My 12 yr old grandson is autistic and he fell in love with building doing 2 of these benches for his Mom . Thank you so much for sharing these videos They turned out Beautifully
Team, I have to apologize. I totally grabbed this idea years ago and put a beautiful bench outside in our townhouse community but forgot to drop a comment. It’s added an incredible amount of warmth and character to the common area. Thank you so much for everything.
Made these except in 8 foot for my gym. Followed your instruction but added a leg in the middle. They came out great. Thanks for this video. Saved me hundreds.
If you’re using any softwood (pine, for, etc) the stain will absorb in patchy areas. That can be great if you want the rustic look in the video. If your space requires something with a more even look, apply pre-stain conditioner to your wood. It will allow the stain to absorb evenly, and give you a great showroom type look. Also make sure to sand, sand, sand, and sand some more in gradually increasing grit if you want a more polished look. Great bench, great plans, great videos!
This is a cute simple design, and I appreciate your efforts in making the video. One big thing I didn't see is anywhere you screwed you NEED wood glue. The screws are going to loosen up over time and technically they're only there to hold tight until the glue sets and makes the full bond. I've learned this the hard way on other projects. Anyone wanting to make this, use glue on any surface that you have held together with screws.
@@faithchamness5810The glue will help tremendously but if you're looking to get a little fancy you can use dowels as a joiner between the each of the 2x8 boards. It's a classic/strong/cheap way or doing it. But your holes nee to be precise, so that can be harder than other methods. If you don't have a router or a table saw to create a tongue and groove, or a biscuit joiner. It's the way to go. Just remember, put glue in the holes and on the dowels themselves. Then clamp them together for at least 15min but I normally wait overnight before working with it to give the glue time to really set up. Also, you can't in this design, but if you have a different style legs, then you can gusset them with a little triangle of wood to add to the lateral support.
I wish to pay you guys a compliment. You both are very good at showing people, who may not have much money to spend, exactly how to make/build some really nice pieces for their home that are very simple and easy for them to build, without buying a lot of expensive tools. When I say this, I'm thinking of young couples who are just starting out and trying to furnish their new home or apartment. Your videos are the best. Keep up your good work.

Thank you so much for making this so easy. Everything is so clear. I just built 2 benches for the fire pit. Now I'm hooked on building this kind of projects around my house. Best video ever!
Used this to make a breakfast nook. Added backs to the benches and used this same design for a table. Turned out perfectly and only took an hour. And this is my first diy! Please keep sharing. I love it!
Just got done building mine. Followed instructions all the way. I also added an additional 2x4 (44 inch long) between the bottom legs. Thanks for great video :). Will say pre-stain took me about 2 hrs. Still fun and simple
Very Simple. Very easy. Very straightforward. Very well done. Anyone could have benches for a patio party in no time at all....and very cheaply. I like it.

It’s called a 15 minute bench because that’s about how long it will last. Lol! Decorative use only, I doubt seriously that this will hold up to any real use.
My husband and I made one today. The bench has turned out to look fantastic. We are extremely happy with it. Thank you for your amazing tutorial video !
Hey just want to thank you guys for this video and bench idea. I've been making and selling dozens of these in my area. It's been a real help getting my woodworking hustle off the ground. Keep up the great work!
I JUST completed this project today(10/23/18) to go with my farmhouse table. I will make another bench tomorrow. Thanks for these great videos. My total price was $18.76. The most expensive part was the screws. If not for that I would have come in under $10 since I already had sandpaper and stain from when I did the table. For this job Home Depot did all of my cuts for free.
New subscriber and only took up diy after retiring so still learning here..love your vids...so easy to follow..clear instructions..AND no talking...just wonderful!!!!!
Great easy to follow instructions. I think I can make one. My granddog will be 16 yrs old in Sept. I am going to (try) and make one, but I will be adding a foam/pad cover to the top so it's softer for my granddog. Now to see get my supplies ready! Thank You!

*TopFineWoodworking. Com* is a fantastic website about wood working. I took various classes as well as finished a one year diploma in carpentry at a local tech college; this is much better than any book I worked out of during those lessons. It explains everything regarding woodworking as well as complements it with helpful photos.?
I thought I'd throw my two cents in. I made two of the benches. I'm pleased with them. I put four coats of water based spar polyurethane on them after sanding and rounding the edges a bit. I received a few critiques about my work not rising to fine cabinetry, but I wasn't making a Hepplewhite sideboard. I wanted some inexpensive benches to place next to a campfire that might get left out in the rain a couple times. The low cost, and ease of construction really appealed to me. I thank you for posting the video and I thought it was shot very well. Me? I'm a belt and suspenders sort of guy so I put glue on the 2X4 pieces before putting the screws in, and I used a finishing nail to hold the pieces together where I wanted them before pre-drilling the holes for the deck screws I used. I hope no one perceives these suggestions as criticisms, because as I said, I liked the video and it inspired me to make THEIR version of a bench instead of one of the other 6 or 7 benches shown on youtube.
capnbobretired I am thinking of making this bench. Like you, I too found this version much simpler than other videos on youtube. However, I wish to know whether this will hold up in strength, over the years or not. How much load can it hold? Most importantly, whats your opinion on it, since you've already made this.
I think that's the important thing to remember. This is not some bench that we are going to sell at a trade show for hundreds of dollars. It is a simple bench that we might use on the patio or fireplace area, and it might even get left outside in the weather a lot. Or it might be used to put plants on it, so that we raised up the plants by about 16" instead of having them on the ground. As such, this kind of quick design for 15-30 mins of cutting and construction time, is quite useful.
@@odessy0000 Hi. I don' know about total load but I have two benches I use regularly at my kitchen table. It can easily hold 450 lbs. at least. It can probably hold much more but I have never had more than two adults on a bench at one time.
@@odessy0000 I weigh in over 350 lbs. After 2 years I am having to go back and use lag bolts from the top of the bench to get a better bite into the legs. The screws and glue did not give enough bite and the legs separated from the bottom side of the bench. The poly urethane is holding up well. I am not as pleased with the design, but then maybe big guys should look to another design.
I'm someone who built something similar, and want to point out something. When you buy stock 2x4 or 2x6, they are not always flat, and may be different widths. You want to make sure you use ones that are as flat as possible, or you will need a planer (expensive) to flatten them. Secondly, make a cross brace. Not having it is pretty, but in terms of functionality, you will get some wobble if you don't cross brace the legs, even simple small ones from the side of the leg to the seat (45 degrees).
Nice job! I am a beginner and this looks fun. I might use pocket screws on the legs, countersink bit for the bench seat and add a third leg. My friends and I are a bit heft so the bench will have to put in some work!
I would like to thank you for your easy to build DIY videos I was inspired by you to build two bench's for my Deck and backyard and they came out great.
Thanks, you all do simple projects that are beautiful. And it appears that you all are dog people which makes it more enjoyable to watch. Thanks for sharing.
I love your videos I am so inspired glad I found you on UA-cam. I am making a table for my plants. I needed something small enough to put between my couch and window. I got a piece of scrap wood for free, and had the store cut legs for me. Glad I kept all my scrap pieces they will come in handy. I wasn’t quite sure how I would put it together until I found your videos. I will be putting it together this week. Thank you both!
Another great idea for my deck. I will need to replace the 2x4 legs to 2x6. A lot of friends and family have big guts and butts. 😳 Thank you, for all you great ideas. 👍
I love your DIY videos, just so simple and doesn't require all the things like the kreg jig kits (will purchase later on), excessive tools and equipment. Your videos are so helpful, with the cut list and material list so easily put I just took it straight to the store to get it cut. I built the industrial farm table and I receive so many compliments on it. Thank you!
Michael Montemayor Yeah that's a good idea, I don't have one at the moment so I love the simplicity of their tutorials until I decide to get one. Try it for sure!
Hey guys, new subscriber here. I just love your videos and I can't wait to see more! Last week I didn't even have the confidence to hammer some nails and now I'm planning on making some planter boxes and buying a drill - you make the projects very simple for beginners like me. Keep it up!
For once, I actually watched an informational video and made this bench. I had to modify the design, but I did it for the same price, but it took me an hour instead of 15 minutes. This is a great video and thank you for listing the size of the cuts.
Great work! Lot of haters out there. But the stuff you build is about 100X better than the particle board junk you'd get in a department store. Looks pretty good too. But I think a basic Kreg jig (or cheaper knock-off, mine was $26) would open up a lot of doors for you (pun intended).

I just built this today. I went to Lowe's. The 2-8-8 was $6.04, a 2-4-12 (which was 4' longer than I needed) was $5.58 I just asked them to cut me the pieces. I bought a sanding block and some 2 1/2" screws. Not expensive at all. It's not "perfect" due to warping in the 2x8 that I picked, but it's a nice solid bench that I'm using in my bedroom, and as someone with very limited woodworking skills, I'm pleased with the result.
I don't have the itemized receipt from my trip that day to Lowe's, but the total for my trip that day was $25.41 I got all of the wood, a box of 2 1/2" construction screws, a sanding block and some 220 grit sandpaper for that price. I think I also bought a spray bottle that day too (around $5?), but I can't be sure. If you just buy the wood and screws for the bench, it should be about $17 depending on your local prices. I returned on a different trip to get stain, paint brush, tarp etc. because I will be using those items on the pieces that I build later.
I just did this project and it was less than $20. Benches made from solid wood are way more expensive than that to buy. It really was a cheap and easy project.
This is my first time building anything.. I was not sure I could stain as well as you did, so I just stained the legs and covered the top with foam and an old curtain.. thanks for the clear instructions!
me and the wife got tired of paying contractors and sometimes they never showed up to work. we said to hell with it and bought a miter saw, table saw, nail gun and other stuff. the rest is history. doing our own things now
I hear you. My wife and I went through the same thing. I have never seen an industry with more slackers and irresponsible people. You can definitely do things faster, better, and more intelligently without most construction workers. There are good ones out there, but they are far and few between.
Love it! 🔥 Many times we're just paying people for the convenience anyway. So, when the convenience is gone what's the point? We can do a lot of the things we shell out money for...plus some.
Im going to use this as a template for my weight bench. Only I'll add a center support cause I weigh 200lbs. Just add foam and staple some black vinyl over it. Thanks rehab team. Nice Dewalt saw by da way
this design is the gift that keeps on giving. I modified it AGAIN and made an end table. I cut the 2x8s to 2 feet instead of four. Basically I halved the bench. I also put one of the 2x8s at the bottom of the bench. It fits perfectly as a shelf for extra storage. I put it between the holes made by the legs of the bench...ahem. I mean end table.
That music is always so relaxing and I love you guys and Henry but you guys make building so easy I bought an abandoned gutted out house and I've been doing everything by myself and you guys have helped me tremendously I am now about to build a deck redo a sectional for outside and for sure build some of those benches for outside thank you guys so much for helping us out here with our projects
Thanks im going to make this to put infront of my sliding door i will be using it as a plant staand i looked into buying one but they are like $150+ its ridiculous.
I made this from scrap wood at the barn for a bench in the tack room. Since the ground was uneven, I put the bottom cross piece up 6 inches. I also put the legs 6 inches from the edge. It turned out really nice. The top is some aged brown old fencing. Every one loves it. We have a sitting place in the tack room now. Will paint the barn logo on top.
I want to make one of these benches with my son. :) How much did it cost you? I just watched the video and commented precisely on how the price must have gone up because of inflation.
Nothing just the longer legs but for something like that I’d make an extra leg box thing for the middle and I’d use glue on everything as well as the screws just to insure structure and improve longevity
Very good video. Successfully completed one bench; I'm going to build two more. Nowadays (2022), materials cost more like $21 (inflation and 11% Cook County sales tax). On serious note, caution against using miter saw on the ground - the manufacturer strongly recommends clamping to bench and standing up for safety reasons.
The step by step explanation with measurements really helped make sense of each thing you’re doing. Really great attention to detail for us newbies. Thanks so much!

nice but you should add some cross or corner bracing for stability and support so as not to collapse.
I am actually doing it but with a 2 X 5 1/2 X 8. Your video was very clear cut. - Thanks great job.
I am going to use this idea for an entryway table. Will just make the legs taller. 😊👍 Thanks for such quick, easy and beautiful project tutorials.❤
This was very simple and helpful. I am a beginner woodworker and I am excited to try this one day. Thank you
Nice job! I am a beginner and this looks fun. I might use pocket screws on the legs, countersink bit for the bench seat and add a third leg. My friends and I are a bit heft so the bench will have to put in some work!
So freaking easy! If I don’t have a saw will like Lowe’s cut it down to the sizes you mentioned??
I would like to thank you for your easy to build DIY videos I was inspired by you to build two bench's for my Deck and backyard and they came out great.
Thanks, you all do simple projects that are beautiful. And it appears that you all are dog people which makes it more enjoyable to watch. Thanks for sharing.
Omg, what a beautiful bench....I would marry that bench...
That sounds like a great project, thanks for watching!
Another great idea for my deck. I will need to replace the 2x4 legs to 2x6. A lot of friends and family have big guts and butts. 😳 Thank you, for all you great ideas. 👍
F Jon Big guts and butts :-D Why be thinner when you can get more dinner?
Easy, simple, and looks great! I would recommend adding aprons, or at the very least, heavy-duty angle brackets for lateral support.
Thank you!
how is your table holding up? any issues?
Michael Montemayor It's great! my brother uses it to do his homework almost daily with no problems
...hope that help :)
Im thinking of using kreg jig to add a little more support
But I like there projects... They keep it simple
Michael Montemayor Yeah that's a good idea, I don't have one at the moment so I love the simplicity of their tutorials until I decide to get one. Try it for sure!
Thank you for this easy design, now i can make enough outdoor seating for parties!
Hey guys, new subscriber here. I just love your videos and I can't wait to see more! Last week I didn't even have the confidence to hammer some nails and now I'm planning on making some planter boxes and buying a drill - you make the projects very simple for beginners like me. Keep it up!
Just built this. Awesome. Simple. Only downside is I’m going to have to make more for friends who like it
For once, I actually watched an informational video and made this bench. I had to modify the design, but I did it for the same price, but it took me an hour instead of 15 minutes. This is a great video and thank you for listing the size of the cuts.
Love videos that teach without talking. Great
Great work! Lot of haters out there. But the stuff you build is about 100X better than the particle board junk you'd get in a department store. Looks pretty good too. But I think a basic Kreg jig (or cheaper knock-off, mine was $26) would open up a lot of doors for you (pun intended).
Which jig?
Yall are amazing, the best about showing instructions and what to buy. I love your videos. Amazing couple, keep up the good work and keep those videos coming, you make building look so easy. Love your little dog. Have a safe and wonderful holiday. I don't watch alot of videos with no talking because I don't understand what they are doing they speed up the videos so fast it is hard to follow along
I love your videos you tell everything you need to buy and we can actually see you working so us newbies can understand. Love to see your smiling faces. Keep God first in your life. God Bless. I am going to watch all your videos and I have subscribed, don't want to miss a single one!!!!!😁😁
Nice. Simple. Easy. Cheap. My kind of DIY. Very inspiring. Thanks guys.
Thanks for watching!
I just built this today. I went to Lowe's. The 2-8-8 was $6.04, a 2-4-12 (which was 4' longer than I needed) was $5.58
I just asked them to cut me the pieces. I bought a sanding block and some 2 1/2" screws. Not expensive at all.
It's not "perfect" due to warping in the 2x8 that I picked, but it's a nice solid bench that I'm using in my bedroom, and as someone with very limited woodworking skills, I'm pleased with the result.
great what was total cost
I don't have the itemized receipt from my trip that day to Lowe's, but the total for my trip that day was $25.41 I got all of the wood, a box of 2 1/2" construction screws, a sanding block and some 220 grit sandpaper for that price. I think I also bought a spray bottle that day too (around $5?), but I can't be sure. If you just buy the wood and screws for the bench, it should be about $17 depending on your local prices.
I returned on a different trip to get stain, paint brush, tarp etc. because I will be using those items on the pieces that I build later.
Best bench content for our needs in lake cabins. Thank you truly ❤
Here in May of 2021 you’ll need to take a loan out to buy that wood.
😂 wood literally cost me $12
I just did this project and it was less than $20. Benches made from solid wood are way more expensive than that to buy. It really was a cheap and easy project.
Support small business go to a lumber/saw mill, instead!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
🤣🤣
Thank you so so much! I just did this for our laundry room which has shiplap oddly and it looks great 👍 ! My wife loves it!
Would this work if I wanted to make the bench 5 feet long instead of 4? So if I got a 2x8x10 feet and cut that in half?
Probably you would just need a sorry in the middle to prevent bowing
Perfect project to show grandson!! Thanks
Love it! I saw already others asking what is this beautiful color called? It would be nice to know. Thank you!
I believe they use Honey 272 most of the time.
Me 2
Same!
I'm going through the same experience and thinking of start doing by myself. What wood you guys wood recommend for this bench? I'm planning for Patio.
I just made one. That was super easy and it looks great. It definitely costs more than $15 though (Melbourne Australia).
Thank you for the video
Keeping it simple, that's what I'm talking about!
Im going to use this as a template for my weight bench. Only I'll add a center support cause I weigh 200lbs. Just add foam and staple some black vinyl over it. Thanks rehab team. Nice Dewalt saw by da way
I love it! It is so simple. Thanks for sharing
this design is the gift that keeps on giving.
What a cute addition! Also adds stability to the seat 👍 Thanks for the idea!
I know this was 5 yrs ago...but...would u happen to be around to send pic of how u added table? My fam wants one to put out at cemetery when we visit.
Ok so I am about to get the supplies and record following this DIY. Let’s see how long it takes me 😬😜
The internet is waiting , Sir/Madam.
Oh that's awesome! Congrats on the new house and I'm glad we could help out in a small way!
Thanks im going to make this to put infront of my sliding door i will be using it as a plant staand i looked into buying one but they are like $150+ its ridiculous.
Oh nice! Great idea.
I been watching this video for a while… I love it simple easy just perfect 👍
Glad you like it!
Just built it today, pretty easy. I did use 3" screws.
That was awesome! Thanks so much!
p.s. your dog is cool too!
You guys are the best... minimal tools...killer furniture!
U guys do some incredible and simple work! Nice job u go girl😉
It's amazing what 7 years can do to the price of wood!!!!!!
I want to make one of these benches with my son. :) How much did it cost you? I just watched the video and commented precisely on how the price must have gone up because of inflation.
I need to make them 24" high for the table..what materials might change instead of the 15 1/2 thanks
On serious note, caution against using miter saw on the ground - the manufacturer strongly recommends clamping to bench and standing up for safety reasons.
took me hours, but voilà, my first woodworking project - done, many obstacles included :)))
this was the best video I watched to make a bench for me at my backyard. thank you
Absolutely perfect, the bench is also quite nice.
The step by step explanation with measurements really helped make sense of each thing you’re doing. Really great attention to detail for us newbies. Thanks so much!
Thanks for the vid! Made one last night, these plans were VERY helpful!!
Thank you so much! for sharing your project, its been a while that I am trying to find out how to make a bench, this is fantastic, easy and I love it. 👍💖💖💖💖💖
I love the simplicity of this project. However it took 2 hours, not 15 minutes. lol and that's before staining. ;)
I love these projects...Even though they are basic you can go further with then with some L brackets, dowels, glue, and other add on`s...EXCELLENT...
I'd love to see you guys do a hall tree with cubbies! Love all your videos 😊
