Working Model of Stephenson's STEAM ENGINE made of GLASS ! Rare!

  • Highlights:
    * The crankshaft is glass. The piston is glass. The counterweight that makes the wheel spin evenly is glass. Imagine that everything is made out of glass.
    * There are no sealants used. All is accomplished by a perfectly snug fit. The gap between the piston and its compartment is so small, that the water that condensates from the steam seals it shut!
    * Notice the elaborate excessive steam exhaust system next to the piston.
    * The piston is the most arduous part to make due to to extreme level of precision needed. Its parts have to be so accurate that no machinery is of use here. The piston and its cylinder must be hand sanded to perfection, and they are very likely to crack in the process! On average, three out of four crack.
This Model of Stephenson's Steam Engine was made in 2008 by master glassblower Michal Zahradník.
Audio: The few seconds of electric guitar at the beginning and the end were sampled from Ivan Chew's track Dollheads (ccmixter.org/fi...) licenced under CC BY 3.0 (href="creativecommons....

It might be because the title is a bit misleading - there's really no such thing as a 'Stephenson steam engine'. He of course designed a famous locomotive, the Rocket, which did work on steam but was not really much like this. Some people (normally me included) are pretty irritated by what they see as clickbait titles - in this case I suppose it's just a language thing and there's no attempt to mislead. And the engine, of course, is really cool. For the avoidance of doubt, I'm a liker, not a disliker.

the real good thing about entropy is this one. i think this is an external combustion engine . it works on the difference in temperature but not with the heat. the heat causes expansion of the air which increases the temperature at the piston. the hot air creates a great difference in temperature when compared room temperature. this causes the piston to move causing mechanical motion. excellent glass work !great video. if anything wrong please let me know.

The first piston engines were by Newcomen. James Watt later improved these to be double acting and to have a rotating output.
Stephenson invented a type of valve gear for the steam engine that was widely used in both stationary and locomotion engines right up until Steam was replaced by petrol.

What I REALLY want to see is the video showing how this was made. This takes phenomenal skill in many areas of understanding. It's really rare to see crossover excellence in many fields this plainly in 1 thing
