Good trick but it needs improvisation: You used basically formula, (a+b) square - 2ab to get (a)sq + (b)sq, Similarly (a+b) cube - 3ab(a+b) to get (a)cube + (b)cube, if you will explain these formulae then it wud be easy for students to relate it and memorise.
Only you have raised valid point, 2ab, but in question value of ab not given. Procedure is taught, is not correct. You should go with genuine method /formula.
