Nobody in the HISTORY of this sport did what this guy did at this age. This guy was 19-20 years old and absolutely DOMINATING as if he was a 28-29 year-old player at his peak. Only Pele (another freak of nature) can be compared to this. No Maradona, no Messi, no Cristiano, NOBODY did what Ronaldo did at age 19-20 (again, the only exception being Pele, who was doing it at 17).
Ronaldo would have been the greatest EVER had he not suffered those injuries.

Everytime he would get the ball there was a feeling it's gonna be goal even though he had 2-3 defenders ahead of him and he had to penetrate between them. You needed pace, balance, physique, dribbling and shooting to even get a chance. Strikers at that time were what we consider to be attacking midfielders nowadays. The pitches were also really heavy. Not good for explosive players. R9 at this point was the greatest of all time. I don't think Messi, CR7, Pele or Maradona would have done any better than him. 20+ years later and watching the foul at 2:34 still pisses me off. 100% a red card but it was a different time. This is something that he dealt with constantly because defenders couldn't stay in front of him. 100% it contributed to his injuries in his career, i wish he had never gone to the Italian league.
All you can see in the video above are not ending-career fouls. Harsh, tough, but not that "evil". Just to make a comparison, I never saw a broken leg during the 90s in Italy, but many in England in the years 2k. Maradona got a broken leg in Spain, not in Italy. BTW the injuries of Ronaldo were caused by his weak knee ligaments, not by fouls. He's got an incredible muscle structure that provided him superhuman speed, but at the same time the ligaments couldn't handle such power in changing directions and in his style of play. He had the first knee injury in Brazil, way before he played for PSV, where he developed that body structure. All - I mean, ALL - the injuries he's got in his career were knee ligaments-related. During France 98 WC he continuously took injections of painkillers to his right knee in order to cut down the pain, that it seems brought him to the infamous final against France. Look for Brazil-Netherlands 98 and tell me about harsh fouls.

Incognitus true. His step over was of supreme quality in terms of beauty,timing and effectiveness. I have seen Ronaldinho and Cristiano doing the step overs but they are nowhere like ronaldo's.

@@kkb3091 yeah I noticed that Cristiano's and Ronaldinho's stepovers never were that effective because they didn't use their hips and upper body to faint either. It's much more confusing for the defender if he uses his whole body to faint.
@@kkb3091 it's because of how explosive he is . They have no idea what way he is going and they only have a millisecond to react so they usually get nervous and he gets passed . It's crazy how much full body control he has over the ball and power at pace while being in total control

I think the Italian league destroyed R9 in the end, and had he stayed at Barca for 5 to 10 years he would of broken every record in club football but he chose not to stay in his comfort zone.. Still not many players go to Italy and get player of the year awards.. R9 was the closest player I've seen to Pele, he was amazing..
