Me thinking "Wasn't there quite a lot of pages they flicked over in this diary?", then hovering over the scroll bar and seeing you'd still be on it 17 minutes later had me buckling in for the ride.

The injured dog reference comes from a proposal for calculating longitude.
Sir Kenneth Digby proposed that a wounded dog be placed on each ship. A bandage or knife associated with the wound would remain at the home port before being plunged into the ‘Powder of Sympathy’ at midday. The effect of the powder would cause pain in the dog’s wound thousands of miles away causing it to howl and thus providing a ‘canine time signal’ from which the longitude could be determined on the ship.

William Ambrose Cowley is on Wikipedia under the name Ambrose Cowley. He named it Pepys Island after Samuel Pepys who was the Secretary to the Admiralty. Pepys is known for the diaries he wrote between 1660 - 1669.
Fascinating video, thanks for sharing. Hope you're well 😀

I'm always happy you take the time to appreciate the many jokes in map men videos. I think you're the only one to notice on one video Jay's head turned in a reflection but he didn't move his head. Some are only on for a split second but you appreciate their craft.

I have been waiting for your reaction to this one. Knowing the Map Men's propensity for putting in hidden jokes and knowing that you read them all, I knew that this would be hilarious. It wouldn't surprise me if they have seen your reactions and thought "Right! We'll give him something to read."

I can't believe that you left out their advert. Not only was it one of their best, it helps to push traffic to their affiliates and make them money which they've put lots of effort into earning.

I think You might have missed a couple of jokes within jokes with the island names.
    Tarquin Fin-tim-lin-bin-whin-bim-lim-bus-stop-F'tang-F'tang-Olé-Biscuit barrel
is a Monty Python reference from the Election night special Sketch where Tarquin was the name of the 'Silly' candidate
Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzellan bogen by the sea was a song by Max Bygraves, an English comedian, singer, actor and variety performer from the 1940's-1980's ( but you're forgiven as I don't think he was known in America).

If you look on the map above the mug on the desk between the two Map Men when they are in their office you can see the top of Scotland, and above it a large island that doesn't exist. Well, actually it does. Sort of. It was known about by the Ancient Greeks and Romans and was depicted on a map by a Dutch cartographer in 1539. However, nobody knew for sure where the island was, what shape it was and what size it was. So the cartographer guessed and got all three aspects wrong. The island is Thule (Tile on the map) and was deemed a place of great spiritual significance. So much so that the Nazis came to the conclusion that it was the origin island of the Aryans. Nutters.
The thing is, just because something isn't there doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Somewhere else. Thule, being a Nordic term would likely be pronounced "Thula", and, was described in ancient times as being the most remote part of the British Isles. But instead of this "British Atlantis" being a large island directly North of Scotland, it seems that it was a much smaller island and one of the remotest of the Shetland Island chain. Foula. Which very much exists today. The phonetic similarity of Thula and Foula makes this seem likely and there are also ancient carved stones of some significance on the island. Suggesting that it may have been a place of pilgrimage. Interestingly, Wikipedia doesn't link Thule and Foula, but there are several other sources that do. Thought I'd mention this to keep within the general spirit of the video.

You missed a joke. But probably not obvious to an American and it was blink and you'll miss it. The 'phantom' Island of Jersey, 1360 - present (English Channel). Not phantom. So I believe. Only have Bergerac to base my knowledge on and that's telly so could have been fake. 🤷‍♀️
