  • Is Michigan State Football set up for success entering 2024 and beyond? Not long ago, Kenneth Walker was in the Heisman Trophy conversation and Mel Tucker and Michigan State were buzzing in national headlines like Deion Sanders and Colorado were in 2023. The 2021 Michigan State Football Team shocked the college football world, and Tucker's firing early last year only adds to the Cinderella story that occurred that year. Jonathan Smith brings an elite staff to East Lansing, a staff that Mel Tucker's cannot compare to because of the stark difference between their level of success. Tucker's staff consistently fielded terrible secondaries and inconsistent offenses, while Smith's staff has created great offenses at Oregon State and tough defenses at Minnesota. We also cannot forget about one of the best strength and conditioning coaches in college football, Mike MacDonald. In addition to an elite staff, the Spartans retain key players from their 2023 roster and bring in transfers who are ready to contribute. The Spartans should go bowling in 2024 and I believe they will achieve great things beyond this season. Make sure to comment so I can interact with you and answer any questions you have!

    Sparty fan here, I am happy with us not getting any media attention outside East Lansing. We are like Jerry from Parks and Rec, as long as we do our best work when nobody is watching. As soon as we have a spot light on us we tend to fail. We need a realistic approach similar to how the Lions rebuilt themselves, slow and steady, and fixing what it means to be MSU football

    • @collegefootballwithsam
      @collegefootballwithsam  2 місяці тому +5

      I think the Lions analogy is very appropriate here, especially given how Jonathan Smith's offensive identity is focused on the offensive line, much how Detroit's offensive identity is.

      Michigan State's defensive line can be vicious this year if the players stay healthy. I'm glad that Bai Jobe stuck around, as he could have hit the transfer portal with his talent level and found a niche at other Power 5 schools.

    I just saw the voice of college football rank Johnathon Smith as his #9 coach in the nation,
    I think the coaching, the QB and development of the strong 22 and 23 classes should give them a shot at a good year. 8 wins

    Spartans get PLAGUED yearly with injuries. It’s disgusting likely because of Tuggers methods in training and preparation. Tatum came out on Spartanmags UA-cam channel and indicated they do a hell of a lot more stretching than the previous coaches. Little nuggets of info

    As a State fan, I’m excited to see what happens, but this team is going to be a real mystery. They could go 9-3, or they could go 4-8.
    My biggest questions are the receivers, O-line depth/depth in general, and just the common problem of everyone having to learn a new system.
    Also, it may take some time to get the recruiting up to speed (if it ever does). Part of the mystery, though, is not knowing how good the bulk of the BigTen is going to be. How winnable will the Rutgers, Indiana, Maryland, Iowa and Purdue games be? MSU has a history of over performing against Michigan. Can Smith keep up that tradition? Could MSU catch Oregon looking forward to the big tO$U game the following week? There are definitely opportunities to surprise some people.

    I think the hire and the staff is as good as I could have hoped for. Gonna take some time to rebuild and establish a program after the disaster of Tucker but I think Smith is the man to do it. I finally have some hope again after a wild ride under Tucker where I never really felt confident in him and then the disappointing end to Dantonios tenure

    All Homerism aside, I don't know how Jonathan Smith could possibly have done better this off-season. He saved the numbers in the recruiting class. Smith quelled the mass exodus into the transfer portal and saved almost all of the potential impact departures. Best of all, Smith took many Oregon State players with him to East Lansing. Including a quarterback that is probably the most elite athlete ever to compete there. YES, I BELIEVE AIDAN CHILES WILL BE THAT GOOD. AS A DUAL THREAT QUARTERBACK, HE CAN BE ANOTHER MICHAEL PENIX. Drop back quarterbacks in todays college game are as obsolete as Model Ts on an autobahn!! Chiles will place immediate pressure on opposing defenses with his dual threat skill set. The COACHING ROOM itself is the biggest reason why this team will compete in short order in the Big Ten. If not this season, certainly the next. Smith and this staff are too good to not be a top ten program. Because this staff from top to bottom is top ten or better. That is the foundation of success in any sport. And the Spartans will compete and win championships. COUNT ON IT.

    • @donaldschmidt2990
      @donaldschmidt2990 2 місяці тому

      @opinion8ed That is truly where it's at. To compete in the collegiate game, you must acquire more talent than leaves for other pastures. Every time!! Smith has done this as well as could be reasonably expected. Or unreasonably expected!! Even the naysayers that say Smith's recruiting wasn't elite at Oregon State have missed their airplane flight. Look where he was at? Corvallis Oregon was a gridiron graveyard until Smith rode in and cleaned up Dodge City with the Beavers. Recruiting in East Lansing with top ten resources will pull in four and five stars. Just win baby. And they will!! GO GREEN!!

    I see a competent offense next year, Probobly top half of the big ten next year. BUT… the defense will be the linchpin of this team. The DBs are young and have high upsides. The D-line will be good per the norm at MSU, and the linebackers might be one of the best units in the big ten. Honestly I expect 7wins minimum. And be really close in potentially all of the loses

      Nathan Carter. As a state fan we finally have a coach that is offensive minded defensive stats look worse than the tape itself. This was a team with an inept offense that just couldn't find a steady run game due to Jay Johnson's run up the gut on 3rd down and 10 mentality and the accuracy issues of the QB room. This led to the defense being expected to be on the field roughly 70-80% of the game. I think Nate Carter will be the next Kenneth Walker this season. I know the oline still leaves a lot to be desired but I think with the legs and arms of Aiden Chiles this year Nathan Carter is going to shine.

    I have respect for your analysis. However, MSU will compete better than you predict. Jonathan Smith and MSU Spartans are far ahead with better OC and DC is excellent. They will go to a bowl and more than the Red Shoe Bowl. I expect 7 wins. I expect a couple of positive upsets, and if happen, they could win 8. What will make the difference? Coach Jonathan Smith and some fair good talent and a nimble scramble QB Aiden Childs. He can throw the ball. Aiden Childs may indeed become a Heisman candidate in the future. I believe you have underestimated Aiden Childs. Tough schedule - but iron sharpens iron. Spartans will be more than “chapping wood this year” Looking forward to 2024.

    Once upon a time I feared Michigan state with Dantonio as head coach due to the to fact we lost to them TWICE in one year before, however that was some time ago. Those teams under Mark would recruit more Ohio players than Ohio state itself… that alone spoke volumes and I also wonder what could’ve been under Mel but here we are. Great vid Sam

      Thank you for the support! Mark Dantonio knew how to find diamonds in the rough out of Ohio. He also learned his elite defensive coaching from Jim Tressel, being the defensive coordinator there during the 2002 National Championship season. I think Jonathan Smith's own success as an offensive coordinator and head coach sets up Michigan State nicely in the future. We don't know what the future holds, but I believe in Smith and his staff.

    Love the video, sparty fan here id say my biggest areas of concern going into the year are WR’s and DB’s, think the defensive line and LB’s will be good/very good. Need the young talent to step up on the back end, on the offensive end im intrigued to see the OL development under coach M. WR room could be sneaky good but think it’s lacking an element of speed and a true number 1 go to guy.

    The have a great HC who understands how to build a sound football team from the inside out, Chiles in limited/planned action looked very good. They essentially run the Mike Shanahan outside zone WC offense, important question is do they have the OL and DL that will keep them in games? No idea.. I don’t follow portal or recruits etc MSU hired the right coach but it may take 3years min before they’re competitive each week in the new B10

      Yeah, that’s highly likely. I do believe he’s a decent OL coach, but he wasn’t as advertised during his time w/ MSU, as we were led to believe he was one of the best in the business, and yet, State’s offensive line seemed to regress each year under his watch. Also didn’t help that the strength & conditioning program under Jason Novak took a step back, as they had an excessive amount of injuries more often than not. Hope things improve under Jim Michalczik and Mike McDonald.
