Also, most cultural institutions like museums, aquariums and landmarks like the CN Tower are located there and social activities like restaurants, nightclubs and entertainment take place. That is why it’s called "downtown," and it is easily accessible to people…basically it’s the “heart” of the city.
P.s. This is a North American concept but in Europe it’s called City Centre or Stadtzentrum (Germany) & stadscentrum or binnenstad in Holland.
