the first, how can you explain the coloured female doctor having a time machine called TARDIS and it being stuck on a police box when clearly this has not happened to him yet. Yes we are talking about time travel and yes he could visit his former selves and vice versa but it would not be comprehensible to accept that a previous incarnation has something that a future incarnation ran away with.
And just as I thought when R T Davis came back he might save the show and correct this he goes and makes it ten times worse by introducing Bi-Regenerations which goes off the scale. On that I thrown the remote at the TV and said a couple of words to Docotor Who and the second word was 'OFF'.
I now refuse to watch any episode past the 50th Anniversary in 2013 and I long for it to be cancelled again for good. Soon the Doctor will wear round glasses and report to Hogwarts. It is not Science Fiction anymore it is childrens fantasy with no science in it at all fiction or not. Bye Bye, The 50 years were great.. Time to retire Doctor Who for good.

I think it's a really odd one. The problem I think with season 1 (which I did enjoy personally) was that I think they tried too hard to make it like original Doctor Who but with a 2024 approach and in doing so there were things that felt forced and not like as if they were by coincidence (I think back to the episode when they tackled the Doctor's race and to me I didn't like that. Not because of any issue of racism but because it felt forced similar to when Jodie Whittaker was the Doctor and they constantly felt the need to bring up the fact she was a woman). I also just think the big thing was yes we did have the whole Susan Triad story but really I felt you just needed to watch those two final episodes and whilst I might sound like a cynic the problem was there wasn't really any sense of a need to watch the other episodes because they didn't lean in hard enough. And yes of course we might have had SUTEKH but the problem was, for starters, SUTEKH was just underwhelming and very predictable (I feel since Infinity War we have too many people trying to wipe out the world) but also it just felt so forced that he was a god that you were thinking how he linked to the Pantheon when we don't know anything. Why not instead do a character like the Toymaker again or better still do the idea of The Trickster which would really challenge the Doctor. '
It's a shame because honestly I really did like some of the ideas but I think fresh blood is needed and the tone of it needs to change from whimsical.

Merchandise would still get made, but we'd probably have a lot less of it.

I think as usual there is a lot going on they wont tell us. I am pretty sure Gatwa will be gone after this second season. Which is fine by me. Who they get next or where they take it after that is anyones guess. But I also think they are waiting to see how will it goes over in season 2, if the ratings fall still further, if it charts at all on Nielsen etc and then make a decision. Disney will look after itself first. Low budget or not its still money. If it picks up and does better in season 2 they can renew the deal if they want to, if not it will be up to the BBC to decide whats next. I think it will get lower ratings myself...less than 2 million on the overnights. The catchup, consolidated and iplayer never managed to equal the overnights or even surpass them as people were hoping. After a month or so its just about scraping the 4 million mark from online, recorded, live etc...after a month! So its up to the fans, if people are thinking this is the best its ever been etc, to turn out to watch it.

People talk about attracting the younger age group. It needs to be remembered at this has always been the case. In my case younger dated from Patrick Troughton. If the product is good everyone will love and want to see it. If you aim at a certain audience folk will turn off. Also if you are looking for subject matter, look how an old Dr Who was constructed and how it is now, yes the new ones are flashy as as result of CGI etc, but the suspense was more frightening than the actual monsters sometimes in the early ones.

I think they have to understand that there is a solid base of us who will watch, unlike developing a new show. That costs a lot and there's no guarantee of viewership.
Other than the White Supremacist homophobes in the comments, the real fans are here for it.

I didn’t like the 60th, despite the amazing performance by NPH. The handwaving healing of Donna gutted her first ending. I think Jodie’s final scene was amazing and the show should have been rested a few years at that point. If we find out everything from that is dream or alt universe, I could live with it…. The doctor’s consciousness trapped in a fake world…hence weird stuff like bi-regen…okay. Let’s go back to Jodie on a hill and start over with the dreamworld over. That doesn’t undo Ncuti, he is still part of the doctor’s mind that manifested in the dream state. But the condition the show is in now….no. Let it go.

Even if it hasn’t been at its best lately, I’ll be devastated if it’s cancelled. Doctor Who has been my whole life

Nope its not going to be cancelled and do you know why? Because the BBC NEED this show. its been a huge unexpected money maker for them and they don't have the clout to cancel It. The BBC have nothing that's of the same status as Doctor Who in pop culture. And the fact that America is also interested in its success helps make it look good.
