@@maiamaybe in many cases having an abstract idea is much better for the recipient that having an obvious answer to an already simple question. Give people something to think about... Atleast that is my thoughts.
I don’t like it. Much harder to see and find among a mess of other apps. The beauty of the old one was that it stood out among other app, while still having the clean simple Google look. Now it blends in with generic apps like Chrome. And a simple pin is a lot less intuitive than a green map.
The old icon was good, it was very clear and you could tell it was a map and what purpose it was for. This new icon is just confusing and doesn't make it obvious what it represents. 👎

What is rather out of date, is driving directions being the default results. It came, I suppose, out of google maps being a mapquest competitor back in the days where we didn't have mobile data, so the main use case was preparing a bunch of printouts for complicated car journeys. Now users can be walking along, looking for their platform for a train or using a smartwatch or phone mount to get to unfamiliar places on a bike, and since maps went international a long time ago I would wager most journeys users make are not using a car. But google actually pushes individual car transport by putting ride-hailing services in active travel and public transit modes. I wonder if that has an effect on people choosing less often to take more sustainable and healthy methods of transportation.
You won't even let us pick a color on our Pins, now you want to celebrate and make Pins colorful and front and center of your brand?!? Get the fuck outta here. This should be Google's Gap design disaster. Everyone should be outraged about this. We all love your new features, but there's nothing wrong on your logo. Not broken so don't fix it.
