Imposter Shinnok is definitely one of my favorite fighting game characters ever. Nothing is as satisfying as stealing an opponent's move and performing one of their brutalities with it.
Agreed. Even the face rip brutality itself where he literally just steals the opponents face and uses it as a "mask" is super cool. Imposter Shinnok is my main in MKX. Always love playing him
Bone Shaper for me is the most fun variation. You get great preassure though the halbard, a Scoop attack, an unblockable, a fast projectile and some of the best normals in mkx.
Fun fact: Shinnok's AI in MK4 didn't (or maybe even couldn't) morph at all. So imagine after a few attempts of defeating Goro you're facing this joke of a character who meant to be a final boss
his cheap AI doesn't help either be it abuse weapons, pick-ups, etc... lacking personal abilities + can't be morphed make shinnok incredibly easy to beat
Honestly Shinnok has always seemed like a "wasted potential" kind of character. He's a fallen elder god, but always seemed like an ordinary character. Especially his underwhelming MK4 appearance; he's clearly not even a finished character or a worthy boss character. Good thing he has (or had) a relatively high tier spot in MKX, but it took him forever get there lmao. I wonder if he appears in a future MK game, how they'll beef him up to seem like a true "fallen elder god".
I find characters in fighting games who are made to feel powerful usually end up being worse because they tend to give them stuff like an incredibly unsafe massive damage attacks to make you. An example like Justice from GG accent core +r is a decent representation of what I mean. To make you feel like a boss they have to make you so slow it takes like 20 seconds to cross the screen
Mad respect for a fellow creator of templates of memes, gotta be one of my favorite lolcows genres (in 2020 i was the propagander of "khe paso master" and "adios prepa, hola narcotrafico"😊)
MK lore: Shinnock is one of thee most powerful, influential, diabolical villains in MK history Midway: Neat CAN YOU FINNISH DESIGNING HIM IN THE NEXT TEN MINUTES WE HAVE TO RELEASE GAME NOW!!11! /mk4
Very happy you covered Shinnok. He's my favorite villain in the series and I always felt that he's kind of an underrated character and is seen as one of the lesser main antagonists in the series by fans. I like how he improves as a playable fighter in each subsequent iteration. He's by far my most played character in MKX. He's just plain fun across all three variations and (even tho this has nothing to with gameplay) he has some of the coolest intros. Excellent Competitive History video as always!
I have friend named Harukaze, he was an Impostor Shinnok player and he was really good. That character was insane, Bone Shaper in particular was my personal favorite
Ironically for me, my favorite thing about Shinnok in MK4 that was unique to him, other than the spear and skele-hand, never made it to the other games: His grab. I loved seeing him grab his opponent's legs to get their backs on the ground, then proceeding to step on their neck/chin, then letting go of the legs to just jump on their stomachs. The short, simlish ramble he'd shout as he did this made it both funny and feel like he's really pissed off.
As always, it is none other than a masterpiece of some kind, but this time having regard to Shinnok, that's great. I was rather surprised having heard of me when it came to the instant teleport technique, and I feel flattered about it. Appreciate it!
My sleeping schedule was already screwed up thanks to the SF6 demo, and now this drops to keep me awake further. MKX's Necromancer Shinnok is probably the most fun I've ever had with an NRS character, alongside MK11 Shang Tsung and MK9 Liu Kang, so I'm interested in knowing how good that variation was. Thanks for doing these, they're always a treat to watch.
It doesn't matter how many videos Ketchup and Mustard puts out, the muscle memory of the side step block during the 3D era will never not look absolutely goofy.
The thought occurs to me, what if in MK4 you change to Kai's moveset as Shinnok, change to the handstand stance, then let the timer on the moveset run out, what happens?
Bone Shaper has quickly become one of my favourite characters to use I play super casual so its mix of 50/50’s, the re-stand with F22 1+2 and zoning is up my alley Plus I just think the weapon is super cool
AI Shinnok in MK4 doesn't even use the morphs. Very lame. It would've been cool to see an AI abuse that mechanic in a flawless manner a la MK1 Shang Tsung.
Shinnok is my Favorite MK Villain and seeing how much He changed Over the Years is Fascinating that I have to say Imposter is my Favorite Variation,Hope and Pray The Fallen Elder God returns in MK12 with Upgraded Movesets.
I guess N64 Shinnok was that more user friendly as the announcer would call the name of the character you morph as (say I did B,B,F+HK the announcer will say "Liu Kang") and would say "Shinnok" when you went back to Shinnok. But yeah he unfortunately remained a Shang Tsung bootleg in MK4.
I love Aris showing up like Mufasa xDD Great video. I've always loved Shinnok as a character. My favorite appearance of his is actually from Mythologies even though he isn't playable. I wish they would've leaned into that "Emperor Palpatine" look in later installments. I hope they bring him back one day even if he isn't the main threat. The concept of a fallen elder god is so cool but they still haven't quite stuck the landing with him. PS. Please make a Dark Rift video one day
really cool video, I really love your channel. I started to fall in love with mortal kombat thanks to your analysis. I was wondering could you make a video about Raiden's competitive history?
I remember Shinnok was one of my mains. I loved all of his variations but yeah Impostor was his best. I remember if Impostor mimicked Kotal Kahn, you get his slam ability. I forget the combo string but if you did that, followed by his slam, to his X-ray you got like 85% damage. I pulled that off once online before and had the guy rage quit on me. That was awesome.
I didn't know until I was older that people didn't like Shinnok. I always liked him, and I figured it was normal for fighting game sequels to have new final bosses.
The problem with Shinnok was that he had no moves of his own, plus he's a normally playable character. Before MK4, we had Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn and those characters hit hard. Shang Tsung's morphing in MK1 was broken because not only could he chose _when_ to undo his morph and turn into someone else on the spot, but he ignored frame cycles while doing so. Then you have Shao Kahn and his stunlocking Shoulder Charge and physical attacks that send you across the screen Shinnok had none of that. It's even worse considering he was the final boss of Mythologies sub-Zero, yet had his own moveset with absolutely zero mimicking involved
Ah Shinnok when I casually played MKX at Middle school age(I’m not joking. This game was at this time keeping me playing from how the gameplay felt. Still I sucked as the only thing I could do with meter was attempt X rays which are the entire meter for a single roided up hit or just breaker.) was the character who’s impostor variant eluded me. I just played an agressive manner mainly using normals to short combo hit and run.
@@saidi7975 quan chi literally had his first appearance in defenders of the realm where he was a doofy idiot before his mythologies and mk4 debut Tho at least he has something going unlike shinnok who's been lame minute 1
Small correction regarding the MK4 section but the announcer actually calls out the name of the fighter Shinnok mimics when he changes and then says Shinnok when it ends
I really want a Kompetitive History of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and other klassic characters. They'd definitely be long videos, but they would definitely be enjoyable.
Crazy for how many characters MKX became such a glowup in terms of competitive strength after literally years of being a total joke or simply unremarkable. Then X releases and like half the roster is tournament viable. Compare that to how 9 panned out
Tbh I would say shinnoks morph ability is more sneaky as your opponent won't know what move set you have until you use a special move so catching your opponent by surprise is more likely
I may be wrong, but wasn't Shinnoks morph in the console version of MK4 identified by the announcer saying the name of the character you currently are or yourself when it ends? Haven't played MK4 in 8 years so I'm fuzzy on the deets
Interesting journey this character has had. I must admit that high level shinnok gameplay was always entertaining. I hope Johnny cage will soon receive a competitive history!
Imposter Shinnok is definitely one of my favorite fighting game characters ever. Nothing is as satisfying as stealing an opponent's move and performing one of their brutalities with it.
Not to mention the absolutely demented setups you can do with air teleport, which is an Imposter only move for some reason 😅
Agreed. Even the face rip brutality itself where he literally just steals the opponents face and uses it as a "mask" is super cool. Imposter Shinnok is my main in MKX. Always love playing him
Insta-air Teleport is so fun😤
@@stressedrex Oh, how I miss the face rip. I took a screenshot whenever I caught someone online with it

I mean he is kinda a severed head so maybe in Kang’s new world he could show up?
Dudes legit gone now. Least he should be because Kang made sure of it
Mk1: and then there's Shinnok, he's dead
