I was born in Madeira, I've lived in Canada since the age of 9. Love my history, there is so much that Madeirians contributed world wide. Good job!

As a madeiran, I enjoyed and agreed with your explanation. In the distant past, Madeira was somewhat isolated from the main land Portugal and the madeirans didn't enjoy the same standard of life as in the mainland. During hard times, maderans looked at the horizon as if it held a promise of distant lands where they could find a better living. Ships from Europe would sail to Funchal before crossing the Atlantic and that's the way that madeirans crossed the Atlantic and reached the Caribbean islands. Brave people that came to a land where they had to fend for themselves, not speaking the local language and having to adapt to a new culture. A lot has changed. Madeira is now a safe haven for many foreigners looking for a new beginning in a place with great climate, high mountains, blue, clean ocean, tropical fruits, lots of flowers and, most of all, friendly people. I love Madeira my HOME SWEET

I am really happy you made this video, my family came over long ago to Guyana 🇬🇾, and Trinidad 🇹🇹, on both sides, on my father’s side- Rodrigues and on my mother’s side also Rodrigues and Pereira, I have learned we were Jews who were forced to convert to Christianity a few hundred years ago

There history in Portugal where some 5000 Jews went missing I learned this whilst touring there in 2013(. Born in Madeira and raised in Australia from the age of five), it is said that any surname that ends in IRA is of Jewish decent my surname is FIGUEIRA hence why you have Jewish background

  • @benayahbendavidgavinrodrig1017

BTW , a little correction my brother, Madeira is not off the coast of mainland Portugal 🇵🇹, It’s off the coast of Africa

Indeed it is to be technical and precise. I was just referring to it in relation to Portugal, that the island is offshore, 500 miles southwest.

Hi there, I was wondering if you have some information on Madeirans migrating to South Africa in the mid 20th Century?

Sooooo interesting! I live in Lisbon and I was born here, but my parents and also all my grandparents were from Madeira. Many of my cousins still live in the island, some are in Brazil and a few in South Africa. My father didn't want to keep his father name, for reasons that don't matter now, but my paternal grandfather surname was "de Freitas". Very Madeiran as you noticed. My maternal grandfather surname is "de Góis". Nice research (and work) you are doing. All our family is white, but anyhow I felt you so close as if we were also family. Best wishes.

Thank you so much for viewing and than you so much for your compliment and response. Yes, this an interesting thing, to be honest. It is my dream to see it get some more publicity and I hope to lead that project. I just think Madeirans get enough credit for spreading the Portuguese presence because much of the outside focus about Portugal, at least in the Caribbean and Africa, is that they were ONLY colonizers and slave owners because of their earlier chapter on those two matters. The Madeiran migration took place, ironically, while slavery was still going on in independent Brazil, a whole interesting subject on its own.

Oh, I am definitely aware of this, and that started in 1419, but the Madeirans who traveled to the Caribbean and beyond emigrated to those places 400 years later. Sure, many could trace their ancestry to mainland Europe, but by then, Madeira had shaped its own history and identity to stand alone, right?

Spanish and Portuguese Jews, also called Western Sephardim, Iberian Jews, or Peninsular Jews are a distinctive sub-group of Sephardic Jews who are largely descended from Jews who lived as New Christians in the Iberian Peninsula during the immediate generations following the forced expulsion of unconverted Jews from Spain in 1492 and from Portugal in 1497.

Thank you very much, Elizabeth. Yes, I am aware of all of this, as I am a student of history.
Yes, at least one of my Madeiran ancestor was Jewish. This was told to me through oral history and confirmed by a DNA test. Thank you for the information.

I am so happy the truth is coming out , my family suffered the same faith , they were Sephardic Jews who were forced to convert to Christianity, and up to today the places where they first settled in Guyana 🇬🇾 are called GHETTOS, BTW THEY WERE NEVER ACCEPTED AS EUROPEANS IN GUYANA 🇬🇾, AND EVEN NOW IN GUYANA, PORTUGUESE AND EUROPEANS ARE SEEN AS TWO DIFFERENT RACES OF PEOPLE ( THE FACT IS THAT THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WHO CAME THERE WERE JEWS / NEW CHRISTIANS )
