I was 11 yo when these came out. Myself and two cousins got that exact sets that year. They all went right back. They were terrible. Two guys department store had stacks of them that had been returned. Great video and explanation! Thank you!

Slotless is the only AFX sets I ever use. You can draft, pass, true racing. Key is buy new old stock cars and silicon tires.double up on the power packs on large set up.

Wasn't the Americana 2000 the largest set? Also I remember a set, it might have been the Grand National that was in a white "shipping box" not the colorful Ultra 5 box. It had a cross track, also it had the LED digital lap counter and a type of "Data Center" which simulated fuel, allowed you to set the number of laps, and had sound sent via wire to an observation tower. This set is nearly apocryphal in finding any large amount of information on. But a few have appeared on eBay (sadly NONE are complete so far).
I have a restored Aurora AFX Ultra 5 Galaxy 250 with newer grandstands and buildings, a vintage set of banners and signs from Aurora (No Tomy AFX except for a grandstand) and I found two new Aurora AFX Ultra 5 stock controllers and power pack. The only thing that is added, is an LED lap counter from a larger Ultra 5 set. Also, found two (A and B) slot car chassis brand new and work great with the existing bodies. Sadly for the bodies, the stickers are peeling off as age and oxidation take their toll on them. Great sets, but be warned, parts and cars can be difficult to obtain and like TCR slotless, they go through tires and pickup shoes quickly. As with all classic slot car sets, it's best to have an "ugly but honest" track you can race and play on and preserve your collector set. These sets are getting harder to find in good condition and are steadily increasing in price.

Try turning the wheel left when you get close to the left hand turn. See if the front wheels are turning right or is it going to fast in the curve. Stay in the right lane in the left hand curve then turn the wheel left to see if it will shift into the left lane.

I bought a Speedsteer nos set with additional Tyco TCR cars. I found it worked very poorly in practice for these reasons: the highly magnetic rails and the overly strong magnets made the cars stick to the rails too much. Also the cars don't have clutches to coast. I heard some cars do have clutches and some tracks use stainless but I am hesitant to buy more unless I get confirmation

I have experimented and had many slotless sets except the ultra 5. I have a Speedsteer set I got off eBay. Didn't work that impressive initially. The track needs to be super clean and your have to have good tires as well as some momentum when changing lanes. The speedsteer sets work quite well cause they use a worm gear on the front of the motor to steer the car. The ultra 5 use a diode and electromagnet to steer it. The speed steer cars work well with TLC. You can use it with your existing ultra5 track but use the terminal track section, power transformer, and controllers. Get a speedsteer set and have FUN!
The front tires on the ultra5 cars were foam rubber. Speed steer tires will fit and work

I can see how a kid could lose interest in these real quick. Especially if he/she or even a adult like myself got a bad car and didnt know how to tune it. I learned something new today i thought that Tyco and Ideal made slotless tracks. I hope you can get both cars running good and get us another video.

Will the Tyco TCR Passing Cars work on that track?

It looks like you have a lot of room down there. Go ahead and make slot car track bigger!!! Fill up the hole basement with race tracks!!! Too much work with the slot less tracks. I had one back in the day, didn't like it. The races were horrible. No one could drive the cars. I prefer slots, much better racing. Plus you can do a lot of tuning on the old slot cars slot cars. Just my opinion. Keep racing!!! Have fun!!

All these slotless / ultra 5 / tyco tcr stuff was a gimmick since the popularity of rc cars was gaining ground to slots. Companies scrambled getting something new on the market regardless if it worked or not. Youd be surprised how many of these sets I've parted out and thrown away over the decades, just zero demand for it. Only tuning I'd suggest is taking the cars, dropping a crown out, locking the other (eliminates the free wheeling effect) and notching the center shoe pin out to add in a guide pin. They act similar to a super magna traction /g plus chassis. Bodies are great candidates for customs after a quick bleach bath to get rid of the hokey chrome paint they put on these bodys. Other then that these sets are great for wasting shelf space.

I had this as a kid …..I hated it, could never get it to work right… shortly after I discovered my older brother's huge 1960s Aurora Model Motoring setup and cars in the basement in boxes and was hooked to slot cars

Seems like the cars and track need to be detailed to get good lane changing performance. I've been interested in the slotless tracks since I was a kid, but your demonstration shies me away from it.
