Hello! I’d love to answer your question on why the folks didn’t smile.
The reason was,
it took up to 30 minutes to capture the image and of the people had to smile or laugh they would be so tired after doing so that it was much easier to just stay still without smiling but if you find an image or cabinet card is what you have there and the person is smiling you have a rare and valuable image worth a few dollars.
It’s so simple how we can take photographs now isn’t it and even the poorest of people can take photographs now so easily but back then mainly those who were wealthy were able to afford to have their image captured unlike today anyone can with a snap of their camera phones.
