- It is often thought that science doesn't merely describe and predict what happens in the world, it also gives us explanations of why things happen. What is a scientific explanation? This video outlines the deductive-nomological model of explanation, proposed by Carl Hempel, which claims that to explain X is to show how X can be derived from statements of laws of nature plus initial conditions.

Thank you for this explanation. I'm in grade 12 in Egypt and I've been taking philosophy and logical thinking for about two years now. With my finals in just a few weeks, I needed an in depth explanation of this model with more examples. Thanks a lot!
You are incredibly lucky to learn this stuff in grade 12 - I hope you never let it go!
A remarkable explanation of what the deductive-nomological model is. Thank you.
MAN!!!! SUPER CLEARRR!!! THANK U VERY VERY MUCH!!! U truly make my life as a Philosophy of Science student much easier!
Thank you for saving my midterm exam
Great video. Quite simplistic explanation (pun intended) you are using, which is, of course, a great thing. Kudos!
Your video was very helpful! Thank you :3
I just learned about it and then you post video about it. Strange
Amazing video!
Very helpful video..👍
Idk how I would have done my degree without you haha !!! Long Live Kane B
This is also known as the covering law model
Спасибо!
Thanks again. By the way, is there any particular reason you've become so interested in philosophy of science?
I've always been interested in the sciences. These days I spend quite a lot of time reading biology and astronomy in particular, and it seems natural to try to relate that material to philosophy since I'm a philosophy student.
Also, due to the fact that the sciences are clearly the best way of developing an understanding of the world, many traditional philosophical questions have become questions in the philosophy of science. Epistemological questions about how much access we have to the world and whether we can know about the world beyond our experience - these days, that's the scientific realism debate. Metaphysical questions about causation, laws of nature, reductionism, etc, require engaging with science.
is this all kane cares for? how about the philosophy of love , theology ,aesthetics ?
science lacks razzle dazzle factor?
Ed Thoreum Kane did a fairly extensive series on aesthetics a while back.
