It annoys the crap out of me that phones do this. I could see why it would do it on the screen while recording, but actually recording it that way is pretty ridiculous.

It's good that people get to see things like this and come to understand that German isn't an angry language. Feli speaks very clearly too and makes it easier to hear each word separately. It reminded me of being a kid in the 1970s, and the kids we usually played with (Kretschmann), their parents had moved them all here from Germany. Their mom only spoke German, so the kids helped me learn a little bit of German, "She's asking if you would like a soda.", and how to respond, "Bitte." and "Vielen Dank.", stuff like that. She was very nice, like Feli.
I think Ben did fantastic! Kept up his humor and spirits despite the self doubts early on. Big props to him for getting through it and loads of support as he continues to learn!

This brings back many memories for me. When I first met my wife 35 years ago in Lima Peru, she knew no English and I knew practically zero Spanish. Although I'm fluent in English and German she was not. She was only fluent in Spanish. But somehow we managed to communicate and we fell madly in love with one another and 6 months later we married in Lima, Peru. We have four children all married and so far five grandchildren. She became fluent in English over the years and I am becoming fluent in Spanish. Love knows no boundaries or limitations and truly is the universal language that transcends words.
You don't have to answer if you don't want but I've always been curious about stories like this You guys didn't speak the same language - what was the draw for trying? Obviously it worked out great in the end, but why did you make the effort to talk to her? Were you just tryna improve your Spanish or?
OMG! You are both adorable! Ben did really well! I'm impressed, honestly. I love that he's taking lessons through a conversation partner with similar interests. That's cool too! Great job, enjjoyed the video immensely. I was smiling and laughing the whole time!
A day like this may be frustrating for Ben, but if you do it regularly, it‘s the best way for him to learn. I used to speak English with my wife from Nordfriesland on the weekends, and we spoke Plattdüütsch on Tuesdays. (Yeah, a guy from Ohio can learn Platt, is doch keen Hexenwaark.) I only ever spoke English with my kids who were growing up in Germany. Keep it going and hang in there, Ben, you‘ll be fluent in bairisch before you know it, gell?
As a German myself this was hilarious to watch but also incredibly sweet. I've gotten so used to you talking in English that i did a double take when you spoke German. Another fun thing i am fluent in German with being German myself yet i found myself looking at the English translations anyway.
This is such a nice change of content from you Feli. Its fun seeing you and Ben in a more natural setting where we can see how Deutsch is naturally spoken. Feli is such an amazing person. Keep at it 🎉🎉 Also it was nice seeing my self taught Deutsch made me understand about half what was being said without subtitles 😊 🇩🇪!!
I loved it, and it shows that your boyfriend respects your mother tongue. And German is really hard for people so far away from a German speaking country. I must say my deepest respect to Ben for doing this a whole day.
Ben is so privileged! He has the best teacher, I would love having the same opportunity...total immersion in the language and you can ask her anything. That's the best way to learn.
The world needs more wholesome content like this. I haven't taken German in years, but based on context I could follow as well as Ben was. He did great!
I was unsure of how much German I retained from studying, and I'm happy to report that I understood at least as much as Ben, if not a little bit more, haha. This video was really cute and entertaining. Thanks to Ben for allowing himself to look a bit lost in translation.
Loved it. I live in Northern Kentucky and my son lives in Germany. He is in the Army. Knowing you live in my community has always been fun. When you said German Restaurant with H, I knew exactly where. You both are adorable and thanks for sharing with us.
This was fun to watch! I took 4 years of German in school & I found myself remembering a lot of words I completely forgot. This is a cool idea! fantastisch
This was super cute! Ben did great, and he was such a good sport. I can relate to that feeling of relief at the end when he heard English again. ☺️ Both times that I've traveled to other countries that have little to no English speakers, I felt such a sense of relief and relaxation to hear English when I arrived back home. Even if the American airport workers were not as friendly and hospitable 🙈, I was still really happy to hear their voices. That's one of the reasons I really admire it when someone comes to the US, learns English fluently, and loves us enough to stay permanently. What a level of mental fitness you must have! 👏
Ben is great Feli. The fact that he was really cool about the experience shows he really cares about you and is fully involved, invested and committed which to me would be similar to enjoying and respecting your holidays traditions for example. 🖤❤️💛
Hi Feli! Recently found your channel. I am an Australian with German speaking parents. My German is at an intermediate level and i wish my husband would take up German! I have visited Germany many times and get by with my conversational German. I enjoyed this experiment and think you are the cutest couple! Thanks for making such great videos.
I just turned 35 last month. I’ve been learning German for 21 years now. I started in 7th grade. I don’t have anyone to talk to. I watch German tv/UA-cam channels. I Read comics in German. I would expect someone with German-speaking parents to be fluent in German
(Eisbrecher und Rammstein) I think I can understand more than I can speak it. My father would speak to me in German and I would reply in English. I resisted lots as a child in Australia.
@@heidizerbin-collins9495 Eisbrecher kannte ich nicht. Wow. Was für eine Stimme! Ich könnte empfehlen: AnnenMayKantereit, Wir sind Helden, Dota Kehr, Die Toten Hosen, Die Ärzte, Deichkind Klingt alles nicht so heftig wie deine beiden. Aber vielleicht trotzdem gut 😊 ? Ja.
Ben, you are a true legend my friend. So patient and easy going. You were super chill the entire time. Feli, this guy is a freakin’ boss. You should have him on the channel more often! Much love from California!
I feel Ben's struggle! My partner is German, and I moved to Germany to live with her last summer. Thankfully, she and our two roommates do also speak English, but I'm trying very hard to become fluent in German. It's slow progress sometimes, but I use apps on my phone, try to practice casual communication around the house and in our household group texts, and have official studies through Goethe Institut. But I'm still on A1 right now. He does really well!
Try listening a lot on YT videos and movies but with English subtitles so that you will learn by hearing the structure, rhythm and "melody" of German and watching the mouth (pronounciation). You will learn idioms and how to use them in conversations. I am doing the same the other way round with English (as a native German). I have improved passive vocabulary a lot from hearing alone. There are patterns in every language.
He learnt so much German by now! Please continue and it would be so great if you did it like every half a year or so, so you (and we) can compare his development in words and understanding 😊
„15:42“ - „Schulz“ - mitsamt großartiger Geste! Dein Freund kann perfektes deutsch und auch den wiener Dialekt - how to learn austrian german in 2 secounds? - well done! 😀
This is literally how my first day of work in Germany went. I'm volunteering for a year here, and even though I studied a bit of German before I came (A1 level), I was lost on that first day. Only one person at my work speaks English and she only showed me around for an hour before leaving me with a group. Anytime someone spoke to me, I just looked at them helplessly like "I'm trying but I got no idea what you are saying". Luckily, my colleagues were super nice and patient. My german has definetly improved now. Still, there are some days where I can't understand people and feel so lost
The struggle is real! I’ve made several trips to Germany and tried to learn enough to get around as a tourist. I call my language Speisekarte Deutsch since I can usually figure out a menu. A funny story about Ausfahrt. Someone in our driving group wondered why they had never heard of Germany’s apparently largest city: Ausfahrt. It must be huge since all off-ramps went to it 😂
Hi Feli! I used to speak Brasilain Portuguese, but that was many years ago. So I took your advice. Now I'm enrolled at Live XP to revive my Carioca Portuguese. Thank-you. Obrigado. & Danke, mein Freund!
That was a lot of fun to watch. I'm from the US, now living in the Netherlands and learning Dutch. I recognized myself in him, hearing German (or Dutch in my case), understanding it, but responding in English. Thanks for sharing the journey and I look forward to hearing how it's going over time!
"Oider". 😂 Übrigens, Hut ab vor deinen Deutschkenntnissen, Ben. Du machst das fantastisch. 👍
Thought you'd find this interesting: In a recent NALF video, Nick's German girlfriend introduced him to kaserspatzle and he absolutely LOVED it - couldn't get enough! So Feli you might have Ben try some of your favorite German vegetarian dishes - you never know! BTW, thanks for the fun video. 😁
Ben did great! I only recently discovered your channel and I love it! I'm French myself, and I love watching your videos about the differences between German and American cultures, that makes me think about what seems closer to my own culture (and yeah, most of the time I'm feeling closer to the German way, but not always). Also in Middle School (or Junior High? Never knew the difference) I learnt German before I learnt English and by the end of my student years I was way better in German than in English but sadly that's not the case anymore, due to lack of practice I lost all my German vocabulary. But you make me want to learn German again! And last, it's Carglass in French too, and with the same jingle as well! "Carglass répare, Carglass remplace !"
Ben's listening comprehension is amazing! He did great! I don't know any German, but based on the complexity of the English subtitles for the subject matter and grammar and vocabulary I can tell he knows quite a lot and just needs a little more practice with speaking, forming sentence son his own, and to up his vocabulary game a little bit more. But honestly he did really great, languages are hard, and I can't imagine anyone roasting him over such a positive effort.
So nice to hear that he is also seriously trying, The advantage is that there is a german there so that it is a lot easier than having to read it without anyone being there. For us Dutch people who live close to the German border, it's easy anyway.
This was a fantastic video! I understand this as both an American who learned German from a Bavarian and one who lives with family who are either bilingual or only know English. I enjoy the joy you two find with each other and how you support the two languages!!!
Probably one of my fav episodes so far. Some years ago I dated someone who is Chinese and so I started learning what I could of the language. I remember occasions like this trying to keep up with a native speaker... kudos to Ben for doing such a great job. Way better than I did with a Chinese speaker! Note, I've lost most Chinese that I'd learned, but am currently working on learning Spanish... so much easier and less frustrating! lol. If I ever get good at Spanish, I'd love to learn German and Italian at some point... we'll see 🙂 Love your channel Feli... hi from (near) Cleveland!
This makes me feel really good. Im trying to learn German before my trip to Germany and other parts in Europe in 2025 and I barley needed to read the subtitles, I could understand most things just by hearing you speak.
10:40 That's really interesting. I noticed that English speakers often don't hear any difference between German vowels and their corresponding umlauts. They learn learn that "Apfel" means apple (singular) and "Äpfel" means apples (plural), and they feel that there's no way to distinguish them phonetically. It just sounds the same to them. And "Apfel" and "Äpfel" sound so different to native speakers that there's literally no way to confuse them
Fun video. I would like to see a few of these each year. Doing mini-immersions like this are probably very helpful for learning a second language. It helps the student develop their ear for the language through extended exposure.
As a Dutchie I still find it funny that all movies and series are dubbed in Germany and have steady voice overs. In the Netherlands we know all original voices because we use subtitling. Thanks for the great video, I liked it a lot!
As a german i didn't knew that and i have to say: it seems weird to us germans to subtitle all films and series, that would totally fuck me up (would be annoying) :D.
It’s probably really great for learning English , gives you the original feeling of the show, less expensive in post production etc. but not very inclusive. What about people who can’t read so fast or have trouble reading and watching what happens in the show at the same time? Or people who can’t read at all, are disabled, elderly and so on? (Not saying one is better, just wrote down thoughts that crossed my mind)
@@roonilwazlib5402 that is exactly the reason why Germany and France dub over everything. In fact, most European countries do so, besides some Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands and Portugal (as far as I'm aware). We consider ourselves lucky that almost 100% adults are able to read and write. Some exceptions are possible obviously. And we get tought many other languages from a relatively young age as well. Pretty much everyone knows at least one other language.
@@BirteK1975 No one forces you to watch dubs. Plenty of people need dubbing though because they can't read the subtitles or don't speak the other language fluently.
cute... that was fun!! just starting German again a few months ago after doing a full year of German as an elective in University, 35 years ago, so i only caught a few word that I know. I really enjoy your channel. Danke
In my opinion watching TV shows in foreign languages is super helpful. My English improved a lot when I started watching Supernatural and How I Met Your Mother in English instead of German.
As a German language student, I wish I have a German friend doing the same thing to me during the day - speaking only in German to me and correct my mistakes in writing without using any English. In comparison, the strongest reason why I speak Cantonese and Mandarin close to native levels and can read/write a lot of written Chinese is because I grew up not speaking any English at home and the Chinese language schools my parents sent me to when I was a kid also had a "no English allowed during class" rule so that worked for me. That's why I'm confident my German will improve greatly (meaning less likely to forget stuff) if someone spoke only German to me once in a while even here in the USA. :)
My father was in Naval Intelligence, and this was their method of teaching foreign languages. I think they call it "immersion training" or something like that.
There's nothing like learning another language through immersion. It was a great way for myself to understand and at least speak to a certain extent, Mandarin Chinese.
I've been studying German for about three years now and this was such an entertaining video to watch, Feli. Keep bringing content like this, it keeps me motivated!
My cat is also bilingual. He ignores me in both English and German. Oh yeah, and hammer drill is Schlagbohrmaschine. That was one of the first things I learned when I moved to Austria.
Looks like a fun day! I had a great time watching this episode! Thanks for doing it. I would love to see more like this. How about one the next time you both go to Germany? Thanks again!
I once went on a date with an American guy in Europe and we sat down to eat something quick. It was a pretty international place and when we got up there was a group of French women asking if they can take our table. I talked to them in French and then an Austrian guy popped up and asked me the same, so I told him in German that these girls already asked. My date was so impressed by me switching languages that he said he believed I set this all up just to brag 😅
I think that’s fantastic! I’m learning German and want to become proficient in speaking German. I want to learn another language after German. I wish the American education system would push language learning at an early age. I won’t benefit from it but the next generation will.
Bitte mach weiter so. Herzliche Grüße aus Hamburg
I just happened across your channel today, and it's funny because I also live in Cincinnati and my wife is German (technically dual citizen and born in the US, but German was her first language). We just got back from visiting her extended family in Mainz, so I can relate to your boyfriend needing to speak German all day!
Watching TV with subtitles is a very good idea. We do that in Denmark on TV. The original soundtrack is spoken, but with subtitles in Danish. The advantage is that you get the tone and sounds of the foreign language and you slowly add new words to your vocabulary.
I have to say that I really enjoyed the video and I think Ben did a great job understanding you throughout the day. This was a really neat idea and definitely enjoyed watching!
I definitely think Ben did a great job, and it was interesting to hear the both of you with the english words subtitled to learn a little as a viewer as well. I'd love to see more of this!
Funny, how Feli's personality changes a little bit when speaking German. 😜 I think Ben took it really good - always made a relaxed impression in every situation. Of course, you two are soo sweet together... 😁Funny that you are a night owl as well... I behave exactly the same... can't get up early and think clear immediately 😅
I laughed so hard at this video. Watching the live translation, his recognition of the bits/pieces of German to translate and how much you two laughed. I've missed watching your videos Feli, this video is the return for me to watching them more.
Hi Ben, well done! Note: It's the best and funniest way to learn Deutsch! Don't give up! Weitermachen!
Lol. It’s so relatable not hearing the difference between u and ü when it’s in a word. I can hear it if it’s just someone doing the u/ü but in any word it sounds the same to my American ears.
Also glad Ben has the same reaction that I do to getting the many forms of the German “the” wrong. 🙄🙄🙄Der die das dem den des. I make a short “d” sound so ppl can’t hear it properly enough to judge. 😂😂😂😂

Me too! Anytime I try to slip some from my lessons into a conversation with someone they look at me like a weirdo 😂
@matrixmary I agree. I’m American and I use a VPN to listen and read German. I highly recommend it. My German is improving by getting German content.
«The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;
And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;
And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;
And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;
And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;
And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;
And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;
And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;
And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;
And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:
And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;
And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;
And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;
And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;
And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.»
(Gospel - Matthew - Chapter 1)

This brings back many memories for me. When I first met my wife 35 years ago in Lima Peru, she knew no English and I knew practically zero Spanish. Although I'm fluent in English and German she was not. She was only fluent in Spanish. But somehow we managed to communicate and we fell madly in love with one another and 6 months later we married in Lima, Peru. We have four children all married and so far five grandchildren. She became fluent in English over the years and I am becoming fluent in Spanish. Love knows no boundaries or limitations and truly is the universal language that transcends words.
Beautiful 😍
Thats a wonderful story❤
You don't have to answer if you don't want but I've always been curious about stories like this
You guys didn't speak the same language - what was the draw for trying? Obviously it worked out great in the end, but why did you make the effort to talk to her? Were you just tryna improve your Spanish or?

A day like this may be frustrating for Ben, but if you do it regularly, it‘s the best way for him to learn.

Ben’s reaction at 1:46 was probably the most wholesome part of the video!
The struggle is real! I’ve made several trips to Germany and tried to learn enough to get around as a tourist. I call my language Speisekarte Deutsch since I can usually figure out a menu.

Probably one of my fav episodes so far. Some years ago I dated someone who is Chinese and so I started learning what I could of the language.

@@mym284
I am German and I do not think it is weird at all. I hate everything dubbed with a passion!

@@t.l.c7481 I've been trying to do the same but I feel like everything is going over my head because of how quickly they speak, lol
This was lots of fun. You are both good comedians. Ben is a natural in front of the camera.
The old saying is the best way to learn a new language is horizontally (a native speaking boyfriend or girlfriend). :)
My father was in Naval Intelligence, and this was their method of teaching foreign languages. I think they call it "immersion training" or something like that.
20:27 haha „Oida“! 😉😂
There's nothing like learning another language through immersion. It was a great way for myself to understand and at least speak to a certain extent, Mandarin Chinese.
