  • BGD LYNX 2 Paraglider Test & Review. The LYNX 2 is a lightweight sports class wing from BGD. It's a two and a half liner, which means that from front to back it has three line sets in the middle (A, B and C) and two line sets at the tips (A and B). With a moderate aspect ratio for a sports class wing, 6.2, the LYNX 2 is certified EN C, using folding lines.
    What the heck is a hybrid 2.5 liner anyway? ;-)
    A 3 liner has 3 rows of main lines front to back -A, B and C.
    A 2 liner has 2 rows front to back, A and B.
    A 2.5 liner has a 3 line layout in the centre of the wing and 2 lines at the tips.
    So why in the sky did BGD choose to make the LYNX 2 a 2.5 liner EN C wing, rather than a 2 liner EN C, which seems to be all the rage at the moment?
    A 2.5 liner requires less rods to retain chordwise structural stability, making it lighter, more compact and easier to pack.
    BGD believes the Lynx 2's line layout also offers a wider brake range, better tolerance of low speeds, and more forgiving stall behaviour. They also feel it's also generally easier and safer to launch, ground handle and fly, compared to a 2 liner.
    Comparisons with other wings
    Both in Colombia and the UK I had the opportunity to fly closely with many different wings, of all levels. Compared to other wings I've tested and flown against… I feel the LYNX 2 has a noticeable performance advantage in terms of glide and speed over even the best-performing current high B wings - the IOTA DLS, Ikuma 3, MENTOR 7, Rush 6 and MAESTRO 2.
    Quite similar performance overall to the best performing current EN C 3 and 2.5 liners - the SIGMA 11, CURE 2, Artik 6, Delta 4, CAYENNE6, SAVAGE and Queen 3.
    Quite similar also to the Volt 4, Bonanza 3, CODEX and MINT, but I feel these may have a slight advantage when fully accelerated.
    I feel the best performing EN C 2 liners I've tested - the Artik R, Photon, SCALA 2, X2C and Volt 5 - have a noticeable performance advantage, even at trim but especially accelerated.
    In terms of handling, compared with other sports class wings, to give an idea, I found the Lynx 2 more agile than the CURE 2, Delta 4, SAVAGE, CAYENNE6, Volt 4, CODEX, MINT, Photon and Volt 5. It has similar agility to the Bonanza 3 and Queen 3. Not quite as agile as the SIGMA 11, ALLEGRO, Artik 6, Artik R, SCALA 2 and X2C.
    Who's it for?
    Pilots looking for a light yet durable, compact and easy-packing sports class wing with mid C pilot demands, very nice handling and excellent all-round XC performance. Suitable for pilots ready to upgrade from a high B wing.
    Pilots wanting to downgrade from a high C or D wing, still wanting excellent XC performance but choosing to shift their focus more on enjoyment, less on performance.
    Competitions?
    Although the Lynx 2 is not the out-and-out top performer in the serial class it offers excellent handling and performance - including good speed - and lower pilot demands than the top performers so it's a great wing for taking part in serial-class competitions like the SRS. If you're gunning to win you might do it on the Lynx but if you wanted to put all your ducks in your favour then you'd have to fly one of the top performing EN C 2-liners, whether you wanted to or not. Since they're not excluded, you might have to get a torpedo harness too, whether you wanted to or not. And of course, being light and compact, and easy to launch in all (launchable) conditions, the Lynx 2 is an excellent wing for hike and fly events and competitions, especially serial class ones.

      Thank you for this long awaited review! Considering that the Lynx 2 is not a very demanding C wing (perhaps it is fair to say that it is a "low-C" glider), what would be the reason to pick a BASE 2 instead of the Lynx 2?
      I mean...if you look at the EN testing score, the Lynx 2 is almost identical to Base 2 (except for the need of the folding lines that force it to be categorised as a C class). Yes, it has more AR than Base 2, but not really much more. It is similar to RISE 4 or EXPLORER 2, and those are EN-B.
      When compared to SIGMA 11, is the LYNX 2 a more approachable wing (as a first EN-C)? By approachable I mean easier to manage in a very turbulent air (dampening more, and being more stable), with ENB level recovery from most situations.
      ...asking for a friend.. ;)
      Thanks!
      ps.. any word on a BASE 3 this year??

    as always a great video. Will you also test the SWING Stellar RS? It is also a 2.5 liner but a high B wing. would be an interesting comparison.

    Thanks for the comprehensive review! I have been flying my Lynx 2 for ~60h and love it. I enjoy launch characteristics, stability, speed and ability. I also like landing behavior very much, it's a perfect wing for hike and fly racing etc.

    Carlo, I'd love to hear your opinion on the Mac Para Verve! I personally have been flying mine for about 15 hours, and I absolutely love it! It has a good combination of semi light material with full nitinol rods. On glide with photons it seems that I have a bit of an edge, but I'm also on the larger size, and has great agility, with awesome stability. I haven't taken a single collapse on it yet and I have flown it on California days where some thermals have reached upwards of constant 7m/s. It is my first two liner though, so I don't really have a point of reference compared to others only the other guys that I fly with

    Flying along with others, I would say that these "performance differences" to 2 liner Cs are so small, so it is neglectable for everyone that does not fly on full bar a lot. For me, small and easy packing and general flying behavior is much more important. But people are different... I have flown the Tala for a couple of years and liked that glider a lot. Nowadays I do not fly enough to fly a C, but if I did the Lynx2 seems like a "must try".

    Very nice video, Carlo! I was in Columbia for the first time in late January this year! I recognize 7 launch, and a lot of the landmarks from your flights.
    The sound of the bromeliad frogs brings back happy memories of evenings at my hotel. Where were you staying? That looks like a pretty great place.

    So would you say it‘s a bit less squirrelly in rough air than the Cure 2?

    • @thiquinteiro
      @thiquinteiro 4 місяці тому +2

      Lynx2 has lower aspect ratio than cure 2, in general it means less squirrelly

    • @flybubblecarlo
      @flybubblecarlo 4 місяці тому +2

      Yes, having tested both extensively, the Lynx 2 is significantly more "monobloc" than the Cure 2; it moves around noticeably less in rough air. I didn't find the Cure 2 that squirrelly in rough air for a mid to high end 2-liner; it's more that I find the Lynx 2 is pretty solid and comfortable, for a light mid C wing. The original Cure - which I personally liked but would class as a hot C i.e. a D in C clothing - was a lot more active in rough air. It was also far less forgiving on the stall/spin point. Same for it's light version, the Lynx 2. I found the Lynx 2 pretty comfortable for the category, light mid C.

      @@flybubblecarlo Thanks for your feedback. I dropped back to a Base 2 lite for 18 months due to school (also have a Cure 2). Now that my thesis is submitted looking to flying a lot more…

    Didn't enjoy very much the lynx 2. I found it quite unstable in active air, especially on roll axis, a lot of small tip collapses too, without any kind of consequences but still... i had more expectations honestly, as a happy former pilot of the sigma 11. For the rest is a nice allround classic en-C wing.

    • @samu.fliagn
      @samu.fliagn 4 місяці тому

      I think the collapses of the tips are typical for bgd, they call it progressive stability

    • @CuivTheLazyGeek
      @CuivTheLazyGeek 4 місяці тому +4

      Interesting, I have the opposite impression, I found it to be really stable and relaxed in active air, haven't gotten a collapse with it yet...

    • @maddinrausch
      @maddinrausch 4 місяці тому +1

      I have been flying my Lynx 2 for ~60h and find it very stable in active air, both at trim and on bar (there it even gets more stable from my impression). The soft ears are an intended feature and are used for kinda communication purposes: the glider would tell you that the air is not as good as you may have thought before. 😉 However, I wouldn't even call them wing collapses... it's more of an acoustic feedback from my experience. I haven't had a single collapse so far - in contrast to the High-B glider I owned before. 🙈

      Small tip collapses are part of Bruce's design philosophy - progressive instability.

    How far is it from an high b? Certification wise it's basically a b.

    • @timothee.gigout-magiorani
      @timothee.gigout-magiorani 3 місяці тому +1

      "Folding lines used"... and 1 C for increasing brake pressure or maybe not enough brake travel ? Unless you're accelerated, it even looks like a EN-A glider. I mean this is essentially the certification of a ION6 but with shorter brakes. Yet that's a 6.2 vs 5.2 AR wing. Time to start another fruitless debate on the EN certification process : D
