The reason I think he was best in the world...Consistant, perfection, and speed. Many skaters can do some of the jumps just fine, but you could take a nap while they slow down and work into the jumps. That's not Boitano's trick...he really goes for it!
I just sit and admire his legs. The only place I've seen muscle like that is on a ballet stage. At 5'11", Brian is nearly a foot taller than many other male skaters so his body is not well suited for gymnastic tumbling. I love how he uses the difference to best advantage. Long bone gives him more leverage and counterbalance, more frame for more muscle, and more extension. His motion will never look as rapid as a shorter skater so his focus is on precision instead, perfect execution of the classic moves and no gimmicks. The result is majestic power moving with elegant grace.
Oh how I miss the days when figure skating was figure skating and not just a quadruple jumping fest. Boitano, Michelle Kwan, Dorothy Hamill, Scott Hamilton, Peggy Fleming, and the others of that era had the jumps (yes, only triples), but they also demonstrated grace and strength through beautiful spirals, spins, and intricate footwork. Jumps are great, but too many jumps and the program becomes boring and monotonous (at least in my humble opinion). This was truly a brilliant skate, Mr. Boitano!
